WESTERN……NOTES
As expected, it looks like Portland and Victoria are going to run neck-and-neck for Western honors this season. Victoria won three and tied one in an undefeated run the first two weeks of its season and scored its biggest victory over Portland ever, 5-0. Portland, however, bounced back from that one to win three straight and had only the one loss in its first six games. Portland’s great veteran Art Jones got off to his best start ever, taking the early scoring lead with 10 points, including three goals. Vancouver’s Gordon Vejprava and Portland’s Len Lunde were tied with four goals each for the early goal-scoring lead. Howie Hughes, who scored all Seattle’s goals in a 3-3 tie with Victoria, had the only hat-trick. Rookie Al Smith of Victoria, opening with two…
Gilles Tremblay Back On Firing Line Making Habs More Potent At Left Wing
MONTREAL, Que.— Left-winger Gilles Tremblay played his first game of the season on Nov. 2nd this year, and the Canadiens have been breathing a little easier ever since. The starry Gilles, who picked up a shoulder injury in a preseason exhibition against Quebec Aces, returned to the wars against Toronto Maple Leafs and turned in a creditable performance. His presence helped to shore up the left side of the Montreal attack, a spot not considered a strong one on the team, and which was further aggravated this year by injuries to both himself and Dick Duff. In a way it was fitting that Tremblay should make his season debut against Leafs, for they’ve figured prominently — though not always happily — in his NHL career. He was the man who eliminated them from…
Edwards Hot Coaler Despite No Defense
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roy Edwards and Ed Chadwick gave the Buffalo Bisons the best goaltending in the American Hockey League a year ago, and Edwards continued his brilliant play as an early-season back ailment forced Chadwick to the sidelines. Chadwick was hurt in the third game of the schedule at Quebec, and Edwards took over. He steered the undermanned herd to a pair of ties with Providence, and was the difference in victories over Hershey and Cleveland. Then the formidable Springfield Indians visited Buffalo and manhandled the Bisons, 6-1, as Edwards was given little or no support. That game bothered Fred Hunt, the Bisons’ manager-coach, more than any of the previous losses. “Edwards had no chance … no chance at all, the way our defense played,” said Hunt. “He was on his own all night,…
Punch Imlach Orders Extra Rest For Ailing 42-year-old Goalie As Vet Bower Fights Backache
TORONTO, Ont.— Johnny Bower, the Maple Leafs’ antique goaltender, celebrated his 42nd birthday on Tuesday, November 8. He was battling a mysterious backache which had put him out of Leafs’ lineup for an undetermined period and which inspired skeptics to wonder whether, at last, old age was beginning to catch up with him. Coach Punch Imlach, for one, doesn’t believe it. “It’s just that you don’t take chances with a guy Johnny’s age,” Imlach said. “He needs plenty of rest and, if something’s wrong with him, he’ll get all the time he needs to get back in shape.” Bower had been injured near the completion of Leafs’ preseason exhibition series but concealed the fact from Imlach who was trying to decide what to do with three National Hockey League goalies — Bower, Terry Sawchuk and…
