Injured Barkley Acclaimed By Detroit Fans
“You like 7up 7up likes you” “You like 7up 7up likes you” DETROIT, Mich. Doug Barkley was gone but he sure wasn’t forgotten. Barkley was given a roaring ovation from the 14,103 fans who turned out for the Red Wings’ final regular season home game, traditionally Trophy Night. Barkley missed the Wings’ final 27 games of the season because of his eye injury but he still was acclaimed Detroit’s best defenseman by the Detroit Hockey Writers Association. The 29-year-old rearguard, nearly 20 pounds under his playing weight, returned to Detroit after nearly two months of hospitalization and treatment in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in time for the season windup. However, doctors still aren’t sure how well the big defenseman will recover. He returns to the hospital in May for another examination and can do no…

Abel’s Plan To Hit Hawks Paying Off
DETROIT, Mich.— Detroit Red Wings, anguished by a miserable one victory in 14 games against the Black Hawks this season, were attempting to flex new muscles to bring the Chicagoans down to their size. Manager-coach Sid Abel figured if the Wings could concentrate on heavy checking, he could at least slow the Hawks down and the Red Wings would have a chance in their best-of-seven semi-final playoff. The plan was a gamble by Abel but it paid a quick dividend when the Detroiters humbled the Hawks 7-0 in the second game of the series. Abel employed some closechecking tactics against the Hawks’ big line of Stan Mikita, Ken Wharram and Doug Mohns and all three drew a blank. Mikita was so inept, Hawk coach Billy Reay benched him. The Wings roared away from…

Wings Figure Law On Averages On Their Side After Beating Hawks Just Once In 14 Starts
DETROIT. Mich. — Behind the eight ball again are the Detroit Red Wings … facing the Chicago Black Hawks in the Stanley Cup semi-finals. It almost seems that the Wings and Hawks have been going together longer than peanut butter and jelly. This is the fourth straight semi-final meeting of the two and Detroit held a 2-1 lead going into this year’s classic. But the Wings’ results against Chicago during regular season play were anything but classic. They were more tragic. Just one solitary victory and two ties, one of those achieved with two seconds to play, to show for 14 games. Manager-coach Sid Abel and the rest of the Wings preferred to look at it another way — it’s law of averages times. To help it along, Abel switched hotels for the part…
