Pappin Won’t Quit — Not With Leafs’ Berth Beckoning

TORONTO. Ont.— Jim Pappin has threatened to quit hockey, at least temporarily, if he doesn’t make the grade in the National Hockey league this season with Toronto Maple Leafs. Autumn indications were that he wouldn’t have to face such a decision. It seemed quite certain Pappin would open the 1966-67 schedule at Maple Leaf Gardens on right wing with centre Dave Keon and left winger Frank Mahovlich. This is only one of numerous changes coach Punch Imlach has promised to make in the team that finished third last season, but collapsed badly in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Other switches: the addition of centre Mike Walton, Pappin’s American league teammate with Rochester Americans last winter, possibly of wingers Brian Conacher and Wayne Carleton and of defencemen Jim McKenny and Doug Dunville.
