How NHL Goalers Rate

MONTREAL, Que.,Canadiens G. M. Sammy Pollock and team captain Jean Beliveau have been honored by the Sportsmen&rsquo;s Association of Montreal.At the Association&rsquo;s 33rd annual awards dinner, held in this city recently, Pollock was named pro executive of the year while Beliveau received the Sportsmen&rsquo;s Trophy as athlete of 1965. A former Hab, Pete Morin, was named amateur executive of 1965. Morin was a forward on the famed &ldquo;razzale dazzale&rdquo; line of Morin-Heffernan and O&rsquo;Connor, which starred for Canadiens a couple of decades ago. He owns the amateur team Lachine Mardons.Pollock made a brilliant start as general manager of the Habs last year, by helping to guide the team to the Stanley Cup.Beliveau was a brilliant figure in the playoffs, last year, pacing Canadiens to a Stanly Cup with an outstanding performance. He also scored 20 goals in the regular season, marking the ninth time in 12 years that he has hit the 20-or-more goal plateau in a regular schedule.&mdash; SMITH &#9632;

To stop Hull from scoring at all costs. Reay doesn&rsquo;t particularly care for the tactics Westfall is using to check Hull.&ldquo;Westfall is constantly hooking Hull but because Bobby is so strong and good, he refuses to go down. The referees don&rsquo;t call the penalties they should. Bobby is being deprived of his freedom to move around on the ice and players are using their sticks to check him when they should be using their bodies,&rdquo; said Reay.Reay says the illegal checking of Hull is not something new.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been going on for a long time,&rdquo; said Reay &ldquo;All season long and last season, too. It&rsquo;s not only Bobby, other stars are getting the same treatment from players who can&rsquo;t keep up with them.&rdquo;&ldquo;I&rsquo;d venture to say the referees would call a penalty nine out of 10 times if Bobby would fall and I&rsquo;ve mentioned it to him. But you don&rsquo;t like to see players do that and he&rsquo;s too proud to do it anyway.&rdquo;Hull&rsquo;s two favorite &lsquo;shadows&rsquo;. Westfall and Canadiens&rsquo; Claude Provost, were compared by the Chicago star. &ldquo;Westfall is not playing hockey, he won&rsquo;t go after the puck. Provost plays the game and rarely resorts to using the stick on me.&rdquo; added Hull. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JIM PROUDFOOT</div>TORONTO. Ont.&mdash;Just a few weeks ago Terry Sawchuk was beginning to fear his carreer as a National Hockey league goaltender was ending. He&rsquo;d been bombed for 16 goals in three games as Johnny Bower&rsquo;s replacement with Leafs.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01541/2332311-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="293" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body">Punch Imlach</figcaption></div>Sawchuk openly said he was afraid he had lost his stuff. A good many observers had the same feeling.It took teammate Marcel Pronovost, observing matches as a spectator while an injured knee was healing, to point out what was wrong with Sawchuk.&ldquo;Terry, you invented the crouch for goalies and did your best goaltending out of that position.&rdquo; Pronovost said. &ldquo;Now you&rsquo;re standing upright. Why?Sawchuk had no answer for that because he wasn&rsquo;t aware he had abandoned the crouch. But when Pronovost and several other Leaf players, drew his attention to it, he changed. And there was immediate improvement. Leafs lost only one of their next five games and Sawchuk played brilliantly in all five. Johnny Bower relaxed again, knowing he could take his time about returning to active duty.Sawchuk had gone in unexpectedly Jan. 29 when Bower stretched a groin muscle reaching for a warmup shot. Leafs won that game, 6-3, but Sawchuk looked uncertain. The next night, New York Rangers, of all people, put eight past him.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-02518/2332304-1-eng-US/f0002-022.jpg" title="f0002-02" width="464" height="578"><figcaption class="caption-body">TERRY SAWCHUK&hellip; Better In Crouch</figcaption></div>&ldquo;Sawchuk will be all right,&rdquo; coach Punch Imlach said at the time, &ldquo;He hasn&rsquo;t been playing and he just isn&rsquo;t sharp. Usually, when I&rsquo;ve planned to use him, I&rsquo;ve been able to warm him a few days in advance. Then he bears down in practice and gets himself ready. This time, there couldn&rsquo;t be any warning.&ldquo;Its different when the situation is reversed. Bower works so hard in practice that he&rsquo;s always ready. But Bower is a special case. Nobody works the way he does in practice.&rdquo;Leaf&rsquo;s acquisition of Sawchuk in 1964 rated as one of the most surprising moves in hockey history. With Bower and Don Simmons on the big club and youngters Gary Smith and Jerry Cheevers on the way up, Leaf&rsquo;s seemed to be well-fixed for goalies. But when Wings dropped Sawchuk from their protected list at the &rsquo;64 draft meetings, Imlach claimed him for $30,000.The guessing was that Wings were sure nobody would take him. They left him off so they&rsquo;d have room on their roster for George Gardner, whom they&rsquo;d just grabbed.&ldquo;Sawchuk&rsquo;s a top notch goalie and I strengthened myself by getting him,&rdquo; Imlach said. &ldquo;For $30,000, I have to move.&rdquo;Sawchuk played 36 games for Leafs last season and the Vezina Trophy with Bower, as the top goaltending pair in hockey.Even so, there was speculation Leafs would leave him off their reserve list at the 1965 meetings, just to make sure they could keep Cheevers, who&rsquo;d been the standout American league goalie last winter.And everybody was waiting to see if Detroit would take him back. After all, Wings seemed to have been lucky to get through an entire season with nobody backing Roger Crozier.But Imlach surprised the hockey world by protecting Sawchuk.And so Sawchuk and Bower continued as Leafs&rsquo; goalkeeping twins and Cheevers went to Boston organization. &#9632;

Sawchuk Feared He Was Washed Up, Bounces Back To Help Lift Leafs

<div class="byline">BY DAN MOULTON</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01540/2332356-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg" title="f0003-01" width="340" height="396"></div>CHICAGO, Ill.Pat Stapleton&rsquo;s stumpy, sawed-off body was meant to belong to a hockey player. But everything else about the Black Hawks&rsquo; defenseman wasn&rsquo;t.The 5-8, 180-pound youngster from Sarnia, Ont. is extremely quick and mobile, owns a fast strong shot, and plays with confidence that borders on cockiness.Since he moved up from St. Louis of the Central League a few weeks after the season opened Pat has put all those attributes to work so effectively that he&rsquo;s begun to rival Goalie Glenn Hall and Stan Mikita as the No. 2 man behind Bobby Hull in popularity.And his future as an NHL performer seems secure.That vaguely pair-shaped body has been a handicap, though preventing him from moving into the league until he&rsquo;d reached the relatively advanced age of 26.He came into hockey under Black Hawk sponsorship but after his first season as a pro. with Sault Ste. Marie of the old Eastern Pro League, the Hawks left him off their protected list, in favor of several more promising and certainly larger, youngsters.Boston was quick to move in.&ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t too unhappy over leaving the Chicago organization,&rdquo; says Pat. &ldquo;It looked as though the Hawks had no plans for me and I knew the Bruins needed defensemen.&rdquo;The Bruins did, to be sure, but not desperately enough to keep Pat for more than a season and a half. Midway in the 1962-63 season, Pat was tossed back as too small, this time to Kingston of the Eastern league.From there, Pat was shipped to Portland of the Western league, where last season he earned all-star honors with 29 goals and 57 assists.That record prompted the Maple Leafs to insist upon Pat&rsquo;s inclusion in the deal which sent Ron Stewart to the Bruins but the Leafs were able to retain possession of him for only 24 hours.They gambled and left him off their protected list during the draft session held the day after the deal was made, and Hawk Manager Tommy Ivan promptly snapped him up.&ldquo;We had been trying to get Pat back ever since we lost him,&rdquo; says Ivan. &ldquo;And we almost had him a couple of times only to have the deal fall through at the last minute.&rdquo;Although Pat regarded it as a break to get away from the Hawks, he says he was happy when he returned to the shelter of the teepee.&ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t mind coming back at all,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;In the first place, I&rsquo;d played with about 80 per cent of the guys on the team either in the Soo or with St. Catharines. And second, I really thought I&rsquo;d get a chance to play.&ldquo;All during my career guys have been telling me what a great hockey player I&rsquo;d be if I were a codpie of inches taller. I never thought that, though. I figured I could make it despite my size and all I wanted was a chance to prove it.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-02433/2332349-1-eng-US/f0003-022.jpg" title="f0003-02" width="1632" height="1109"><figcaption class="caption-body">One of the big reasons PAT STAPLETON (12) has stayed up with the Hawks since his minor league recall early in the season, is his ability to carry out the proper defensive plays in the Chicago end of the rink. The Hawks use Stapleton on the power play as well.</figcaption><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-03285/2332342-1-eng-US/f0003-032.jpg" title="f0003-03" width="1058" height="1469"><figcaption class="caption-body">PAT STAPLETON &hellip; Plays With Confidence</figcaption></div>For a while, at the start of this season, it looked as though that chance would never come.At the end of the Hawks&rsquo; training session in Chicago Stadium, Pat was informed that he&rsquo;d been assigned to St. Louis.&ldquo;I was a little disappointed, of course, but I wasn&rsquo;t too upset,&rdquo; says Pat.&ldquo;I&rsquo;d heard that the Central League was good and I was told I&rsquo;d like St. Louis.&rdquo;Things didn&rsquo;t work out, however, and after a few weeks with the Braves, Pat was considering seeking some other means of employment.&ldquo;I just couldn&rsquo;t get adjusted,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;Here I was, 26, and with a wife and four kids (No. 5 is expected in April) playing on a team made up mostly of youngsters.&ldquo;And to top it off, I couldn&rsquo;t find a place for my family. After about three weeks, I began to think that if I couldn&rsquo;t get back to the Western league, preferably with Portland, where I could get an off-season job and settle down, I&rsquo;d retire.&rdquo;Pat never got the chance to express his feeling to Ivan, however. Veteran Defenseman Elmer Vasko suffered a broken toe about a month into the season and Pat was brought up to replace him.Actually, it was a straight re call but Stapleton was informed of this.&ldquo;I was told only to bring enough to last three days,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;In fact, I just got the last of my stuff from St. Louis a couple of days ago.&rdquo;He&rsquo;s probably a better hockey player now, mechanically, at least, than he was when he failed with the Bruins. But he insists he&rsquo;s not playing differently.&ldquo;The biggest problem with the Bruins was that they had me playing the right side. I just can&rsquo;t do it. Some guys can work both ways but the adjustment is too much for me.&ldquo;The Hawks had me playing on the right side during training camp this year, too, and, I think that hurt my chances of staying with the team.&rdquo;Nothing Pat has done since then has hurt his chances, though.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s been an awfully handy guy,&rdquo; said Coach Billy Reay, who handled Pat for the first time during his single season at Sault Ste. Marie.&ldquo;He has great anticipation and tremendous moves for a defenseman. He&rsquo;ll give you fits once in a while when he starts to move toward the goal but he recovers quickly.&rdquo;Pat also is on the way to establishing himself as the club wit. After a recent game in which Pat actually scored a goal that was credited to Detroit&rsquo;s Gordie Howe, Reay questioned Pat about the play.&ldquo;Did you shoot that puck into our net&rdquo;, asked Billy. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m afraid so,&rdquo; replied Stapleton. &ldquo;You know, coach, when I&rsquo;m in that close I&rsquo;m really deadly.&rdquo; &#9632;

