Howe Enjoying Big Second Half Of Year

DETROIT, Mich—What durable 38-year-old, nearly 39, right wing playing his 21st National Hockey League season is making a strong bid for additional honors? How(e) did you guess? Yep, Gordie Howe has moved into position for an 18th straight season among the National Hockey League’s top five scorers and as a result he must be considered strongly for the second half All-Star team. Howe finished third in the first half balloting to New York’s Rod Gilbert who had 80 points and Chicago’s Kenny Wharram who had 53. Howe had 25 points. While Wharram has continued scoring well in the second half, Gilbert has slipped. Howe, who had one more scoring point in the first half than Gilbert but trailed the Ranger in goals, 13 20, has come on strong as usual in the second half. In…

DeJordy Brothers Both Strike Gold

HERSHEY, Pa.— This is the year of the DeJordys in professional ice hockey. Roger, 29, left winger for the Hershey Bears is well on his way to winning the American League scoring championship. Meanwhile, the kid brother, Denis, 28, Chicago Black Hawks goalie, is back-stopping the Windy City out fit to its first National League championship in the club’s 41 year existence in the major circuit. Hershey hasn’t won an Eastern Division title in 15 years, but the goal sniping of Roger could finally bring the crown to the Pennsylvania outfit. At the 59 game mark, Roger had blinked the light 45 times to pace the loop. Pointwise, he had 74 to deadlock veteran Willie Marshall. DeJordy is one tally shy of setting a club record in goal scoring, the mark of 46 presently held…

Surprising Aces Win Senior OHA, McComb Sets Marks To Top Scoring

OAKVILLE, Ont.— Barrie Flyers and Oakville Oaks were on the outside looking in when the playoffs opened in the OHA Senior A League. Orillia Pepsis backed into the eight and final playoff spot in the ten-team league when Oakville dropped its last game of the regular schedule in Woodstock. Every team in the league remained in playoff contention until the final weekend when Orillia defeated Barrie to eliminate the Flyers. That left Kingston Aces, Collingwood Georgians, Woodstock Athletics, Galt Hornets, Toronto Varsity Grads, Bellevue Mohawks and Guelph Regals with Orillia in the playoffs. The amazing Aces beat out favored Collingwood for first place in a great stick battle. Those eight teams face one of the most rugged schedules in league history. The league’s representative in the Allan Cup playdowns must win three best-of-seven playoffs by…
