Crozier Ahead Of Big Rookie Year Pace, Sparks Wings’ Surge in Tense NHL Race

DETROIT, Mich. — As Roger Crozier’s goals against average goes down, down, down the Red Wings’ chances go up, up, up. The Red Wing goalkeeper, rookie of the year last season, the All-Star goalie and almost winner of the Vezina Trophy, has backstopped the Wings’ climb from a one night occupancy of the cellar to a shot at the leaders. The 23-year-old Crozier has been doing it with an even better goals against average than he had last season. Roger experienced problems at the start of the campaign like the rest of the club. Crozier had a stomach ache and the rest of the club felt the pains. Unfamiliar linemates contributed to meager production up front but after a 15-game shakedown, the Wings started meshing and Crozier kept rivals out of his mesh. Roger allowed 44…

Buffalo Veteran Billy Dea Becomes AHL’s New Iron Man’ In 526th Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. For years, the only thing the Buffalo Bisons ever got in Cleveland was a hard time. If only for a brief moment, it was different Christmas Night, when William Fraser (Billy) Dea was honored by the Cleveland Barons. In his eighth season with the Bisons, and his 13th professional, Dea established an American Hockey League consecutive-games record of 526, and wiped out the former record of 525, held by defenseman Bill Need ham of the Barons. Needham, the Barons’ captain whose streak was ended last winter when he missed six games because of a knee injury, made a presentation to Dea between periods. Although Needham is in his ninth season with the Barons, he and Dea have little more than a nodding acquaintance. “I suppose it seems rather odd that two guys can play…

Boston Bruins’ Ted Green Terrorizes Blues In Wild Return To National League

BOSTON, Mass. What makes Teddy run — at rival forwards? Maybe it was a month’s inactivity. Or perhaps it was the Bruins’ 12-game winless skein during his forced absence which gnawed at the Boston defenseman. Possibly, even, it was that line in the public prints HOCKEY NEWS, Dec. 25 that said he had “mellowed somewhat”. Likely all three combined to light the fuse under Edward Joseph (Ted) Green. Whatever, it all exploded for the amazing total of 47 minutes in penalties assessed him in the short span of two weekend games with New York. Eleven minutes of that three-quarters of an hour-plus Green collected Christmas night. It was his first night back and he sparked the Bruins to an aggressive 4-2 victory and picked up three assists. The following night, the Rangers, working to the…
