Popiel, born in Denmark, settled in Georgetown, Ont., as an 8 year - old when his parents moved to Canada, and played his junior hockey with the St. Catharines Teepees in the Junior “A” OHA. He broke into pro hockey with the St. Louis Braves in the Central Pro League, and was with Buffalo last winter, when he told a sportswriter his last name was spelled “Popiel” and not “Popeil,” as had been done since the start of his career. Home Ice Provides Decisive Edge For IHL Clubs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. Home ice was good to International Hockey League clubs during the season that was about to close. Out of a total of 202 games played the home ice clubs won 135, lost 57 and tied ten. Allowing a half game won for a tie, this figured out to 69 percent. However, the winning percentage is somewhat deceiving, since it was to a great extent built up by one club, the Muskegon Mohawks. The Mohawks had nearly a clean record at home, losing only one and tieing two out of 33 played, with two more still on the schedule. Had Muskegon been held to anywhere near a normal winning record at home, the visiting clubs would have had a much better percentage. Going further into the statistics, the IHL piled up a…

College Star Joins Bruins

BOSTON. Mass. — Boston College senior Jackie Cuniff continues to work out with the Bruins daily but there is little chance that the former college all-American will be used in one of the remaining games this season … Cuniff still has a broken pin in his shoulder resulting from a shoulder separation playing with the Eagles early this season and the Bruins don’t want to risk the chance of reinjuring the shoulder this year.
