• HOCKEY OBSERVERS are wondering whether Canadiens’ Stanley Cup victory over the Black Hawks will influence Toe Blake in his decision to head the team again next year. Canuck First To Hold Cup

MONTREAL, Que.— The inspired playoff performance of Big Jean Beliveau has made him the first winner of the new Conn Smythe Trophy. The trophy, named in honor of the former president of Toronto Maple Leafs, goes to the player voted the most outstanding in playoff competition. A cash award of $1,000 accompanies the trophy. As winner of the latest prize in hockey, Believeau adds lustre to an already glittering career. He has twice won the Hart Trophy as hockey’s most valuable player, and is a former holder of the Art Ross Trophy, as leading scorer. In his amateur days with the old Quebec Aces, he won the President’s Cup on two occasions for outstanding ability. Urges NHL Games On American TV Hockey News Editor: Another hockey season has passed and 90 percent of the United States hockey fans had to go without seeing NHL hockey on T.V. How long will it be before the ultra-conservative owners can get together with a major U.S. network and iron out all the “difficulties” of playing Sunday afternoon games. The solution seems simple enough. Each American city with an NHL team need only have one Sunday afternoon game scheduled per month in January, February, and March. If the fans would go to see a game at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday nights, it wouldn’t put them out to go at 2:00 p.m. once a month, would it? So no team would be hurt attendance-wise. Why do we have to suffer with that intolerable basketball…
