Looking At The NHL Race

HOCKEY NEWS this week asked members of the Quebec Aces of the American Hockey League this question:Now that you have completed your four-game tour of the Western Hockey League, and have met three WHL teams in Quebec, what are your feelings about the inter-locking schedule?Frank Carlin, general manager: I believe the figures will show that the inter-locking games helped the Western teams at the gate, but didn&rsquo;t mean a great deal to us. We drew almost 9.000 at Los Angeles, and a sellout at Vancouver. At home, we beat Los Angeles, 10-1, and maybe that hurt us, since it was the first Western team in.Boom Boom Geoffrion, coach: It was hot when we were on the coast, and the boys had trouble getting into the proper frame of mind. I don&rsquo;t think the interlocking games provide as good hockey as the games we play in our own league.Cleland (Keke) Mortson: I&rsquo;m afraid we underrated some of the Western teams. We won 2 and lost 2. But it&rsquo;s hard to get &ldquo;up&rdquo; for a game out there. You get the feeling they are exhibition games, somehow. I&rsquo;m sure the players enjoyed the trip and the chance to see the West Coast. We were well-treated out there.Wayne Hicks: As far as attendance is concerned. I think the inter-locking games benefit the Western League more than ours. The travel didn&rsquo;t bother us. We enjoyed it out there, although it seemed odd playing hockey when it was around 80 degrees in Los Angeles.Noel Price: I think the interlocking games have made it clear that the AHL is a superior league. However, the games might build more interest here, or at least as much as in the West, if the inter-locking games are continued.Bill Sutherland: I think that the inter-locking games help build interest in both leagues, and the idea is a good one for hockey. It gives the players a chance to compare their leagues, and makes it that much more interesting for all concerned. I definitely feel it is a good idea. &#9632;

Howe, with 620 lifetime goals and shooting for his best goal production season in three years, has 25 goals this season.</figcaption></div>TORONTO, Ont &mdash;It was a big week around the National Hockey League for milestone goals and the biggest one of all &mdash; Bobby Hull&rsquo;s 51st &mdash; is still to come.Jean Beliveau of Montreal shot his 378th and 379th goals of his NHL career to tie retired Ted Lindsay for third place in the all-time scoring race.Frank Mahovlich became the first Toronto player to score 250 goals as a Leaf when he counter last weekend against Boston. He also had the distinction of turning the trick in only his ninth season, quicker than anyone else except Hull, who made it in eight.Johnny Bucyk of Boston also joined the select 200-goal club in the same game as Mahovlich clicked for his milestone goal.But all of hockey is waiting for Hull&rsquo;s 51st goal and it could come this week in Chicago where the Hawks are slated for two home games and one road encounter. Hull has 49. &#9632;

NHL Stars Get Milestone Goals—Hull Nets 49th

MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;The National Hockey League championship race is rapidly developing into a two-team battle &mdash; Montreal and Chicago.In fact there is a good possibility the Habs and Hawks will stage a showdown in the final weeks of the NHL schedule to decide which team ends up on top and takes home the league title. Odds favor the Montrealers if for no other reason because the Hawks have never been able to finish in first place once since the team came into the NHL back in 1933-34. An incredible record but one the Hawks have come to live with over the years.The Canadiens have 16 games to play, the Hawks 14. Third-place Detroit, losers of five of their last six starts, appear to have fallen by the wayside in the title race for the moment.The Wings, who are eight points in arrears of the two front - running NHL clubs, haven&rsquo;t had too much success with the Hawks and Habs this season, a good reason why they are being discounted for the championship. Their record with Montreal is 5-4-3 and with Chicago it&rsquo;s 9-1-1 with the Wings on the short end in both counts.In the stretch run, the Canadiens and Hawks meet each other three times, twice in Chicago, which could settle the race if one club was to pull a sweep. The Montrealers have two games in hand on the Hawks at the present time. &#9632;

50-Goal Comparison Chart

<div class="byline">BY DAN MOULTON</div>CHICAGO, Ill. &mdash;When Bobby Hull finally breaks the 50 - goal record, the National Hockey League should include anendurance award among any honors it might see fit to bestow on the Black Hawks&rsquo; Golden Jet.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01542/2335738-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="281" height="436"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ed Westfall</figcaption></div>At least, that&rsquo;s the opinion of Hawk Coach Billy Reay, who contends that Bobby has maintained his remarkable scoring pace despite being subjected to the closest &mdash; and, Reay insists, the most illegal &mdash; checking ever employed.It&rsquo;s a shame that the most colorful player in the league has to put up with all this hooking and holding,&rdquo; Reay stormed recently after Boston&rsquo;s Ed Westfall had spent a night almost perched on Bobby&rsquo;s shoulder.&ldquo;The league officials don&rsquo;t call 20 percent of the fouls committed against him. One of the problems is that he&rsquo;s so strong that he doesn&rsquo;t fall when he&rsquo;s hooked but that doesn&rsquo;t mean the penalty shouldn&rsquo;t be called.&ldquo;He might be better off if he did fall down more often. But the idea doesn&rsquo;t appeal to him, and I suppose he&rsquo;s right.&rdquo;Each team has a man assigned to shadow Hull. The Canadiens use Claude Provost; Paul Henderson handles the job for Detroit, Bob Nevin for the Rangers, and, of course, with the Bruins it&rsquo;s Westfall.Hull seldom complains about the work turned in by Provost, Henderson, or Nevin but he doesn&rsquo;t even try to mask his feelings about Westfall, who is the most persistent of all.&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know what he&rsquo;s trying to prove,&rdquo; said Bobby. &ldquo;Why can&rsquo;t the guy just play the game &hellip; check, handle the puck, try to make plays? When he&rsquo;s on the ice with me, he wouldn&rsquo;t move after the puck unless he had an edge of at least half the ice.&ldquo;If all the guys in the league played this way, we&rsquo;d be working in front of about 15 people every night. And most of them would be beer vendors.&ldquo;This is the way it&rsquo;s been for a couple of years now, and I guess this is the way it&rsquo;s going to be. Goal-scoring is going to be an inch-by-inch thing.&rdquo;Reay doesn&rsquo;t agree with Bobby that this is the way it has to be. He feels that officials are giving Bobby&rsquo;s checkers latitude because they realize he&rsquo;d be virtually unstoppable if checked legally.&ldquo;All I ask is that he be treated like any other hockey player. An illegal check is an illegal check, no matter who the victim is. As it is now, officials call penalties against the guys checking Hull only when they really have no choice, only when somebody finally succeeds in pulling Bobby&rsquo;s legs from under him.&rdquo;Reay is certain that neither Rocket Richard, nor Boom Boom Geoffrion was subjected to the treatment Bobby has been getting.&ldquo;Rocket was watched pretty closely from the blue line in but he wasn&rsquo;t hounded all over the ice, and besides, there just wasn&rsquo;t as much hooking going on then as there is now.&ldquo;And I know that Geoffrion never was watched as closely as Bobby is &mdash; never.&ldquo;Actually, there is entirely too much hooking going on all over the league. It&rsquo;s just a method some guys are employing who don&rsquo;t have enough ability to stick in the league any other way.&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been complaining about it for some time and last year Carl Voss (then referee-in-chief) agreed that it should be stopped but nothing apparently, has been done about it.&ldquo;The stick is not supposed to be used as a means of checking, except to sweep the puck away from a man.&ldquo;Too many guys now bring that stick up across the player&rsquo;s body and pin him in. Not even the greatest hockey player in the world can overcome a thing like that too often.&rdquo;Some of Reay&rsquo;s anger was modified by the return to action, recently of Captain and All-Star defenseman Pierre Pilote, after sitting out 18 games with a broken right thumb.His first appearance was impressive although he admitted that he was awfully tired and a little nervous most of the way.&ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t worried when I had the puck but I really was scared that I&rsquo;d make a mistake of defense and cost us a goal,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;The thumb hurts like hell, too, but I guess you have to expect that.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-03456/2335731-1-eng-US/f0002-032.jpg" title="f0002-03" width="541" height="1219"><figcaption class="caption-body">BOBBY HULL &hellip; Enduring Plenty</figcaption></div> &#9632;

