Lowly Bisons Again Reduced To ’Spoiler’ Role

BUFFALO, N.Y— Buffalo Bisons played their 54th and 55th games before they put together their first two-game winning streak and posted their 16th and 11th victories of a dreary season. The Herd’s 10th win was a 5-4 decision over the Quebec Aces. No. 11 was a 6-3 decision over the Rochester Americans, both coming on home ice. The Pittsburgh Hornets and Rochester, in that order, clinched playoff spots in the Western Division, and as this was written, any combination of Cleveland wins and Buffalo defeats adding up to 2, would put the Barons in. Attendance, as might be expected, is off, but the hockey-starved fans of Western New York…

Francis Offers Defensemen $1,000 To Keep Goals Out

NEW YORK. N.Y.— Any suggestions that money is the root of all evil will be summarily dismissed by the dozen and a half members of the New York Rangers. The green stuff has proven to be a very effective catalyst whenever Ranger g.m. coach Emile Francis detects a depression on the way; as he did a few weeks ago. Francis’ latest inflationary move was to promise each of his defensemen a $1,000 bonus if the club finishes the season with less than 200 goals scored against them. The mark is 137 with 15 games left and is entirely within the realm of achievement. Wayne Hillman, all-star Harry Howell, Jim Neilson, Al MacNeil and Arnie Brown have been outstanding on the New York blueline. The defensive success is expected to be continued through the season’s…
