Allan Stanley, Wayne Carleton, Kent Douglas and Terry Sawchuk were among those affected. Frank Mahovlich also cracked a rib in exhibition play.The question is which would be more beneficial to Leafs, an extra three weeks of preparation at their Peterborough training base or that 15-game series, which included travelling to Quebec, RoChester, Detroit, Chicago and intermediate points.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s like starting the season three weeks early, except that we aren&rsquo;t getting paid regular rates,&rdquo; one veteran player complained. &ldquo;I leave it up to you to figure out the quality of hockey that is produced under these circumstances.&rdquo;The exhibition schedule is immensely profitable to the teams, though. The receipts more than pay for training expenses. Leafs, for example, played three games in the Peterborough arena. And they had three in Maple Leaf Gardens at regular season prices, with all subscribers compelled to pay.The players, meanwhile, weren&rsquo;t on salary, sharply reducing the overhead.The time may come when NHL teams will realize that the time could be spent more usefully in up-to-date, scientific training procedures.The Oct. 22 opener also was a deadline for Punch Imlach, the Maple Leaf general manager, and assistant King Clancy, who have several top players to sign.Included were Dave Keon, Bob Pulford, Frank Mahovlich, Bobby Baun and rookie Mike Walton. All were seeking sizeable salary increases, basing their demand on the glowing financial health of their employers, particularly in view of the 23 per cent revenue increase brought about by a boost in Gardens ticket prices.Imlach and Clancy, on the other hand, were pointing to Leafs&rsquo; playoff collapse last spring.The strong likelihood was that some of the more important Leaf performers would be holdouts when the schedule opened on the 22nd and perhaps for several games thereafter.Imlach has stated he won&rsquo;t hesitate to move in some of Leafs&rsquo; outstanding young players and start from scratch, as he did when he came to Toronto in 1958, if this emergency develops. &#9632;</div>

<div class="byline">By TOM MONAHAN</div>BOSTON, Mass &mdash;He has been banging around the National Hockey League for the better part of 14 years but it will take a second look for most Boston Bruins fans to recognize Robert Ronald Murphy.<div class="container"><div class="figure-block image-float"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0007-01592/2367047-1-eng-US/f0007-012.jpg" title="f0007-01" width="149" height="249"><figcaption class="caption-body" style="width: 149px">Ron Murphy</figcaption></div>The 33-year-old Murphy, a veteran of NHL play with New York, Chicago and Detroit, is making a comeback after a half season in retirement with all the zest of an 18-year-old rookie, and the Bruin management is highly optimistic that he will help solve one of last year&rsquo;s weaknesses at left wing.Murphy, it may be remembered, was traded to the Bruins last year by Detroit along with young defenseman Gary Doak and an amateur choice for Leo Boivin and Dean Prentice. But after two games in Bruin spangles, Murphy decided to head for his home in Hamilton, Ont. without so much as a phone call to then coach Milt Schmidt.At the time no one knew what made Murphy decide to quit the game so abruptly. Murphy&rsquo;s only comment was that his decision had noting to do with the Bruins.Now Murphy reveals, &ldquo;There were a lot of reasons for quitting last year.&ldquo;The main reason was that my family was all upset.&ldquo;We have three children, ages nine, seven and three. Well, I wasn&rsquo;t able to get a place for them around Detroit until just before Christmas last year.&ldquo;You can imagine what a mess that was for my wife. Trying to get things straightened out and get settled in a new place and make all arrangements for Christmas for the kids with little help from me.&ldquo;Then for the first time in my career I got hurt. I tore the ligaments in my knee and had it in a cast for a couple of weeks.&ldquo;Finally I&rsquo;got back on my feet and things were just getting back to normal with the family when all of a sudden in February I&rsquo;m traded to Boston. We had to pull the kids out of school again and pack them all back to Hamilton. Things were so upset at home I just had to quit.&rdquo;What happened over the summer to change that decision? Did the Bruins pressure him into returning? Did they offer him so much money he couldn&rsquo;t refuse to play?&ldquo;The Bruins put no pressure on me,&rdquo; answers Murphy. &ldquo;And there was no question of money. I have by own painting and decorating business in Hamilton and I was busy all summer.&ldquo;Hap Emms simply called me a couple times to ask me if I&rsquo;d consider coming back this year. He told me the Bruins wanted me and he was sure I could help them.&ldquo;My wife and I talked it over. I knew I wanted to play and I certainly didn&rsquo;t mind playing for the Bruins. The only thing I don&rsquo;t like is being traded in the middle of the season when the family is involved.&ldquo;As long as the Bruins were interested enough to ask me to come back and thought I could help them, I figured they weren&rsquo;t going to try to trade me off. So I decided to give it another whirl.&rdquo;&ldquo;And the way things went in training camp I&rsquo;m happy to be here.&rdquo;The Bruins also are happy.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s true we are trying to build with a young team,&rdquo; says president Weston Adams. &ldquo;But you can&rsquo;t do it all at once with youngsters. They need time to get their feet wet and you need older players with experience like Ron Stewwt and Murphy to help them develop.&rdquo;ICE CHIPS &mdash; Bobby Orr the B&rsquo;s 18-year-old bonus defenseman still gets the major share of attention but a couple of other rookies have been making a big bid to crack the Bruins lineup for the opener Oct. 19 at the Garden &hellip; Ted Hodgson, a 20-year-old right wing, and Ross Lons-berry, 19-year-old right wing, are trying to make the jump from the Estevan Juniors &hellip; Hodgson has displayed ability as a tough checking wing in exhibition games &hellip; Lonsberry scored 67 goals last year &hellip; &#9632;</div>