Bobby Hull Subject Of Extra Checking By NHL Teams

For years he carried the &ldquo;underrated&rdquo; tag. It can&rsquo;t be applied any more, not with 42 goals last season and first All-Star team honors.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-02434/2335807-1-eng-US/f0003-022.jpg" title="f0003-02" width="277" height="438"><figcaption class="caption-body">Alex Delvecchio</figcaption></div>Doug Barkley finally got the treatment toward the close of the first half of the season although there still were enough doubters so that he drew just the third most All-Star defense votes instead of first, like manager-coach Sid Abel and a number of others thought he deserved.Unfortunately, Barkley&rsquo;s right eye was torn by Doug Mohns&rsquo; stick oil Jan. 30 and he won&rsquo;t be back this season.Now Alex Delvecchio, third highest scoring center in NHL annals, finally is getting the big publicity treatment around the National Hockey League.Just prior to the All-Star voting in January, Abel was asked how he rated the various players, what players of his own he thought should be considered.Naturally he named Ullman, Howe, Barkley and goalie Roger Crozier.He went over the centers in the league that he liked in the first half. Ullman, Jean Beliveau, Bob Pulford, Stan Mikita.&ldquo;And you can&rsquo;t forget Delvecchio,&rdquo; Abel said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s been right up in the top ten of the scoring.&rdquo;But there&rsquo;s such an abundance of fine pivots in the NHL that Delvecchio, sixth leading scorer at mid-year, was forgotten, or, if not forgotten, just plain rejected because he received only three points.That&rsquo;s been the story of the 34-year-old Delvecchio&rsquo;s career but that career bears a closer look.Delvecchio is not an especially flashy player. Actually, he&rsquo;s more fluid than flashy. He gets to the right spot at the right time.&ldquo;Alex gets in there and digs, works&rsquo; along the boards.&rdquo; says Johnny Mitchell, assistant to Abel, &ldquo;but he knows how to roll with a check so no one ever really gets a full piece of him.&rdquo;Toronto&rsquo;s Bob Baun. one of the heaviest hitters in the game, corroborated Mitchell, telling Red Burnett of the Toronto Star that Delvecchio accepts a check to set up a play and then rolls away from the check.Delvecchio isn&rsquo;t a bodychecker himself but he forechecks and forces opponents into errors. With a guy like Howe on right wing, those mistakes are costly and more often than not, result in Red Wing goals.&ldquo;When a team makes mistakes against us in their own end. we&rsquo;ve got the guys who can put the puck in the net,&rdquo; Abel says.Delvecchio is one of them, second only to Howe as a matter of fact on the Wings and, in mid-February, tied with Andy Bathgate as the eighth leading goal producer in NHL history.Delvecchio had 302 goals at that point and the only men ahead of him are Howe (617 at mid-month), Maurice Richard (544), Ted Lindsay (379), Jean Beliveau (375 at midmonth), Bernie Geoffrion (371), Nels Stewart (324) and Bobby Hull (308 at mid-month).But Delvecchio never has made a first All-Star team, has only a pair of second team selections and one Lady Byng Trophy behind him.Perhaps one of the reasons for Delvecchio&rsquo;s failure to win fame (he&rsquo;s got a little jeering section in the Olympia balcony) and influence voters started back in the Jack Adams era.Like many hockey men, Adams thought Delvecchio had the talent to be a superstar and it grated the old taskmaster to see Delvecchio taking it easy. Jack remarked on it often and perhaps a seed was planted in the voters&rsquo; heads that Delvecchio was a good center but not a great one, that he didn&rsquo;t work hard enough.Delvecchio got his nickname of &ldquo;Fats&rdquo; or &ldquo;Fatty&rdquo; because of his big, round cheeks &hellip; and the fact that he sometimes goes heavy on the spaghetti.&ldquo;Jack used to look at me and I think all he saw was &lsquo;bike&rsquo;,&rdquo; Delvecchio said recently, laughing. &ldquo;I think he wanted to make a bicycle racer out of me.&rdquo;The &ldquo;cure&rdquo; was the stationary bike, set in a very small, unventilated room. A few miles on that and the sweat and pounds poured off.Adams tried to goad Delvecchio into going harder but Alex is too easy going for that. He continued to score at a pace most players would welcome, 19.2 goals per season for 11 campaigns.Then, when Abel took over as general manager as well as coach, he tried a different approach. He promoted Howe and Bill Gadsby to the rank of assistant coach and named Delvecchio captain.It probably would make a great story if we said that Delvecchio rattled off three straight 30 goal seasons.Not true though. Delvecchio still is Delvecchio. still cruises along, seemingly effortlessly &hellip; and scores his 20 goals. The last three seasons he scored 20, 23 and 25 goals and he had 23 in February this season to run his string of 20-goal seasons to six and eight overall in 15 seasonsHe still complains, kiddingly, when Abel works the club a little extra hard when they&rsquo;ve gone a few weeks without a stiff practice or if they haven&rsquo;t been playing too well.But he wants to be a winner. In one practice game, Abel usually puts up a few dollars for the winning team to make the workout interesting, the &ldquo;enemy&rdquo; had Crozier in goal and the &ldquo;enemy&rdquo; had a lead something like 8-2.Abel had some paper work to do so Delvecchio was running the practice. Suddenly Crozier looked like a piece of Swiss cheese and Delvecchio&rsquo;s team pumped goals past him like they owned the little netminder.When Crozier was kidded about it afterward he said: &ldquo;I had to let &lsquo;em in. If I hadn&rsquo;t, we would have been out there all day. Delvecchio Climbs Out Of Shadows To Grab Share Of NHL Spotlight

DETROIT, Mich.Alex Delvecchio celebrated his 1,000the regular season National Hockey League game with his 23rd goal of the campaign, on a shot that&rsquo;s becoming a specialty &mdash; a slap shot from the left point.The 1,000 games put Delvecchio in top company again, as do his 300-plus goals. The only other men in NHL history to play 1,000 games in the big time are Gordie Howe, Red Kelly, Bill Gadsby, Ted Lindsay, Allen Stanley, Doug Harvey and Marcel Pronovost. &#9632;

Alex Reaches 1,000th Mark

Norris, 59-year-old multi-millionaire co-owner of the Chicago Black Hawks, died Feb. 25 of a heart condition and final services were held here Sat., Feb. 27, with the list of mourners reading like a hockey&rsquo;s who&rsquo;s who. He was buried in the family plot in New York.All of Jim Norris&rsquo; NHL owner confreres were here along with NHL President Clarence Campbell and Arthur Wirtz, the man who shared the operation of the lucrative Chicago franchise with Mr. Norris in the NHL.Mr. Norris passed on suddenly just a little more than two weeks after attending the NHL expansion meetings and the Jack Adams testimonial dinner in New York city Feb. 7-8-9.Hospital authorities said he was admitted for a treatment of a coronary heart disease complicated by repeated disturbances of heart rhythm which eventually claimed his life after he had originally been reported in &lsquo;satisfactory&rsquo; condition.Mr. Norris had had two previous heart attacks.A dark, well-spoken man, Norris was the president of the International Boxing Club for nine years starting in 1949. Norris offered $1,000,000 four years ago for Frank Mahovlich, star left winger for Toronto Maple Leafs. He was turned down.&ldquo;I was sincere,&rdquo; Norris said at the time. &ldquo;If they had made the deal, I would have put a competitor out of the way and we probably would have won the championship. That alone would be worth $1,000,000.&rdquo;Mr. Norris assumed ownership of the Black Hawks in 1952 after the team had finished in the cellar of the six-club NHL for three years. He and Wirtz, were reported to have poured more than $2,000,000 into the stumbling franchise. The Hawks have finished no lower than third during the last seven seasons and won the Stanley Cup in 1961.Mr. Norris inherited both his fortune and his interest in sports from his father, James Norris, Sr., a six-foot-two native of Montreal who was a squash rackets champion and a good tennis player. Hockey always was the elder Norris&rsquo; favorite sport, though.Norris, Sr., bought the Detroit Red Wings&rsquo; Hockey Club and at one time, the Norrises, Jim, Sr., Jim, Jr., Bruce and Marguerite, owned the Black Hawks, Chicago Stadium, Detroit Olympia and the Red Wings and had a majority interest in Madison Square Garden, which owns New York Rangers of hockey&rsquo;s big league.The situation was resolved after Jim Norris, Sr., died in 1952 when the younger Norris and Wirtz sold their one-third interest in the Olympia and the Red Wings to Bruce and Marguerite Norris.Mr. Norris is survived by his widow, Mary, and a daughter, Susan, both of Coral Gables, Fla., and Chicago; his mother, Ethel Norris, of Lake Forest, Ill.; Bruce Norris, a half-brother, and halfsister, Mrs. Marguerite John Ricker of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Arthur Kneibler of Chicago. &#9632;

