New Plan Suggested For IHL’s All-Star Game
DAYTON, O.— Future plans for the mid-season All-Star game were to be discussed by the International Hockey League’s board of governors on the occasion of the annual event in Muskegon. It appeared that Lefty McFadden, general manager of the Dayton Gems, would lead the fight for a change in format. It so happened that Muskegon, which won the season championship last year by a good margin to become the host of this year’s game, was running next to last this season, prompting McFadden to exclaim, “Where’s the fun or glory in beating a sixth-place club?” McFadden was planning to present an alternative whereby the team leading the race on a specified date, say Dec. 1 or 15, would become the host team for the All-Stars. At the time of the proposal, the Dayton club was…
Barons’ Needham Slugs Linesman
PROVIDENCE, R.I.— A referee has his tough nights, but he always wins. Wally Harris had one of those nights Feb. 17 as Cleveland Barons defeated Providence Reds 7-4. Harris called 18 penalties in an attempt to tame the rough house tactics of the teams. He tried to restrain Cleveland’s Bill Needham, who ’was intent on tearing Eddie Kachur of Providence apart. But Needham, attempting to retaliate after Kachur knocked him to the ice, broke free and caught linesman Chuck Scherza with a wild punch on the chin. Scherza was a former player in the AHL years ago. Harris came out the victor, however, sending Needham off with a game misconduct.…

Slipping Bears Face Rugged Road Schedule
HERSHEY, Pa.— Just when everything appeared to be going the Hershey Bears’ way the club for some unknown reason went into a tailspin midway through January. Though the Bears were still pacing the Eastern Division as of Feb. 10, coach Frank Mathers’ outfit had won only three games from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10. They lost three and tied three. And currently they’re on a seven game swing through the American League hinterlands, a rugged stretch which sees Hershey face the likes of Rochester, Pittsburgh and Quebec (twice), among other stops along the way. Defenseman Mike Mahoney, who had been turning in steady play, was lost to the club for the road trip after suffering a broken cheek bone. He was injured against Springfield and underwent surgery to correct the ailment. Earlier in the season,…
