S.</p><p>The past few seasons the Chicago Cubs have waged their baseball diamond battles without the employment of a regular manager.</p><p>It could be a good plan for other sports teams to adopt.</p><p>At least that is the feeling in the camp of the Halifax Schooners of the Maritime Senior Hockey League.</p><p>During the first six weeks of the 1964-65 season the Schooners stumbled along in the loop basement despite the efforts of coach Kelly Burnett to put a winning spark into the club.</p><p>Just before the holiday season Burnett announced his resignation as Halifax coach to devote full time to his golfing duties in the city.</p><p>Veteran forward Hap Hanson, a native son of Halifax, was named to fill the vacancy until a new pilot was secured.</p><p>The way Schooners have been playing under Hanson it might be a good bet if the management defers plans to bring in a regular mentor.</p><p>Halifax started off the 1965 half of the campaign with four straight wins to move to within a single point of defending champion Windsor-Dartmouth Keith&rsquo;s. The win skein was snapped by New Glasgow Rangers but the Haligonians were in the game to the final minute.</p><p>Although many Schooner fans feel Hanson is the reason for the changed atmosphere on the team, the modest vet it not taking the credit. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a team effort all the way&rdquo;, Hap said. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of spirit on this club and that goes a long way.&rdquo;</p><p>He said he feels Schooners are just as good as the three other teams in the circuit and with a couple player additions could become a strong contender for loop honors.</p><p>A shuffling of forward lines has added new life to the club. Hanson has a hot unit in the Gilles St. Jacques&mdash;Gaeston Bouchard&mdash;Ron Allain combo and he is receiving strong efforts from the trio of Roger Wilding, Alf Flanagan and Mel Stewart. The latter was obtained from New Glasgow in a trade.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Interim Coach Hap Hanson Puts Life In Halifax Club

<div class="byline">BY DOUG DULMAGE</div><p>REGINA, Sask.</p><p>With sportswriters and sportscasters across the country getting carried away with the thought of Chicago&rsquo;s Bobby Hull scoring 60 or 65 goals this season and breaking an all-time NHL point record while he&rsquo;s at it, little room is being left for a junior in the west who&rsquo;s taking a run at a record of his own, and at a somewhat faster clip.</p><p>While most admit he&rsquo;s no Bobby Hull (and some say he&rsquo;s not even a good Fran Huck) Dave Parenteau, a flashy centre with Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is scoring three points a game.</p><p>At that pace, he&rsquo;ll have 180 points when the 60-game schedule is finished&mdash;27 more than the all-time league high set by the startling Mr. Huck last season.</p><p>Parenteau, who didn&rsquo;t have things going for him with Melville Millionnaires last season, and stayed in Estevan just long enough to find out Bruin coach Scotty Munroe wasn&rsquo;t interested in him, scored nine points during the week just passed to run his total to 106 on 37 goals and 69 assists. He&rsquo;s played just 36 games.</p><p>His latest outburst left him 15 points ahead of Huck, who still paces the goal-scorers with 52 <u>in</u> 34 games. Second biggest splurge during the week was made by Regina Pat defenseman Doug Piper. Piper notched one goal&mdash;only his fifth of the season&mdash;but added seven assists in three games to bring his total to 44, as the league-leading Pats seemed to regain their stature after a three-game losing streak.</p><p>Pats came away from two games with a pair of wins and a nine-point margin over second-place Brandon Wheat Kings, while Weyburn Red Wings went on to win their fifth straight to move into third place three points below Wheaties.</p><p>But the picture won&rsquo;t be as easy for Pats in the closing stages of the league.</p><p>Flin Flon now has won eight straight, and in the second half have most of their games at home. They&rsquo;ve gone through both their major swings for the season, and they&rsquo;ll be strengthened with the return of Ernie Ramstead, who gets back into action this week after spending several games on the sidelines because of a suspension.