Diminutive Hawk Makes It Big

Each and every one is a Canadian. But a decade from now, don&rsquo;t be surprised if there are a dozen Americans.That&rsquo;s because a new program is being launched to harvest pro hockey players from the potentially-rich shinny crops in Metropolitan New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.The Rangers and Bruins, in conjunction with new Pitt and Philly franchise holders, will ice an Eastern Junior B League, for native-born players ranging in age from 16 to 20.&ldquo;Our aim is to develop NHL players from our own area without relying exclusively on Canadians,&rdquo; says Ranger GM-coach Emile Francis. &ldquo;We believe there are plenty of such youths available.&rdquo;Hockey has enjoyed a beanstalk growth at suburban rinks such as West New York, N.J., Roosevelt Field in Garden City and South Mountain Arena in South Orange, N.J. Last Fall two graduates of the West New York League successfully auditioned for the Rangers&rsquo; Junior B farm at Burlington, Ont.But both lads returned to New York early in the season because of difficulties adjusting to the Canadian surroundings. If the team had been located in New York it is believed both would have continued playing.&ldquo;What the New York boy needs most of all is proper coaching and plenty of ice time,&rdquo; says Francis.Ice will be made available at the Garden and various rinks throughout the Met Area such as Skateland in New Hyde Park, where the Rangers hold midweek workouts.So far, not a single New Yorker has made it to the NHL as a player although Bill Chadwick, a graduate of Jamaica High School, became one of the league&rsquo;s finest referees and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. &#9632;

New U.S. Eastern Junior Hockey League To Turn Out American-born Kids For NHL

NEW YORK, N.Y. &mdash;The biggest mistake the Boston Bruins made all season was moving into fifth place ahead of the Rangers on Feb. 10. Being in the cellar for the first time in two seasons so stirred the Blueshirts&rsquo; adrenalin, they skated on Garden ice two days later like a pack of dragons.When the fire and fury had subsided New York was back in fifth place, the result of a 9-2 spanking of the Bruins before 15,925 thoroughly flabbergasted viewers.How could anybody believe their eyes? Here were the Bruins, winners of three straight against the dazed Rangers, losers of five in a row and making like they&rsquo;d never win again.&ldquo;Everything bounced right for us,&rdquo; said an exuberant Ranger GM-coach Emile Francis, explaining the biggest winning margin of the year.The best bouncers of all were provided by Jean Ratelle and captain Bob Nevin, each of whom scored two goals. Next best were Reg Fleming and Vic Hadfield who each racked up a goal and three assists and, finally there was newcomer Bob Plager who bounced Bruins from Eighth to Ninth Ave. ends of the rinks without discrimination.&ldquo;He plays his position well,&rdquo; enthuses Francis over the new bouncer.Francis couldn&rsquo;t find a lemon in his Garden all afternoon. The Blues began blooming at 2:39 of the first period when Nevin zoomed a shot past goalie Ed Johnston. Less than a minute later Hadfield was standing in front of the net, out came the puck and in it went &mdash; at 3.32.The Ranger attack relentlessly poured shots at the Boston net and, at 2:24 of the second period, Ratelie accepted Jim Neilson&rsquo;s pass in front of the B&rsquo;s goal and flipped the puck home.A certain amount of friction had been building up all this time and seconds after Ratelie&rsquo;s goal, ex-Bruin Reg Fleming and Ed Westfall produced sparks with a collision at center ice. Fists flew freely until Fleming lifted Westfall&rsquo;s jersey over his head and wrestled the Bruin to the ice for the decision.When Fleming emerged from the penalty box, he inflicted more injury on the Bruins, this time with a crisp shot from 35-feet that beat Johnston cleanly. Nevin followed that with his second goal at 13:40.Down 0-5 when the third period opened, Bruin coach Milt Schmidt replaced Johnston with rookie goalie Bernie Parent but that was like throwing Parent to the dragons as the fans lustily chanted &ldquo;We Want More.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-02562/2332418-1-eng-US/f0004-022.jpg" title="f0004-02" width="516" height="640"><figcaption class="caption-body">BOB NEVIN &hellip; Led The Way</figcaption></div>Within 38 seconds Bill Hicke had scored for the Blues. At 5:30 it was Earl Ingarfield; at 7:51 Garry Peters and at 9:03 Ratelie. Already the Rangers had scored more goals than in any game this season, so now their objective was to record their first shutout of the year, a fine gift for the SRO crowd.But, maybe that was asking too much. With less than nine minutes remaining, the Ranger defense had become knot-tight and was forcing the Bruins to shoot from further and further out.One of those shots was tossed by Pit Martin as he crossed the blue line on the left side. It was a relatively easy shot but goalie Cesare Maniago fumbled the puck and it trickled past him at 10:59.Ron Stewart scored a second goal for Boston at 11:35 but by this time everybody appeared too tired to score anymore, so it ended 9-2, the Rangers wildest margin of the season.&mdash;FISCHLER &#9632;