The Detroit Red Wings announced that Tommy Ivan will coach the club during the coming season &hellip; Bobby Bauer, famed winger on Boston&rsquo;s &ldquo;Kraut Line&rdquo;, retired as a player&hellip; Observers feel that veteran Syl Apps holds the key to Toronto Maple Leafs&rsquo; hopes this season.Oct. 8th. NHL All-Stars defeated Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in the first annual All-Star game in Maple Leaf Gardens.Oct. 15th. Elmer Lach, centre on Montreal Canadiens&rsquo; renowned Punch Line, has started the season in high gear and should be a powerful factor for Habs in the coming campaign.Nov. 5th. Chicago ace Max Bentley has been traded to Toronto for five players &hellip; Charlie Conacher has been appointed coach of Chicago Black Hawks &hellip; Lester Patrick has been elected to Hockey&rsquo;s Hall of Fame.<h2>1948</h2>Jan. 14 A broken leg has ended the playing career of Toe Blake. He retires with 589 total scoring points, just five short of Bill Cowley&rsquo;s record mark of 594.Mar. 10 A gambling probe has rocked the NHL. Hainsworth has been killed in an auto crash near Gravenhurst, Ont.&hellip; A game between Chicago and Detroit at Chicago Stadium was cancelled because the ice wouldn&rsquo;t freeze in an 88 degree heat wave&hellip; N.Y. Rangers have hired a noted psychologist to convince, their players that they&rsquo;re top-notchers and should be winning games instead of losing.Dec. 23 Canadiens have called up top junior prospect Jean Beliveau for a trial. He appeared on a line with Richard and Norm Dussault and looked impressive.<h2>Adams Called Howe Better Than Richard</h2><h2>1951</h2>Jan. 20 Jack Adams says Detroit&rsquo;s Gordie Howe is as good as Morenz, better than Rocket Richard &hellip; Goalie Chuck Rayner has asked for a deeper crease area to protect netminders. He wants crease to measure 4&frac12;&rsquo;. It&rsquo;s now 3 feet&hellip; By Feb. 1 all referees and linesmen will be wearing numbers.Feb. 17 Maurice Richard Night, in Montreal, attracted a record crowd of 15,780. The Rocket received $6,000 worth of gifts&hellip; a 1951 maroon Desoto. He scored the first goal of the game against Detroit. Gordie Howe scored the winner.<h2>1952</h2>Mar. 8 Elmar Lach Night resulted in $11,000 worth of gifts for the popular Canadiens centre.May Three hockey personalities have joined the ranks of the Benedicts. I&rsquo;ll be satisfied if I wind up my career with 400 goals,&rdquo; said Howe.June Toe Blake has succeeded Dick Irvin as coach of Canadiens &hellip; Ted Kennedy has been named Most Valuable Player after 12 years in the NHL&hellip; Kennedy announced his retirement after winning the award.August Former Canadiens great, Pit Lepine, died in a convalescent home near Terrebonne, Quebec, in his 55th year. He had been ill for three years. A fine centre, he was always overshadowed by Howie Morenz during his playing career.Oct. 22 Maurice and Henri Richard, 34 and 19-year-old brothers, collided in a Canadiens training camp and took 14 stitches between them. The Rocket got 12, Henri picked up two&hellip; A 16-year-old, 180 lb. junior prospect with St. Catherine Teepees has been called &ldquo;a centre with a great future&rdquo; by scout Bob Wilson. The youngster&rsquo;s name is Bobby Hull.<h2>1956</h2>Mar. 31 An anonymous phoned a Toronto newspaper prior to the third game of the Toronto-Detroit playoff series and threatened to shoot Ted Lindsay if he played. The threat failed to bother Lindsay, who scored the overtime&rsquo; goal that gave Detroit a 5-4 win and 3-0 series lead.Oct. 6 Dick Irvin resigned as coach of Chicago Black Hawks, giving ill-health as his reason. Irvin is sixty-four.<h2>1957</h2>Jan. 12 A 160-lb, Chicago defenceman called &ldquo;a bantam bouncer&rdquo; has been labelled for future stardom. His name is Pierre Pilote.Feb. 2 Terry Sawchuk&rsquo;s resignation as goalie for Boston Bruins has been featured in 106 New England papers. He has been referred to as the highest paid goalie in history.Sept. 15 Nels Stewart, ex-great of the Montreal Maroons, died suddenly at Wasaga Beach, Ontario. He was fifty-six.Oct. 5 The Molson family have bought control of the Montreal Canadiens and the Canadian Arena Co. from Sen. Donat Raymond&hellip; Howie Meeker, former NHL star, has been fired as general mgr. of Toronto Maple Leafs for &ldquo;lack of experience,&rdquo; according to Stafford Smythe&hellip; Maurice Richard recently scored his 500th goal in a game against Chicago in Montreal.<h2>1958</h2>Feb. 1 Willie O&rsquo;Ree has become the first Negro to play in the NHL. He appeared in recent games at left wing for Boston.Nov. 15 Muzz Patrick, N.Y. gen. mgr., says he favored an officiating experiment where a referee calls plays from a seat suspended over the ice.<h2>1959</h2>Feb. 7 Ralph Backstrom, rookie with the Canadiens, looks like the best first year man in the NHL. He was rated the best Junior in the country before coming to Habs.Mar. 14 Gordie Howe shed tears on his &ldquo;Night&rdquo; in Detroit Olympia. He received more than $10,000 in gifts. A $5,200 Olds station wagon was presented to the star. His parents were seated inside the car.Nov. 28 New York Rangers replaced Phil Watson as coach with Alf Pike. Watson was fired while in hospital for an ulcer operation.<h2>1960</h2>August Ted Lindsay retired at 35, after 16 years in the NHL.October Maurice Richard, 39, announced his retirement at a hastily called press conference in Montreal&rsquo;s Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Richard had worked out with Habs at training camp, this fall. He scored four goals on his last day on the ice.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-01582/2366694-1-eng-US/f0014-012.jpg" title="f0014-01" width="335" height="253"></div><h2>1961</h2>Mar. 25 Bernard Geoffrion equalled Maurice Richard&rsquo;s record of 50 goals in a season when he connected against Toronto at 14.15 of the third period on March 16th. The Boomer&rsquo;s record-tying marker was scored against Cesare Maniago.July In addition to allowing defence star Doug Harvey to go to N.Y. as playing coach, in exchange for Lou Fontinato, Canadiens also supplied defenceman Al (Jr.) Langlois for John Hanna&hellip; Phil Watson was named coach of Boston Bruins, replacing Milt Schmidt who moved into the front office.<h2>1962</h2>Feb. 3 Glenn Hall has played his 500th consecutive NHL, game. The Hawk goalie was feted in Chicago Stadium, recently, but the party was spoiled by Montreal Canadiens who won the &ldquo;celebration&rdquo; contest 7-3.Mar. 31 Gordie Howe scored his 500th career goal against Rangers, but was disappointed because Wings lost the game on a penalty shot in the third period by Andy Bathgate.Apr. 7 Bobby Hull became the third man in history to score 50 goals in an NHL season. He beat New York&rsquo;s Gump Worsley for the marker on the last night of the season&hellip; Fred Glover, of Cleveland Barons, has become the first player in AHL history to reach a career mark of 400 goals.<h2>1963</h2>Jan. 12 Andy Bathgate, of N.Y. Rangers, has set a modern NHL record by scoring in 10 straight league games.Feb. 2 New York fans have turned on Doug Harvey who is now just another defenceman on a club unable to break out of the second division. A year ago, Harvey was the toast of Rangerville.Mar. 17 The world of Lou Fontinato came crashing down on the Canadiens defenceman this week, when he suffered a broken neck in a contest in Montreal on March 9th.July Rangers and Canadiens have staged a seven-player swap at the annual hockey meetings. Habs sent Plante, Marshall and Goyette to New York, for Worsley, Balon, Rochefort and Len Ronson.Nov. 16 Gordie Howe has replaced Maurice Richard as hockey&rsquo;s all-time goal scoring champion, by scoring the 545th goal of his fabulous career. The goal was scored Nov. 10th in Detroit against the Montreal Canadiens.<h2>1964</h2>Jan. 25 Terry Sawchuk became the NHL&rsquo;s new shutout king as Detroit defeated Montreal 2-0. on January 18th. It was the 95th shutout of Sawchuk&rsquo;s career.Feb. 29 A seven-player swap between New York and Toronto has sent Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney to the Leafs for Dick Duff, Bob Nevin, Rod Seiling, Arnie Brown and Bill Collins.Oct. 24 Ted Lindsay, 39, launched a comeback Oct. 15th against Toronto Maple Leafs. The veteran Detroit winger, who&rsquo;s been on the shelf for nearly five seasons, says he&rsquo;s giving himself a seven-game test. The game on Oct. 15th was the 1,000th of Lindsay&rsquo;s NHL career.<h2>1965</h2>July Ian &ldquo;Scotty&rdquo; Morrison, 35, has been named the NHL&rsquo;s new referee-in-chief. HOCKEY NEWS PICKS TOP 20-YEAR MEN

<div class="byline">By STAN FISCHLER</div>NEW YORK, N.Y.&mdash;It hardly seems like 20 years ago; perhaps because the day remains so vivid. It was the day the first issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS arrived at my home in Brooklyn. The afternoon was warm; warm enough for one to be able to sit in the backyard and devour the edition. But I was so interested in this, the first hockey paper, that I practically finished reading it while walking from the mail box, past the living room, the kitchen and finally into the backyard. I don&rsquo;t think I lifted my head once in the process.Without having seen that first issue for years &mdash; although I&rsquo;ve saved every single copy &mdash; I can remember one of the page one pieces. It was a story about a hockey league being formed in Havana, Cuba. &ldquo;God,&rdquo; I thought, &ldquo;what a far-fetched idea; but a good story.&rdquo; Several years later, when I joined THE HOCKEY NEWS&rsquo; staff, I wound up writing a yarn about the possibility of the Rangers training in Miami Beach,, Florida; a story that Pat Doyle of the Ranger office has rightfully never let me forget.I&rsquo;m sure it will surprise no one that THE HOCKEY NEWS, whatever its faults &mdash; and, Lord knows, they were legion &mdash; in those early years, became a reading staple in my house as, I&rsquo;m sure, it was in many other homes. The paper filled a need and still does to this day. For any number of reasons, hockey information has been conspicuous by its absence in New York papers and in most United States cities. When you got your Hockey News in the mail, you not only knew what was happening in your town, but also Boston, Detroit, Chicago and Winnipeg, to name a few. What better menu could a hockey-starved kid demand?In those fanatical years &mdash; and if you don&rsquo;t believe they were fanatical, just ask my mother and father &mdash; I harbored a fervent urge to put my hockey thoughts in print. Specifically, to put them in THE HOCKEY NEWS. That satisfying day arrived during the Summer of 1955, the Summer after I had worked for Herb Goren in the Rangers press office. The image of my first story is as clear as the picture of the first HOCKEY NEWS. It was a piece about Danny Lewicki and would he score big again for the Rangers and what would the Rangers do under new coach Phil Watson.Ah, Watson. What trouble we had together over my HOCKEY NEWS stuff. It was Phil&rsquo;s second year as coach. I criticized him for sending Ron Murphy, Camille Henry and Bronco Horvath to the minors after the Rangers had blown a lead and tied Toronto, 1-1. After the switch, the Blues lost six in a row. Watson was furious with me. He roasted me, as only he could, before the N.Y. Hockey Writers Luncheon and we feuded for an entire season. The rift finally was resolved but Watson and I have remained cool friends, at best, although I&rsquo;d hire him as coach if I was running a new NHL team.Writing for THE HOCKEY NEWS gave me my entree into the liniment-soaked world of the dressing room. It was a thoroughly exciting experience and, often, very frightening. There was a night that Rocket Richard scored a record-breaking goal on Garden ice but Rangers rallied for a win and Toe Blake nearly smashed the dressing room door off its hinges when Joe Breu of UPI and myself went around to talk with him.The stand-outs? Gordie Howe, of course. The greatest. Rocket Richard. The most explosive. Louie Fontinato, the most colorful; by far the hardest-trying guy on the Rangers. Jean Beliveau, a super-gentleman; and super-star; Wally Hergesheimer&rsquo;s humor; Camille Henry&rsquo;s class, both on AND off the ice. Gump Worsley&rsquo;s sarcasm; Sid Abel&rsquo;s perceptivity and Glenn Hall&rsquo;s goaltending. &#9632;