</p><p>Ramstead also could be the major factor in helping Parenteau to a record. The big winger compiled 37 goals and 41 assists before his suspension, and could be re-united with Parenteau on his return.</p><p>The point standings aren&rsquo;t really indicative of the teams at the moment. Only eight points separate fifth place from second and Brandon has played 39 games. Weyburn has played only 35, Estevan 37 and Flin Flon 36.</p><p>Saskatoon Blades currently hold down sixth and last playoff spot with 23 points, and at that they&rsquo;re only three points up on lowly Moose Jaw Canucks, who seem to be past the point where they were about to fold. The fans in Moose Jaw aren&rsquo;t coming out in droves by any means, but local business firms are willing to back Canucks for the remainder of this season.</p><p><b>DOTS &lsquo;N&rsquo; DASHES</b>&mdash;Fran Huck, one of three Pats to make the trip east to join Montreal Junior Canadiens for their tilt with the touring Czechs, didn&rsquo;t get a goal, but he raised a few eyebrows&hellip;Late in the second period the diminutive (he&rsquo;s really not as small as some papers make him out to be) hardrock flattened, Joseph Capla, the Czechs&rsquo; biggest defenseman. It cost him two minutes and led to the tying goal, but the penalty brought great verbal protest from the fans in Montreal. Huck managed to draw one assist&hellip;Huck&rsquo;s assessment: &ldquo;They played about the same as they did when we played them last year.&rdquo; Last year a select SJHL squad tied the Czechs in Regina with Huck scoring three goals. Regina defenseman Doug Piper agreed with Huck, but forward Andre Lagueux, a former Quebecer who also made the trip, found the going a little tough.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

HULL MONOPOLIZES AWARDS

<div class="byline">By BOB HARRIS</div><p>MONTREAL, Que.</p><p>Robert Marvin Hull was without question the most glittering performer through the first half of the National Hockey League season and it should evoke no surprise that he has turned the individual awards race into a runaway.</p><p>The smooth-skating left winger of the Chicago Black Hawks won so many honors that he stands a good chance of setting a precedent for winning individual awards by one player.</p><p>Hull was named the midway leader in voting for both the Hart Trophy as the NHL&rsquo;s most valuable player and the Lady Byng Trophy, which goes to the player who best combines clean play with value to his team.</p><p>The &lsquo;Golden Hawk&rsquo; was a runaway first in the Hart voting with 88 votes. His nearest rival was Detroit&rsquo;s Norm Ullman, who got 22. Charlie Hodge of Montreal was third and managed only 16 votes.</p><p>In the Byng race, Hull&mdash;who has scored 36 goals in the Hawks&rsquo; first 41 games on his way to another 50-goal season&mdash;collected 50 votes to almost lap the field. Camille Henry of New York was second to Hull with 28 votes and Phil Goyette his Ranger linemate, garnered 21 and Toronto&rsquo;s Dave Keon 20.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/cover-03102/2197726-1-eng-US/cover-032.jpg" title="Cover-03" width="274" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Bobby Hull</b></figcaption></div><p>Other individual trophy winners for the first half of the season were Goalie Roger Crozier of Detroit and defenseman Jacques Laperriere of Montreal Canadiens. Crozier edged Toronto right winger Ron Ellis in the voting, 67-53. Chicago netminder Denis DeJordy drew 25 votes in the poll for the Calder Trophy, won last season by Laperriere.</p><p>Laperriere, who won all-star honors last week by being named to the first team, collected 55 votes to lead the Norris Trophy balloting for the best defenseman of the year. Pierre Pilote, a three time winner of the award, followed with 32 while veteran Bill Gadsby of Detroit had 18.</p><p>Each trophy winner is enriched by $250 giving Hull another $500 to raise his personal &lsquo;take&rsquo; in the first half of the season to a cool $1,500. Laperriere boosted his first-half bonus money to $750 while Crozier finished with $500 after getting $250 as second all-star goaler.</p><p>Here&rsquo;s a breakdown on Hull&rsquo;s first half awards and bonus money:</p><p>1. Led NHL scoring race for Art Ross Trophy. Bonus $500.</p><p>2. Placed on first all-star team at left wing. Another $500.</p><p>3. Led Hart Trophy as MVP performer. Bonus $250.</p><p>4. Chicago Ace Leads Hart, Byng Trophy Races