Bruins Pay Price For Irritating Rangers

Que.&mdash;The coach of the Montrea1 Canadiens has made it clear that there&rsquo;s room for improvement in the play of his favourite hockey team.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-01561/2332449-1-eng-US/f0005-012.jpg" title="f0005-01" width="280" height="405"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gilles Tremblay</figcaption></div>As Habs prepared for the stretch drive that will determine their place in the standings, this season, Blake expressed disappointment at the overall team effort, to date. Speaking from his office in the executive wing of the Forum, Toe declared: &ldquo;I&rsquo;d have to say that I&rsquo;m satisified with the biggest percentage of our players over the length of this season. Our team can play better than they have so far. What we need is one hundred percent effort from everybody, if we&rsquo;re going to beat out the competition for a league title this year.&rdquo;The Habs had just finished a lengthy road trip with a 3-1 loss to Toronto when Blake made his assessment of the situation. They were four points out of first place, but with two games in hand on the league leading Chicago Black Hawks. Blake had already done some experimenting in a move to get three producing lines on the team, however. He switched centers on two of his lines, putting Beliveau between Provost and Gilles Tremblay and using Richard at a pivot for Rousseau and Duff. Said Toe: &ldquo;I&rsquo;m fairly happy with that move. I think it helped the team. It certainly helped Beliveau quite a bit, because it started him producing again. Of course, that move was made just at a time when Gilles Tremblay was coming into his own, so that&rsquo;s been a factor as well.&rdquo;What about Henri Richard and his new wingmen?&ldquo;Well, at the moment,&rdquo; said Toe, &ldquo;Henri isn&rsquo;t playing as well as he was earlier in the season. There was one stretch awhile ago &hellip; about eight games, or so &hellip; where Henri was a star in every single contest. He&rsquo;s not playing as well as he did then, though I&rsquo;m not saying he&rsquo;s playing badly.&ldquo;As for Rousseau, his production had started to go down a bit after a fine first half. So, I switched the centremen in the hope that it&rsquo;d benefit himself as well. If he starts playing like he did in the latter stages of last season, and the play-offs, there&rsquo;ll be no problem there. With Duff, it&rsquo;s a matter of playing up to his potential. He hadn&rsquo;t been doing it and it seems to be a case of having to drive him all the time.&rdquo;According to coach Blake, the team&rsquo;s remaining unit &hellip; Backstrom, Larose and Ferguson &hellip; could also stand some improvement. They were, by far, the lowest scoring trio on Canadiens as the club headed into it&rsquo;s 50th game. Among them, they&rsquo;d accounted for only 67 scoring points since the start of the season. This included 32 goals and 35 assists. In fairness, it must be stated that each member of the trio had been sidelined by injuries at various times and had not played a full slate of games. Nevertheless. their production was well below par and Blake didn&rsquo;t hesitate to express disappointment in the three of them.Blake, however, did not end his assessment of things on a negative note.Said he : If we get the effort I expect from this team, then we&rsquo;re going to do allright. Up to now, it&rsquo;s been a question of a few guys carrying the mail for us, but in a tight race that isn&rsquo;t enough. Everybody&rsquo;s got to put out, not just a few.&ldquo;However,&rdquo; continued the coach,, &ldquo;if all our guys start moving the way I know they can. then we&rsquo;ll do pretty good. I think we have a good chance of finishing first this season, provided everybody gets with it, now.&rdquo; &#9632;

Mass.Whenever the art of bodychecking works its way into a hockey conversation the name of Leo Boivin, now of the Detroit Red Wings, is bound to be mentioned.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0007-01582/2332656-1-eng-US/f0007-012.jpg" title="f0007-01" width="237" height="387"><figcaption class="caption-body">Leo Boivin</figcaption></div>Pound for pound today, nobody hits any harder in the National Hockey League. And nobody does it any cleaner or puts more lift into it than the former defenseman and captain of the Boston Bruins.Typical of the bone-rattling check that is Boivin at his best was one which took the starch out of the Montreal Canadiens on their last visit to Boston.The Bruins had a 2-0 lead in the third period, but the Habs were pressing. J. C. Tremblay intercepted a pass and broke in over the Boston blue line with only Boivin back. The Canadian bore down on the Bruins&rsquo; net, wound up a flying slap-shot, but never got it off the pad. Rather, it was Tremblay, himself, who went into orbit, did a complete somersault four-five feet, in the air, and came down with a sickening splat.Leo Joseph (Billy) Boivin had struck again &mdash; with the split-second timing and practiced execution of a true artist.Roused by the stumpy defenseman&rsquo;s masterful check and the fans&rsquo; roisterous response, the fired-up Bruins had the lift they needed and roared on to the final buzzer, preserving Ed Johnston&rsquo;s first shutout of season.It was Boivin&rsquo;s second cartwheel job in as many games (a few days earlier he had catapulted Detroit&rsquo;s Gary Bergman toward the second balcony) and it was good to see the 15-year journeyman get the fans off his back. Boisterous critics had been giving it to Billy hot and heavy at Boston Garden when he got away to a slow start this season. Boivin&rsquo;s participation in the four player trade with Detroit was no doubt helped along by his sudden impopularity with Boston fans.&ldquo;Boivin&rsquo;s at the age now when it takes a little longer to get the timing down,&rdquo; pointed out Milt Schmidt, the Bruins&rsquo; coach. &ldquo;That was his trouble at the first of the season. He&rsquo;d miss a check or get caught out of position and the fans would start roasting him.The Bruins&rsquo; coach, however, maintains that Leo is not the body-checker everyone thinks he is &mdash; at least not in the strictest sense of the word.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s not the shoulder-to-shoulder checker we&rsquo;ve come to know in the NHL,&rdquo; Schmidt declares. &ldquo;Boivin does his best checking with his hip. He gets his rear-end into an opponent and raises him off his skates.&rdquo;&ldquo;That&rsquo;s right,&rdquo; Billy replied in his gentle, unassuming, off-ice manner. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s all timing. I try to put my hip right along his knees. It&rsquo;s easy for me &lsquo;cause I don&rsquo;t skate standing up like most defensemen. I skate bent over. Anyway,&rdquo; he laughed, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m built low to the ground (he&rsquo;s 5ft. 7in., a solid 187 pounds).&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve sent a lot of guys off,&rdquo; said the little man proudly. &ldquo;But they always come back and say I&rsquo;ve hit them clean, never dirty.&rdquo; &#9632;

But the Bruins&rsquo; Ed Johnston saved a 4-4 tie with Toronto recently barehanded! Sans both stick and glove.The spectacular stop came In the closing minute as the Bruins were holding off a bold Leafs&rsquo; bid to win the game.&ldquo;I lost my stick and glove just a few seconds before,&rdquo; the Boston goalie explained.Seconds later the puck came flying at Johnston from 15 feet out and it looked like the game &mdash; winning goal coming up.&ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t have time to think. I just stuck up my barehand and got a piece of the puck. It bounced up in the air and I punched it into the corner.&rdquo;After the game, Johnston proudly nursed a large red welt on the inside of his right wrist. But down the hall a bitter Frank Mahovlich grumbled in disbelief.&ldquo;Barehanded,&rdquo; he growled. &ldquo;How does a guy make a save barehanded. I never saw it before.&rdquo;Neither, apparently, had anyone else. &#9632;

