Wings May Have To Settle For 4th Place

DETROIT, Mich.— The National Hockey League race is taking on that familiar look—Montreal, Chicago and Toronto jousting for the top, Detroit and New York playing for fourth and the Boston Bruins distributing monkey wrenches here and there. After the Red Wings’ bright second half play last season and playoff effort there was hope kindled in the Motor City that this, finally, would be their year to rise a notch. Weight was given to the hope in the first half when the Wings parlayed a tight defense into a five-week hold on first place. The arguments, as they stand at present, are that the present system caters to the club with the strongest defense and makes the trophy a team award, which contradicts itself by being handed to an individual. However, that’s the way it is written in the rules for the award—going to the man playing the most games with the team allowing the fewest goals. Those crying for change, pointing out that men like Eddie Johnston…

Marlies, Niagara Flyers Battling Down To Wire For Title

TORONTO, ONT.— Two distinct battles are shaping up as the Ontario Hockey Association junior A schedule heads into the final quarter. At the top of the eightteam circuit the defending Ontario and Canadian champion Toronto Marlboros are engaged in a torrid struggle for first place with the 1962-63 Ontario champs from Niagara Falls. In the last three weeks the Marlboros and Flyers have seldom been more than two points apart. At the other end of the league Montreal Canadiens, Kitchener Rangers, St. Catharines Black Hawks and Hamilton Red Wings are in a life and death fight to avoid the ignominy of missing the playoffs. Six of the eight teams will qualify for the post-season games and it seems safe to bet that of those missing the charmed circle will be from the Montreal, Kitchener, St.…