GUMP WORSLEY, left, was hurriedly recalled by the Habs from Quebec Aces to give CHARLIE HODGE a needed respite. Hodge, who was named all-star goalie and led the Vezina Trophy race in the first half of the schedule, suddenly lost his sharpness yielding 16 goals and was benched for a rest.</b></figcaption></div><p>MONTREAL, Que.</p><p>It was less than a year ago that Jacques Laperriere announced his personal program for success in the NHL. It covered four major points, and it went like this:</p><p>1. Help Canadiens win back the Stanley Cup.</p><p>2. Win the Rookie Award.</p><p>3. Become a No. 1 All-Star.</p><p>4. Win the Norris Trophy.</p><p>The first of these ambitions has yet to be realized. The others have all become a fact.</p><p>The 23-year-old Montreal defenseman capped a brilliant first half by winning a berth on the No. 1 All-Star team and capturing the Norris Trophy. He, along with teammate Charlie Hodge and Claude Provost, was a powerful factor in Canadiens&rsquo; spirited drive to first place at the midway mark of the schedule. But, the gods of Success have a grim sense of humour, and no sooner had Laperriere and his mates achieved distinction in the first half, than a defensive collapse set in. Habs were beaten for 16 goals in a three-game stretch on home ice, and skidded out of the top spot in a hurry.</p><p>The defensive troubles were by no means confined to Laperriere. It was, as the saying goes, a team effort. Beginning with Hodge, who suddenly turned jittery; and had to be replaced by Gump Worsley and extending onwards to a defense corps who failed to protect their goalie; and continuing further to a host of forwards who quit backchecking, the collapse was widespread indeed. But, the hope was that it was also temporary. And, it willl be temporary, if Laperriere has his way!</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m going back to the system of playing it safe,&rdquo; said Jacques, after being caught up the ice on a breakaway goal in a recent contest. &ldquo;During the first half, I had a good defensive record,&rdquo; he noted, &ldquo;but, I wanted to improve offensively as well. So, when a guy would come down the ice carrying the puck, I&rsquo;d move out to meet him. My idea would be to take him out of the play before he could do any damage. But, that meant that I was making the first move, and suddenly guys were going around me. I&rsquo;m going to change that,&rdquo; said Laperriere, &ldquo;and be more of a defensive defenseman.&rdquo;</p><p>If so, Jacques may quickly recapture his first-half form; and, in so doing, inspire the club to a better defensive showing</p><p>Canadiens decided to bring Worsley and right winger Leon Rochefort up from Quebec Aces to help shake the Habs&rsquo; losing ways. Keith McCreary was also returned to Hershey Bears in the Habs&rsquo; shakeup.</p><p>Meanwhile, there was a bright spot to relieve the picture for Habs, even as the second half got underway. Claude Provost, who made his debut on an All-Star team last week, after nearly ten years in the league, was showing no signs of a letdown. The hard-working winger ripped home his 14th and 15th goals of the season in a recent game against Toronto. That gave Provost the same number of goals he&rsquo;d scored all last season.</p><p>There was irony in the fact that Provost, a 31-year-old veteran, was setting a pace that none of his mates could match. His 36 points (15-21) in 37 games was the best on the team.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

All-Star Laperriere Sees Need To Play It Safe; Canadiens Recall Worsley As Hodge Loses Touch

