McNeill, Maloney Must Carry Vancouver

VANCOUVER, B.C.— The Vancouver Canucks’ two-man “M-Squad,” Billy McNeill and Phil Maloney hold the keys to the British Columbians success this season. Stripped of two of their leading scorers of last season. Howie Hughes and Bruce Carmichael, the Canucks will have to rely more heavily than ever on McNeill, who must play back to his MVP form of the past two seasons after planning to retire and then failing to regain the major leagues in a Toronto training camp bid, and Maloney, who at 39, after 18 years in professional hockey, may begin slowing down any time now. It’s too early for the early returns to have real significance, but it does appear that Bert Olmstead and his boys may be in for a long season. After winning the opener from the…

Hot Scoring Paul Henderson Sensation Of Early Season

DETROIT, Mich. — Happiness is Paul Henderson with a fat contract. Happiness is Sid Abel with a net chock-full of pucks put there by happy Paul Henderson. “I just feel good,” Henderson said, explaining his fast start, a start that included six goals in two nights, two at Toronto and four against the New York Rangers in Detroit. “I just feel good,” said the 23-year-old Red Wing who has found playing the wrong wing the right way to success. “I’m happy, real happy with my contract.” Henderson was one of the last Red Wing’s to sign and he was a tough bargainer. He obviously got what he wanted and then he made manager-coach Abel happy with his goal deluge. Henderson began his ascent to the higher income and higher goal bracket last season after an apprenticeship on…
