Joe Crozier Proving Master Juggler, Keeps Amerks on Top Despite Recalls

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The revolving door on the dressing room keeps right on spinning, but the Rochester Americans keep right on winning. The defending American League champion Amerks, boasting an 11-game undefeated string at this writing, already have used 24 players…yet have had a full squad of 14 forwards and five defensemen for only a couple of their first 14 outings. Rochester still has a long way to go for the AHL record for the most players employed in a season. The Washington team of 1942-43 suited up 43 different skaters. Injuries and recalls have forced general manager-coach Joe Crozier to return to his juggling act of a couple of season’s ago, and he hasn’t lost the knack as his club’s glossy record will attest. Gump Becomes Scoring Threat Sets Up Power Play Goal

MONTREAL, Que.— Even the goalies are breaking into the scoring column, when Montreal Canadiens launch an attack, this season. Gump Worsley, the streamlined Canadien netminder, is currently the leading scorer among men who guard the cages. He has one assist to his credit, and may even now be hunting his first NHL goal. The Hab goalie passed the puck to Bobby Rousseau, while Canadiens were enjoying a man-advantage against the Hawks. Rousseau, in turn, fed it to Yvan Cournoyer and he drove it into the Chicago net. Thus, the scoring play was Cournoyer from Rousseau and the Gumper. Worsley, it’s reported, is out to shatter the scoring mark of Terry Sawchuk, who piled up two assists for Toronto Maple…

They watched Leafs lose a pair of games, bowing to Montreal and Boston…The three regular Toronto hockey writers will pick the three stars at the end of each Maple Leaf game here. This started with the Boston game on November 27…When expansion becomes a reality in the National Hockey League every one of the play-by-play announcers will work for the club and not the different stations or advertising agencies. They will be employed and answer directly to the club in much the same manner that baseball has done for years…Foster Hewitt, venerable play-by-play announcer of the Maple Leafs, will own close to 20 percent…

MEET THE ROOKIES

The Toronto Maple Leafs ore expecting big things of young BRIT SELBY this season in his rookie year. The 175-pound left wing is a product of the Leafs’ farm system and last season finished his junior career with 45 goals and 43 assists for the Toronto Marlboros. Selby got his first taste of the big time last year when he was brought up for three games and his showing was so impressive that the Leafs decided he belonged in the NHL. Brit wasn’t looking for his first National League goal this season because he got it last January in his last game against Chicago. A 5’10” youngster, he can skate with zest and is a slick puck handler as well. With the Leafs swinging more and more to younger players,…