<p>MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;</p><p>Bear hunting will never be Bobby Rousseau&rsquo;s favorite sport.</p><p>Though his team had marked success against the Bruins from Boston in the first half of the season, Bobby personally drew a blank. He failed to score any of the 21 goals Montreal got against the Hub City crew, in the first six meetings this year.</p><p>Actually, Rousseau had only two good chances to score, and both times Ed Johnston was equal to the occasion. The first time was on a close-in shot from directly in front of the net. Johnson smothered the drive. The second was a full-scale blast that Bobby got off as he crossed the blueline. Johnson made a catch save. But, Rousseau did manage to set-up two goals for teammates, along the way, and one of them was a game-winner.</p><p>Rousseau, naturally, is hoping that he&rsquo;ll find the range against Boston, and improve off his first-half showing.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01492/2194969-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="292" height="446"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Bobby Rousseau</b></figcaption></div><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span>

Movement Of Players

<div class="byline">BY JIM PROUDFOOT</div><p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>It&rsquo;s been a trying year for members of Canada&rsquo;s Parliament.</p><p>And it&rsquo;s been a particularly hectic time for Red Kelly, the honorable representative from York West. While carrying out his duties as a backbencher on the government side of the House of Commons, he&rsquo;s been struggling to maintain first-string status with Toronto Maple Leafs, whose authority is also under constant attack.</p><p>A political greenhorn, Kelly is a hockey greybeard at 37. He is in his 18th NHL season surpassed only by Gordie Howe and Bill Gadsby, who are still active.</p><p>It&rsquo;s surprising, therefore, to note that The Senator, as his teammates call him, is Leafs&rsquo; fourth highest scorer. Next to Frank Mahovlich with 27 points, Andy Bathgate with 26 and Bob Pulford&rsquo;s 24, Kelly is next with 8 goals and 15 assists.</p><p>Kelly has been bouncing back and forth between left wing and centre in recent weeks. When Bob Pulford came off the injured list to reclaim his centre spot Kelly was shifted to left wing with Pulford and Ron Stewart.</p><p>Because of Kelly&rsquo;s versatility, he also plays the point for the Leafs. Dashing Eddie Shack has found himself without a job. Shack and Don McKenney have been bench riding in recent weeks.</p><p>Kelly is the man who beat Shack out. His cyclonic rushes notwithstanding, Eddie the Entertainer has been so negligent defensively that this development really doesn&rsquo;t come as much of a surprise. But still, on a team of amazing athletes, Kelly must rate as one of the most remarkable.</p><p>After the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring, as prominent an authority as Kelly&rsquo;s Ottawa boss, Prime Minister Pearson, said The Senator had played his last NHL match.</p><p>It seemed reasonable Kelly had 1,160 big-league games and 250 goals behind him. Now Leafs had won the so-called world championship, with Kelly collecting 13 points in 14 playoff games. It was a logical moment to effect a graceful exit.</p><p>Kelly did no such thing. As a matter of fact, his present thinking doesn&rsquo;t end with the conclusion of the current schedule. He&rsquo;s looking ahead to 1966, a time when he&rsquo;ll be nearly 39 years old.</p><p>How does he do it</p><p>Well, when he first came to Toronto in 1960, he was in relatively poor physical condition. When that improved, he rediscovered his youth and put together three 20-goal seasons. He still is trim and energetic.</p><p>Kelly has had a full career in the big time and if he were to quit tomorrow he could look back on a lifetime of achievements in the ice game.</p><p>Over the years, the smiling Irishman has won the Lady Byng Trophy more times than any other player capturing the clean player award no less than four times. He has also won the Norris Trophy as best defenseman. Veteran Red Kelly Thrives On Work, Senator’ Sets Example For Leafs

