Schmelzer Brothers Plan Rink For IHL Franchise At Columbus

Columbus, Ohio The Schmelzer brothers of Cleveland — Ray, Larry and Jerry — and Ben Cowall of Columbus, have acquired the franchise for a team in the International Hockey League. The team will commence play in the Ohio State Fairgrounds Coliseum next October in time for the 1966-67 IHL season. The franchise was officially ratified at a recent meeting of the IHL Board of Governors. Announcement of the new team was first made by Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes at a press conference he called for civic, business and sports leaders in Columbus. The Governor pointed out the many benefits — civic and business—that the initiation of a hockey team would bring to Columbus and central Ohio. The majority of hockey fans probably view the Stanley Cup playoffs as the most exciting part of the NHL season. This is the time of year when feats make headlines, coaches pull off strategy and fans harken back to playoffs of other years. Stratton Named CPHL’s Most Valuable Player

DETROIT, Mich. Art Stratton, centerman of the St. Louis Braves, has been named the most valuable player in the Central Professional Hockey League for the 1965-66 season. Stratton, a 30-y ear-old forward, 6’1” and weighing 180 pounds, won the CPHL scoring championship firing 28 goals and drawing 66 assists for 94 points playing 66 games. In the 1964-65 campaign as a member of the Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League, Stratton won the scoring title and this season’s performance gave him his second successive crown. Stratton has had brief experience in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks. Coaches of the six clubs in the CPHL took part in the voting.…