If Ken can achieve something equally as biblical, then THE HOCKEY NEWS will be required reading for everybody who is interested in hockey.In a sort of a sketchy way we think we know what he is going to produce, and wish him well in the venture which admittedly is one of more than average proportions. He is fortunate in having access to all the hockey records, he can call on many who are engaged in writing hockey for the newspapers, he has the blessing of the National Hockey League governors, the cooperation of a good staff&mdash;so he starts with many of the advantages that were not available to others who thought of launching a similar enterprise in past years.Possibly nobody else has thought of introducing the sponsors so we will do it as briefly as possible. Ken McKenzie is this side of 25, we should judge from a cursory glance. He is somewhere around six feet tall, and is inclined to be lean, but is no leaner, or a &ldquo;Leaning Lulu&rdquo; to borrow a phrase from Brother O&rsquo;Brien of the nearby Standard.He hails from Winnipeg where he broke into the newspaper business on the sport writing end some years ago. Like all smart westerners he had a yearning to come east. So in due course he found himself associated with good friend Dink Carroll on the Montreal Gazette where he stayed for a while handling golf and tennis.When it was decided to enlarge the scope of operations of National Hockey League publicity he became a part time operator, then was made director of publicity. He has been at it over a year and during that time has made plans to get out the hockey paper, bring the statistical department up to date, and generally create a department which will make available all types of hockey data for fans.It might be said in passing that these ideas were set in motion first by President Clarence Campbell, M.B.E., president of the N.H.L. who realizes the necessity of a publicity bureau which will keep fans posted, and will in turn be able to supply newspapers, the radio and other mediums with all essential information in regard to hockey.The other half of the partnership in hockey&rsquo;s own publication is Will Cote, a wiry, bustling little go-getter in his early thirties. The in-defatiguable Cote is in charge of the circulation and business end of the paper. He is the man behind the scenes who sees that everything is running according to Hoyle.A hockey enthusiast ever since he can remember, Will has lost count of the number of summers he has spent working on hockey statistics. He edited the Sweet Caporal Major League Hockey Guide in 1939 40 and 1940-41, before the guide was curtailed due to the war and his energetic manner will play a major factor in the tremendous success which THE HOCKEY NEWS is bound to enjoy.Such a hockey weekly as this one is a necessity. True, in the past, there has been some exceptional publicity work done independently as well as under the auspices of various clubs, but this is the first real effort to get out a publication which has the benefits of the intimate association with professional hockey and its records.This paper will be devoted to all hockey. Since the game has expanded to take in two professional leagues in the United States outside of the scope of the National League, it is evident that there will be a wider interest in all hockey matters from here on.The game is growing by leaps and bounds in a professional way. There may be more leagues organized within a few years. There are also the amateur groups overseas which have in their ranks players who started out on junior teams in Canada, who in time are bound to be found with professional teams when they return to Canada.In the past it has been hard for hockey fans to keep in touch with all professional activities. Baseball fans had the Sporting News to fall on. Ring addicts had The Ring. Both are accepted as authoritative magazines. There is every reason to believe that in time THE HOCKEY NEWS will achieve the same distinction.Some years ago Ted Reeve, well-known Toronto columnist, regretted that hockey had not yet come to the status of fistiania, football or baseball in the matter of literature. <div class="byline">By DAN MOULTON</div>CHICAGO, Ill.&mdash;Problems, some old and at least one startling new one have occupied most of the time and attention of Manager Tommy Ivan and Coach Billy Reay during the opening weeks of the Black Hawks training camp in the Stadium.One of the old worries, finding a solid third line center, has been bugging the Hawks high brass for several seasons and it&rsquo;s hoped that Freddie Stanfield, in his third try, can solve it. He&rsquo;s been performing satisfactorily during scrimmages and exhibitions and although Reay and Ivan refuse to allow their hopes to climb, the feeling is that Fred can handle it.Another of the chronic problems appears to be near solution, too. That would be Dennis Hull&rsquo;s arrival as a major leaguer. He, like Stanfield, is back at it for the third time, and again, although Ivan and Reay are trying to minimize the publicity, the thinking seems to be that Bobby&rsquo;s kid brother has at last learned to skate well enough to take advantage of his strength, shot, and willingness to stay in the heavy going.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-01609/2367175-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="678" height="679"><figcaption class="caption-body">FRED STANFIELD&hellip; Ready For Regular Spot</figcaption></div>He&rsquo;s been working at left wing for Stanfield and veteran Eric Nesterenko and the third line, which had to be revamped when Red Hay announced his retirement.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m just letting Dennis alone,&rdquo; said Reay. &ldquo;He has enough pressure on him just being Bobby&rsquo;s brother. But he&rsquo;s going to be a fine enough hockey player in his own right. I&rsquo;m very pleased with the way he&rsquo;s gone during camp.&rdquo;The problem which took Ivan and Reay by surprise &mdash; after a fashion &mdash; was the announced retirement of Goalie Glenn Hall, who has had charge of the Hawk nets since 1957.Although Glenn was 35 Oct. 3, he was being counted on to handle the bulk of the work with either Denis Dejordy or Dave Dryden taking on a slightly larger share than has been relegated to the No. 2 man in the past.But if Glenn makes his intention stick &mdash; and Ivan is working dilligently to change the veteran netminder&rsquo;s mind &mdash; the Hawks will be left with Dejordy, whose major league performances never have matched his minor league reputation, and Dryden, who, as a first-year pro, played only 11 games as Hall&rsquo;s back-up man last year.In 39&#8532; major league games, spread over three seasons, Denis has allowed a total of 105 goals and only during a 13 game stretch midway in the 1964-65 season, did Denis turn in the kind of net-minding a team must have to successfully negotiate a 70-game season.And Dryden simply is a mystery. Thus, if Hal remains adamant and Dejordy fails to play up to the challenge, the solution of the Hull and Stanfield problems could be negated by faulty netminding.The apparent arrival of Hull and Stanfield aren&rsquo;t the only bright spots that are helping to keep Ivan and Reay from devoting too much to brooding over the netminding.Stan Mikita, already rated among the great centers of the National Hockey league, is, in the words of Reay, &ldquo;having the best training camp he&rsquo;s had since I came here.&rdquo;Stan, who at times has been forced to miss All-Star games because of contract troubles, was one of the first to sign this year, and his work during training showed more flash and enthusiasm than the Hawks were accustomed to seeing from the talented vet this early in the year.Bobby Hull, of course, provided no problems at all. He reported to camp in condition and has been working dilligently with veteran linemates Chico Maki and Phil Esposito.Although Hall informed Ivan that he was considering retirement as early as last May, veteran Defenseman Elmer Vasko&rsquo;s decision to pack it in after 10 years, came as a real surprise.The huge rearguard even reported to camp. But after the third day, told Ivan that he didn&rsquo;t feel up to sticking it out.Elmer had lost his job as a regular last year to the surprising Pat Stapleton, who came up from St. Louis after 15 games and played so brilliantly that he earned second all-star team honors. &#9632;

CHICAGO, Ill.&mdash;Chicago Black Hawks&rsquo; player troubles continued to grow with Camille Henry the latest discontented hockey player.Following on the heels of announced retirements by Glenn Hall and Elmer Vasko, the 38-year-old Henry said he wanted out from the Hawks&rsquo; clutches.&ldquo;I want to be traded,&rdquo; Henry was quoted as saying when he quit the Chicago training camp and went home to his native Quebec City. He left with a back ache.The previous night, in Montreal, Watson was involved in a fight with John Ferguson.But like a bouncing ball, Watson keeps coming back for more even though at his size &mdash; 5-10 and 170 pounds &mdash; he doesn&rsquo;t figure to win many decisions.He even had a go with defenseman Gary Bergman, one of his own men, during a training camp scrimmage.Abel&rsquo;s chief problems going into camp were defense and left wing. He gave up on obtaining Toronto&rsquo;s Carl Brewer after numerous talks with Leaf boss Punch Imlach.So Abel looked at every defenseman in the Wing organization, amateur and pro, and the likeliest prospects were 20-year-old Bart Crashley, who played at Hamilton last year, Bob Falkenberg, also 20 and a member of Edmonton&rsquo;s Memorial Cup champion team, and Al Lebrun, drafted from the New York system.Bob Wall, 23, already had won a blue line spot on the basis of his play during late season callups last year and several playoff appearances.ICE CHIPS: The Wings experimented in exhibition games with putting the players&rsquo; names on the back of their sweaters, above the numbers and it was a hit with the fans.Abel experimented with the Norm Ullman line again, removing right wing Floyd Smith and putting Bruce MacGregor at right wing &mdash; Paul Henderson is the port sider. But, as usual, it just didn&rsquo;t click, Smith returned and the unit functioned smoothly again. &#9632;

Watson Lays On Muscle In Exhibition Play

Rangers led the NHL in penalties last year with 894 minutes.With the possible exception of Montreal&rsquo;s destructive Ted Harris, Orland Kurtenbach, one of the Rangers&rsquo; new acquisitions, ranks as one of the two best pugilists in the NHL. You can pick the other one from about a dozen other skaters.Kurtenbach, who once fought Vic Hadfield to a draw at the Garden, when Orland was a Bruin, will be vigorously abetted by such heavyweights as defensemen Bob Plager and Al MacNeil; forwards Hadfield and Reg Fleming with defensemen Wayne Hillman and Jim Neilson available for emergencies. Fleming was the NHL&rsquo;s &lsquo;badman&rsquo; last season with 166 minutes spent in the penalty box.There were hints of the Blues as a fighting team during the Phil Watson regime of the late Fifties when Lou Fontinato patrolled the defense. But a few bouts with Gordie Howe destroyed Louie and his confidence.GM Francis took a big step toward toughening up the Rangers when he acquired Reg Fleming from the Bruins last Winter.Then, Plager arrived from St. Paul and all hell broke loose. The possibilities, now that Kurt Kurtenbach and MacNeil have been added, are incendiary enough to inspire an additional platoon of cops to patrol the Garden on hockey nights.Offhand, it appears that Plager offers the best opportunities for fighting and color. He loves to brawl and, thank heaven, makes no bones about it. He may not be the greatest fighter in the world, but he sure thinks he is. For a chap who may be fortunate to make the club, he exudes a rare surplus of optimism. &#9632;

