Barons Losing Bid To Overhaul Americans
CLEVELAND, O.— As it has a habit of doing, time is beginning to run out on the Cleveland Barons. After pulling to within one point of the Rochester Amercans, prosperity ran out on Coach Fred Glover’s icers, whose five straight road games wound up in three consecutive losses. Meanwhile, Rochester, making up the two games it had in hand on the Barons, extended its second place lead in the American Hockey League’s Western Division to six points. Going into the last three weeks of the season, both teams had eight games remaining to play, five at home and three on the road. The final game of the season, which conceivably could be a big one, finds the Barons meeting the Amerks on Rochester ice. That means that, despite how well the Barons finish, they…

Portland’s Art Jones Named Top Player, Best Center in WHL
Before you say SCOTCH say “DEWAR’S” it never varies Before you say SCOTCH say “DEWAR’S” it never varies LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Little Art Jones of Portland and big Larry Cahan of Vancouver head up the Western Hockey League’s outstanding players and all-star selections for the 1966-67 season as chosen by various coaches of the circuit annually for THE HOCKEY NEWS. This is an unofficial listing. The official WHL honors are voted by the players and will be announced after the end of the regular season. However, as one voting coach observed, “I gave this ballot a lot of thought, especially because I valued as a player this type of consideration even more than the players’ vote, which sometimes is a popularity contest.” The laureled players herein thus were singled out by the toughest of…
Determination To Win From Start Difference In Hawks Says GM Ivan
CHICAGO, III In the dressing room across the narrow hall, the Black Hawks were pouring champagne into and all over one another and dragging innocent bystanders into the shower room in celebration of Chicago’s first Prince of Wales Trophy as first place finishers in the National Hockey League race. They had just cinched the crown with a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Manager Tommy Ivan, the first civilian to make the forced trip to the showers, was attempting to dry himself off and having little success. He didn’t seem too concerned, however, because it was obvious that the title, which came as the culmination of 12 long years of hard work for Tom, meant as much, if not more, to him than it did to any of his players. Much of…