Final Tribute Paid To James D. Norris

Clarence Campbell, president of the National Hockey League said the NHL &ldquo;has lost a gigantic figure.&rdquo;He said Mr. Norris &ldquo;was a tower of strength as chairman of the Owner&rsquo;s Committee and he did a wonderful job of rehabilitating the Chicago team back about 1954.&rdquo;Mr. Campbell said it &ldquo;is hard to visualize operation of the league without big Jim &hellip; he was a real leader and always had been a very dedicated de votee to hockey.&rsquo;Frank J. Selke, vice-chairman of the Montreal Canadiens&rsquo; board of directors, said Mr. Norris&rsquo; death left him &lsquo;shocked.&rdquo;&ldquo;I think Jim Norris has been my best friend in hockey outside of the Montreal organization,&rdquo; Selke said.&ldquo;Many people were very critical of him, but they don&rsquo;t have any idea how much he did for the game.&ldquo;Hockey players can. thank him for the generous salaries and many of the other benefits they enjoy today.&rdquo;David Molson, president of Mqntreal Canadiens, said: &ldquo;He is an old friend and partner and there is no question in my mind he has done a lot for hockey,&rdquo; Molson said.Molson said he did not know what steps will be taken to appoint an interim league governor at the moment.&ldquo;Mr. Arthur Wirtz, the coowner, has two sons who may take over operation of the club,&rdquo; he said.The Canadiens&rsquo; president said he believes appointment of a permanent governor to replace Mr. Norris may be held in abeyance until league meetings scheduled for New York City April 5.Stafford Smythe, president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, said &ldquo;the news completely shocked me.&rdquo;&ldquo;I have never known a man who devoted so much time, effort and inspiration to sport and hockey as big Jim. <div class="byline">BY GIL SMITH</div>MONTREAL, Que. &mdash;Jacques La perriere, who&rsquo;sconcerned with keeping enemy forwards out of the Canadiens zone, says Detroit&rsquo;s Norm Ullman gives him more trouble than anyone else.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-01562/2335938-1-eng-US/f0005-012.jpg" title="f0005-01" width="250" height="417"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jacques Laperriere</figcaption></div>&ldquo;Ullman is one of the best forecheckers in this league,&rdquo; says Jacques. &ldquo;He&rsquo;ll take the puck off you very quick, if you don&rsquo;t watch him. when you&rsquo;re trying to get it out of your own zone. Besides, he&rsquo;s very strong and is a tough man to stop in the corners.&rdquo;Laperriere, who was voted to the All-Star team along with Ullman last year, and again at the halfway mark this season, used to say that Dave Keon was the most troublesome of enemy players.&ldquo;Up till last season, I had a tough time with Keon,&rdquo; declares Jacques, &ldquo;But this year, I&rsquo;ve done better against him. Maybe I finally solved his style. Right now, Ullman is the guy I worry about the most.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-02519/2335931-1-eng-US/f0005-022.jpg" title="f0005-02" width="529" height="914"><figcaption class="caption-body">NORM ULLMAN &hellip; A Rare Tribute</figcaption></div>In discussing Ullman and the Detroit team in general, Laperriere comes up with an interesting theory about the &lsquo;jinx&rsquo; that Detroit held over the Habs in the Olympia. In his opinion, the dimensions of the rink in Detroit and. particularly, the size and shape of the corners, account for most of the Hab&rsquo;s woes in the Motor City.&ldquo;The rink isn&rsquo;t as wide as our own in the Forum,&rdquo; says Jacques, &ldquo;so naturally there&rsquo;s less space in the end zones. The way Detroit plays, they dump the puck into your end as they come over the blueline and one of their guys will streak for it, and try to feed it out in front. On a larger ice surface like the Forum.&rdquo; notes Jacques, &ldquo;they have trouble regaining possession of the puck after they&rsquo;ve dumped it in. But in the Olympia they regain possession quite often, and before you know&rsquo; it, the puck&rsquo;s in the net.&rdquo;Laperriere, who now&rsquo; has more scoring points than he managed in 67 games last season. is happy about the fact that he has avoided a prolonged second-half slump, such as he had last year.&ldquo;I feel that I&rsquo;m playing better defensively than I did in the second-half of last season,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Offensively, the points are not coming as fast as they did earlier, but I&rsquo;m still doing better than last year.&rdquo; At the present writing. Laperriere had six goals and 22 assists for a total of 28 points. Of those, 25 had been notched in the first half. He Was still the leading scorer among defensemen in the league, but was being pressed by teammate J. C. Tremblay and Chicago&rsquo;s Pat Stapleton and Pierre Pilote, all of whom had 26 points to their credit.Meanwhile, there was cause for a certain amount of optimism in the Canadiens camp as the month of February drew to a close. Habs were in a first-place tie with Chicago with 18 games left in the schedule. It was an exact duplication of a situation that prevailed in 1964, the last time Canadiens won the league championship. At that time, Toe Blake singled out the month of February as being the turning point in the race.&ldquo;If a team can be close to first place with 18 games to go,&rdquo; declared the coach, &ldquo;they&rsquo;ve got a good chance of winding up on top.&rdquo;This reasoning, of course, could be applied just as well to other teams like Chicago and Detroit, who were either in or near the first place with roughly the same number of games left to play. The only thing that seemed certain w&rsquo;as that there&rsquo;d be an all-out battle in the stretch between contending teams. &#9632;

All-Star Defense Jacques Laperriere Discloses Ullman Hardest To Stop

NEW YORK. N.Y.The appointment of Don V. Ruck as director of public relations of the National Hockey League has been announced by Clarence S. Campbell, president.Ruck will be in charge of a new NHL public relations office which will be opened this summer in New&rsquo; York city. This will be the first United States office in the 49-year history of the League.As director of public relations, Ruck will supervise all public relations activities of the NHL, both in the United States and Canada. In view of the league&rsquo;s projected expansion from six to 12 teams in October, 1967, it is expected that he will be especially active in the promotion of the new franchises in Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco-Oakland and St. Louis (or Baltimore).Ruck will also administer all NHL television and radio enterprises. As recently announced, the league is currently negotiating for a United States network color television coverage of certain of its games.At 38 years of age, Ruck has for the past 12 years been director of public relations of Connecticut Blue Cross, Inc. As such, he not only directed all state activities but was also active in national Blue Cross advertising and public relations matter.Previously, he was a sportswriter for various newspapers, including the New&rsquo; Haven Journal-Courier and the Hartford Courant. He was a 1952 graduate of the University of Connecticut.In announcing Ruck&rsquo;s appointment, President Campbell stated that the NHL was &ldquo;delighted to be able to add a man of Don Ruck&rsquo;s ability and experience to its expanded management team.&rdquo; The league recently appointed Brian F. O&rsquo;Neill, 37, of Montreal as its new administration manager, and it is expected that Ruck and O&rsquo;Neill will jointly constitute a second level of management under Campbell.Fred J. Hockey Fan Lauds ExpansionHockey News Editor:I just thought you might be interested in a L.A. fan&rsquo;s view of the new expansion. I formerly lived in New York and always thought six teams made for much too narrow a format for a real major league. We seemed to see the same teams over and over again. Now that I live in L.A. I have naturally been anxious for expansion. We have the sports enthusiasm and population to make this a tremendous franchise. The last thing we needed was another new arena, but if that has to go with getting an NHL berth, OK. Talk that there is not enough good talent to go around is nonsense. If a sport can&rsquo;t stock 12 major league teams, then it should not be a major league sport. If you cut the pro football or baseball leagues down to six teams each, they would be much stronger, but it would be an unrealistic strength.I am happy that Jack Kent Cooke got the NHL franchise here. Of course I do not know what he will do with it. He is talking of an arena, but not a word of a team or a coach. However, Dan Reeves had his chance and failed. The team has the worst record in the league during its existence, had only one good year, drew about half of what it should have drawn and was never promoted. It is just as well someone else is getting a chance and we&rsquo;ll just have to hope for the best. Some of the new expansion teams will rise above the others and rapidly approach NHL calibre, some will not. It read:&ldquo;The name of Murray Balfour, a Reginian who gained hockey fame with Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League and who died this year, age 28, was proposed to City Council Tuesday night for the Community Centre to be built at Broder St. and 14th Avenue.&rdquo;&ldquo;Council forwarded the suggestion to its parks community centre as it had done a week earlier with the suggestion that the Centre, which includes an ice rink, be named after Frank Boucher, Commissioner of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and a major promoter of the centre idea.&rdquo;&ldquo;Aid. Hewitt Helmsing said council welcomed the suggestions and added that if the subject got publicity, further ideas would give the committee a wide choice in recommendation of names.&rdquo;I think it would be wonderful if all the many friends and fans (all over the world) of the late Murray Balfour would write to the City Council, Regina, Saskatchewan, and suggest that the Centre be named in memory of our great, hero. Murray did so much for everyone of us &mdash; and this is such a little thing we could now do in his memory. Murray will never be forgotten.I ask for the support of all of you. Illinois Reader Wins Fan Award

At the half-way mark the Leafs&rsquo; rookie led the balloting with 59 points, ahead of Bert Marshall of Detroit with 49, Bernie Parent of Boston with 35.It looks like Brit Selby will give to the Leafs what was lost last year.If he does. Selby will join the company of Syl Apps, 1936-37, Gaye Stewart, 1942-43, Gus Bodnar, 1943-44, Frank Mahovlich, 1957-58, Dave Keon, 196061, and Kent Douglas, 1962-63 &mdash; the former Leafs who have won the Calder Memorial Trophy.Right from the start at the Leafs&rsquo; training camp at Peterborough the railbirds knew that a good rookie in Selby had come along. Dick Beddoes of the Globe and Mail noticed that Brit had &ldquo;elegant style&rdquo;Coach Punch Imlach was talking like a judge at a country fair when he said of Selby, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s my blue-ribboned baby&rdquo;.Even King Clancy waxed eloquent when he suggested, &ldquo;Selby is the structure of tomorrow.&rdquo;Harold Ballard, Maple Leaf Gardens&rsquo; executive vice-president, observed one day, &ldquo;He won&rsquo;t be one of the league&rsquo;s super stars like Howe or Hull, but he&rsquo;s going to be a fine player. He could definitely be the one who will lead this team in a few years&rsquo; time.&rdquo;Selby, who won&rsquo;t be 21 until March 27th, is approaching a 20-goal season, but last season in a three-game trial he scored two goals. He was also given his first assignment by Punch Imlach: &ldquo;Go out and check Howe. Stop him from scoring tonight.&rdquo;It was like giving an order to a new private arriving in Vietnam; &ldquo;Go out and stop that Viet Cong tank.&rdquo; Selby did stop the tank as Howe didn&rsquo;t score that night. His former junior coach Jim Gregory said, &ldquo;That&rsquo;s what I expected. When Stemkowski is in there it known as the Leafs&rsquo; new kid line. During this era, for those who think young, it has also been known as the &ldquo;Pepsi&rdquo; line. At Leaf home games they are one of the great entertaining lines. Usually the speed of Ellis or Selby gets the Leafs to open up. Selby has particularly tormented Boston Bruins this year, scoring 8 goals against them.Selby, Ellis and Stemkowski are also known as the &ldquo;bachelor line&rdquo; as all are unmarried, but Ellis deserts the ranks of the Benedicts this May when he marches to the altar after the Stanley Cup playoffs. At the Leafs&rsquo; annual Christmas party where wives and children show up, Selby skated with many of the Leaf children as a chaperone &ldquo;Panda&rdquo;, another name tacked on him during junior days with the Marlboros.For a while this year the Leafs thought they had another Carl Brewer on their hands. Like Brewer, Selby seems to hate airplanes. However, he is taking a positive approach to them and by the end of the season he thinks he will have conquered the nervous sensation that enters him any time he gets higher than a goal net.Selby is not a bashful rookie by no means, as is suggested in some quarters. His answers to questions are refreshingly candid. As an example he forthrightly says, &ldquo;Bobby Hull is the best hockey player I ever saw in my life. He is better than Howe.&ldquo;The defenceman who gives me the most trouble is Harry Howell of the New York Rangers. I have hard time getting around him. Maybe he clutches and grabs me too much. Before Doug Barkley got injured I had to watch him; he takes a run at you. Pierre Pilote is another who is hard to get around.&rdquo;Already Selby is developing a fan following. He is very cooperative with anyone who wants an autograph and he will even stop for photos. During the January 15th game when he scored a hat-trick against Boston, a blind youth approached Selby with an escort and Brit stood in the jammed corridor, which few players do, to get his photo taken with the boy.That same night his picture appeared on the program cover. He kidded, &ldquo;I had to score three so the programs would sell. My mother can&rsquo;t buy them all, you know.&rdquo;He is one of the &ldquo;educated elite&rdquo; that the Leafs are developing. He completed Grade 13 at Victoria Park last summer and he intends to go to Ryerson Institute for a course in business administration. His long range educational plans are to attend the University of Toronto when he is 23. Marriage after that. &#9632;