On October 1st, they took 42 shots to net three goals against Red Wings and win 3-1, while launching the first of their preseason exhibitions.The difference in accuracy tells the story of a five-month layoff.However, the Stanley Cup champs soon got back in scoring stride by posting wins of 7-2, 9-4 and 7-4 over minor league opposition as they continued the exhibition swing. A feature of the games was the numerous line combinations iced by Toe Blake as he sought maximum firepower. One of his moves was to insert Yvan Cournoyer at right wing on a line with Jean Beliveau and Gilles Tremblay, and the trio performed nicely. Other lines that looked good were Richard centering Balon and Rochefort, Backstrom with Ferguson and Larose, and, surprisingly, Bobby Rousseau at center between Duff and Provost.If one man could be picked as a star of the early contests, it was John Ferguson. The rugged left-winger had a great night against Detroit, scoring two goals, winning a fight and pretty well dominating the action whenever he was on the ice. Typically, Ferguson began by getting into a brawl just five minutes after the game began. He administered a quick, but decisive thumping to his erstwhile buddy, Bryan Watson. Watson waited for a chance to get even and found it in the second period, when he hooked the Canadiens winger along the boards. Unfortunately for Bryan, the referee was skating close behind and promptly banished him for two minutes. While he was off, Ferguson scored what proved to be the winning goal.Not surprisingly, there were no really &ldquo;new&rdquo; faces on Canadiens as they wound-up training camp and headed into the exhibition games. The team they iced was the one that took the Stanley Cup last May, and that included right-winger Leon Rochefort and defenceman Noel Price. Rochefort appeared to be having trouble finding the net in the first exhibition against Detroit, but connected for a pair of goals a couple of nights later as Habs swamped Houston Apollos, of the Central Pro League, by a score of 9-4. Noel Price, though skating well in early exhibitions, was subsequently assigned to Quebec Aces.Canadiens have two more pre-season dates in the Forum, before starting the season against Boston Bruins. They meet Chicago Black Hawks Saturday, Oct. 15th and line up against Phil Watson&rsquo;s Quebec Aces on Wednesday the 19th. The official season opener is slated for Saturday, Oct. 22nd. &#9632;

Line Juggling Pays Off As Habs Roll

Jim Pappin &hellip; Toronto LeafsJim Pappin has been one of hockey&rsquo;s most frustrated young men in recent yearsThe rap against Pappin has been that he plays his best hockey in the exhibition season and can&rsquo;t find the range once the NHL schedule gets underway. Hull and Mikita can be counted upon to make the club productive. Between them they should manage 75 goals. But rest of the attackers must come through. If Phil Esposito, Chico Maki and Ken Hodge can boost their scoring output, the Hawks will be hard to hold.WEAK POINTS: The loss of Glenn Hall and Bill Hay may be the blow that could crush the Hawks. Both players will be hard to replace. Elmer Vasko&rsquo;s sudden retirement will also create some problems but the defense won&rsquo;t suffer too much. However, Hall&rsquo;s departure is something else. He was the backbone of the team and will be missed. Also, the Hawks will have to find some centre ice strength, to back up Mikita and Esposito, and another good winger.NEW FACES: Denis DeJordy in goal will have to prove he can do the job Hall has performed. Dennis Hull appears ready to stick after gaining much needed polish and confidence in the minors. ExLeaf Wally Boyer may surprise the critics and prove a good pickup by the Hawks.OUTLOOK: The Hawks are always considered the NHL&rsquo;s second best team. However, without Hall, Hay and Vasko, they could slip a notch and end up third behind Montreal and Toronto. &#9632;

Chicago Black Hawks

<div class="byline">&#x2014; By STAN FISCHLER</div>STRONG POINTS: Maturity, size and a &ldquo;joie de vivre&rdquo; are the kernels of Ranger playoff hopes. If potentially quality-laden players finally mature as hoped, the Blues could move up. Defenseman Jim Neilson is Exhibit A. Superior for the early part of any season, Neilson&rsquo;s play invariably tails off &mdash; as, inevitably, do the Rangers. Vic Hadfield and Rod Gilbert are forwards who could ripen to stardom. Captain Bob Nevin and other veterans such as Harry Howell, Don Marshall, are stable enough to be assets again. The addition of heavyweights, Bob Plager, Al MacNeil and Orland Kurtenbach will infuse the club with much-needed authority and fight. Boom Boom Geoffrion may well provide the &ldquo;joie de vivre&rdquo;, which is the winning spirit the Blues so long have lacked. A 20-plus-goal season by Geoffrion also could mean a playoff berth.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-03387/2367592-1-eng-US/f0012-032.jpg" title="f0012-03" width="153" height="208"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bob Plager</figcaption></div>WEAK POINTS: Once again, the Rangers lack a superstar of the Bobby-Hull-Gordie Howe genre. Which means a genuine leader is absent; Geoffrion notwithstanding. Absence of center Jean Ratelle in the opening months of the season will hurt. Also questionable is the success of Rod Gilbert&rsquo;s second back injury. Another vulnerable spot is the forward wall, noticeably lacking a 30-goal man.NEW FACES: Bob Plager, the tempestuous one who made brief bi bombastic appearances during the last two seasons, should be a regular land mine on Garden ice this season &mdash; and hooray for that. Plager may not be the world&rsquo;s best defenseman, but he may be the fightingest, and that&rsquo;s good for the Blues. Less eruptive, Al MacNeil could help in the defensive hitting and likely will be teamed with his former Chicago buddy, Wayne Hillman. Large Orland Kurtenbach, obtained from Toronto, may be the surprise at center, given responsibility and full-time duty. Boomer Geoffrion&rsquo;s return will be watched carefully. Ex-Canadien Red Berenson is another large forward whom the Blues hope will surprise.OUTLOOK: At first glance, Rangers appear to have all the qualities of a last-place club. At fourth glance, they are a third place tear-&rsquo; better than dissension-ridden Toronto; defensively-weak Detroit ar tumbling Boston. Size up front, and general overall youthfulness of team is encouraging. I like the club for third place, knowing full wel, hey could dive into the cellar. &#9632;

New York Rangers

Promise that Teddy Green is fully recovered from illness and knee trouble that idled him for 43 games last year and the experience gained by Gilles Ma-rotte should result in improved defense. Return of Ron Murphy after quitting last February should help left wing situation. General confidence from top to bottom.WEAK POINTS &mdash; Left wing and center most questionable spots. It will be up to young Ron Schock finally to show as expected after injuries the last two years.NEW FACES &mdash; Bobby Orr, 18-year-old bonus defenseman will receive most attention. Bruins had a dozen other newcomers in camp several of whom may step in if veterans falter.OUTLOOK &mdash; Very encouraging but everything will have to jell to make a playoff spot for the first time since 1959. Hustle and spirit may overcome some shortcomings provided everyone stays healthy. The squad should be more settled then a year ago &mdash; over 40 players were used in 1965-66 season. If it can get off to a good start, Boston fans may have something to cheer about for a change. &#9632;

Boston Bruins

<div class="byline">&#x2014; By JIM PROUDFOOT</div>STRONG POINTS : Coach Punch Imlach vows this is going to be a season of reconstruction for Leafs. If he&rsquo;s serious and moves in a flock of young players, inexperience could hurt Leafs. On the other hand, the new wave will bring in some of the finest young talent any NHL organization possesses and it&rsquo;s only a matter of time until the newcomers start producing big dividends. And they&rsquo;ll be breaking in under the best possible circumstances, combining with a nucleus of standout players, (Leafs&rsquo; greatest asset), chiefly Bob Pulford, Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich, Brit Selby, Ron Ellis and, on defence, Bob Baun, Kent Douglas and Tim Horton. The youth, if there&rsquo;s enough of it, could make this Imlach&rsquo;s kind of hungry, hustling club, like the Stanley Cup teams of a few years ago.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-06160/2367654-1-eng-US/f0012-062.jpg" title="f0012-06" width="166" height="205"><figcaption class="caption-body">Mike Walton</figcaption></div>WEAK POINTS : Any time you rebuild, you&rsquo;re in danger of being damaged by greenhorns. Yet letting them play and profit by their errors is the only way they can be developed. Imlach is stuck. And on the other hand, he can&rsquo;t avoid relying on a group of elderly veterans, any or all of whom could break down on him any time. Allan Stanley, 40, Terry Sawchuk, 36, and Red Kelly, 39, are physical question marks right from the outset. Johnny Bower, 42, and Sawchuk carry the goaltending load, with Bruce Gamble behind them. Marcel Pronovost, George Armstrong, the captain, and Tim Horton are 36. Defensively, Leafs never have really recovered from Carl Brewer&rsquo;s retirement. Then there&rsquo;s the question of spirit. Imlach, when he sentenced Eddie Shack to train with a farm team before rejoining Leafs, said he was convinced there&rsquo;s a rebellious element within his team that hurts morale. He&rsquo;s right about being unpopular with his players and he correctly assesses it as a serious problem. What he can do about it is another question. And adding to the hostility was long and difficult contract negotiations with Mahovlich, Keon, Shack, Baun and even rookie centre Mike Walton, none of whom had signed shortly before the 1966 67 opener. Holdouts into the early weeks of the schedule were a prospect.NEW FACES : No telling how many. Walton as the third center Leafs have lacked in recent years seemed a cinch and so did Jim Pappin, back with Leafs after a couple of unhappy but productive minor league winters. Marlboro junior graduates Wayne Carleton and Jim McKenny were possibilities. So was Brian Conacher after a season in Rochester. Off-season pickups John Brenneman, Don Blackburn and Billy McNeill were strictly longshots.OUTLOOK : Trouble. It&rsquo;s possible to envision Leafs missing the playoffs, for Imlach could even stomach an unsuccessful season if that&rsquo;s what was required to get his team straightened out with the use of young replacements. And that may be just what&rsquo;s needed. &#9632;

