Leafs Likely To Finish Fourth; ‘But We’ll Win Cup,’ Says Imlach

TORONTO, Ont.— The Toronto Maple Leafs have not given up hope of finishing higher than fourth position in the final NHL race but their chances appear to be slim with only a handful of games left to play. However, don’t count the Leafs out of the Stanley Cup picture by any means. Leafs’ managercoach Punch Imlach is confident his team will turn it on in the post-season playoff round just as they did the last three years. “Don’t bet against us,” said Imlach. “We’re going to win it again.” Leafs have proven during the last few years not to be taken too lightly at playoff time. The director of the Rangers’ farm system just returned from a Scandinavian trip where he turned thumbs down on Swedish icemen as future prospects. “There are no hockey players in Sweden who are of NHL calibre or even potential prospects,” he told local hockey writers at a recent press conference. The former Montreal and Toronto winger, who was hired by GM Emile Francis for just that purpose, inferred that a good juvenile club in Canada is as good as the best Sweden has to offer. “They thought I was over there to buy or steal their best hockey players,” he chuckled. “I didn’t stay too long after…

Bisons Fye Cup Playoffs May Recall Johns, Caron

BUFFALO, N. Y. The undermanned Buffalo Bisons were looking forward to the playoffs, and possible player help, as the American Hockey League schedule moved into its final weeks. After operating with only 14 men—two under the AHL limit—for almost all of the regular schedule, the Bisons, a solid second in the Western Division behind the powerful Rochester Americans, hoped to acquire a goalie, a defenseman and at least one forward for the Calder Cup classic. Ed Chadwick, purchased during the off-season from Hershey, was a major factor in the Bisons’ strong showing. However, a pair of pulled hamstring muscles were bothering him, and Chad was hoping he might get a short rest before the playoffs opened. In addition, the Bisons were seeking a backup goalie for the playoffs. With Paul Popeil operating as a…