He couldn&rsquo;t get over it.&ldquo;In all the years I&rsquo;ve been counting shots on net I&rsquo;ve never had a guy get so many in one night,&rdquo; the Bruins&rsquo; one-man rotunda enthused. &ldquo;Thirteen in one game. Can ya imagine!&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-01617/2336162-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="281" height="417"><figcaption class="caption-body">Pit Martin</figcaption></div>Hubert Jacques (Pit) Martin is the Boston player he was talking about, the same young hustler who has changed the name of the Bruins&rsquo; game to &ldquo;run and shoot.&rdquo;The night Amari will long remember was the evening Martin led a 47-shot barrage against Detroit, scoring three goals and setting up the clincher in a 5-4 verdict over the visiting Red Wings. It was Pit&rsquo;s second &ldquo;hat trick&rdquo; since donning a Boston uniform at mid-season. Earlier he had scored four against Chicago&rsquo;s Glenn Hall &mdash; no easy mark on any night.Martin, 22, was firing from the hip against the Red Wings. Amari&rsquo;s log revealed he had eight of his 13 shots in the third period when the Bruins leveled an amazing 25 volleys at the Detroit net.After 22 games with Boston, Pit had a handsome personal collection of 15 goals, a tidy less-than-half-season&rsquo;s tally for one so young. But more than his own definitive explosion of superior NHL potential, Martin has given this 1965-66 Bruins edition an entirely new look, a high-octane shot in the arm that by comparison makes the classy &ldquo;Go-go&rdquo; gals look like slow-motion.The Bruins have suddenly become a team of gattling guns, a band of rapid-fire shooters who would put Chuck Connor to shame. In three games recently, the Bruins, who earlier this season had trouble putting 25 shots on the enemy&rsquo;s net any given night, amassed the unbelievable (for them) total of 120 &mdash; an average of no less than 40 per game.You ask how this change hath come about and the finger gets pointed, directly or indirectly, at Pit Martin. His &ldquo;quick-triggered-ness&rdquo; (if there is such a word) has rubbed off on everybody. And the Bruins&rsquo; management, employees; and fans couldn&rsquo;t be happier. Evidence: Boston&rsquo;s four wins, two ties, and just a pair of losses over one recent span.&ldquo;The reason Martin is scoring goals,&rdquo; Coach Milt Schmidt offered some time back, &ldquo;is because he doesn&rsquo;t fool around with the puck. When he has a shot he takes it. He doesn&rsquo;t waste time. He just lets the thing fly.&rdquo;Schmidt has been harping on this &ldquo;shoot-every-chance-you-get&rdquo; theme for years now. But apparently it took a &ldquo;watch-me&rdquo; guy like Martin to put the idea across. Since his arrival from Detroit&rsquo;s farm at Pittsburgh, the name of the game has been &ldquo;run and shoot.&rdquo;&ldquo;My theory,&rdquo; Martin explains, &ldquo;is not how hard you shoot. It&rsquo;s how FAST you shoot &mdash; how quick you can get it away. In practice I work on getting the shot away quickly, and from all angles. I feel the faster you can unload it, with the greatest surprise, the less chance the goalie has of stopping it.&rdquo;Linemate Ron Stewart, picked up from Toronto last June, has been one in particular who has thrived of late in the shadow of the Bruins&rsquo; young sharpshooter.As &ldquo;Stew&rdquo; told Tom Monahan of the Boston Traveler recently: &ldquo;He (Pit) has made me young again at 33. Until this kid came along I was struggling. The whole team was struggling. Then we got this kid and we also got John McKenzie from New York and things began to change. When Milt put me out to work with Martin it was the best thing that could have happened to me.&ldquo;You&rsquo;ve got to like the way this kid works and skates. He has the knack and he has the ability,&rdquo; Stewart went on. &ldquo;Playing with him you know that if the puck is in the corner and you go in and get it out, somehow or other he is going to be around the net in position to score.&ldquo;It only took me a couple of games to adjust to playing with him. I never have to look to see where he is. I know where he is and where he is going to be. He makes the game a pleasure.&rdquo;Suffice it to say Martin has the whole team hustling to keep up with him on both speed and firepower. And the Bruins to a man are enjoying every minute of it.As one player said: &ldquo;Everyone is flying now. We&rsquo;ve won a few and everyone is loose and relaxed and having fun. The guys believe in themselves now, and that&rsquo;s the most important thing.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s become a game again,&rdquo; said another. &ldquo;No more a drug-gery. It&rsquo;s a new feeling for most of us &mdash; like you don&rsquo;t mind going to work again, like you&rsquo;re proud to belong, to contribute, to take part &hellip;&rdquo;No, sir! <div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>DETROIT, Mich.A Stanley Cup in hand is worth a couple in the bushes to paraphrase an old Punch Imlach maxim.Sid Abel doesn&rsquo;t often go around quoting Imlach but the Imlach maxim certainly was in mind when he traded for defenseman Leo Boivin and left wing Dean Prentice of the Boston Bruins.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-01601/2336245-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="301" height="440"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dean Prentice</figcaption></div>It was simple: Get an experienced defenseman or forget about the Prince of Wales Trophy, forget about the Stanley Cup.The Prince of Wales Trophy, an imposing but little-publicized piece of hardware in the sport that prizes trophy-giving almost as much an industrial bowling league, is awarded to the first place team in case you&rsquo;d forgotten. The Red Wings currently own it.The Stanley Cup rests in Montreal hands and Abel would like to dislodge it.Seemingly, after making the deal with Boston, he certainly has as good a shot at it as anyone.In some quarters it was pointed out that the Wings became a bit longer in tooth by the trade. Boivin is 33. Even Floyd Smith and Norm Illman are 30.You don&rsquo;t need more than one hand to count the up-and-coming Red Wing stars in their early 20s. There&rsquo;s goalie Roger Crozier, 24 by playoff time; Bruce MacGregor, 24; Paul Henderson, 23; Bert Marshall, 22.This latest Wing-Bruin trade overjoyed Boivin and Prentice who haven&rsquo;t pocketed playoff money for longer than they care to remember.It&rsquo;s like a new life for Boivin who served Boston long and honorably and lately has received nothing but vilification from some of the fans. One quaint endorsement was: &ldquo;Boivin, why don&rsquo;t you get a 20-year penalty?&rdquo; It was getting to Boivin to the extent that he said he&rsquo;d quite the game rather than play another year in Boston.Coach Milt Schmildt pulled him out of one game, back before the Bruins got going, when the galleryites got on him, saying that Boivin had played too well to take that kind of abuse. &#9632;

Abel Hoping Trade Will Swing Cup For Red Wings

The latest were delivered by the Montreal Canadiens, who regularly dispatch the Blues.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01616/2336276-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="271" height="412"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bill Hicke</figcaption></div>Henri Richard, the genius center of Les Canadiens, pointed a menacing finger and several utterances at Rangers&rsquo; petulant Vic Hadfield. And Dick Duff alleges Bill Hicke speared him in the stomach.Two years ago, last season and this year, Richard and Hadfield battled but the last footer aw on Feb. 20 had a new twist. Richard won some points at Madison Square Garden.At the nine minute mark of the third period The Pocket Rocket dumped Hadfield to the right of the Canadien goal. Seconds later the 5-7, 157 pound Hab barrelled into the 6-0, 180 pound Hadfield behind the goal.&ldquo;Next thing I know dat guy has his arm around my head,&rdquo; says Richard in a soft English sugared with French overtones. &ldquo;What for? I&rsquo;ve done nothing to bother him.&rdquo;Richard fought so vigorously he lost his shirt. When he and Hadfield were separated the Ranger made overtures to resume the war.&ldquo;Hadfield likes to fight when the referee is holding,&rdquo; says Richard, &lsquo;otherwise, he&rsquo;s afraid.&rdquo;No less annoyed was Duff, the ex-Ranger who nearly decapitated Hicke with a machete like swing of the stick at 14:33 of the second period. Dick says there was a good reason for his petulance and points to a two-inch red welt on his stomach as Exhibit A.&ldquo;That was a spear Hicke gave me, says Duff. &ldquo;He did it to me once before and I said it must have been an accident, I&rsquo;ll let it go. But this was the second time &hellip; you just don&rsquo;t do those things.&rdquo;The Hicke-Duff rift is just a guerrilla skirmish compared to the Richard-Hadfield hostilities which appear capable of nuclear proportions because nobody will give in.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not going to take Henri off when Hadfield is on,&rdquo; says Montreal coach Toe Blake. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not worried about Henri at all &mdash; he proved he could take care of himself long ago.&rdquo;Ranger GM &mdash; coach Emile Francis puled Hadfield off the ice when the two emerged from the penalty box but Francis says it was only because of a line change; he&rsquo;d play Hadfield against Richard most anytime. Hadfield thinks that&rsquo;s fine. &#9632;

