Wings Caught Up In New NHL Rule-Lose Hannigan
DETROIT, Mich. The Detroit Red Wings’ look at right wing Pat Hannigan cost them $5,000 plus training camp expenses. The Wings drafted Hannigan from Chicago’s Buffalo farm where he scored 38 goals and assisted on 54 for 92 points last season. It cost them $20,000. Abel was under the impression that if Hannigan could make the Wings, he could be assigned to Detroit’s Central Pro League club, Memphis. He knew that he couldn’t send him to Pittsburgh because a couple of years ago, Detroit drafted Ian Cushenan and Art Stratton from Buffalo, eventually put them on the Pittsburgh roster and Buffalo, stripped of its top hands, finished last and Pittsburgh first. The NHL put in a rule after that to the effect that if the drafted player couldn’t make the NHL club, he had to…
Maritime Senior League Folds For Lack Of Hockey Teams
—NEW GLASGOW, N.S. After months of uncertainty, question marks and indecision, the Maritime Senior Hockey League officially announced it would not operate during the 1965-66 season. The final blow came when teams could not be found to replace the Halifax Schooners and the Windsor-Dartmouth Keith’s, both of whom folded when they lost last year’s sponsors. It left only New Glasgow Rangers and Moncton Hawks ready for action. Replacing the circuit with another league, featuring homebrew talent, was the result of a meeting Oct. 31 but nothing definite was decided. Matters, other than teams interested, were deferred to another gabfest at Truro. A Moncton-Amherst combination, New Glasgow, Truro and Charlottetown showed interest in forming a new league but it is not expected to be of the calibre seen in the Maritime loop the past few years. The…

Revamped Barons Rip WHL Foes; McCarthy Provides Scoring Punch
CLEVELAND, Ohio Two and one-half weeks into the American Hockey League season, the Cleveland Barons still pose a big, fat question mark. What’s more, it will not be until well into November before it can be indicated clearly whether Coach Fred Glover’s icers have strengthened themselves since their dismal 1964-65 season. Last AHL team to swing into action this year, the Barons were on a strict diet of Western Hockey League foes until November 6, when they met their first old-time adversary, the Hershey Bears. In their first start of the campaign, on their home ice, the Barons dilly-dallied for a period and a half before they got the feel of things, then wrapped up the Los Angeles Blades 5-2 in an impressive performance over the last 30 minutes. Swinging west, they went on a…