MONTREAL, Que.The National Hockey League has announced the appointment of Brian F. O&rsquo;Neill of Montreal as administration manager.In making the announcement, NHL President Clarence Campbell said O&rsquo;Neill&rsquo;s duties would include all areas of administration of NHL Headquarters.&ldquo;He will, in effect, be my understudy and will learn all phases of the operation of Headquarters,&rdquo; Campbell said.O&rsquo;Neill, a 37-year-old native of Montreal, assumes his position with the NHL April 1. He has been business manager of Financial Times of Canada &mdash; a national business weekly controlled by the Southam Newspaper group &mdash; since 1962. <div class="byline">BY STAN FISCHLER</div>NEW YORK, N.Y. &mdash;February is the month of the big trade for the Rangers and the question now is who &mdash; if any &mdash; of the present Blue stars will be bartered to strengthen the staggering New Yorkers.Two years ago In February Ranger fans were shocked by the deal that sent Andy Bathgate to the Maple Leafs. Last year at this time, Camille Henry was dealt to Chicago.And in 1966?Judging by past performances, the Blues will have to select one of their most popular, as well as most capable, players; otherwise the opposition won&rsquo;t talk trade.Of the forwards, Vic Hadfield is the man most often sought by rival managers. But the Blues would be reluctant to part with him because of his relative youth, size and checking ability.On defense, Jim Neilson has been the apple of Toronto&rsquo;s eye from time to time, but again New York has guarded the erratic big boy for the same reasons they&rsquo;ve kept Hadfield.More likely to be bartered by the Ranger management would be an older player whose future a limited to a season or two. The Blues are committed to a policy of youth and size.Under these conditions, Don Marshall and Phil Goyette would be tradeable since both are among the elder Blues and are of slight build. Earl Ingarfield is larger but in the older category and also might be dealt.The Rangers&rsquo; dilemma is that they need quantity as well as quality. Mich. &mdash;The Red Wings&rsquo; grand design on a second straight National Hockey League cham pionship has begun to crack.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01615/2332901-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="273" height="425"><figcaption class="caption-body">Doug Barkley</figcaption></div>The crack is at the blue line where Detroit has lost All-Star defenseman Doug Barkley, certainly for the remainder of this season and the playoffs, and possibly for good, and where Warren Godfrey&rsquo;s knee hasn&rsquo;t responded to surgery.A decision on the 29-year-old Barkley&rsquo;s return to the game in which he was just attaining peak performance, will be made after he recovers from surgery for a detached retina.He was expected to regain perfect or near-perfect vision but once a person suffers a detached retina, chances of recurrence are high, with just a severe bump needed and hockey is a game of severe bumps.Barkley was injured late in the second period of a Jan. 30 game with Chicago. Doug Mohns trying to lift Barkley&rsquo;s stick near the blue line, missed Barkley&rsquo;s stick completely. Instead, the tip of Mohn&rsquo;s stick pierced Barkley&rsquo;s right eye.Barkley, who took command as Detroit&rsquo;s best defenseman this season, is irreplaceable. He was the Wings&rsquo; best hitter and their best shooting rearguard as well.He teamed perfectly with rookie Bert Marshall as one defense pair.Then Warren Godfrey&rsquo;s knee failed following surgery and Abel went to the farms, looking for suitable replacements.The only thing is, it&rsquo;s rather late for experimenting and what the Wings need is an experienced rearguard who can stand up to the NHL pace.Abel began talking trade again with Boston&rsquo;s Leo Boivin the likely target.But in any negotiating with Boston or New York, those clubs wanted a young player and chances were that the defenseman the Wings would receive would have a few years on him. The Bruins probably would be happy to make a Parker MacDonald for Pit Martin type trade again.To try to balance the blue line losses, the Wings will need increased scoring the rest of the season and they&rsquo;ve had some dificulties there, too.Andy Bathgate is the most celebrated. Andy, possessor of the NHL&rsquo;s longest scoring streak &mdash; 10 games &mdash; figures he&rsquo;s got the longest dry spell, too. It passed two dozen games in mid-February and it wasn&rsquo;t that Bathgate wasn&rsquo;t trying.Regarded a cinch 30-goal man this season by Abel, Bathgate looked like a 20-goaler at least at mid-season but the puck wouldn&rsquo;t go in. There were a half dozen post shots, one that landed on top of the net, two that went in and were disallowed, one for offside and on the other Andy kicked it in &hellip; just no way he could win.Still Abel, by patching and juggling, kept the Wings in contention for first place.The question is, how much longer can he work miracles?ICE CHIPS: Even the Wings&rsquo; front office staff can&rsquo;t avoid injury &hellip; Margie Williams, editor of the Wing program, was standing back in an exitway when Ted Lindsay was out for a morning skate.Lindsay flipped a puck over the glass and Miss Williams froze &hellip; and needed five stitches to close the cut on her jaw.Doctors were optimistic about Barkley&rsquo;s recovery &mdash; his vision in his right eye tested at 20/40 and then the hemorrhaging in the eye, which had blocked their view, began to clear and they got the first hint that his retina might be detached.The retina is membrane which receives the image formed by the lens. In Barkley&rsquo;s case, the membrane was detached on the side of his eye closest to his nose, in the area where the vision overlaps with his left eye.A detachment in the center of the field of vision or on the opposite side would affect the vision much more and is more serious.Because of the delicacy of the operation, the team of doctors working on Barkley in Detroit decided to send him to an eyesurgery hospital. &#9632;

Although he ranks as one of the National Hockey League&rsquo;s newest 200-goal scorers, productive days like the ones enjoyed by Dick Duff last weekend, have been few and far between for the swift skating left winger of the Canadiens.Duff hit the jackpot scoring five times in two games as the Canadiens rode to victory over the Black Hawks with Duff registering his first NHL &lsquo;hat trick&rsquo; in eight years, and again over Rangers 5-3 with Duff providing two more. The hard-working Duff contributed the winning goal in both games.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-03456/2332963-1-eng-US/f0010-032.jpg" title="f0010-03" width="281" height="432"><figcaption class="caption-body">Dick Duff</figcaption></div>Of the two days, Duff said he had a preference for the win over the Black Hawks. &ldquo;It was great, just great to score three in an important game like that. You get three and you beat the Black Hawks and the other two big teams (Detroit and Toronto) lose, and you feel pretty good about it all,&rdquo; commented Duff, who recently picked up goal No. 200 after a long wait.Canadiens&rsquo; coach Toe Blake did a little line shuffling recently and one of his moves was to insert Duff at left wing with Henri Richard and Bobby Rousseau. The switch paid big dividends last weekend as Duff and his linemates figured in seven of the 10 Montreal goals, of which Duff personally netted five.Duff&rsquo;s outburst was one of the most prolific turned in this season by an NHL player and El Producto is pleased to salute the Montreal left winger as the player-of-the-week in the National League. &#9632;

Y.The Boomer is booming again, and as a result, the Buffalo Bisons are winning again.Alain (Boom Boom) Caron is almost certain to go down as one of the top goal-getters in the history of the game.Although the Bisons are mired in last place in the American Hockey League&rsquo;s Western Division, Caron was battling Rochester&rsquo;s Dick Gamble for the scoring lead and had 32 at this writing. The Bisons had totaled only 138 goals in their first 50 games.Caron scored 6 of 26 goals the club collected in a recent six-game run. Earlier, he went nine games without a goal &mdash; one of the longest droughts of his career &mdash; after opening with a fast start. The Boomer scored in 9 of the first 10 road games.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-01583/2333216-1-eng-US/f0012-012.jpg" title="f0012-01" width="291" height="434"><figcaption class="caption-body">Alain Caron</figcaption></div>A high percentage of his goals come off a blazing slap shot. There may be some who can slap them as hard, perhaps Bobby Hull, or Jean Beliveau or Frank Mahovlich or Gordie Howe, but none who slap them harder.Recently, Caron has been scoring consistently on nifty passing plays with his linemates, Billy Carter and Mel Pearson. And the Boomer, never noted as a playmaker, has been making some fine plays himself.&ldquo;The Boomer has to score for us, or we&rsquo;re in trouble,&rdquo; says Phil Watson, the Buffalo coach. &ldquo;I was concerned when he hit that slump, but I was confident he would come out of it.&ldquo;Some guys have the knack of scoring goals, and Boomer is one of them. I.Ross Brooks has proven again that he&rsquo;s a valuable asset to the Rhode Island Reds !The 28-year-old standby netminder of the Roosters always seems to do the job when he&rsquo;s called upon. That&rsquo;s the way it&rsquo;s been through his 3-year tenure with the Reds.The likable Torontonian made his most recent assignment a memorable one for coach Ivan Irwin, who inserted Brooks in place of the tiring Marcel Paille over the weekend of Feb. 12-13.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-01577/2333414-1-eng-US/f0013-012.jpg" title="f0013-01" width="292" height="435"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ross Brooks</figcaption></div>In the middle of a long string of adversity, and at his wits end in making any further changes, coach Irwin decided to give the puck-peppered Paille a well deserved rest, hoping, too, that the fiery Brooks could help pick up the team&rsquo;s play.After playing well in a losing cause at Pittsburgh on Feb. 12th, Brooks returned home to pace the Roosters to a heartening 6-3 victory over San Francisco on Sunday night, thus putting an end to the Reds&rsquo; woes at the moment and instilling new hope for a playoff drive in the American Hockey League&rsquo;s Eastern Division.&ldquo;Ross did exactly what I had hoped he would,&rdquo; Irwin said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a great competitor and fights you all the way.&ldquo;Marcel had been playing well, but it&rsquo;s a long season and he had worked in 41 of 45 games &lsquo;till then, and was showing signs of tiring.&rdquo;Brooks&rsquo; performance against San Francisco was superb. Trailing the fast-skating Seals, 3-2, after two periods, Brooks saved the game early in the third with a series of timely stops, after which the game reversed pattern as the Reds turned around and scored four rapid goals to take the decision.&ldquo;Ross kept us in there all the way,&rdquo; Irwin remarked after.&ldquo;His fiery example seemed to ignite the rest of the team, and when it did, we were on our way!&rdquo;Brooks, who stands 5-8 and weighs 160 pounds, came up with one of the finest goaltending stints of the season on Auditorium ice. He finished the game with 38 saves, many of them of the variety that could be called sensational.As the season goes into its final six weeks of competition it may be that Brooks now will get the call to active duty more regularly.&ldquo;I won&rsquo;t ever be afraid to use Ross,&rdquo; Orwin has said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a capable fellow, and when you give him a job, he does it &hellip; and well!&rdquo; &#9632;