Rangers-Canadiens’ Feud Still Simmers

All hail Maniago, noblest for a while&mdash;Ranger of them all.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-02537/2336307-1-eng-US/f0010-022.jpg" title="f0010-02" width="258" height="388"><figcaption class="caption-body">Cesare Maniago</figcaption></div>Long like a beanstalk, lean like a lightweight champ, Cesare Maniago on Feb. 23 did what no Ranger goaltender has done since Christmas 1964. He scored a shutout; a 5-0 rout of the Detroit Red Wings.By flawlessly stopping 23 Detroit shots, Maniago proved several important points. Namely, he&rsquo;s clearly superior to alternate goalie Ed Giacomin; the Blues win with his (6-6) while they&rsquo;re &lsquo;way below .500 with Giacomin; and they could be a playoff team with Cesare in goal.&ldquo;If he&rsquo;s winning you won&rsquo;t see him come out of there,&rdquo; says GM-coach Emile Francis. &ldquo;Why he could have had a shutout last Saturday (Blues beat Toronto, 3-1) Cesare was that good.&rdquo;Maniago was so expert he won a standing ovation from the 11,727 prayerful witnesses when he was called out on ice for a bow as the game&rsquo;s number one star.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s my first shutout ever in the NHL,&rdquo; the 6-2&frac12; inch goalie said later in the dressing room. Then, he reached down and picked up the puck from the bench and fondled the vulcanized rubber. &ldquo;Here&rsquo;s the old baby.&rdquo;Such awesome Red Wing shots as Gordie Howe, Alex Devecchio and Norm Ullman were stopped by Maniago, when it counted most, in the first and second periods. First NHL Shutout Is Maniago’s Big Thrill

Jean Beliveau of the Canadiens has his sights set on becoming the National Hockey League&rsquo;s next 400-goal scorer, an honor that should come to the Montreal giant in the first part of the 1966-67 season.Beliveau scored his 378th and 379th goals of his illustrious NHL career last weekend to tie him with retired Ted Lindsay of Detroit for third place in the all-time goalscoring race.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-03457/2336338-1-eng-US/f0010-032.jpg" title="f0010-03" width="274" height="436"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jean Beliveau</figcaption></div>Needing only one more to take his place behind Gordie Howe and Maurice Richard as third highest sniper in NHL history, Beliveau could easily add another 10 goals before the current campaign is through since the Canadiens have 16 games remaining to play. If he succeeds, it would give him 31 for the year and enable him to start next season off with a career high of 389 &mdash; 11 short of the 400 plateau.Beliveau, playing his 13th NHL season, has already passed his scoring output of last year with his 21st goal last weekend. It also marked the 10th time in 13 years, he has scored 20 or more goals since coming into the NHL.Simon&rsquo;s is pleased to salute Jean Beliveau as the NHL&rsquo;s player-of-the-week. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>DETROIT, Mich.Paul Henderson, rated the Wings&rsquo; next superstar, saw his 20th goal of the season also turn into his ninth game winner of the campaign Henderson scored only eight goals last season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-01613/2336400-1-eng-US/f0011-012.jpg" title="f0011-01" width="274" height="438"><figcaption class="caption-body">Paul Henderson</figcaption></div>Almost all of Henderson&rsquo;s goals have come from left wing &mdash; he&rsquo;s a right hander. He was posted to Norm Ullman&rsquo;s line when Ullman returned to pivot his own unit at the end of December after a month with Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio.This is only the second full NHL season for Henderson, his third as a pro.Patrons are going up-up-up at Olympia.The Red Wings got their new escalator working for a Boston-Toronto weekend and opened 650 new second balcony seats as well as the combination produced 13,866 fans for the Bruin game and 14,187 for the Maple Leafs, tops for both clubs in Detroit this season.Larger crowds have been announced in past years but when Olympia decided on its expansion program last spring, it admitted that it had puffed the attendance figures and really had something like 11,333 seats instead of the 12,500 it claimed.The building now seats 13,375 and can take 3,000 standees.And, Olympia is the only stadium in the National Hockey League that can boast padded seats, right up to the top row in the building.Wing boss Sid Abel was disturbed by the nose-dive of Central League farm club Memphis and sent chief scout and trouble shooter Jim Skinner down to see what was going on.&ldquo;I insulted some of them,&rdquo; Skinner said simply.He did it before a Friday-Saturday-Sunday schedule against the top clubs and Memphis won two of the games and tied the other.Skinner came back very high on native Detroiter Doug Roberts who turned down a football career for hockey. Roberts, an All-State end in high school and letterwinner at Michigan State, is a big, husky youngster.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s the kind I like,&rdquo; Skinner said of the big right winger. &ldquo;He doesn&rsquo;t take the long way around &mdash; he goes right through them.&rdquo; &#9632;

They haven&rsquo;t been sorry.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a fine young player and he&rsquo;s going to go places,&rdquo; general manager Ferny Flaman said recently. &ldquo;Wayne has plenty of talent. All he needs is the experience!&rdquo;Muloin&rsquo;s progress has been amazing the past few weeks. Despite three previous full seasons in the pro ranks, he was a raw rookie by AHL standards when he arrived in mid-December.One of the biggest assets is an ability to skate. This, combined with a fearless attitude, makes him a dangerous body checker.&ldquo;He clears the puck well, too,&rdquo; says Ivan Irwin, his coach. &ldquo;Muloin seems to have all the necessary ingredients to become a real star. Who knows, with this new National League expansion, he could become another Pierre Pilote!&rdquo;Regardless of the future, the popular Muloin is making his mark right now as a rookie member of the Reds.Beware, opposing forwards. Muloin Hits Best Form With Reds

But even tougher for a 21-year old rookie defenseman with only a dozen or so brief pro appearances.That&rsquo;s where young Jim Cardiff found himself a few weeks ago when the Pittsburgh Hornets were short a regular defenseman. They were playing in Quebec and had already taken the first of a two game series.The 165 pound native of Dauphin, Manitoba played that night and played well as the Hornets held off a last-ditch rally by the Aces to win the game, 5-4, and become the first AHL club to sweep a series in the Canadian city this season. As the schedule rolls into its final phases, they are still the only Western Division team to win a game in Quebec.Cardiff, who played Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; hockey last season for the Weyburn Red Wings in Saskatchewan, has been playing regularly ever since. Even though the Hornets have faltered of late, no one is blaming the scrappy youngster.&ldquo;Jimmy&rsquo;s playing well, and I can use him in any situation with confidence,&rdquo; praised Coach Eddie Bush in referring to the fine play turned in by Cardiff.Since the parent Detroit Red Wings have traded Gary Doak, another rookie, to the Boston Bruins, Cardiff is certain of seeing plenty of action for the balance of the season. Whether he maintains his regular status depends on any personnel changes made by Detroit.Cardiff has been the Hornets&rsquo; fifth defenseman for most of the season. As such he did not see too much action and even made a brief appearance as a wing.Although he stands only 5&rsquo;9&rdquo; and isn&rsquo;t the big, bruising type of blue-liner, he has held his own. Bush paired him with veteran Pete Goegan and the two are working well together. &#9632;

Earlier in the campaign, the club ran off an eight game unbeaten skein on home ice.Part of the reason for the team&rsquo;s most recent success has been the line play of center Gil Gilbert and his wingmen, Wayne Rivers and Gene (The Jet) Ubriaco.In their last four starts, the trio tallied seven goals and figured in ten more for 17 points. They popped in a game winner and two tieing markers in the short stretch.At the same time, goalie Claude Dufour has turned in one brilliant performance after another in the eight game unbeaten string. In a 500 minute span, the veteran cage cop allowed only 16 goals, while turning in 247 saves, his finest stretch of the season.Hershey&rsquo;s defensive corps of Howie Yanosik, Ralph Keller, Nick Polano, Mike Mahoney and Paul Popiel, not only has done an effective job of checking, but also has contributed to the offense since the club began rolling in high gear.The five blueliners combined for seven goals, while aiding in 24 more for a whopping 31 points beginning with a Feb. 5 match against Buffalo.Yanosik paces the pack with ten points, including eight assists, while Popiel showed two goals and four assists.Defenseman Barry Ashbee, sidelined in early January with a neck injury, is expected to be ready for action any day. At the same time, the Bears learned they lost center Bruce Draper for the balance of the season following an operation for a gland condition. Dufour’s Brilliant Net Play Sparks Eight-Game Unbeaten Streak For Bears

