Buffalo Veteran Billy Dea Becomes AHL’s New Iron Man’ In 526th Game
BUFFALO, N.Y. For years, the only thing the Buffalo Bisons ever got in Cleveland was a hard time. If only for a brief moment, it was different Christmas Night, when William Fraser (Billy) Dea was honored by the Cleveland Barons. In his eighth season with the Bisons, and his 13th professional, Dea established an American Hockey League consecutive-games record of 526, and wiped out the former record of 525, held by defenseman Bill Need ham of the Barons. Needham, the Barons’ captain whose streak was ended last winter when he missed six games because of a knee injury, made a presentation to Dea between periods. Although Needham is in his ninth season with the Barons, he and Dea have little more than a nodding acquaintance. “I suppose it seems rather odd that two guys can play…
Balon ‘Forgotten Man’ On Habs, Was All-Star Prospect In 1964
MONTREAL, Que.— It was two weeks ago that a man was wandering along Mon treat’s St. Cathrerine Street, killing a little time before a game between Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. As he passed one of the brightly lit stores, his attention was caught by the figure of a man puffing thoughtfully on a cigar and intently studying a display of tape recorders in one of the gaily-beldecked windows. There was something familiar about that figure, and on closer inspection it turned out to be Dave Balon … a man who makes infrequent appearances on left wing for the Stanley Cup champs, these days. He wasn’t due to make an appearance that night against Leafs, and here he was studying tape recorders in a store window a dozen blocks from the Forum,…
Woodstock’s Bobby Robinson Holds Ontario Senior League Point Lead
GALT, Ont. The duel for the OHA senior hockey scoring championship is just as close as the five-team race for first place and playoff positions. Bobby Robinson of the fast-rising Woodstock Athletics has assumed the individual scoring lead but four other contenders are within three points of him. Robinson broke a four-way tie for the lead with a goal and an assists as A’s won their fourth game in a row to climb into a second place tie. The Woodstock centre has 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points. Joe Hogan of Galt Hornets holds second place with 32 points, 12 goals and 20 assists. Two Oakville Oak wingers, Moe Galand and Jack Price, were blanked in a Tuesday loss and are tied for third place with 31 points each. Earl Balfour, playing coach…
Fiery Temper Hampers Habs’ Star, Learning To Adjust Proves Difficult
MONTREAL, Que. — You often hear it said that the day of the individual is ending, as far as hockey is concerned; that with the exception of a few super stars, players are required to conform to an image and perform according to a pattern. In other words, teamwork is the thing. If a player can’t fit into a given mould … he can’t adjust his style and thinking so as to benefit his club, he’ll soon be on his way elsewhere. There’ve been some notable examples of this in recent years, the chief of which is probably the case of Andy Bathgate. He was, and is, a man of stature in this league, yet he never really fitted into the Toronto Maple Leaf pattern and was traded fairly quickly to Detroit. The…
