Stapleton’s Starry Performance May Mean Regular Spot With Hawks
CHICAGO, DI. — Black Hawk Manager Tommy Ivan is going to have to ponder long and hard before he decides to return Pat Stapleton to St. Louis. The chunky little rearguard was called up from the Central league on Nov. 28 when veteran Elmer Vasko suffered a broken toe. And it was assumed that when Vasko was ready for action, Stapleton would move back to the minors, Pat’s base of operations for most of his seven year pro career. However, since he made his Hawk debut in the Stadium against the Canadiens, Pat has performed up to big league standards in every respect. Canadian Nationals Must Improve To Beat Reds In U.S. Tournament
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Canada’s National hockey team will have to show considerable improvement if they hope to better the champion Russians in the current Walter Brown invitation international hockey tournament. The Russians are here along with the Canadians, Czechoslovakia and Sweden for a five-day round-robin tournament with the country emerging with the best record taking home the Brown Trophy, presented to commemorate the memory of the later Walter Brown, owner of the Boston Bruins of the NHL, who died last year. Canada’s chances of upsetting the Russians will depend on a superior effort on the part of the Canadians. Certainly, their record against Russia in pre-tourney exhibitions, all played in Canada, indicate they must rank No. 2 behind the Soviets. CPHL Graduates Total 13 Now Performing In NHL
DETROIT, Mich. The Central Professional Hockey League has become a big producer for the National Hockey League in its short existence. A survey of the NHL scoring records shows that the CPHL has 13 players currently in the league who got their start in the fastskating minor circuit. Another four have been up this year but have since been sent back down for more seasoning. Some of the CPHL’s illustrious graduates now performing in the NHL are Doug Jarrett, Phil Esposito and Dennis Hull of Chicago, New York’s Mike McMahon and Garry Peters. Montreal’s Jim Roberts and Claude Larose, Don Awrey and Bill Goldsworthy of Boston and Bert Marshall, Bob Wall and Jim Peters with Detroit.