Reds Ross Brooks Proving Top Standby Netminder Around AHL

His Hershey Bears hit a six game losing skein in late Janu ary, dropping into third place for a brief time in the Eastern Division race.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-02534/2333445-1-eng-US/f0013-022.jpg" title="f0013-02" width="282" height="433"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bruce Draper</figcaption></div>Mathers&rsquo; recipe for the problem: Shake well and come up with a new production line.The veteran trio of center Mike Nykoluk and wingers Myron Stankiewicz and Bruce Cline emerged as the new potent striking force, delivering 11 goals and setting up 16 others to pace the club to five straight wins. Two markers were game winners.Practically overnight the Bears were back in second place with a comfortable lead over the Springfield Indians.The victory stretch came at an opportune time as on Feb. 13 the Bears launched a seven game road stand with a 4-4 overtime tie against the Baltimore Clippers. Hershey, giving way to the Ice Capades, won&rsquo;t return home until Mar. 5.During the prolonged January slump Mathers gave goalie Claude Dufour a three game rest and it paid off.Once the veteran netminder returned to the cage he came up with one sensational performance after another, allowing only ten goals for a spectacular 1.66 average through 370 minutes of action.&ldquo;I felt Claude needed a rest,&rdquo; said Mathers. &ldquo;He didn&rsquo;t seem sharp for awhile, but after he came back he was moving like a cat, cutting angles and coming up with the big save, especially on screen shots.&rdquo;Cline&rsquo;s play has been excellent in the last 24 games with the little 33-year old winger popping in 14 goals to jack his career total to 282. Seven more and he&rsquo;ll become the eighth top goal sniper of all time in the circuit.Injuries continue to plague the club. Latest to enter the Polyclinic in nearby Harrisburg Hospital is Bruce Draper, the clever skating 25-year-old winger. He underwent surgery for a gland condition and will be on the shelf for an undetermined time.Draper&rsquo;s loss will be keenly felt. The quiet easy-going forward was off and running to one of his finest pro seasons when struck by the ailment. In 41 games, Draper had 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points, third best mark on the club.&ldquo;Bruce was really playing great,&rdquo; said Mathers. &ldquo;I shifted him to a wing spot for awhile and he caught a hot hand to help us tremendously. When I moved him back to center, he still kept nailing the big goals. He had seven in January and on Feb. 9 in a key game against Cleveland, he banged in two big ones.&rdquo;For Nykoluk, the guy who always gives 110 per cent, he finally notched his 100th career goal, the tally coming in Cleveland Feb. 11. He opened the season with 92 for nine AHL seasons.Since Gary Dornhoefer returned from Boston on Jan. 25 the rangy forward has notched five goals. His solid checking has giving the club a big lift. &#9632;

Y.If Jimmy Hoffa ever organizes hockey players, nobody really could blame the Rochester Americans&rsquo; Duane Rupp for asking the union boss to bargain for an overtime clause.For the fourth straight season, Rupp is headed for competition in more than the 72 games for which the American Hockey League schedule calls.Rupp, who has been the steadiest Amerk defenseman all season and has overshadowed even the great Al Arbour, played in all 47 Rochester games before he was recalled Feb. 9 by Toronto. He was slated to play four games for the Leafs before being returned to Rochester. The Amerks, meanwhile, had gone to the post only twice, so, barring injury, the 27-year-old Rupp will wind up playing 74 games this season !But extra work has been commonplaces for Duane. He played 71 games for Baltimore and two for New York in 1962-63, a total of 76 (61 for Baltimore and 15 for the Amerks) in &rsquo;63-&rsquo;64 and 71 for Rochester and two for Toronto last season.The word durable just doesn&rsquo;t do justice to Duane Rupp. At the moment he&rsquo;s eight games over a perfect attendance record!General manager-coach Joe Crozier was able to locate a pretty good replacement while Rupp was with Toronto. Marc Reaume, the AHL&rsquo;s Eddie Shore Plaque winner as the outstanding defenseman while with Hershey in 1962-63, was called up from Tulsa for a couple of games.When Reaume pulled on a Rochester sweater Sunday, Feb. 13, it gave the Amerks the distinction of having had five of the seven Eddie Shore Plaque winners in their line up at one time or another.Steve Kraftcheck won the first award while with Rochester in 1958-59, Larry Hillman was the &rsquo;59-60 winner while with Providence, Kent Douglas copped it in 1961-62 while with Springfield, Reaume was the &rsquo;62-63 recipient while with Hershey and Amerk Al Arbour won it last year. Only Bob McCord and Teddy Harris have not played for the Americans.ICICLES &mdash; Dick Gamble had quite a day Feb. 13. His wife gave birth to an 11-pound, 5-ounce boy and that night Dick scored his 30th and 31st goals of the season to break an AHL record. It marked the ninth season in which Dick has netted 30 or more goals. Gamble held the old mark of eight seasons &hellip; Defenseman Don Cherry has passed retired Ivan Irwin, now the Providence coach, and moved into sixth place on the AHL&rsquo;s list of alltime leaders in penalty minutes. Cherry has been handed 872 minutes thus far in his AHL career. &#9632;

Amerk Duane Rupp To Again Exceed 72-Game Limit

Pa. &mdash;Pittsburgh Hornet General Manager Baz Bastien can&rsquo;t be blamed if he is wondering what it takes to win the Western Division championship. Bastien&rsquo;s Hornets have spent the entire season chasing the Rochester Americans, the defending Calder Cup champions.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-06326/2333569-1-eng-US/f0013-062.jpg" title="f0013-06" width="281" height="427"><figcaption class="caption-body">Eddie Bush</figcaption></div>At their present rate, the ambitious Hornets will post their best seasonal record since re-entering the AHL for the 1961-62 campaign. Even better than the 1963-64 team which won the division championship on the last day of the regular season.They edged Rochester by one point. Cleveland was just four points behind.Despite their fine success this season, progress has been very slow in the Hornets attempt to overtake the pace-setting Americans. Each time they get hot, Rochester manages to keep the pesky Wasps at a safe breathing distance.However, Pittsburgh&rsquo;s confident coach, Eddie Bush, and Bastien haven&rsquo;t given up on their chances of catching the Amerks. With almost a third of the schedule remaining, they both have been around too long and have see too much happen to throw in the sponge.&ldquo;There&rsquo;s still plenty of time to catch them,&rdquo; Bastien declared. &ldquo;Recently they have shown signs of faltering,&rdquo; he added.&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t forget they led us by 16 points at one time,&rdquo; Bush pitched in. &#9632;

Hornets Hot Ice Record Not Enough

<div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div>Before you say SCOTCH say &ldquo;DEWAR&rsquo;S&rdquo; it never variesBefore you say SCOTCH say &ldquo;DEWAR&rsquo;S&rdquo; it never variesLOS ANGELES, Calif. &mdash;Now that Willie O&rsquo;Ree is lending a hand to the old pros, Norm Johnson and Leo LaBine, who have been doing their best all season, the Los Angeles Blades may give their followers some long-overdue good hockey in the remaining third of the Western League season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-08106/2333600-1-eng-US/f0014-082.jpg" title="f0014-08" width="299" height="439"><figcaption class="caption-body">Buddy Boone</figcaption></div>O&rsquo;Ree won &ldquo;player of the week&rdquo; honors in the WHL as he fired in five goals and set up four more goals for nine points during a road swing in which the Blades flashed their best form of the season in knocking off the league&rsquo;s third, second and first-place teams in order.The Blades won in Vancouver 9-2, lost in Seattle 8-1, then won in Victoria 5-3 and Portland 3-1. O&rsquo;Ree had a six-pointer in the first win, scoring twice and assisting on four goals, scored the only goal in the defeat, then slammed in the tie-breaking game-winners in the last two triumphs. Winning three of four on the road gave the Blades five wins in their last six games.The 30-year-old winger, who closed with a rush to win the WHL goal-scoring honors with 38 last season, was slowed first by a lingering groin injury, then by the flu this season. Additionally, he was distressed by reports that he might be traded to Portland for Tommy McVie. &ldquo;Trade talk always upsets players,&rdquo; coach Lynn Patrick points out.However, with the coming of February, O&rsquo;Ree began to regain his better form. When he is at his best, he is flying so fast he is getting more scoring opportunities than anyone in the league. This makes him a sparkplug to his teammates, a pest to the opposition, and a joy to fans everywhere. He is one of the few really colorful players in the circuit.Now with 24 goals in 43 games played, 11 in his last 10 games at least one goal in each of six straight games and at least one point in each of nine straight games, he is giving the Blades a big boost. And statistics show he is the second most accurate shooter in the entire league.O&rsquo;Ree has been going great since Patrick placed him on a line with pivot Warren Hynes and newcomer Jimmy Baird. Hynes, who scored three times against Vancouver and twice against Victoria, has come to life, too. Baird has seven goals in his first 11 games. The line has 20 goals.Buddy Boone, who scored the first goals in both the back-to-back weekend wins in Portland and Victoria, has also begun to flash his old sharpshooting form. Boone put Victoria on the defensive with a score 16 seconds after the opening face-off.Meanwhile, Johnson and LaBine continue to plug away. Johnson hasn&rsquo;t shot as well as usual this season, but he has been making beautiful plays as usual. The 33-year-old pivot is such an effortless player he rarery winds up with individual honors, but he&rsquo;s one of the best and is once again in the running for the scoring title he has yet to win in the WHL.Along with his 16 goals, Normie is second in assists with 47 tied for third in points with 63. Billy McNeill of Vancouver leads with 71 points, Cliff Schmautz of Portland with 32 goals and Guyle Fielder of Seattle with 49 assists.LaBine, the tough, tricky winger has 28 goals and 22 assists. The 34-year-old Lion still snarls.Another old pro and former Boston Bruin teammate of O&rsquo;Ree, Johnson and LaBine. Jerry Top pazzini moved back from a wing to take up a defensive post when the Blades came up short-handed and performed heroically on the jaunt. Part of the reason the Blades were short-handed was the six-game suspension of Howie Young. However, he wasn&rsquo;t missed. In fact, his absence helped the Blades&rsquo; chances and hurt the oppositions. Even as his suspension expired, the Blades were reluctant to put him back to work.Defensively young Jack Norris helped get the Blades off on their spree, but 39-year-old Marcel Pelletier was back in goal at the end. Norris slumped in the 8-1 loss in Seattle. Then Pelletier saved the club, recording 47 saves to 29 for Al Millar of Victoria and 33 saves to 22 for Dave Kelly of Portland.&ldquo;Norris let in four or five goals in Seattle I could have stopped. I guess we&rsquo;ll just write it off as a bad game.&rdquo; said Patrick. He could have nothing but good to say for Pelletier, who said of himself, &ldquo;Maybe this new expansion will give me a new career, eh?&rdquo;It is ironic that the Blade surge coincided with the news that owner Dan Reeves and his associates had lost their bid for the L.A. franchise in the new expansion division of the NHL. &#9632;