Y.A year ago, Jack Stanfield played in all of the Buffalo Bisons&rsquo; 72 regularseason games, collected 19 goals and 20 assists, and followed with two goals and five assists in nine Calder Cup playoff games.All in all, it was a most satisfying rookie season for the sturdy left-winger, and gave promise of better things to come.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-03497/2336820-1-eng-US/f0013-032.jpg" title="f0013-03" width="295" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jack Stanfield</figcaption></div>The signs were wrong. This fall, Stanfield trained with the parent Chicago Back Hawks, rejoined the Bisons on the eve of the opener, and has been plagued by problems ever since.An ailing back has bothered him most. A pulled groin muscle and a tender knee have made things worse. Stanfield never really found himself.But a three-goal performance against the Quebec Aces has eased matters somewhat. As this edition of THE HOCKEY NEWS went to press, Stanfield had 11 goals, and two three-goal jobs against the powerful Aces.&ldquo;When the goals finally come, it&rsquo;s just as well they come against the best,&rdquo; Stanfield said.Now he&rsquo;s waiting for the season to end, so he can rest his back long enough to get it well again. Stanfield is a golf pro during the summer months, and is confident his back condition won&rsquo;t interfere with his golf activities.ALONG THE BOARDS &mdash; Larry Wilson has been one of the most resourceful Bisons in recent games, and may reconsider plans to retire at season&rsquo;s end. Now 35, Wilson underwent surgery twice within nine months on his left knee, but is skating as well as ever &hellip; Attendance perked up despite the club&rsquo;s firm hold on last place in the Western Division. Crowds of just under 5,000 attended two Sunday games with Cleveland and Quebec the opposition. &#9632;

The American Bowling Congress Champions have forced the Americans out of their building and out of the city. They&rsquo;ll play their final 10 home dates in Toronto&rsquo;s Maple Leaf Gardens.While Rochester neither started or closed its War Memorial season with a win, it certainly piled up enough in between. The local icemen lost their home opener to Quebec, then rung up 22 victories and a tie against only one defeat before settling for a 4-4 deadlock with Hershey in the finale.There are a few of the Amerks who must be sorry the club had to leave the War Memorial early.Take Jim Pappin for example. He only played in 22 of the 26 games here because he started with Toronto, but in the 22 outings, he scored 19 goals and assisted on 27 others for 46 points. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY SHEL FULLERTON</div>CLEVELAND, Ohio &mdash;When it soon becomes time to mark ballots for the American Hockey League&rsquo;s AllStar Team, those with pencils poised over ballots would do well to give careful consideration to the Cleveland Barons&rsquo; Leslie John Binkley when they get to the position of goaltender.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-06327/2336958-1-eng-US/f0013-062.jpg" title="f0013-06" width="289" height="429"><figcaption class="caption-body">Les Binkley</figcaption></div>As much as to any other single player, the Barons owe credit to Binkley for the remarkable record of the team that has climbed from a nine-game deficit behind Pittsburgh five weeks ago to a tie for second place in the Western Division at this writing.Throughout the streak that, as of now, has carried the Barons to six straight wins, victories in 12 of their last 13 games on home ice and 16 wins in their last 19 starts, Binkley has been superb.He missed six of these games when he was sidelined with an injury but little Jean - Guy Morissette did a thoroughly capable job of filling in.Binkley has been the Barons&rsquo; regular netminder for the past five seasons. He has been a good one throughout. In the 1963-64 season, he was a great one. This year, he is a greater one.Fairly large as goaltenders go, an even six feet and 175 pounds, Binkley is gifted with a pair of the fastest hands in hockey. &#9632;

Barons’ Binkley Deserving Of All-Star Goaling Votes

<div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div>VICTORIA, B.C. &mdash;As Western League teams began play in the 20th of the season&rsquo;s 26 weeks, Portiand had opened up a five - point lead over Victoria and had two games in hand. The Bucks will have to collapse in the stretch for the Leafs to regain the lead they held for the first 18 weeks of the season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-01573/2337003-1-eng-US/f0014-012.jpg" title="f0014-01" width="295" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Al Millar</figcaption></div>Victoria did not win one of the seven games it played before Milan Marcetta and Fred Hucul returned from their two-week &ldquo;loan&rdquo; to Tulsa. &ldquo;If the boys would quit feeling sorry for themselves, &ldquo;they would be better off,&rdquo; said manager Buck Houle.Slumping Al Millar, who had given up 29 goals in his last six games, was benched in favor of rookie Gary Holland in a game in San Francisco. The Seals won 2-1, but Leaf coach Frank Mario said. &ldquo;It was our best defensive effort in more than a month.&rdquo;When Marcetta and Hucul came back, big, promising defenseman Jack Chipchase was returned to Tulsa, but Ed Ehrenverth stayed in the West, swapped to Seattle for rookie centre Ken Campbell, who had been popular with Northwest fans, but erratic.Seattle also lost goalie Ernie Wakely, sold by his parent Montreal club to Quebec City, which had run short on netminders, Rookie Gary Beauman flopped in a 13-5 loss in San Francisco. However, with young Junior B Rogatein Vachon in the nets. Quebec tripped L.A. 5-2. Winning 5-3 in Seattle and losing 6-2 in Vancouver, Quebec split even in its four-game tour of the West, leaving the AHL with a 30-22-2 margin over the WHL. Jimmy McLeod will stay in the nets for Seattle.It is hard to believe, but young Dave Kelly made at least a dozen great saves in his Portland team&rsquo;s stunning 10-0 loss in L.A. Leo LaBine and Buddy Boone scored three-goal &ldquo;hat tricks.&rdquo; Warren Hynes scored a hat-trick in a 5-4 overtime loss in San Francisco. The Blades, who lost 9-0 and 10-4 games in Portland earlier this season, are currently sizzling. Norm Johnson and Willie O&rsquo;Ree are playing big league hockey and La-Bine has broken a slump. The line of O&rsquo;Ree, Hynes and Jimmy Baird has scored 32 goals in the 15 games since it was formed.Billy McNeill of Vancouver scored five points in three games last week to open up a five-point margin on Portland&rsquo;s Cliff Schmautz in the WHL scoring race. McNeill has 76 points, Schmautz held his goal-scoring lead by netting his 33rd. Johnson now has 68 points, while LaBine and O&rsquo;Ree have 31 and 26 goals, respectively. Hynes suffered a separated shoulder in the rout of Portland, unfortunately.The Blades moved to the top in WHL goal-scoring with 191. but they&rsquo;re 246 goals permitted is 62 more than the next weakest team on defence has allowed. The shutout of Portland by Jack Norris was the first against the Bucks by a WHL foe this season and the first against anyone by Norris since Nov. 8. 1964. He may be able to share the job with Marcel Pelletier effectively the rest of the way. WHL Summaries

SEATTLE, WashGordon Sinclair of Seattle is so thin you want to hang your hat on him, but instead you wind up tipping it to him. There have been a lot of small, light players who had loads of talent and have starred for years in the minors, but never made it to the NHL because of a lack of size, but few have been defensemen, as Sinclair is, and he&rsquo;s one of the best.Sinclair is 5-10 and weighs just 155 pounds, but he&rsquo;s tough and he&rsquo;s shrewd. Despite his scrawny build, he&rsquo;s one of the few good bodycheckers around, he plays the back-line cleverly, skates very well, handles the puck well, passes and shoots sharply.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-04313/2337190-1-eng-US/f0015-042.jpg" title="f0015-04" width="302" height="441"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gordon Sinclair</figcaption></div>Thin as he is, he has stood up to punishment well throughout his career, but this year he has been racked up a bit, first with a pulled muscle in his shoulder, then with an ankle injury, and if Seattle is having trouble hanging on to a playoff berth it is probably due as much to the absences of its star Sinclair as much as anything else.Sinclair made first all-star for the fifth time last season and was vieing with the Hucul brothers of Victoria, Larry Cahan of Vancouver, Connie Madigan of Portland, Gerry Odrowski of San Francisco and Jake Hendrickson and Ray LaRose of L A. for similar honors this season.This is Sinclair&rsquo;s 12th year as a pro and all have been spent in the Western League. In fact, after a break-in campaign at New Westminster, all have been spent in Seattle. And if he has been slowed by injuries now, it is probably as much because he is now 33 years of age as much as it is lack of heft.Sinclair says, &ldquo;It is true that once you pass 30, you do seem to get hurt more, and especially do seem to take longer getting over injuries. You even get cut more. I don&rsquo;t know why, unless it&rsquo;s because you&rsquo;re not moving as fast or as agile as before and don&rsquo;t evade trouble as well.&ldquo;No one likes to feel that&rsquo;s he&rsquo;s slowed down. I don&rsquo;t notice anything different in my play. Experience makes up for a lot. Maybe I don&rsquo;t have to work as hard to get the same results as a few years ago.&rdquo;The Vancouver-born star played junior in Trail, was signed to a Seattle contract by Frank Dotson and never had an NHL shot. &ldquo;I guess they looked at my weight and forgot about me,&rsquo;&rsquo; he smiles.There isn&rsquo;t too much ice in Vancouver, so Sinclair didn&rsquo;t really learn to skate until he was in his teens, later than most hockey players, but he says, &ldquo;My skating makes up for a lot of things I don&rsquo;t do so well.&rdquo;Actually, he played some forward in his beginning years, but was moved back in an emergency and liked it so well and did so well, he&rsquo;s stayed there. &ldquo;You get a lot more ice time on defense. I don&rsquo;t find my lack of heft too much of a handicap, though I feel like I could use 20 more pounds when I start wrestling one of those big guys, like Billy McNeill of Vancouver, in front of the cage. It&rsquo;s a real struggle sometimes.&rdquo;He has scored 14 goals in three different seasons and hit his high of 56 points in 1964. He put in 80 or more minutes in penalties sbme years back, but recent seasons has held it to 50 minutes or so. &#9632;

