Loss Of Ehman, Rupp Certain To Slow Amerks’ Title Drive

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— Rochester Americans hope the 1967 portion of the ’66 ’67 American Hockey League season doesn’t start like the 1966 part finished. In the short space of four days, the Amerks lost All-Star first team right wing Gerry Ehman and All Star second team defenseman Duane Rupp with disabling injuries. How long the two veterans will be missing from the lineup isn’t known, but if they are shelved for any length of time Rochester will be hard put to retain its AHL championship. Ehman, who has scored more points and more assists than any other player in Rochester history, suffered a chip off the radius of the right wrist here Sunday, Dec. 25, when he was hit by a stick as he and Stan Smrke broke in on a two-on-one rush against Pittsburgh. Had…

All-Star Coach Names 19-Man Squad For Game

MONTREAL, Que.— The National Hockey League All-Stars, who flexed their muscles in no uncertain terms last season, will be just as hard to handle this year judging by their glittering lineup. Coach Sid Abel of Detroit, who won the right to direct the selects in the NHL’s 20th annual game at the Montreal Forum Jan. 18, by piloting the Red Wings into the Stanley Cup final last spring, has strengthened his squad considerably for the clash against the defending Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Abel’s 19-man squad will include five of last year’s Six first-team All-Star selections and three off the second team. With four Montreal players not eligible—because they’ll be playing with the champions—Abel has augmented his team with some of the top names in the NHL. Starting in goal, the All-Stars will…

Wings Employ 29th Player; Smith Departs

DETROIT, Mich.— The Red Wings are far off the pace in most National Hockey League departments but they should be No. 1 in number of players used and transactions with farm clubs. Bob Falkenberg, 21, 6-foot, 190-pounds, is the 29th player used this season by Detroit. The young defenseman was called up from Pittsburgh when Bert Marshall suffered a collapsed lung in a game in Boston. The Marshall injury was a freakish one and the Wings seem to be specializing in them this season. In November is was Paul Henderson’s tranchiatis that eventually caused him to be sent to Arizona for a week. Marshall was injured in a collision with Pit Martin but played several more shifts before realizing he was hurt. Doctors said afterward there apparently had been a bubble on his lung and…
