Portland Seen Lock-up But Playoff Battle Looms Among WHL Clubs

SEATTLE, Wash.— At the mid-season point in the Western League season, in the 13th of the season’s 25 weeks, Portland seemed certain to finish first and San Diego to finish last among the seven teams. Portland was 16 games above.500 and 15 points ahead of the next best club. San Diego was 12 games below.500 and seven points behind the next club. Walton’s other opportunity was as the logical replacement for Bob Pulford, who was tied up in the worst slump of his career. However, Pulford chose the best possible time to snap out of it. Imlach had been waiting…

Cooke Glad He Built The new Forum is rising and so are the Kings. The Forum is rising not in Los Angeles, but in nearby Inglewood, adjacent to Hollywood Park, the majestic plant dedicated to the improvement of the horse-racing breed and the emptying of men’s wallets. The Forum is the first privately—financed major sports structure to be built in the U.S. since Walter O’Malley erected Dodger Stadium. Richfield-Oil, together with Sears-Roebuck, signed a 10-year contract with Jack Kent Cooke for radio-TV rights to his hockey Kings, basketball Lakers and soccer Zorros, providing the muti-millionaire Cooke with much ready riches, but how much Richfield has invested in the Forum, itself, no one is saying. Sitting in his Beverly-Hilton Hotel offices, Cooke called The Forum, “The most thrilling thing that has ever…
