Winnipeg’s Butch Goring Hopes To Crow Enough For NHL
WINNIPEG, Man.— Robert (Butch) Goring, who almost makes Jerry Murad look like that Jolly Green Giant from the land of TV commercials, is being hailed as “the greatest thing to hit this province since Duff Roblin and his Conservatives.” Leading the cheering is Denis Ball. Denis, you should be told, is Liberal. In politics … and in praise. “Butch is cut out of the same timber as Norm Ullman,” Ball enthuses. “Skate, skate, skate. Check, cheek, check. And, shoot, shoot, shoot. “And savvy. I’ve never seen another 16-year old like him.” And Ball, the chief scout in western Canada’s precincts for New York Rangers, has seen them all, including Ullman. Right now, the only black dot on Goring’s scouting report is his size. Or, to be more precise, the lack of it. It depends, though, on the scale you…

Orr Missed By Generals As Oshawa Draws Blank In Double Weekend Loss
OSHAWA, Ont.— The loss of defenseman Bobby Orr to the Boston Bruins is starting to show its effects on the play of his former club the Oshawa Generals. Orr, as he is already proving in the National Hockey League, was a two-way threat for the Generals who finished in fourth place in the junior A league last season, then went to the Memorial Cup finals against the Edmonton Oil Kings. In the last 10 days Oshawa not only found extreme difficulty putting the puck in the net of the opposition but were equally hard-pressed keeping it out of their own goal. After losing 4-2 to Kitchener Rangers, things got even worse for the Generals. They dropped a 4-0 decision on home ice to the Toronto Marlboros,) then lost 6-0 to St. Catharines Black Hawks 24…

Wings Demote Bathgate As Star Loses Touch
DETROIT, Mich.— Andy Bathgate in the minors. Seems incredible, but it has happened. The 34-year-old right winger, one of the great scoring stars of the National Hockey League for the past 14 years, was sent to the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American League last week by the Detroit Red Wings in a shake-up of the last-place Motor City team. Bathgate has been in a horrendous slump since the 1966-67 season opened and his demotion was inevitable. He wasn’t helping the Wings, who were mired in last place in the NHL. This season Bathgate picked up only three goals and four assists in 17 games, a poor performance for a man who ranks as the NHL’s ninth greatest scorer of all time with 309 goals. The possibility of the one-time New York Rangers great — he…

The Player Of The Week
The Toronto Maple Leafs are riding in unfamiliar surroundings this week in the NHL and among those they can thank for being there is little Dave Keon. Keon, the fast-skating center, triggered three goals last weekend and helped set up two others as the Leafs rode roughshod over both Detroit and Boston and catapulted into first place in the NHL. The diminutive Leaf pivot with the flying feet scored twice, including the game-winner, as Toronto dumped Boston 8-3 and responded with another big goal as Leafs beat Detroit 5-2. Keon is starting to come on and so are the rest of the Leafs. With Davey in high gear, the club could stay in first place for a long period of time. El Producto is pleased to salute Dave Keon of the Maple Leafs as…
