Not Consulted—Rocket Quits Post

MONTREAL, Que. Through the medium of a column he writes for a French-language weekly in Montreal, “Rocket” Richard has announced his resignation as assistant to the president of Canadiens. The former super star wrote that he was quitting his post because “it’s no fun sitting behind a desk all day with nothing to do.” Continued Richard, “The title of vice-president or assistant to the president—take your choice—was never more than honorary. I never had time to do it justice, though I would so much have liked to contribute constructively to the cause of the Canadiens. But I never was more than a goodwill ambassador.” As vice-president, “I was never invited to a meeting behind closed doors, never asked for an opinion on anything whatsoever. San Diego Gets Arena Approval

SAN DIEGO, Calif. Robert Breitbard, president of San Diego Sports Enterprises, announced the exercise of the option with the City of San Diego on the properties that are to be used as a site for the new International Sports Arena. This new sports facility, seating upwards of 14,500, will open October 1, 1966. The Sports Arena will be financed by the issuance of bonds in the approximate amount of $6,400,000. A nonprofit corporation has been organized to issue these tax exempt bonds and this corporation will sub-lease the new facility to the operating company, San Diego Sports Enterprises. Plans and specifications have already been approved by the City Building Department of the City of San Diego. Barons Appoint Keast Trainer

CLEVELAND, O.— Barry Keast, 25, is the new trainer for the Cleveland Barons. Keast replaces George Polinuk, who resigned after four years with the club to enter private business in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Keast hails from Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he served as trainer for the Niagara Falls Flyers of the Ontario Junior League. He was recommended to the Barons by former Pittsburgh Hornets trainer Tony Parisi, who now serves in that capacity for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL. Keast was hired by player-coach Fred Glover during the latter’s recent trip to Canada.…

Commencing with the first 1965-66 edition of THE HOCKEY NEWS, which will come off the press the week of Oct. 11, we will present our annual All-Star game issue in tribute to the 19th National Hockey League classic which will be played this year in the Montreal Forum.
