Young Players Held Up During Leafs’ Slump

TORONTO. Ont.— It was a mighty big victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs when they beat Detroit Red Wings, 5-2, Jan. 14. Leafs were third in the National Hockey League at the time and this win put them 13 points in front of the fifth-ranked Redbirds in their quest to wrap up a berth in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. By any definition, that had to be considered a comfortable margin. A little more than three weeks later, however, Leafs had blown third place and, when Detroit beat them, 5-2, on Feb. 8, they dropped to fifth, which is not good enough to qualify a team for Cup play. A 10-game losing streak, worst a Toronto team ever had experienced in one season, was responsible for the drastic change. The Detroit club, meanwhile,…

Montreal Oldtimers To Boston After 4 th Win Over Detroit

MONTREAL, Que.— Montreal’s NHL Oldtimers said farewell to Detroit’s former big league ice greats and as far as the one-time Red Wing stars were concerned, it didn’t happen soon enough. After two years of inter-city rivalry, the Detroiters went away empty-handed after losing all four games to the collection of former Montreal Canadiens’ stars. The latest was a dramatic 5-4 victory in the final 35 seconds of a Feb. 17th game with ex-NHL all-star defenseman and Hall of Fame member Ken Reardon, banging in the deciding goal at 19:25. A crowd of 12,462 went wild at the finish. The Detroit team appeared to have finally arrived at its hour of retribution against the Montrealers when they ran up a quick 4-0 first period lead on goals by Johnny Wilson, Carl Liscombe, Marty Pavelich and…

Veterans Popein, Vejprava Give Vancouver Lift

VANCOUVER, B.C.— Little Larry Popein is 36 years of age and has been a professional hockey player for 17 years now. Despite seven seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, the superlative skater has enjoyed precious little glory in his career, especially in the last seven seasons in the West with Vancouver. However, just when his time should be running out, the hardworking pivot seems to have taken a new lease on life. Popein scored 16 goals last season, more than he had scored in the two previous seasons put together. With a third of this season to go, he had 14 goals, and in one recent period he scored the game-winning goal five times, including three times in a row, and the game-winning assist once in seven Vancouver victories,…