<div class="byline">By Bill Libby</div><h2>Jack Cooke Has His Day</h2>IN LOS ANGELES, the Coliseum Commission, which is made up of an ever changing board of politicians, operates both the 30-year-old outdoor Coliseum and the nextdoor seven-year-old indoor Sports Arena. When Jack Kent Cooke purchased the basketball Lakers from Bob Short for $5.175,000. he requested an extension of his lease in the Sports Arena from two to ten years. Even though he pointed out Dan Reeves had been granted a ten-year lease in the Coliseum for his football Rams, the commissioners said no. The Commission had insisted Short put up $50,000 each year to guarantee the purchase of talent. Cooke considered this clause an insult and asked that it be dropped. The commissioners said no, unless he was willing to up his nightly rent from $4,000 to $5,000. The Commission had backed Reeves&rsquo; Blades, their Sports Arena tenant, for the National Hockey League expansion franchise. When Cooke asked them to say publicly they would welcome his group if he got the franchise, the commissioners said no.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-01549/2333798-1-eng-US/f0015-012.jpg" title="f0015-01" width="292" height="440"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jack Cooke</figcaption></div>One of the commissioners promised Cooke that if he would sign the two-year-contract, he would call him up and work to renegotiate the terms to Cooke&rsquo;s liking. He never called &hellip; until the day Cooke got the NHL franchise and announced he was going to put his Lakers and new hockey team into a new $6,000,000, 16,000-seat arena in the Fall of 1967.The Sports Arena was built with a public bond issue of $7,800,000. With approximately 15 years of full tenancy required before the remaining $6,300,000 could be paid off, the defection of Cooke leaves the Commission and the Sports Arena bond-holders in a very sorry situation, and in the last week or so the politicians have been blasted by the bitterest press you&rsquo;d ever want to read. Hasty efforts at reconcilliation with Cooke have failed, though he may have convinced the commissioners they can operate the Arena at a profit without him. &ldquo;I received shabby treatment from them, but I wish them well,&rdquo; Cooke told us.<h2>Promised NHL New Rink</h2>REVENGE OR WHATEVER you want to call it was not his lone motive for wanting a new arena, which he would control, if not outright, which may well be the case. With a smile, he admitted that he figured the promise of a new arena in which hockey dominated the operation would clinch his pitch to the NHL bosses. And his figures would show that a new arena would return a whopping profit, even while it was being paid off. He envisions not just a sports arena, but a multifaceted enterprise incorporating a hotel, private and public dining-and-drinking clubs, bowling lanes, a movie theatre, etc. Herein, he would collect on concessions, advertising and parking, which he did not at the Sports Arena Finally, he is committed to the NHL for a new arena. &ldquo;The die is cast,&rdquo; he says. He has not been playing poker to force a better contract at the Sports Arena. He will select one of five possible sites, several of them suburban shopping centres, before this is printed probably.A month ago, I told Cooke he was the outsider in the bidding for the NHL berth. On getting the franchise, he laughingly asked me what I thought his chances were now. I said they were better than a month ago. Cooke has a list of 20 persons from which he hopes to pick the general manager and coach of his new club. No present NHL manager or coach is on the list. Hal Laycoe of Portland is on it. Cooke says, quite frankly, &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know if there will be a hockey team in L.A. next season. I would buy the Blades if Dan Reeves set what I consider a reasonable price on the club.&rdquo; It seems unlikely Reeves will want to operate a lame-duck franchise in the one-year interim between minor and major hockey in L.A., but equally unlikely he would be willing to agree to terms with Cooke. Dan, who along with other Western League members is considering law-suits to guarantee indemnity payments, might prefer to sell to Bob Breitbard, who is planning a WHL franchise in his new San Diego Arena for next fall. However, Cooke discussed with Breitbard operating the San Diego team as the L.A. farm club in the future.<h2>NHL Seals Retain Poile</h2>COOKE IS A WEALTHY whirlwind. When he goes to talk to the Coliseum commission near the University of Southern California campus, you fear he will come back owning the school. He&rsquo;d like to own his own newspaper and radio and television stations in L.A. He may have to buy L.A. to do it. He may do just that. With him providing the in spiration, every prospective land-owner who buys a lot in Southern California will now not only demand a swimming pool as part of the purchase, but his own sports arena. There may soon be an arena on every corner. We already have all sorts of fancy indoor and outdoor sports buildings going mostly un ocupied around the area. They&rsquo;d be the answer to the housing shortage. If L.A. had one. Which it does not.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-02490/2333791-1-eng-US/f0015-022.jpg" title="f0015-02" width="259" height="434"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bud Poile</figcaption></div>No such problem confronted George Fle harty&rsquo;s Shasta Corporation and the other owners, who purchased the Seals in San Francisco prior to landing their NHL franchise. The NHL flatly ordered them out of the Cow Palace and into the new Otkland Arena across the bay. The California Seals, as they will be called, will operate in the WHL next season. Fleharty says, &ldquo;Bud Poile is my manager.&rdquo; Poile says, &ldquo;Charley Burns is my coach.&rdquo; The Seals are having a lousy season, but Fleharty says, &ldquo;With more money at his disposal, Poile can put a representative Western League team on the ice next season while he is building toward NHL strength.&rdquo; &#9632;

PORTLAND, Ore.When the season began, a strengthened Victoria club was picked to dethrone a weakened Portland club. The players and press of Portland have taken this as an insult that anyone dared pick any team to finish ahead of Portland and have used it as an inspiration, which has hoisted the Bucks ahead of the Leafs after a season-long chase.In a way, their feeling that they had the best team all along would seem to diminish their accomplishment in finally getting ahead of Victoria in the pennant race: If they were the best, why did they trail all season ?<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-03411/2333829-1-eng-US/f0015-032.jpg" title="f0015-03" width="285" height="417"><figcaption class="caption-body">Mike Donaldson</figcaption></div>The facts are that the coaching of Hal Laycoe and the spirited teamwork of the well-balanced squad he has fit into his style of play has carried the team to a surprising performance, for which all concerned deserve great credit. In fact, if the Bucks continue their pace, they will wind up with new league records of 46 wins and 98 points.Both Portland and Victoria have had to contend with injuries along the way. Victoria has also had to contend with recalls by its parent Toronto organization. The Leafs have not won in five games since Milan Marcetta and Fred Hucul were sent to Tulsa for two weeks. However, when this is pinpointed as the reason for Victoria&rsquo;s slip from the lead, Portland people point to their own loss of Tommy McVie, Mike Donaldson and Dick Van Impe with injuries as balancing the scales.Victoria people are not claiming any unfair handicaps, Manager Buck Houle said, &lsquo;It&rsquo;s hurt us to lose Marcetta and Hucul, but Portland has had to contend with the loss of key men through injuries all season and have done a fabulous job under the circumstances. It&rsquo;s simply up to us to do a better job the rest of the way.&rdquo;Stunned by a 3-3 tie by Victoria in Portland, the Bucks bounced back to nose out Victoria in Victoria 3-2 and shave Victoria&rsquo;s season-series edge over them to 5-4-2 with one game in Victoria to go. Bill Saunders not only shadowed and blanked Victoria ace Andy Hebenton, but fired in the winning goal in 1:11 of overtime.The Bucks, who drew 19,487 fans to back-to-back weekend home games, have lost only one game, to reviving L.A., in their last eight. That one was goalie Dave Kelly&rsquo;s first loss at home in Portland since February of 1964. And the team&rsquo;s first loss at home in 15 games since midDecember. Since Kelly took over, veteran Don Head has been unable to get back in the lineup. They are the only net-minders in the circuit with goals-against averages of less than 3.00.Donaldson is recovering from his appendectomy, the casts have come off McVie&rsquo;s broken ankle and Van Impe&rsquo;s separated shoulder, all have resumed skating and should provide Portland with added strength down the stretch.AROUND THE LEAGUE &mdash; In Seattle, Hy Zimmerman writes of a clique rebelling against coach Bobby Kromm&rsquo;s stern tactics which is diluting the Totem effort. The Totems have lost three of their last four games, but cling to the fourth and last playoff spot, a position that seemed beyond their reach at the beginning of the season. &#9632;