<p>TORONTO, Ont.</p><p>Red Kelly of the Maple Leafs is the newest member of the National Hockey League&rsquo;s 250-goal club after scoring his milestone goal Jan. 16 against Detroit.</p><p>The veteran Leaf climbed into 14th place among hockey&rsquo;s all-time great goal scorers with his 9th counter of the current season.</p><p>If the Toronto centre can net five more he can step up into 13th spot displacing teammate Dickie Moore, who is still seeking his first of the season. <p>MONTREAL, Que.</p><p>Five players have gained all-star recognition for the first time in their National Hockey League careers as a result of the mid season voting for the official NHL All-Star Teams.</p><p>The five are centre Norm Ullman of Detroit Red Wings, who beat out Stan Mikita of Chicago, and right winger Claude Provost of Montreal Canadiens, both named to the First Team, and goaltender Roger Crozier of Detroit and defenseman Harry Howell and right winger Rod Gilbert, both of New York Rangers, who were named to the Second Team.</p><p>Of the 12 players selected to both squads, there are three each from Montreal, Chicago, Detroit and New York. Neither Toronto nor Boston placed a player on either team. The voting was performed by sportswriters and sportscasters in each of the six NHL cities.</p><p>Another vote will take place at the conclusion of the regular 1964-65 season and the players gaining the most total points in both polls will be recognized as the official All-Stars for the 1964-65 season. Members being named to the first team in each half receive $500 each while second-team members receive $250 in each half. The over-all first-team members receive $1,000 each and second-team members $500 each.</p><p>Bobby Hull of Chicago scoring goals and points at a record pace this season, was the only player to gain a unanimous vote of 90 points, although Montreal rearguard Jacques Laperriere, last season&rsquo;s rookie-of-the-year, and Provost were close with 84 and 80 points, respectively. Voting was rated on a basis of five points for a first-place vote, three for a second and one for a third. Hull enjoyed a big margin over Camille Henry of New York, who was named on the second team with 35 points.</p><p>Tightest voting was for the goaltending position and second-team defense. Charlie Hodge won the first-team berth by five points over rookie Crozier. Howell had an eight-point margin over Carl Brewer of Toronto for the second-team defense position.</p><p>Pierre Pilote of Chicago and Hull are the only players to repeat first-place positions from last season&rsquo;s final selections while Hodge and Laperriere move up from the second team. Stan Mikita was the centre on the first team last season.</p><p>The first team comprised Hodge in goal, Laperriere and Pilote on defense, Ullman at centre, Provost at right wing and Hull left wing. <p>TORONTO, Ont.</p><p>A strong dissenting voice has been heard over the choice of personnel voted to places on the National Hockey League all-star teams.</p><p>&ldquo;That has to be the No. 1 joke,&rdquo; said Toronto assistant manager &ldquo;King&rdquo; Clancy after learning that his Maple Leafs had failed to place a man on either team. The Habs placed three men&mdash;Jacques Laperriere, Claude Provost and Charlie Hodge&mdash;on the first team.</p><p>&ldquo;I can&rsquo;t agree with Pierre Pilote being named to the first team,&rdquo; argued Clancy. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got four defensemen who&rsquo;ve had a better first half. And at centre! How can anybody overlook Bob Pulford. I like to look at a hockey player both ways. The number of points he gets isn&rsquo;t the one and only answer. How does he play defensively? That&rsquo;s what I want to know. So what happens? Pulford doesn&rsquo;t get enough votes to place among the first three in the league. As far as I&rsquo;m concerned, I wouldn&rsquo;t trade Pulford for Stan Mikita. That Mikita was the best hockey player on the Chicago team last year, but he hasn&rsquo;t played many good games this season.&rdquo;</p><p>Clancy also was unhappy with the selection of Camille Henry, of New York, to the second-team left-wing berth, and the failure of Ron Ellis, the club&rsquo;s rookie right-winger, to earn a rightwing spot.