Seattle’s 155-Pound Star, Sinclair Proof Little Man Can Succeed In Pro Hockey

<div class="byline">By Bill Libby</div><h2>Vancouver Lacked Support</h2>The National Hockey League&rsquo;s decision to place one of its new expansion franchises in St. Louis, where there was not a bidder, instead of Vancouver, which had been &ldquo;assured&rdquo; a berth, has stirred up a storm of protest in the west, as well as in all of Canada. It was a mistake. The new division should have had at least one team in Canada. And Vancouver could have supported a team as well as any city. Writing in the Vancouver Sun, Denny Boyd goes so far as to suggest the neglected franchise holders along the Pacific Coast take the $2,000,000 they would have to pay for an NHL berth, bid for established players to jump to their circuit, declare themselves big league and fight the NHL.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-08158/2337228-1-eng-US/f0015-082.jpg" title="f0015-08" width="273" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">George Fleharty</figcaption></div>Cyrus McLean, president of the Vancouver Canucks, adopted a more moderate view when he voiced his disappointment: &ldquo;We would do anything to meet the NHL requirements. We would bring in anybody into our group. But I don&rsquo;t think the presence of Frank McMahon and Max Bell in our group would have changed anything. I don&rsquo;t think it was ever in the cards for Vancouver to get a franchise. The biggest single blow was that we got no support from eastern Canada. We made it plain: If we&rsquo;re doing this wrong, tell us and we&rsquo;ll go back.&rdquo; Obviously, he is still hopeful. If the planned 15,000-seat rink is built anyway, Vancouver may be admitted later. We hope so.<h2>Blades May End Operation</h2>In San Francisco, the people do not feel they gained an NHL franchise, but lost one to Oakland. San Francisco is a great town, but they should have built a new indoor arena there long, long ago. It does not look like Los Angeles will have hockey next season. Dan Reeves returned from the National Football League&rsquo;s meetings in Miami this week and conferred with his hockey partner, Dan Martin, and their lawyers to determine their course of action following their loss of the Franchise to Jack Kent Cooke. &ldquo;I just don&rsquo;t know what we will do yet,&rdquo; Reeves told us. It is likely he will take legal action. It is unlikely he will continue to operate the WHL&rsquo;s Blades after this season. He may sell the club to Bob Breitbard, who expects to operate in the WHL in San Diego&rsquo;s new arena next season. He is not likely to get together with Cooke on any deal. He offered Cooke the majority interest in the Blades in the early stages of the NHL bidding last year, but they could not agree on terms. Now, the two are former friends.Both Cooke in L.A. and George Fleharty in San Francisco have talked to Breitbard about the possibilities of operating their main farm club in San Diego beginning with the 1967-68 season. Meanwhile, Blade manager and coach Lynn Patrick, who has two good offers from the East, is unfortunately caught in the middle. He would like to stay in Southern California, but is in no position to do anything to further this ambition. He has another year remaining on his Blade contract, but doesn&rsquo;t know what is going to happen to the organization or to those under contract to it. He would fit nicely into the new L.A. team as farm and scouting chief.<h2>Cooke Eyes Laycoe For L.A.</h2>Hal Laycoe of Portland is No. 1 on Cooke&rsquo;s list of prospective managercoaches for his new team in L. A. This does not mean he will get Laycoe, but it means he will try when he can do so properly. He is also interested in another prominent Westerner for the key business position on the new club. Meanwhile, Laycoe is primarily concerned with his obligations to Portland, especially retaining the WHL pennant, which is just what he and his team are doing.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-09147/2337221-1-eng-US/f0015-092.jpg" title="f0015-09" width="248" height="387"><figcaption class="caption-body">Con Madigan</figcaption></div>Laycoe says our selection of his Bucks to finish second, instead of first, has inspired his club to beat out Victoria. He says when we called the Bucks &ldquo;cocky&rdquo; recently we added additional stimulus. We asked him if he wished us to give his team the pep-talk before a recent game in L.A. He said we had only to poke our head in the dressing-room, which we did and found everyone pleasant. He made a mistake. His Bucks needed our pep-talk. They played one of the few bad games they have played all season. It is incredible to imagine the last-place team beating the first-place team 10-0, but that is what happened. Henceforth, we will call the Bucks &ldquo;humble&rdquo; instead of &ldquo;cocky&rdquo;. And we will refer to Hal as &ldquo;Loveable Laycoe.&rdquo; We work for Sports, Car-Life, True, Argosy, Pageant, The Saturday Evening Post and other magazines, but nowhere do we meet more interesting people than we do in our work for THE HOCKEY NEWS. &ldquo;Loveable Laycoe&rdquo; is certainly interesting.In a recent story, we stumbled over our typewriter. We wrote that Con Madigan had bopped some Portland players. Connie does not very often fuss with his own teammates, though he did fuss with his aging coach in L.A., Alfie Pike, onetime in a hotel room, which is why he is not longer in L.A. It was Larry McNab of San Francisco who bopped some Bucks. We just got them mixed up for a moment. Both are prominent boppers, of course. And Madigan is playing tremendous hockey, by the way. When we used to write that he was underrated in L. A., people thought we were crazy, but now they recognize that he is one of the best defensemen in the minors. They also thought we were crazy when we said two years ago big-league expansion would be launched within two years. Some still insist it will not come about in the end. They also insist that if you sail far enough, you will go over the edge of the earth and drop into a bottomless void. One writer suggests that if the denied interests continue to operate within Western League teams in Los Angeles&rsquo; Sports Arena and San Francisco&rsquo;s Cow Palace, they would make thing very uncomfortable for the new NHL entries. Sure, they would. Sure. &#9632;