PAUL, Minn.General manager Jake Milford and coach Fred Shero of the Minnesota Rangers had their team only a few points back of Oklahoma City and St. Louis, in the Central Pro Hockey League, when they said, &ldquo;We&rsquo;re in this race all the way. This is one of the toughest league races with no team giving away anything.&rdquo;<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-04199/2333960-1-eng-US/f0016-042.jpg" title="f0016-04" width="246" height="417"><figcaption class="caption-body">Mike McMahon</figcaption></div>Actually both Milford and Shero had the right to smile as they saw their club hitting their stride.When New York Rangers sent defenseman Mike McMahon down to them after 34 games with the NHL club, Shero had it figured that the 182-pound rearguard would tighten the blueline corps considerably,Milford stated, &ldquo;He gained plenty of confidence up there with the Rangers but was not getting full-time ice play. He comes back here wanting to play regularly and we sure have a spot for him.&rdquo;Paul Andrea, the 24-year-old rightwinger called up by the parent hanger drew special praise from Shero as the club returned from an eight-game road trip in which they only lost three games.&ldquo;That Andrea came through with six goals and picked up three assists. He was aggressive and really mean and it all showed in the improvement of his overall play. Watch out, he could win that scoring title.&rdquo;Andrea had become the loop&rsquo;s top sniper with 27 goals in 47 games and was only four points back of St. Louis&rsquo; Art Stratton topping the circuit&rsquo;s scoring parade. However, his recall by the Rangers will cost him valuable ground in his bid to overtake Stratton.OKLAHOMA CITY &mdash; Bill Levins, general manager of the Blazers, lauded the efforts of playing-coach Harry Sinden as the Blazers held a one-point lead over St. Louis in the front-running position of the six-club circuit.&ldquo;When you look around the league and see the personnel particularly at St. Louis, Memphis and Tulsa and the standings where we are with inexperienced players, it points to his ability. Remember we started out last this season but Harry got the players straightened out and we can become the champions.&rdquo;ST. LOUIS &mdash; The Braves keep moving along and although they have seen Pat Stapleton and Lou Angotti move up to Chicago, they welcomed 29-year-old centerman Len Lunde shipped their way from Chicago.Lunde had 50 goals and 46 assists last season working with Art Stratton, now a team mate with the Braves, when they both were with Buffalo of the American League.Defenseman John Miszuk had a two-game stint with the Chicago club but was back with the Braves as they held tight to a first place tie with Oklahoma City.MEMPHIS &mdash; As his Wings fell from their lofty first-place perch to fifth place in the standings, coach Vic Stasiuk was worried as he said, &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve only won two of our last 11 games, four points out a possible 22 &hellip; We just got to get together playing winning hockey again.I&rsquo;ll keep Joe Daley in goal, like all the players he must assume part of the blame for our slump. He must learn to stay on his feet in tough times to develop right. We&rsquo;ve missed goals from Max Mestinsek after his big start. We just have to start hitting the net again and then we&rsquo;ll be all right.&rdquo;Stasiuk was heartened by a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma City on Memphis ice snapping the 11-game winless streak with defenceman Jim Watson breaking up the contest in the third period.HOUSTON &mdash; As the Apollos started on their way back into contention with newcomers Gary Butler and Butch Barber in the lineup. <div class="byline">BY HARVEY POLLACK</div>KNOXVILLE, Tenn.Doug Bentley, Knoxville&rsquo;s sage pilot, has a rosy outlook these days for the Eastern Hockey League playoffs even though there&rsquo;s a good chance that his club won&rsquo;t finish higher than the fourth slot in the Southern Division.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0017-1324/2334193-1-eng-US/f0017-132.jpg" title="f0017-13" width="247" height="428"><figcaption class="caption-body">Chuck Stuart</figcaption></div>Bentley&rsquo;s optimism stems from two factors &mdash; the improved all-around play of his club and the resurgence of Eddie Burr into a scoring threat to complement ace pointmaker Chuck Stuart.&ldquo;I&rsquo;d say that the four top teams in the South are capable of beating any one of the others,&rdquo; Doug said. &ldquo;Our trouble is that we didn&rsquo;t get going until the last month or else we would be higher in the race. But the payoff is in the playoffs and I&rsquo;m confident we&rsquo;ll be ready.&rdquo;The Knights have no worries about last place Jacksonville catching them in the stretch run of the race, and it&rsquo;s not likely, though possible, that they will overtake either Greensboro or Charlotte. So in any event the Knights will wind up with the home rink disadvantage regardless of who they face in the post-season play.Yet this factor doesn&rsquo;t discourage Bentley. He points to Burr who has turned into a crowd-pleaser and goal scorer for the Knights since he was switched from a defensive billet to left wing.&ldquo;I&rsquo;d say Burr is the hottest left winger in the league right now,&rdquo; Bentley said. &ldquo;If he keeps skating the way he has been, Eddie&rsquo;s bound to get even better. He&rsquo;s hustling and the goals are coming for him.Stuart, the circuit&rsquo;s record holder for one season in goals and points, posted 47 goals in 51 games and is right on the heels of Dick Roberge of Johnstown and Ron Hergott of New Haven in the EHL scoring race. He tops the Knights in goals, assists, and points, almost doubling the totals of his nearest rivals.JACKSONVILLE: Gerry Rafter won&rsquo;t report to Rockets from Long Island, Pat Egan says because &ldquo;he doesn&rsquo;t want to go from a first place team to a last place team.&rdquo; An attempt to get Cliff Pennington from the West Coast failed. Egan was able to induce Don Grosso to finish the year. Egan reluctantly is still suiting up due to shortage of personnel. <div class="byline">BY BOB REED</div>FORT WAYNE, Ind. &mdash;The International Hockey League continues to roll up a record number of overtime games, but this could be the last season for the extra - period contests.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0018-01320/2334269-1-eng-US/f0018-012.jpg" title="f0018-01" width="288" height="420"><figcaption class="caption-body">Joe Kastelic</figcaption></div>Several general managers around the circuit have expressed themselves as opposed to the &ldquo;sudden death&rdquo; period and it may come up for a vote at the next annual meeting.By mid-February the IHL had engaged in a total of 23 overtimes. Last season&rsquo;s total was 18.Nine of the 23 extra-period battles remained tied after the overtime.Muskegon&rsquo;s Mohawks were the most overworked players in this respect. They had engaged in ten overtimes, winning four, losing two and tieing four. Fort Wayne&rsquo;s Komets were right behind with nine and a 2-2-5 record. Des Moines had played eight, winning two, losing four and tieing two. Toledo had 1-4-2, Dayton 2-2-2 and Port Huron 1-0-4.Ken Wilson, general manager of the Toledo Blades, said he was against overtime and that he intended to place the subject on the agenda for the next meeting. He also said he would call for action on making headgears for all players and face masks for goalies compulsory.Ken Ullyot. head man of the Fort Wayne Komets, said &ldquo;I am personally opposed to overtime play, although I realize that the fans are probably in favor of it because of the additional thrill. My reason for opposing the sudden-death play is to give visiting teams a break. IHL Governors May Eliminate Overtime Play; Joe Kastelic Runs Career Goal Record To 468