Toronto Maple Leafs

Canadiens are now, and always have been, a skating club and their ability to break out en masse against the opposition is a keynote of their success. By the same token, they have the hustle to come back and break up plays in their own end should they lose possession of the puck. In short, Canadiens can and often do kill the opposition with speed. As for scoring, you only have to think of Beliveau, Rousseau, Gilles Tremblay, Richard, Back-strom, Provost and Duff to get the picture.WEAK POINTS: Penalty-killing. Habs were scored upon too much while shorthanded last season, especially against Chicago. There was an improvement towards the end of the season when Gilles Tremblay was combined with Jim Roberts, up front. What is needed, of course, is consistency. Another point of concern is left wing, where the reserve strength is somewhat thin.NEW FACES: The one most likely and only newcomer to survive training camp is Leon Rochefort. He got 35 goals for Quebec last year, joined Canadiens for the playoffs and looked sharp at right wing. Other candidate: Defenceman Noel Price. Dark horses include goalie Gary Bauman and rearguard Noel Picard.OUTLOOK: Very good. The team has every chance of repeating last year&rsquo;s triumphs, provided they don&rsquo;t get complacent. Gordie Howe goes into his 21st season and last season was fifth high scorer marking the 17th straight year among the top five. Norm Ullman proved his higher productivity was no fluke. Alex Delvecchio gets better with age and responsibility. Dean Prentice, on the Howe line, should get in the goal groove and Andy Bathgate, disappointing last year (15 goals) figures to be higher. Bruce MacGregor, Floyd Smith and Paul Henderson are in the 20-goal neighborhood and Henderson, with application, could become a 30-goal man. Also a strong point, if he remains healthy, is goalie Roger Crozier who reported in excellent condition.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-02544/2367716-1-eng-US/f0013-022.jpg" title="f0013-02" width="167" height="205"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bob Wall</figcaption></div>WEAK POINTS: The defense. The Red Wings were hard hit by the tragic loss of Doug Barkley and then 20-year man Bill Gadsby, who could have been a big help as fifth defenseman and penalty killer, decided to retire. Boss Sid Abel still was experimenting right up to the eve of the season and the blue line likely will have a young look. The only old hand is Leo Boivin. Gary Bergman and Bert Marshall enter their second year as regulars and Bob Wall is a freshman but a good looking one. The fifth man? Who knows.NEW FACES: Wall, a puck carrying, play-making defenseman who looked better with each callup last season. He was the American League&rsquo;s second highest-scoring defenseman. Also new: Peter Mahov-lich, Frank&rsquo;s younger but bigger brother&mdash;Peter, 20 on Oct. 10, is a 6-4, 204-pounder, three inches taller than Frank. Peter was very impressive in camp and Abel not only turned him pro but put him on the big club. Like Toronto&rsquo;s Frank, Peter is a left wing. There are a number of other possibles: Murray Hall (Pittsburgh center), Bart Crashley (Hamilton defenseman), Ted Taylor (Baltimore left wing) and Al Lebrun (Baltimore defenseman).OUTLOOK: Third or fourth and maybe a fight if Boston&rsquo;s young club continues its rapid improvement and scores some goals. It all depends on how the defense comes along. &#9632;

<div class="byline">By HANS TANNER</div>ROCHESTER, N.Y.&mdash;Don&rsquo;t believe that rumor that locking chairs are going to be substituted for the Rochester Americans&rsquo; players bench at the War Memorial here this season.Not that Rochester leader Joe Crozier is abandoning his &ldquo;grand old men of hockey&rdquo;, but he&rsquo;s just afraid if they get used to the comfort of rocking, they may decide to retire on their social security rather than continue winning championships.Would you believe that just about half of this season&rsquo;s Rochester squad will have passed their 32nd birthday by the time the 1966-67 schedule is history?<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-01306/2368010-1-eng-US/f0019-012.jpg" title="f0019-01" width="393" height="555"><figcaption class="caption-body">GERRY EHMAN &hellip; Coming Back</figcaption></div>While personnel changes probably won&rsquo;t be many from last season, there has been one significant change here. Local investors have purchased the champs from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a reported $400,000.But getting back to the lineup, here&rsquo;s the way it shapes up at the moment.Goal &mdash; Bobby Perreault, who&rsquo;ll be 36 in January, appears set for the No. 1 role. He shared goalkeeping duties with rookie Gary Smith last season, but was the hero of the playoffs. Gary probably will land the other spot, but veteran Al Millar and young Al Smith (with Marlboros last season) are in the running, too.Defense &mdash; Al Arbour, an All-Star all four seasons with the Americans, is back as, are second team All-Star Duane Rupp and Darryl Sly. Darryl Edestrand, who finished the season with Rochester after playing most of 1965-66 with the London entry in the Ontario Junior League, and rough Harry Shaw, who played Senior with Guelph, are battling for the fifth spot at this writing. And there&rsquo;s a chance the Amerks will get one veteran blueliner from Toronto to boot.Center &mdash; Rochester figures to open the season with the strongest trio of centers in the history of the league. Start with Mike Walton, last year&rsquo;s rookie-of-the-year who finished with 35 goals and 51 assists. Then add Bronco Horvath, 27 goals and 48 assists last season. And top with big Pete Stemkowski.Right wing &mdash; If Jim Pappin is returned by the Maple Leafs, the Amerks could go for all the AHL records this season. Already on right wing are All-Star Gerry Ehman (39 goals and 49 assists), Red Armstrong, ready for a comeback after tailing off to 14 goals last year following 32 in&rsquo;64-65, and rookie Mike Corrigan (25 goals and 36 assists in 41 games for the Toronto Marlboro Juniors). Big Bill Fleet (23 goals, 23 assists in 55 games for Tulsa) also is trying to elbow into a spot here.Left wing &mdash; How&rsquo;s Dick Gamble for a starter ? Gamble, who&rsquo;ll be 38 early in November, won the league scoring championship with 47 goals and 51 assists for 98 points, was the circuit&rsquo;s most valuable player and the All-Star left wing.Then there&rsquo;s Brian Conacher, who can play any of the forward positions and who performed so well in the playoffs last spring. &#9632;

This summer the Rhode Island Reds did just that and they didn&rsquo;t fool around! Owner Lou Pieri started at the top and made the word &ldquo;youth&rdquo; his motto.The first signs of this were seen in June when the Reds sent Willie Marshall, Jimmy Bartlett and Aldo Guidolin &mdash; all 34 years old &mdash; to Baltimore in exchange for Ed Lawson, 25, Ken Ste-phanson, 24 and Mike Corbett, 23.Pieri&rsquo;s next move was to appoint Dave Creighton &mdash; 36 year old veteran as the job a vigorous, determined spirit coupl-Roosters&rsquo; player-coach. The personable and popular center is now the AHL&rsquo;s youngest pilot.The rejuvenation continued with the appointment of 29 year old Buster Clegg as General Manager. Clegg, the youngest GM in the league brings with him to the ed with seven years of administrative experience with the Reds.Rounding out the youth movement was the appearance at training camp of thirty-five men only 5 of whom are over 30 years old.As Coach Creighton put them through their pre-season drills, a new enthusiasm and unity was evident.Creighton, who has always given 100% himself, made it clear to his charges that he expects the same of them. Double drills were scheduled as the coach put heavy stress on defense, system and body contact. &#9632;

