Bears’ Bid To Top Aces Falls Flat

HERSHEY, Pa. Just when it appeared the Hershey Bears were on the verge of closing in on the pacesetting Quebec Aces in the Eastern Division race, the bubble burst. From Nov. 13 through the 20th, Hershey racked up four straight wins—its best season stretch—to vault from fourth to second, just 11 points off the Aces and with three games in hand to its credit. Then the offense, which had been clicking at a rate of five goals a game in the short win skein, suddenly faded into near obscurity. In a span of four days, Nov. 24-27, the Bears dropped three straight, including a pair to Pittsburgh. Hershey showed three goals for; seven against. Added to this the Boston Bruins, racked with injuries on defense, recalled Barry Ashbee, cutting Hershey’s backline corps to four men.…

Maple Leafs Happy Stanley Resisted Retirement Talk With Brewer Away

TORONTO, Ont.— It seems incredible now to even think about it but when the Toronto Maple Leafs obtained defenceman Allan Stanley in 1958, the word around the National Hockey league was that he was finished. Silent Sam, who’ll be 40 next March, is into his eighth season with Leafs since that judgment was made. Stan Mikita Proving ‘Hottest’ Thing On Ice

CHICAGO, Ill. Three-goal performances in a National Hockey League are somewhat rare according to league history but Stan Mikita posted two of them last weekend and in successive nights, too. The brilliant Chicago centre, who is the NHL’s point scoring champion for the past two years, turned out to be the hottest player of the week as he shot a ‘hat trick’ in both games as the Hawks lowered the boom on Boston 10-1 and the Rangers 6-2. Mikita’s three-goal blasts pushed him to the top of the individual NHL race with 29 points as he removed Bobby Rousseau, the leader the last few weeks, from first place. Mikita now has scored 14 goals in 19 games this season, a pace exceeded only by his starry teammate, Bobby Hull, who has 17 an…
