Slumping Leafs’ Ace Having Problems
TORONTO, Ont.— Bob Pulford in the minors? That’s been the whisper recently in Toronto hockey circles and it’s more than just idle speculation. Maple Leaf executives have been seriously considering demotion to the minors as one of several possible solutions to the season-long slump which has plagued their big center, a 28-goal shooter just last winter. Down on the American League farm club, Leafs own a hot young center called Mike Walton and they’ve been sorely tempted to switch him and Pulford. However, Leafs can afford to be patient with a distinguished veteran like Pulford and will try several moves before subjecting him to the embarrassment of relegation to the minors. First, they gave him a new set of wingers, Brian Conacher and George Armstrong, instead of Johnny Brenneman and Eddie Shack. That arran…
Gamble Saves Day For Leafs As Injuries Flatten Vets
TORONTO, Ont.— Two excellent games and out of the lineup again. That was the story with Johnny Bower, Maple Leafs’ 42 year-old goalkeeper, late last month. Bower, hurrying to get back into playing condition because of Terry Sawchuk’s absence, returned against Boston Bruins and allowed only two goals in a doubleheader sweep over Christmas weekend. Two days later, in a routine workout, a shot by Frank Mahovlich shattered a bone in his stick hand and he was gone for at least three weeks. Coincidence? Or brittle old age? Leafs are gambling that it’s the former and still are counting on Sawchuk and Bower as their regular goalkeeping pair when the season reaches its critical stages in March and moves on into the Stanley Cup playoffs. But, in the meantime, it was reassuring to know that…
Henderson Sparkles In Bow With Bears
HERSHEY, Pa.— It’s been quite a spell since Long John Henderson tended goal in the American Hockey League, but the former National Leaguer made quite an auspicious debut for the Hershey Bears. The 33-year-old Toronto native, who once handled the nets for the Boston Bruins, was given his initial starting role Dec. 29 against the Cleveland Barons at the Ohio club’s rink. He promptly responded by backstopping the Bears to a 5-3 victory. Two days later he came off a 5-3 winner against Providence, turning in several clutch stops that eventually made the difference between victory and defeat. Henderson hooked on with the Bears in late November, checking in from San Francisco where he wasn’t seeing any service. What brought him to Hershey was the fact that regular Claude Dufour was sidelined for the season…