Veterans Go As Pieri Swings To Youth; New Coach Creighton Demanding Hustle

<div class="byline">By JOHN TRAVERS</div>HERSHEY, Pa.&mdash;Even before the Hershey Bears open their 29th American League season they lost a veteran defenceman to a surgeon&rsquo;s knife.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0020-01186/2368072-1-eng-US/f0020-012.jpg" title="f0020-01" width="164" height="247"><figcaption class="caption-body">Barry Ashbee</figcaption></div>Barry Ashbee, a burly backliner, will miss at least the first six weeks of the 1966-67 campaign due to a disc ailment. He underwent corrective surgery the latter part of last month in Toronto.Ashbee, one of the club&rsquo;s steadiest performers the past four seasons, was confined to a Harrisburg, Pa. hospital last winter after suffering the injury while skating on recall for the Boston Bruins. He missed 28 games, but returned for three Calder Cup playoff matches against Springfield.His loss cut the Hershey backline corp to five skaters, Howie Yanosik, Mike Mahoney, Ralph Keller, Nick Polano and Poul Popeil, the latter who recently was returned by Boston to Her shey after a tryout. All five skated for the Bears last season.Meanwhile, Hershey had 19 men in training camp. The only four new faces were amateurs Harrison Gray, goal; forwards, Ian Maybury, Bob Eastman and Wayne Clairmont. Also working out with Hershey is veteran center Hec LaLande, former Bears and National League performer. He requested a tryout. Last year LaLande skated for Jersey Devils in the Eastern League.Gray played for New Haven last season, while Maybury and Eastman were with Montreal in the Metro circuit. Clairmont was a Nashville hand.Four players, expected to be assigned to Hershey before the season is launched, are at the Bruins&rsquo; training camp. They include goalie Claude Dufour, a first all-star pick last season; wingers Wayne Rivers, Bob Leiter and Ted Snell.Rivers reportedly is having a good camp with Boston and could be retained by the Beantown club.But the way things shape up the Bears figure to have practically the same lineup as last season with the exception of center Michel Harvey, who returned to the club after a season with San Francisco of the Western circuit.Holdovers who reported to Mathers included Mike Nykoluk, Gil Gilbert, Chuck Hamilton, Harvey, Bruce Draper, Myron Stankiewicz, Gene Ubriaco, Roger Dejordy, Gary Dornhoefer, Bruce Cline, Dan Poliziani; Mahoney, Keller, Polano, Yanoski and goalie Andre Gill. &#9632;

Bears Losers Before Season Starts With Ashbee Sidelined By Surgery

ROCHESTER, N.Y&mdash;The American Hockey League opens its 31st consecutive season of play Friday night, October 14th with two matches scheduled in Eastern Division cities.Baltimore&rsquo;s Clippers play at Providence while the Buffalo Bisons will test the Springfield Indians at the Eastern States Coliseum in lidlifters for the 324 game schedule which will conclude Sunday, April 2nd, one week earlier than a year ago.All told, nine games are scheduled for opening week-end. Every club except Cleveland will see action in at least two games. The Barons open at home against the defending Eastern Division champion Quebec Aces in their only match of the week-end.The League will again operate in two divisions, East and West with the alignment the same as&rsquo;65-66. Along with champion Quebec in the East will be Hershey, Springfield, Baltimore and Providence.Rochester Americans, seeking a record tying third consecutive Calder Cup, along with Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo comprise the Western group.Each team will meet every other club a total of nine times over the course of a 72 games card, playing four of the opposite clubs five times apiece at home and four times away and reversing the procedure with the other four clubs; i.e. four at home and five away. &#9632;

Last year, they started so poorly, they were quickly mired in the cellar. However, they rallied when general manager Jack Butterfield took over for coach Al Murray and eventually made the playoffs.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0021-0169/2368158-1-eng-US/f0021-012.jpg" title="f0021-01" width="170" height="251"><figcaption class="caption-body">Harry Pidhirny</figcaption></div>The Indians have no time to waste this season. They open their AHL slate at the Eastern States Coliseum with a weekend &ldquo;doubleheader&rdquo;. They face the Buffalo Bisons on Friday, October 14, followed by a Saturday, October 15 game with the Baltimore Clippers.New coach Harry Pidhirny had the Indians hustling and skating hard in training camp in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was the smoothest, bets run training period the Indians ever enjoyed. It was also the shortest ever, only three weeks.On paper, the Indians should make a rapid start because they have most of last season&rsquo;s players back. Maybe that was the reason for the short training grind. Few places were open on the roster.Dale Rolfe, Bill White, Jim Holdaway, Dave Amodio and Barclay Plager are holdover back-liners. All are AHL veteran defencemen.Up front the Indians will have four good lines. All men have previous professional hockey experience with the Tribe.Brian Smith centers the first line with wingers Jimmy Anderson and Brian Kilrea. This line was hot all last season and came off training camp in top condition. Anderson can skate and make plays with the best of them at age 38.Bill Sweeney leads the second line from his pivot spot. He can still fire that puck into the net and has been a consistent high scorer in the AHL. Roger Cote and 34-year old Gerry Foley skate the wings. This line should be a producer.Last season&rsquo;s most valuable player, Howie Menard, centers a third line with wings Yves Locas and Randy Miller. Several times last season, Locas broke loose with sensational scoring sprees.Menard, a little guy fresh off only one season with the St. Louis club in the Central League, was a sensation in his rookie year with the Tribe last season. He began quickly and maintained a bristling scoring pace all season.A new line was tried at training camp including Bill Smith, Al Willis and Duke Asmundson. All are bright pro hockey prospects, but with limited experience.Best youngster is Wayne Mosdell, last season in Junior A with Toronto Marlboros. He is the son of former National League star Ken Mosdell. Larry Johnston and Bill Smith impressed Tribe bigwigs at training camp. They worked hard.After an 18 year pro hockey career, Pidhirny took over as Indians coach. Twelve of those seasons were spent with the Indians; he was a member of the Baltimore Clippers the last three seasons. In 1961, Harry was player-coach of the Western League San Francisco seals.He has a sound playing background, coaching experience, temperament and ability to get the job done. Already some skeptics are wondering if a young man can run the club. Pidhirny also knows Eddie Shore&rsquo;s system well. He can get the players to perform up to par.Pidhirny also has a loaded roster. Eighteen players have returned from the squad which made the playoffs last year. That should be a good start for him anyway.INDIAN SIGNS: Besides his general manager&rsquo;s job, Jack Butterfield is also president pro temp of the American Hockey League&hellip; That&rsquo;s quite a background, front office, coach and now league president&hellip; The Tribe tries something new&hellip; They wear white pants instead of blue for home games&hellip;Anderson, coach Pidhirny and Amadio all now make their permanent homes in Springfield&hellip; All three live in different locations&hellip; Anderson resides in Agawam&hellip; Pidhirny lives in West Springfield&hellip; Amadio lives in the Six Corners area of Springfield&hellip; Bill Burnett replaced Wally Barlow as Tribe trainer&hellip; Barlow is now at American International College&hellip; &#9632;

