TORONTO, Ont.— Who needs exhibition games, especially 15 of them in 24 days? Toronto Maple Leafs were beginning to wonder, midway through their preseason schedule, when they listed 13 regulars out of action because of various injuries. Many of them were no more serious than the usual strains and sprains associated with getting back in shape after a summer of idleness but it also seemed possible that some first-stringers wouldn’t be ready for Leafs’ 1966-67 opener Oct. 22. Allan Stanley, Wayne Carleton, Kent Douglas and Terry Sawchuk were among those affected. Frank Mahovlich also cracked a rib in exhibition play. Veteran Ron Murphy Makes Comeback Bid At Bruins’ Request

BOSTON, Mass — He has been banging around the National Hockey League for the better part of 14 years but it will take a second look for most Boston Bruins fans to recognize Robert Ronald Murphy. The 33-year-old Murphy, a veteran of NHL play with New York, Chicago and Detroit, is making a comeback after a half season in retirement with all the zest of an 18-year-old rookie, and the Bruin management is highly optimistic that he will help solve one of last year’s weaknesses at left wing. Murphy, it may be remembered, was traded to the Bruins last year by Detroit along with young defenseman Gary Doak and an amateur choice for Leo Boivin and Dean Prentice.