They know what it is to play in those games where one goal makes the difference. Those are the pressure games and up to now my players have stayed with it for a full 60 minutes and any time the other club makes a mistake, we want to hustle in and take advantage of it,&rdquo; he says.Pete Panagabko, who like his coach never attained major hockey playing status, spearheads the offense and hi his first 50 games came through with 18 goals and 29 assists for 47 points. Next in line was Skip Krake, 22-year-old centerman, who had 17 goals and 24 assists over the same number of games.Goalie John Henderson, loaned to the Blazers when Gerry Cheevers was sidelined with a shoulder injury, was recalled by the San Francisco Seals and Doug Favell was wearing the big pads as the club retained its momentum staying at the top of the heap.Jim Roederer, president of the Oklahoma City All Sports Association and the Blazers was given a special citation by Mayor George Shirk of Oklahoma City at a Press Club luncheon.In paying tribute to Roederer who was also instrumental in bringing professional baseball to Oklahoma City, Mayor Shirk said, &ldquo;A lot of people had the ideas that Jim Roederer had but until he moved here, the ideas didn&rsquo;t become reality.ST. <div class="byline">BY HARVEY POLLACK</div>CLINTON, N.Y.If the Clinton Comets could get the home ice advantage in the Eastern Hockey League playoffs, they would be well nigh unbeatable in the post - season competition.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0017-1517/2337558-1-eng-US/f0017-152.jpg" title="f0017-15" width="273" height="432"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gene Achtymichuk</figcaption></div>The club posted a magnificent home record last year but this year&rsquo;s team is doing almost as well. They captured 24 straight home tilts by late February and took every team in the league in this great stretch.The Comets haven&rsquo;t lost at home since Long Island turned the trick back on Nov. 10. Clinton had some difficulty getting started and no one would have thought that a team that won only two of its first six home starts would eventually win 24 straight. But that&rsquo;s what Pat Kelly&rsquo;s club has accomplished after losing twice to Long Island and once to Knoxville plus deadlocking Nashville.It makes no difference to Kelly&rsquo;s charges whether they play here or at Utica. The Comets are the only club in the league which has two steady home rinks although Jacksonville does play half a dozen games at St. Petersburg. But Clinton has been splitting its home games since the Utica rink became available for their games.Kelly would love to finish first in the Northern Division and also post a better record than Nashville, the Southern Division pacemaker. His club would then have the home rink advantage in all series, and Kelly feels that edge could bring the EHL crown here.Even if it doesn&rsquo;t happen, Kelly is still confident about the playoffs. His club has done well at Long Island and like most northern clubs, Kelly feels that his division is stronger than the south this year.JACKSONVILLE: Alf Treen&rsquo;s bad toe kept him on sidelines and forced club to play some games with 9 men. <div class="byline">BY BOB REED</div>FORT WAYNE, Ind.Two International Hockey League cities came up with thumping big crowds on a recent weekend.Fort Wayne and Des Moines combined for a total of 16,070 in two games played in those cities on Friday and Saturday nights.Fort Wayne&rsquo;s Komets continued their tremendous box office showing when they had a sellout crowd of 8,057, largest of the season. Although the box office stopped selling tickets and many fans were turned away, the announced figure was a few short of last year&rsquo;s record of 8,100. The Komets are over the 5,000 mark in average attendance this season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-01321/2337627-1-eng-US/f0018-012.jpg" title="f0018-01" width="291" height="444"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bob Bailey</figcaption></div>At Des Moines the Oak Leafs staged a &ldquo;Kids&rsquo; Night&rdquo; and had a crowd of 8,013. <div class="byline">BY JACK GATECLIFF</div>TORONTO, Ont.Jim Gregory, darkhaired and usually of a quiet nature, loves hockey.That&rsquo;s why he took on the position of property man with Toronto St. Michael&rsquo;s College Majors when he was attending school.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-01297/2337727-1-eng-US/f0019-012.jpg" title="f0019-01" width="295" height="426"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jim Gregory</figcaption></div>And that&rsquo;s why he gave up a promising job as a salesman to coach the Marlboros three years ago.Jim Gregory has now advanced all the way from property man to general manager of the Marlboros in the Toronto Maple Leaf amateur farm system.And he still loves hockey.However it&rsquo;s safe to say that both he and his coach Gus Bodnar will heave a sigh of relief when the 1965-66 season is over.So far they&rsquo;ve had nothing but trouble &hellip; serious trouble.On paper the Marlboros, before the season opened, were rated as the team to beat for the OHA junior A championship.The big problem is that the Marlies have usually had more players on paper than on the bench almost since the schedule opened.Only three players have participated in every game because of a variety of injuries and instead of finishing on top, or at least in the first division of the junior group, the Marlboros will almost certainly end in sixth position.Still on the casualty list going into last weekend&rsquo;s games were veteran forwards Jim Keon and Jim Davidson, both out with leg injuries.Jim Cassidy, who must be trying for some sort of world record, broke his hand for the third time this season 10 days ago, putting a big hole in the Toronto defence.Keon, Davidson and Cassidy are not expected to play again this year.Just to add to their miseries two other standouts were sidelined when Barry Watson, high-scoring son of former National Hockey League star Harry Watson, suffered torn knee ligaments and will almost certainly eliminate him until the 1966-67 schedule.However the most severe blow came with the loss of Wayne Carleton.Carleton, one of the most highly-rated forwards in Canadian junior hockey has played only briefly the past year and a half because of chronic knee miseries.He returned after apparently successful operations to fulltime duty five weeks ago and in his first 13 games scored a respectable eight goals.A week ago he again failed to report for duty and doctors this time diagnosed his ailment as monucleosus.This is the same illness which kept St. Catharines&rsquo; Black Hawk defenceman Glen Sherwood off the ice for the first three months of the present season.&ldquo;It hurts because they&rsquo;re all veterans&rsquo;&rsquo;, Coach Bodnar told Toronto Telegram reporter John Robertson. &ldquo;You replace a Carleton or a Watson with a rookie and you have to figure they&rsquo;ll make more mistakes.&rdquo;However neither Bodnar nor Gregory have given up the ship.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been going surprisingly well in recent weeks,&rdquo; said Bodnar. &ldquo;We may still cause a few surprises in the playoffs.&rdquo;Despite the injuries the Marlboros have been playing close to .500 hockey and last week split their two games, trouncing Hamilton Red Wings 8-2 in Hamilton, then suffering a 5-0 shutout to the junior Canadiens in Montreal before tying Peterborough 4-4.Regardless of what happens the rest of the season and into the playoffs it&rsquo;s safe to say that Bodnar and Gregory are looking forward to the four months rest in the summer.The way they figure it, things just have to improve next season. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY AL BRENNAN</div>NORTH BAY, Ont.When it comes to selecting the most successful coach in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association over the past six years, North Bay Trapper skipper Howie Parker would have to rate right at the head of the pack.Since the formation of the NOHA Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; circuit back in the 1962-63 campaign, Parker has guided the Trappers to three first place finishes, one league championship and a third place showing, his club never failing to make a playoff spot. The only time he failed to wind up on top was in &rsquo;62-63 and the Trappers were right in contention until the final weekend when they lost a pair of games to Sault, Ont. and Sault, Michigan to drop to third.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-1262/2337876-1-eng-US/f0019-122.jpg" title="f0019-12" width="284" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Howie Parker</figcaption></div>Prior to that, Parker took North Bay Rangers to the NOHA Junior &ldquo;B&rdquo; crown in 1961-62 and North Bay Trappers to a &ldquo;B&rdquo; championship in 1960-61. A key member of this team was Mattawa product, Roger Lafreniere, who now holds down a defense berth with Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League.Although it isn&rsquo;t official yet, this season will probably be Parker&rsquo;s final one at the Trapper helm. A Grade 7 school teacher, he has reportedly accepted an offer to teach at th Northern Ontario Institute of Technology in Kirkland Lake next fall. He&rsquo;ll also pilot the school hockey team.&ldquo;I had been thinking along the lines of a coaching job with one of those United States colleges,&rdquo; he commented, &ldquo;but this offer from Kirkland Lake came along in the meantime.&rdquo;While his current Trapper team just recently nailed down their third straight first place finish, Parker isn&rsquo;t counting the other three clubs out of the playoff picture by any means. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s nice to wind up on top, but it doesn&rsquo;t mean a thing in the playoffs. Even the advantage of home ice doesn&rsquo;t mean that much anymore in our league. Any one of the four clubs has a good chance to come through in the playoffs as far as I&rsquo;m concerned,&rdquo; he remarked.Looking back on his NOHA coaching career, Parker&rsquo;s fondest memories revolve around the 1964-65 campaign, despite the fact the Trappers were defeated in the finals by Garson-Falconbridge Native Sons. &ldquo;I guess that season gave me the most pleasure,&rdquo; Howie continued. &ldquo;We lost nine players from the previous year&rsquo;s squad and still managed to wind up in first place.&rdquo;With the Southern Group playoffs ready to start, the Trappers received some good news when young Ab DeMarco returned to blueline duty after being sidelined with an eye injury. DeMarco was struck in the eye by a high-stick while playing for the league all-stars against the touring Finnish National team and was out of action for 14 games. &#9632;

Top Coach Howie Parker Leads Trappers Home Again

Kelley, who was an All East defenseman himself at Boston University a few years back, has had a string of All America defensemen since he first began coaching college hockey of Colby College in 1955.It is for this reason that a lot of ears perked up when Kelley claimed, &ldquo;Pete McLachlan and Brian Gilmour are the best defensemen in Eastern college hockey; and together they are probably the best tandem in college hockey.&rdquo;McLachlan, a junior from Newmarket, Ont, and Gilmour, a junior from Lancaster, Ont., are second-cousins who have made guarding Boston University&rsquo;s defensive zone a family affair. As freshmen two years ago. they combined on defense to help the Terrier &ldquo;Pups&rdquo; to their first undefeated (15-0-1) season in BU freshman history. Last year as sophomores, they were instrumental in the varsity rolling up its best record in history (25-6-0). And this season, BU is currently tied for first place honors in the East with a 20-4-0 record.&ldquo;Defense is the key to our success,&rdquo; says Kelley, and he points to the best defensive record last year in American college hockey to back up his claim BU finished its 31 game schedule with a 2.1 defensive average, and scored at the rate of 5.3 per game. Also impressive were the eight shutouts turned in by All America goalie Jack Ferreira of Providence, R.I. However, the defensemen gave Ferreira tremendous help, allowing only 650 shots on net, while opposing goalies had to handle 1,347 chances.As for McLachlan and Gilmour&rsquo;s part in the success, Kelley points to their many talents. &ldquo;They are as clever as any forwards,&rdquo; says Jack, &ldquo;and they make our power play go.&rdquo; &#9632;

Boston U. Defensemen Best College Tandem

One of their premier prospects on the Junior Canadiens is Larry Pleau who isn&rsquo;t a product of Quebec despite his Frenchname.Pleau, a six-one, 185-pounder, hails from Lynn, Mass., a suburb of Boston. He will be 19 in June and still has two seasons of junior hockey remaining.His coach, Scotty Bowman, regards him as the best NHL prospect among the forwards on the Junior Habs. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s not the greatest scorer but he&rsquo;s strong defensively and he still has two years to develop,&rdquo; explains Bowman. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s improved 25 percent each year he&rsquo;s been here.&rdquo;Pleau came to Montreal in a novel manner, considering his background in minor hockey in the Boston area. He was spotted at a summer hockey clinic in Worcester, Mass., by Canadiens&rsquo; centre Ralph Backstrom three years ago. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a better midget than I was,&rdquo; Backstrom advised major domo Sam Pollock.Pleau wanted to come to Canada for more advanced hockey schooling and he&rsquo;s worked under Bowman virtually since his arrival. He played under him with NDG Monarchs (the only team to defeat Toronto Marlboros on their Memorial Cup march two years ago) and moved to the Junior Habs last year.After a slow start he came to life late last year and has continued his rapid improvement this year &mdash; when he hasn&rsquo;t been idled by injuries. He missed 16 of the team&rsquo;s first 43 games due to six various injuries or sicknesses.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s having a tough year with all those ailments and because of them he&rsquo;s never really been in top shape,&rdquo; said Bowman. He still scored 14 goals in his first 21 games though.Pleau was a fragile 15-year-old at the clinic but he&rsquo;s added 35 pounds in the ensuing years and acquired additional strength. He&rsquo;s an extremely strong skater with fine hockey sense, particularly as a fore-checker and defensively.His Canadian background emanates from the fact that his father was born in Three Rivers, P, Q. He is attending a private school in Montreal, courtesy of the Canadiens, and has a sound reason to keep up his grades. If he falters in school, Uncle Sam could draft him.The injuries to Pleau, in addition to other standouts like Serge Savard and Christian Bordeleau, have hampered the Junior Canadiens throughout the season as they have hovered around fifth place.However, with all hands expected back for the playoffs the juniors could cause plenty of trouble. Bowman hardly knows what it&rsquo;s like to have his complete lineup available at one time. But if Pleau continues to improve like he did in last year&rsquo;s playoffs it could make life easier for Bowman. &#9632;