Ont.&mdash;Jim Pappin has threatened to quit hockey, at least temporarily, if he doesn&rsquo;t make the grade in the National Hockey league this season with Toronto Maple Leafs.Autumn indications were that he wouldn&rsquo;t have to face such a decision. It seemed quite certain Pappin would open the 1966-67 schedule at Maple Leaf Gardens on right wing with centre Dave Keon and left winger Frank Mahovlich.This is only one of numerous changes coach Punch Imlach has promised to make in the team that finished third last season, but collapsed badly in the Stanley Cup playoffs.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0022-0186/2368213-1-eng-US/f0022-012.jpg" title="f0022-01" width="167" height="208"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jim Pappin</figcaption></div>Other switches: the addition of centre Mike Walton, Pappin&rsquo;s American league teammate with Rochester Americans last winter, possibly of wingers Brian Conacher and Wayne Carleton and of defencemen Jim McKenny and Doug Dunville.But Pappin&rsquo;s arrival would be big news. He&rsquo;s been a professional since 1960 and never has played a complete big-league season with Leafs. Analysts who follow Leafs often have insisted Pappin was a far better winger than some of the NHL regulars, but he was left in Rochester until he became somewhat discouraged himself.Pappin spoke out quite frankly in midseason when a Toronto newspaperman visited Rochester. He said he&rsquo;d come to the conclusion that Imlach had something personal against him. He flatly said he was dissatisfied with the treatment he was receiving in the Leaf organization.He seemed to have a strong case, at that, although his complaint hardly endeared him to Imlach.However, he hadn&rsquo;t been forgotten as completely as he seemed to feel. At the draft meetings in June, Imlach included him on the list of players he was allowed to protect from other NHL clubs. That meant Pappin was considered a probable first-stringer for 1966-67.Pappin has been looked upon with favor before and wound up in the minors. He said late last month, though, that he wouldn&rsquo;t accept demotion again. He&rsquo;d sit out at least a season, he said, and hope to be reactivated elsewhere when the NHL expands to 12 teams in 196768, and players are scarce.Pappin, after all, is a family man who has to think about money and future security. He&rsquo;s 27 now and wants to put in some years building up an investment in the NHL pension society. If he can&rsquo;t, he&rsquo;d like to get started on something else.Pappin is from Copper Cliff, Ont., and played his junior hockey here in Toronto with Marlboros. His first professional team was Sudbury, which was very close to home, and then Rochester. He played 50 games and the Stanley Cup playoffs with Leafs in 1964, producing 11 goals, but was relegated to Rochester again partway through the following season.But his output last year couldn&rsquo;t be overlooked&mdash;36 goals and 51 assists in 63 games, plus eight goals in 12 playoff matches as Amerks won the Calder Cup.Captain George Armstrong did a competent job last season but it was apparent Mahovlich and Keon needed a swift, dependable right flanker who could keep pace with them and cash in on the plays they set up and the rebounds they leave. Pappin, six feet tall and a rangy 190 pounds, is just the man for the job.Such a combination would improve Leafs&rsquo; scoring potential and perhaps take some of the pressure off a rebuilding defence which was in trouble a great deal of the time last season.Mike Walton is the other major change in Leafs&rsquo; lineup. He is the third centre Leafs have needed so desperately ever since Red Kelly had to be moved to moved to left wing. A lack of balance among three forward lines was Leafs&rsquo; undoing against Montreal last spring in the Cup semi-finals and Walton&rsquo;s arrival figures to correct that deficiency.A capsule description of Walton? CATHARINES, Ont &mdash;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0023-0167/2368251-1-eng-US/f0023-012.jpg" title="f0023-01" width="162" height="252"><figcaption class="caption-body">Derek Sanderson</figcaption></div>Last spring only eight points separated first place Peterborough Petes and the co-holders of fifth position, Hamilton Red Wings and Toronto Marlboros at the close of the 48-game Qntario Hockey Association junior A schedule.This season the same nine teams are back and there is every indication that the race will be as close, if not closer.Making predictions in junior hockey is as risky as guessing the name of Tommy Manville&rsquo;s next bride, but several of the coaches are of the opinion that if there is a team to beat, that team could be the Montreal Canadiens.The Canadiens finished in second place, just one point below Peterborough in 1965-66 and coachelect Leo Bossy has virtually a ready-made team.Bossy, who coached Halifax Junior Canadiens last season, replaced Scotty Bowman who accepted the coaching position with the new St. Louis entry in the expanded National Hockey League.Their only major loss was defenceman Serge Savard, one of the top blueliners in the circuit despite the fact that he missed a good deal of the schedule through injury.The pennant-winning Peterborough Petes face a major rebuilding job with points leader Andre Lacroix now overage but have Brian Caley returning in goal and Mickey Redmond will likely be back on the forward line after working out in the NHL Canadiens&rsquo; camp.Niagara Falls Flyers, third last season, are expected to have the usual balance which has brought them Ontario championships twice in the past four years.The Flyers will be built around the sometimes tempestuous Derek Sanderson who had 76 points a year ago and could quite possibly lead the league this year if he is able to avoid penalties.Of all the clubs in the group the Oshawa Generals, who rose from fourth place to take the Ontario title, then lost in the Memorial Cup finals to Edmonton Oil Kings last year, are the hardest hit.Bobby Orr, ranked as the best professional prospect in Canadian junior hockey, joined the Boston Bruins despite two years of junior eligibility and the age limit claimed Danny O&rsquo;Shea and Wayne Cashman.Eddie Bush, who coached Hamilton Red Wings before moving into the professional end of the Detroit organization three years ago, is back as the Wings&rsquo; pilot, taking over from Rudy Pilous who is now general manager-coach of the San Francisco Seals of the Western Hockey League.Bush, a proven junior coach, must build his team around holdovers Sandy Snow, Fred Speck and Ed Hatoum, all competent players from last year&rsquo;s club.However he could be a little weak on the bench.Toronto Marlboros, a disapointing fifth last spring, should climb to at least second or third this year with coach Gus Bodnar back for a second fling.Their four most notable absentees are goaltender Gary Smith, defenceman Jim McKenny and forwards Wayne Carleton and Barry Watson, all now professionals in the Toronto farm system.The Dukes however have Al Osborne, Mike Byers, Terry Caffery, Gerry Meehan and Frank Crosby returning and have also added promising centre Ritchie Bayes from St.&rsquo;Catharines Black Hawks.&rsquo;Of the three lower teams, Kitchener, St. Catharines and London, the St. Catharines Black Hawks, on the surface at least, seem to&rsquo; have the best chance of finishing in a higher position.London only has one defenceman returning, Jim Dorey and five forwards, none of them with impressive first-year records. One newcomer will be Brent Imlach, son of the Leafs&rsquo; manager coach, Punch Imlach. He has enrolled at Western University in London and will play with the Nationals. &#9632;

<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0024-082/2368417-1-eng-US/f0024-082.jpg" title="f0024-08" width="154" height="225"><figcaption class="caption-body">Alain Caron</figcaption></div>PORTLAND, Ore. &mdash; Professional hockey&rsquo;s most prolific goal scprer in the past four seasons is playing for the Portland Buckaroos this year.General Manager Hal Laycoe said he is pleased with the acquisition of Alain &ldquo;Boom Boom&rdquo; Caron, a right wing who was assigned to Portland for the 1966-67 season by the Chicago Black Hawks.Caron has scored 231 goals the past four seasons for an average of 57 a season, by far the highest in all of pro hockey.For Buffalo last year he scored 47 times, 24 at home and 23 on the road and had 12 gamewinning goals. He had nine two-goal games and two of them were against the Buckaroos.In the 1963-64 season he scored 77 goals for St. Louis of the Central League, an all-time hockey record.&ldquo;Caron owns one of the hardest slap shots in the game,&rdquo; said Laycoe. &ldquo;Although he isn&rsquo;t very fast, because of a knee problem, he moves well in spots and his scoring ability speaks for itself.&rdquo;Phil Watson, who coached Caron at Buffalo last year, says &ldquo;some guys have the knack of scoring goals and the Boomer is one of them. I honestly think he rates with the best of them offensively.&rdquo; &#9632;

