Clippers Flying High In Race As Result Of Off-Season Trade That Brought Top Vets To Club
BALTIMORE, Md.— Although the current 1966-67 American Hockey League season is not over it seems safe to assume at this writing that Terry Reardon’s present edition of the Baltimore Clippers is a big improvement over last winter’s outfit. With an 18-9-4 home record, the current Clippers have already surpassed last winter’s home log of 15-19-2. And, with fourteen games to go, the local skaters need but three more points to equal the mark set by the 1965-66 aggregation. Naturally, there are a number of reasons why this year’s team is better. But one that hits this writer in the eye has to be the big trade engineered by Reardon at the National League meetings in Montreal last summer. Nine Top Freshmen In Running For Award
SEATTLE, Wash.— The Western League is a good league, but it is an old folks’ league. It may change next season when the NHL expands westward, but until now the big leaguers have preferred to keep their prize kids near at hand in the east. Of the 20 “rookie of the year” award-winners of the past, only two, Boston’s Johnny Bucyk and New York’s Orland Kurtenbach, have played and are still playing regularly in the majors. Goal tender Don Head had a season with Boston, while goalie Bruce Gamble still gets in a game here and there for Toronto. Head, Guyle Fielder and the last three winners, Dave Kelly, George Swarbrick and Bill Orban, still labor in the western ice-yards. Western League officials have changed their rules to make more players eligible for rookie…
