Selby Threatened With Demotion As “Sophomore Jinx” Overtakes Last Year’s Calder Cup Winner

TORONTO, Ont. — You’ve heard about the sophomore jinx, no doubt, the curse that’s supposed to strike athletes the season after they’ve been rookie sensations. But can you picture a stand-out freshman slipping so badly that he gets sent down to the minor leagues in his second year? It could happen to the Maple Leafs’ Brit Selby, who won the Calder Memorial trophy last year as the outstanding new player in the National Hockey league. Leafs were so well-stocked with left-wingers in the early days of the 1966-67 schedule that they had Brian Conacher and Red Kelly working at center. And that was even before Frank Mahovlich had signed his new contract. Selby, Wayne Carleton, Larry Jeffrey and John Brenneman were skating at left wing. Young Bobby Orr Wows Hub Funs With Exciting Debut In NHL; Rookie Undismayed By Pressure

BOSTON, Mass.— For many, many years this Hub of the Universe has labored under a label of conservatism that was almost radically opposed to anything new. Now a wisp of an 18-year-old from Parry Sound, Ont., has shattered that barrier with the suddenness and explosive power of a H-bomb. In just one week, Bobby Orr, the highly publicized $40,000 bonus rookie has taken the town by storm. Ever since he joined the junior ranks as a 14-year-old, Orr was tabbed as something special as far as Bruin brass was concerned. President Weston Adams hardly could wait until the lad hit his 18th birthday and would be eligible to play in the National Hockey League. Adams was that sure that Orr had the necessary skills to make the big jump from junior right into the…

Western Ad Lib

Boileau Recalls Youth As a hockey player Marc Claude Boileau lacked several qualities, but among them were not a big heart and a tough body. Curiously, he got a late start in professional hockey when he was charged by doctors with having a weak heart, yellow jaundice, bad tonsils and bad appendix. Presumably only sheer will-power enabled him to get out of bed and onto his feet in the morning, “in other words,” he recalled later with a wistful grin, “I was just a physical wreck.” Boileau hustled around to various doctors until he found what he wanted, some who would offer expert opinion he was healthy enough to play the rough game known as ice hockey. He then proceeded to prove them right by playing eight straight pro seasons of 60…
