Garden Skate Sharpner ‘Tubby’ Ensign Old Hand At Tending Rangers Blades

NEW YORK, N.Y The way Edward “Tubby” Ensign sees it. skates are like little people. They need nourishment, exercise, discipline and love, all of which Tubby gives them with rare fatherly affection. With Tubby, their guardian, the 18 pair of single runners owned by the Ranger Varsity, never had it so good … and sharp. Each morning, Ensign, the Blues’ assistant trainer and chief skate sharpener, awakes his brood of blades from their resting places beneath wooden benches in the Blues’ dressing room. He then carries them, two by two, into the sharpening room for morning activity, ten times around a grinding stone, with a dash of oil for breakfast. This done. Tubby puts his flock to sleep until game time when, dressed in a fresh coat of shellack. the skates are sent…

Brenchley Fined For Ref Baiting

TOLEDO, O. Edgar (Chirp) Benchley, new coach of the Toledo Blades of the International Hockey League, was fined $25 by commissioner Andy Mulligan for arguing with the referee during a game at Port Huron, Mich. Mulligan said the Toledo coach was fined for intercepting the referee and arguing with him in the arena lobby after the first period of the Toledo-Port Huron game. In ordering $150 in fines, Mulligan also fined Ivan Prediger of Des Moines $25 for using profane language and $10 for raising his stick at a referee; John Bailey of Des Moines, $25 for jumping on the boards; Pat Ginnell of Des Moines $25 for jumping into the penalty box, and John Annable of Des Moines and Pat Donnelly of Dayton each $20 for profanity.…

U.S. Team Loses Games In Russia

FORT WAYNE, Ind. The touring Green Bay Bob Cats, with several International Hockey Leaguers in the cast, lost their first three games of an European tour to the Russians, by scores of 2-0, 5-1 and 6-5. The team, from the U.S. Hockey League, still had games to play in Switzerland and France on a 12-day tour. In charge of the tour on the business end was Ken Ullyot general manager of the Fort Wayne Komets and among the players were IHL part-time performers Roger Maisonneuve of the Komets and goalie Norm Jacques of Port Huron.…