Pro Hockey’s Top Scorer, Caron Sent to Portland

<div class="byline">by Bill Libby</div><h2>Cooke Baffles Critics</h2>As the Los Angeles Blades opened practice sessions for what is probably their last season, TV producer Tony Owen, the club&rsquo;s new president, said, &ldquo;If Jack Kent Cooke begins to build his new Forum, we&rsquo;re licked, the National Hockey League franchise is his. If not, I think we still have a chance. And I think he may have trouble financing it. I admire him greatly, but I do think he&rsquo;s trying to swing a difficult money deal.&rdquo; Two days later, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, Cooke called a press conference at the site of the planned Forum, near Hollywood Park, waved at tractors, who were busy ploughing through the fields, and announced that construction had begun and that the Forum would open on Jan. 1, 1968. &ldquo;It is a reality,&rdquo; he said proudly.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0025-0177/2368455-1-eng-US/f0025-012.jpg" title="f0025-01" width="162" height="251"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jack Cooke</figcaption></div>Cooke, without peer as a sports magnate, continues to dismay his dettractors. While setting the overall cost of the Forum at $14,000,000, he refused to reveal details of the financing other than to say he owed his biggest debt to his bankers. However, Atlantic Richfield Co. has signed a multi-million-dollar 10-year contract with Cooke to sponsor aircasts of his hockey Kings, basketball Lakers and soccer Zoros, and was very well represented at the ground-breaking and probably has a share in the building. Sears-Roebuck, another sponsor, were also represented. And the city of Inglewood may have a share with the building eventually reverting to it.<h2>Flaman Persuasive Man</h2>For a burly character who was mighty mean on the ice and perhaps the best fighter ever to play hockey, Ferny Flaman is quite a gentleman in civvies and is surrounded by one of the most gorgeous families in sports in his newly-rented home in the plush Palos Verdes suburb near Los Angeles, Ferny has his beautiful wife, Jeanne, and daughter Laurie and handsome son Ferny Jr. installed in his new diggings, with older son Terry away at Harvard. Flaman may need all the moral support he can get as he seeks to lift his new Blades team out of the Western League cellar. Friendly with Tommy Ivan, Fern has pried eight players from Chicago, twice as many as previous mentors managed. Risking the wrath of the Blades&rsquo; few loyal fans, he has traded L.A.&rsquo;s most popular player and best goal-scorer, Willie O&rsquo;Ree, to Portland for goalie Dave Kelly and a forward Tommy McVie. Actually, Lynn Patrick traded O&rsquo;Ree for McVie last season, but when McVie refused to report, the deal was cancelled and never announced. Now McVie refuses to report again and Bill Saunders may be subbed.With Keliy and Jack Norris available in goal, Flaman felt he could not give 38-year-old-Maicel Pelletier enough of a guarantee to warrant Marcel moving his family back to L.A., so Pelletier indicated he may retire unless an attractive club, preferably Victoria, decides to pick up his tab. Howie Young showed up for the opening of the Blade training session, but Ferny says the undependable veteran is strictly on trial and not being counted on. Most persons figure the Blades will fold after this season, but Flaman indicates he does not expect this to diminish team enthusiasm. &ldquo;I was leaving Providence anyway and the L.A. offer attracted me. I&rsquo;m not bothered that I have only a one-year contract. If the organization does stay in business or move up to the NHL, I&rsquo;m in a position to stay with them. If not, I&rsquo;m sure I&rsquo;ll be able to get another job. The players are mostly pros, who know there will be places for them somewhere next season, either elsewhere in the minors or moving up in the expansion. You only play one year at a time anyway. We&rsquo;ll all give it our best this season and let the future take care of itself.&rdquo;<h2>Expansion Problems</h2>Ex-coach Lynn Patrick likes Flaman, who formerly played under Lynn and thinks Ferny has done a quick, fine job assembling a club stronger than that Lynn was able to put together last season. Finally joined by I his family in St, Louis, where he is in charge of the expansion NHL Blues, Patrick is concerned by the lack of opportunity for the expansion clubs to begin building an organization. &ldquo;We can&rsquo;t sign juniors. Because we run the risk of losing them to the draft we can&rsquo;t sign juniors to pro contracts. And because the NHL clubs are hanging on to all their pros so they can have enough personnel in their system to stand the loss of 20 men each in the expansion draft we can&rsquo;t buy the pros who figure to make the expansion clubs. And because we have no players to offer, we can&rsquo;t line up top minor league affiliates. Some of the three players figured to make significant contributions to their new clubs, although perhaps the best new players any of the Pacific Coast clubs can hope to get will be those from among the last of the National Hockey League clubs.New coach Ferny Flaman of the Los Angeles Blades has managed to pry more players out of the limited working agreement his club has with the Chicago Black Hawks than any of his predecessors. The Hawks have loaned the Blades forwards Dick Meissner, Mel Pearson and John Stanfield and defensemen Wally Chevrier and Gary Kilpatrick to make it eight Hawk-owned performers in L.A. Previously re assigned were defensemen Jack Hendrickson and centre Norm Johnson, who played in L.A. last season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0025-0317/2368486-1-eng-US/f0025-032.jpg" title="f0025-03" width="157" height="250"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dick Meissner</figcaption></div>Meissner, 26, is a 5-11, 200-pounder who played with Boston and New York for 171 games in the majors and scored 27 goals for St. Louis of the Central League last season. He is a strong man and should help. Pearson, 26, play-sd for New York in the NHL and scored 18 goals at Buffalo in the American League last year. Brisson, 27, scored 22 goals for San Francisco in the WHL last season. Stanfield, 24, tallied 13 goals for Buffalo of the AHL last season.The Blades also swung a major leal, but one which is hanging fire. They swapped Willie O&rsquo;Ree to Portland for left-winger Tommy McVie and goalie Dave Kelly, but McVie has refused to report and nay be replaced by Bill Saunders. O&rsquo;Ree was the only Blade with the club all five years of its existence. McVie, 31, scored 45 goals one season and averaged 34 goals a season for six pro seasons until last year when a broken ankle held him to 13 goals in a halfseason. Saunders, 38, scored 26 goals last season.Chuck Holmes went to Seattle in exchange for defense ace Gordon Sinclair, Fred Hilts went to o&rsquo;an Diego and Len Ronson has been loaned to Buffalo, but a new forward is Alain &ldquo;Boom-Boom&rdquo; Caron, who is not a good all-around player, but a great shooter, who has averaged 57 goals a sea son in the Central and American Leagues the last four seasons, an unprecedented pro figure, and who scored 47 at Buffalo last season. Len Lunde is a new Buck, too.The Oakland Seals have acquired left-winger Pete Conacher and re-acquired center Forbes Kennedy and winger Wayne Maxner from Boston. Also Montreal assigned ex-Seal defenseman Moe Mantha back to the club. However the Seals were hurt when Hershey recalled centre Michel Harvey from them.The new San Diego Gulls received the first two of the players to be sent to them by terms of their working agreement with Detroit. They are forward Gordon Wilkie and goalie Bob Champoux. The Gulls also purchased defenseman Jim Wilcox from Springfield of the AHL to bring their total number of pro players to nine.With only nine pros in camp, Gull manager-coach Max McNab had to rely on a dozen rookies to hold practices at Chilliwack, B.C. Two of the 12, goalie Don McLeod and Jim Eagle, are given a good shot at making the team.Seattle opened camp at home in the Coliseum with 13 pros and 11 amateurs under new managercoach Bill MacFarland. Two top rookies are goalie Jim Armstrong and defenseman Bill Steinke, both of whom nearly made the Totems last season. With veteran Gordon Sinclair traded to Portland for winger Chuck Holmes, Steinke will bid for Sinclair&rsquo;s spot. &#9632;

Blades Acquire Eight Chicago-Owned Players After Trading O’Ree

Calif. &mdash;When the Chicago Black Hawks toppled the Los Angeles Blades 6-2 here Oct. 1 there were as many stars off the ice as on.Tony Owen, film producer and president of the Los Angeles hotkey club, decided to invite a fair segment of Hollywood&rsquo;s entertainment colony to the game as his guests.Included among the viewers were such famous Hollywood names as Edgar Bergen and daughter Candy, Cyd Charisse, Jill St. John, Nancy Sinatra, Andy Williams, Debbie Reynolds, Dave Janssen, Susan Oliver, Paul Burke, Janet Leigh, Glenn Ford, Dean Martin, Grou-cho Marx, Steve Allen, Richard Conte, Edie Adams, Randy Scott, Ryan O&rsquo;Neal, Shelley Fabres, Paul Peterson, Carl Betz, Doug McClure, Adam West and George Montgomery, among others.The Hollywood celebrities came to see the Black Hawks and their great scoring star,&rsquo;Golden Boy&rsquo; Bobby Hull perform and they weren&rsquo;t disappointed by Hull. Hollywood Stars See Hull Score In L.A. Contest

<div class="byline">By MATT DENNIS</div>DETROIT, Mich.&mdash;As the fourth season opened for the Central Professional Hockey League, Jack Adams, president of the circuit said, &ldquo;This could be our greatest yet both from a competition and an attendance standpoint.When the 70-game schedule was completed last spring, St. Louis had fourth place and a playoff berth but fifth-place Houston was only four points behind them and Memphis seven. Houston and Memphis were not that far out of the running. The competition should be just as close this season.&ldquo;Oklahoma City was a brand new franchise last season and attracted 173,096 customers. St. Louis and Tulsa followed them both over the 100,000 mark. I look to increases in attendance in Houston and Memphis and Omaha seems happy to be back in our league after a year&rsquo;s absence. In both seasons, 1964-65 and 1963-64, they recorded more than 100,000 fans. But in at least one respect it is unanimously agreed that the son of former NHL great Emile (Butch) Bouchard does differ from his famous dad.</div><div style="clear: both;"></div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0029-0323/2368727-1-eng-US/f0029-032.jpg" title="f0029-03" width="161" height="246"><figcaption class="caption-body">Butch Bouchard</figcaption></div>&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a better skater than Butch ever was,&rdquo; flatly states Habs&rsquo; scout Floyd Curry. And these sentiments are echoed both by Junior Canadiens&rsquo; general manager Phil Wimmer and coach Leo Bossy.Add this recommendation to the fact that Pierre has his father&rsquo;s size (6&rsquo;2&rdquo;, 190 pounds) and to Bossy&rsquo;s declaration that &ldquo;this kid will make it &mdash; not on his father&rsquo;s name but on his own ability,&rdquo; and you come up with the OHA Junior circuit&rsquo;s potential rookie-of-the year for the 1966-67 campaign.The elder Bouchard, one-time Canadiens&rsquo; captain in the forties and early fifties, is understandably reluctant to discuss his son&rsquo;s potential. &ldquo;After all, I don&rsquo;t want to boost my own product,&rdquo; he says, candidly.&ldquo;A father is a poor judge of his own son,&rdquo; Butch continues. &ldquo;No, I never taught him much. Sometimes I talk to him, but it&rsquo;s hard for a father to teach his own son. On the ice he&rsquo;ll improve with coaching.&rdquo;There are those who are of the opinion that Pierre doesn&rsquo;t need all that much more improvement in order td be rated a big-league prospect.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a good skater,&rdquo; Bossy points out. &ldquo;He has the desire and the proper attitude. True, he has a lot to learn defensively, but by Christmas I expect him to be on a par with any defenseman in the OHA.&rdquo;Wimmer, meanwhile, is quick to point out that at 18 years of age Pierre has two full seasons of junior hockey under him. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no doubt he&rsquo;s going to be a terrific athlete,&rdquo; prophe-sizes the Baby Habs&rsquo; GM.&ldquo;Pierre shows a lot of heart out there,&rdquo; added Curry. And this is no idle boast. On successive days during training camp Bouchard suffered a groin injury in practice and sustained a bruised thigh in an exhibition game against Houston Apollos. But despite these handicaps he hung in there daily, plugging away in a determined bid to nail down one of the starting blueline berths on the roster.Pierre is among the growing legion of young hockey players who attempt to combine the sport with their studies. He attends a French private school in Montreal. According to his father he is &ldquo;very conscious of finishing his schooling and doesn&rsquo;t find it too much of a strain to do both.&rdquo;When Pierre was in his early teens he played all his hockey outdoors, because his native Longueuil, Que. (a Montreal suburb) had no artificial ice. As a 15-year old he attended College Laval, on whose hockey team he played for two years. Last season he was an all-star rearguard in the Montreal Metropolitan Junior&rsquo;A&rsquo; loop.With NHL expansion broadening opportunities for hockey players in general and for good, young defensemen in particular, it could be just a matter of time before Pierre Bouchard is seen following in his dad&rsquo;s footsteps.They may be big to fill (Butch played 15 years in the NHL, performed in 898 games, scored 225 points, was an allstar four times and helped Canadiens win four Stanley Cups) but hockey men feel he truly has the potential to emulate his famous father. &#9632;
