Hockey News Scribe Charley Barton Presented With Jim Ellery Award

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Charley Barton, veteran correspondent for THE HOCKEY NEWS, was presented with the James H. Ellery Award for his “outstanding contributions to the American Hockey League.” Barton, a hockey writer for the last 15 years with the Buffalo Courier-Express, received the trophy from Jack Riley, league president between periods of the Rochester-Buffalo hockey game here Nov. 6th. The award is named for Ellery, long-time secretary-treasurer of the AHL, who died two years ago.…

Veteran Pete Babando Quits After 22 Years In Hockey

CLINTON, N.Y.— Pete Babando has decided to quit playing hockey after 22 seasons, 10 of them in the National Hockey League. Babando, with Clinton Comets of the Eastern Hockey League this season, decided to quit last weekend. He had returned to his home at South Porcupine, Ont., to pick up his wife and children, intending to take them back to Clinton with him for the balance of the season. But he secured a promising business position and changed his mind. “I’ve been going away to play hockey for the past 22 years and that’s long enough,” he said. He added that his decision to quit was not prompted by salary differences with Clinton and that he has no beef with Clinton manager Wren Blair. Babando, 40, played for Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks…

Watson Scraping Barrel Using Only 13 Players As Injuries Rock Herd

BUFFALO, N. Y. The next guy who tells Phil Watson it’s always darkest before dawn is odds-on to wind up wearing a hockey stick as a head-piece. In addition to losing their first four games, and five of their first six, the Buffalo Bisons ran into a flock of injuries and were operating with 13 players as this edition of THE HOCKEY NEWS went to press. Watson, in his second season as the Buffalo coach, probably wouldn’t know how to handle a full complement of 16 players. A year ago, when he steered the Herd into the Calder Cup semifinals, Watson went with 14 players most of the way. Defenseman Ed Van Impe and left-winger Jack Stanfield were idled with injuries, but Watson maintained a stoic resolve. “We’re looking for hockey players, not excuses,” Watson…
