Players Hand McNeill Most All-Star Votes In Picking WHL Teams

SEATTLE, Wash. Three teams divided the six positions on the first official Western League All-Star Team as selected by the players of the circuit. Pennant-winning Portland placed right-winger Cliff Schmautz and defenseman Connie Madigan. Runnerup Victoria placed left-winger Bob Barlow and defenseman Fred Hucul. Third-place Vancouver placed centre Billy McNeill and goalie Gilles Villemure. The second team included Portland goalie Don Head, Victoria’s defenseman Alex. (Sandy) Hucul and Vancouver’s defenseman Larry Cahan, as well as Seattle left-winger Bill Mac-Farland and center Guyle Fielder and San Francisco right-wing Wayne Connelly. Only last-place L.A. drew a blank on the two honor teams. Had a third-team been named, L.A. still would be blank. Sherbrooke Stops Miners After Opening Loss

CALGARY, Alta.— Sherbrooke Beavers, with designs on another Allan Cup victory, found their skating legs in the second game of the finals after being jolted 6-3 in the opener by the Drumheller Miners. The Beavers came through with a 4-1 victory over the Western Canada senior titleholders with Sherbrooke coach Georges Roy, demanding a change in referees, holding the threat of pulling his team out of the series if his request wasn’t met by the CAHA. The best-of-seven final, which is being played in its entirety here, was deadlocked at 1-1 and the Beavers showed clearly in the second game that they would now have to be reckoned with as the ‘team to beat’ for the cup. ‘Big M’ Making No. 27 Respected Around NHL Hockey News Editor: I hope you will print this letter and I sincerely hope it will help put an end to the campaign to get Frank Maholich to wear No. 9. Hurriedly I must add that the Big M is my favorite player and I’m behind him all the way in whatever he does. I realize the wonderful company he’d be in, if he wor No. 9 on his sweater. It’s the big number in the NHL. But he’d be just another super star wearing that number. Right now when you think of or see the number 27, you automatically think of Frank Mahovlich. He’s made No. 27 famous in the same way that Rocket Richard, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, etc., have made No. 9…