<div class="byline">BY RAY SHANK</div>CORNWALL, Ont. &mdash;Hockey fans in Eastern Ontario are still talking about the 43-0 score recorded by Cornwall Royals over Hawkesbury Meteors, in a recent Central Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; Hockey League match.Ottawa District Hockey Association officials feel the 43 pucks fired by the Cornwall team in Hawkesbury&rsquo;s net is an ODHA record for organized hockey and some say it might even be a Canadian record.It was, by far, the most lopsided massacre in the three-year history of the CJHL.Cornwall Arena officials thought they might have to purchase a new scoreboard after the Royals&rsquo; uprising. Ahead 12-0 after the first period, the Cornwallites fired 14 more in the Meteors&rsquo; net and kept up the target practice in the final stanza, this time blinking the red light for 17 markers.Royals, who took over sole possession of second place in the league standings after the win, took an unbelievable 79 shots at goalie Francois Dallaire. On the other hand the shorthanded Meteors took only six on Cornwall goalie Harold Murphy, four of these in the first period.Hawkesbury has been in the league cellar since the start of the season and hasn&rsquo;t a chance of grabbing a playoff berth, having won only three games and tying two. For the past two or three weeks, the Hawkesbury management has had to operate with mostly juvenile players, since most original members of the club left the team because of previous management problems.Alf Taylor, Ottawa District secretary - registrar, although he said such a one-sided score was not good for the league, complimented the team management for filling all engagements. The last time the Meteors won was Jan.2, by a 3-2 score over ninth place Arnprior Packers. They&rsquo;ve suffered bad beatings since, but have stayed in the league, despite many financial problems. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JACK GATECLIFF</div>LONDON, Ont.There&rsquo;s little doubt that London Nationals, a first-year entry in the Ontario Hockey Association junior A league, have had their full share of problems this season.The only question is whether they&rsquo;ve had more trouble on the ice or on the management level.Barring a late-season surge, the Nationals are almost certain to miss the playoffs.Except for a brief few days in mid-January when they rose to eighth position, they have been in the cellar since the first week of the schedule.As eight of the nine teams qualify for the playoffs, the London team had a short period of hope before plunging back into the basement.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-01296/2334362-1-eng-US/f0019-012.jpg" title="f0019-01" width="274" height="417"><figcaption class="caption-body">Neil Clark</figcaption></div>However it hasn&rsquo;t just been lack of victories which has been bothering the Nationals.They have apparently been experiencing difficulties in other places.A long-rumored rift between Coach Jack McIntyre and Manager Art Lawson was brought into the open with less than a month left in the 48-game schedule when team president R. L. Bonnie announced that both men had been suspended.A player delegation, led by Captain Neil Clark, went to Bonnie after a recent loss to Montreal Canadiens and demanded that changes be made.&ldquo;The players were torn between two loyalties,&rdquo; said Bonnie. &ldquo;They didn&rsquo;t know who was running the team, the manager or the coach. And they indicated little respect for either of them as a result of a feeling that both parties were interfering with the respective duties of the other.&rdquo;Manager Lawson was actually suspended by two different groups almost simultaneously.As well as getting the axe from the Nationals&rsquo; president, he was also suspended by Ontario Hockey Association SecretaryManager Bill Hanley for allegedly throwing a puck in the direction of one of the linesmen during the Montreal game.&ldquo;Lawson was in charge of the pucks,&rdquo; said Hanley. &ldquo;When a linesman asked him for one, he hesitated, then tossed it in the direction of the official.&rdquo;Until successors are named, London Arena Manager Ebbie Bishop will act as interim coach and manager.It&rsquo;s been a rough initial season for London Nationals in the country&rsquo;s best junior hockey league.<h2>Little Letup</h2>As the schedule narrows down to a matter of weeks instead of months&rsquo; there&rsquo;s no sign of a letup in the pressure for every position.Even the London team, although inconsistent, still has a mathematical chance of making the playoffs with six games remaining to play.Peterborough Petes split two games with Hamilton Red Wings, losing 7-4 in Hamilton, then winning 4-1 on home ice and sandwiched in a 5-5 tie in Niagara Falls to boost their first place margin to three points over the Falls Flyers.However the Flyers, who dedefeated Kitchener 5-0 in their only other game, are still very much in contention with a game in hand.Oshawa Generals are also close enough to make it a three-way race for the pennant, remaining two points behind the Flyers although only adding one point during the week. &#9632;

It was a season that saw a new points record established, a five player trade, and some high-scoring games.The Fort William Canadiens, with eleven straight wins to end the season, finished on top, seven points ahead of the Port Arthur Marr&rsquo;s.Ray Adduno of Port Arthur Marr&rsquo;s, Lakehead sportsman of the year in 1965, established a new points record with a total of 91 points on 36 goals and 55 assists. &hellip; The old record of 85 points was held by Stan Baliuk in the 1953-54 camgaign with the Fort William Canadiens Adduno&rsquo;s assist total is also a record. Bettering Baliuk&rsquo;s 50 &hellip; Due mainly to sitting out a few game suspensions, Tim McCormack of Marr&rsquo;s fell 5 short of tieing the most goals record of 45 held by Pepi Gvora also in the 1953-54 season.The big trade was pulled on December 7/65 when the rookie laden Westfort Hurricanes gave up their veteran foreward, and leading scorer at the time, Bill Cooke and defenseman John Croker to the Port Arthur Marr&rsquo;s in exchange for goaltender Joe Skakowski, defenseman Jerry Shyiak, and forward Jihn Kennedy &hellip; Within five days of the trade all three figured in the Herks first victory of the season &hellip; The high scoring contests usually involved the Westfort Hurricanes with Marr&rsquo;s scoring the most goals on the opposition with a 15-2 win on December 28/65 The previous month they put home 14 with the Canadiens scoring a 14-0 victory on December 7/65.Ted Tucker of Canadiens and John Adams of Marr&rsquo;s had three shutouts apiece &hellip; This included a 0-0 contest between the two in the Port Arthur arena that was ruled a completed game after 37 minutes and 23 seconds of play on December 30/65 due to a lighting failure &hellip; Canadiens scored the opening goal 22 times, winning 20 and tieing two &hellip; A goal at the :32 mark of a game on January 4/66 gave Greg Smith of Canadiens the quickest opening goal &hellip; Marr&rsquo;s scored the two fastest consecutive goals this season On December 28/65 McCormackscored at the 1:13 mark of the third with Adduno denting the twine 6 seconds later at 1:19.The two quickest goals scored in a game on November 27/65 when Westfort&rsquo;s Jim Palenko scored just 4 seconds after Rick Erickson of Fort Frances Royals &hellip; Adduno had two 5 - goal nights with his linemate McCormack scoring four times twice &hellip; Laverne Margarit of Canadiens also had two 4-goal performances &hellip; both in the space of nine days during January &hellip; Adduno scored 35 more points than his last year&rsquo;s total of 56 which was second to Dwight Winter&rsquo;s 58 The clubs played six more games than last season&rsquo;s 24-game schedule McCormack had 32 more points over last year&rsquo;s 41 and a third place finish Ron Wheele more than tripled his last year&rsquo;s output of 10 goals and 5 assists &hellip; Marcel Too kaney finished last season with only 8 points on 3 goals and five assits Murray Smith finished in sixth spot a year ago with 16 and 20 for thirty-six points John Schella of Canadiens led the defensemen in scoring this season with 37 points on 8 goals and 29 assists He finished second to Kabel of Fort Frances last season Laverne Margarit more than doubled his last year&rsquo;s total of 18 points &hellip; Cooke split his points evenly, scoring 19 for both Westfort and Marr&rsquo;s Although it was an exact reverse with Marr&rsquo;s receiving 14 while Herks got 5 goals. &#9632;

He started his career with Toronto and joined Boston during the 1954-55 season. Boivin is regarded as one of the hardest body-checkers in the game.Prentice, also 33, and a 13-season veteran, has scored 236 goals including seven this season. Besides Murphy and Doak, they will receive an amateur player to be named later plus an amateur draft concession.Boivin has been a popular player in Boston where the fans like robust hitters. The Bruins have always had one of the type, and before Boivin it was Fern Flaman. Boivin has been a willing player, too, one who will do anything to help his team. He played left wing for a while a couple of years ago, though defence is obviously where he belongs.This is a good break for Boivin and Prentice, since they&rsquo;re going to a team that has a chance to win everything.Abel had to do something in a hurry because all NHL lineups are frozen one month before the season ends on April 3.&ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to try to make a trade either Boston or New York,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;But I&rsquo;m not optimistic that I can come up with anything. I have talked to both clubs before and I will talk to them again.The fellow he probably wanted from the Rangers is Harry Howell, a solid defenceman with the necessary experience and whose age makes him tradeable. The Rangers are on record as committed to a policy of youth and size. &#9632;
