Clinton’s Ouster Of Long Island Ducks Puts Comets Back In EHL’s Title Hunt
CLINTON, N.Y.— Clinton’s Comets have started off auspiciously in their drive to win the Eastern Hockey League title for the first time in three seasons. The Comets eliminated Long Island, last year’s division wingers, in three straight games to join Charlotte as the only teams to sweep their division semi-final series. (In the Jersey-Johnstown, and Nashville-Knoxville sets, each club lost at least one game while Charlotte beat Greensboro three straight. It looks like a good year for the Comets of Pat Kelly. When they whipped Long Island, 6-1, in the opener, it marked their first opening playoff triumph in five years. In fact, in three of their past four years, they dropped their first two contests. But this is 1967 and it could be the start of the club’s resurgence. Kelly knew the Comets…
Yvan Unique, He’s Ahead Of Last Year
MONTREAL, Que. — While most of the Montreal Canadiens are experiencing a letdown in personal goal-scoring this season, one Habitant who is streaking to a new career high is young Yvan Cournoyer, the peppery little right winger with the lightning feet. The third-year pro currently leads the Canadiens in goals scored with 23, five more than he tallied last season when he was used mostly on power plays. This year, Cournoyer has been seeing considerably more action and it is paying off for the one time junior hockey whiz. With three games remaining, the 23-year-old Cournoyer could conceivably end up with 25 goals if he can score twice more before the 70-game schedule runs out April 2. Veteran Winger Gave Fans Biggest Present
ROCHESTER. N.Y.— Dick Gamble was given a night by the fans here … and before it was all over he had given them a night, too. Gamble, only the second player (Stan Smrke was the other) in the 11-year history of the Rochester Americans to be honored with a night, couldn’t have come up with a better script had he been a Hollywood writer. As so often is the case when a player is honored with a night, Dick was having a far less than sensational evening as the Amerks and Baltimore Clippers battled 2-2 into the third period on Sunday, March 19. But all the gifts which were heaped on Gamble weren’t presented during the pre-game ceremonies. Clipper goalie Gilles Villemure got into the gift-giving act, too. He wandered too far out of his…
15-Year-Old Dwight Lewis Already A Star In Moncton
MONCTON, N.B.— Incentive, proper facilities and competition are three basic ingredients in the development of youthful hockey talent. Moncton, with nearly 65,000 residents, is the second largest city in the province, but until recently facilities and advanced competition were sorely lacking. Now with the early-season formation of a new Junior A calibre hockey team ?— the Seals, an affiliate of the California Seals of the expanded National Hockey League — and the construction of a second major arena, age-limit hockey is starting to take a step forward. Seals, with a 21-21-9 record against top Maritime junior and senior teams, plus the Quebec Provincial, Montreal Metro and the OHA Junior A, have stamped themselves as a coming Maritime junior power, and one of the coming stars is a 15-year-old defender — Dwight Lewis. Lewis, who at…