</p><p>Toronto coach &ldquo;Punch&rdquo; Imlach, who had mounted a strong campaign for Ellis as an all-star, had little comment.</p><p>&ldquo;All I can say is that we gave the selectors a chance to look foolish, and they didn&rsquo;t let me down.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<div class="byline">BY LEO MONAHAN</div><p>BOSTON, Mass.</p><p>It&rsquo;s no secret that the Bruins were negotiating a deal with Toronto&rsquo;s Maple Leafs with Eddie Shack one of the key figures. Shack, however, wiped out the transaction through a chance remark printed in a Toronto journal.</p><p>Said Shack: &ldquo;I&rsquo;d rather be traded than sit on the bench&mdash;even if it&rsquo;s to Boston.&rdquo;</p><p>The item came to the attention of Boston General Manager Lynn Patrick and the &ldquo;even to Boston&rdquo; crack stuck in his craw.</p><p>&ldquo;That was the end of that,&rdquo; said Patrick.</p><p>Patrick huddled several times with Punch Imlach and King Clancy of the Leafs and rumors had a deal just about set when Shack popped off.</p><p>Patrick, in fact, has talked with several NHL clubs about the possibility of a swap that would improve the last-place B&rsquo;s. Montreal&rsquo;s Sammy Pollock exchanged several conversations with Boston&rsquo;s front office, hoping to thwart any Boston-Toronto swap that would strengthen the Leafs.</p><p>Ab McDonald has been one of the central figures in all trade talks. Earlier in the season, Chicago discussed the possibility of regaining McDonald&rsquo;s services, but before a final decision could be made, the Black Hawks went on a lengthy winning streak.</p><p>Earlier, too, Pollock had offered Bill Hicke&mdash;subsequently swapped to New York for Dick Duff&mdash;in an even-up exchange for McDonald. The bid was turned down because, as one B&rsquo;s official put it, &ldquo;we think we can get more.&rdquo;</p><p>Toronto for some time has expressed interest in lieft wing Dean Prentice, but he&rsquo;s sidelined for the season with a fractured vertabra in his back. Prentice presently is in Newton-Wellesley Hospital and latest reports indicate his back may have to be encased in a cast.</p><p><b>AROUND THE HUB</b>&mdash; Rookie centre Ron Schock is expected to return to action within a week or so. Schock started working out with the B&rsquo;s and received a scare after his first heavy drill when his thigh injury appeared to kick up on him. Team physician Dr. Ronald Adams, however, eased Schock&rsquo;s mind by explaining it only was &ldquo;muscle fatigue.&rdquo;&hellip;McDonald, sidelined with a groin pull, is back and playing Prentice&rsquo;s wing on a line with Tom Williams and rookie Wayne Maxner.</p><p>Bill Knibbs, driven into the boards by Detroit&rsquo;s Gordie Howe, is sporting two injuries&mdash;a banged knee as a result of the crash, and a puffy ankle where he was struck by a shot in the next game against Toronto. &ldquo;Knibbs is lucky he didn&rsquo;t fracture his kneecap,&rdquo; said Dr. Adams. Howe caught Knibbs, who had stolen the puck from him a moment before, with his back turned near the Boston bench. Knibbs fell to the ice as if pole-axed and irate Boston fans stormed after Howe as he started to sit out a major penalty for boarding. Since only 5:10 remained to play. Howe was instructed to leave for the dressing room. On his way, a fan tossed a drink into his face and several fans tried to break through the police cordon to get at him. Eddie Shack’s Popping-Off Ends Chance Of Bruins Making Deal For Leaf Player

<p>MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;</p><p>George Hayes, a veteran official who has worked in more than 1,500 National Hockey League games during his career, has been indefinitely suspended by the NHL.</p><p>Hayes, a strapping man who tackled his hockey officiating job with pride, refused to submit to an eye test as ordered by the NHL. His action forced Referee-in-chief Carl Voss to announce his suspension.</p><p>Hayes said in spite of the ban on his services he would not think of taking the test even though all other NHL referees and linesmen have complied with the league edict.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s against my principles,&rdquo; Hayes said. &ldquo;If 1 went through with it, I couldn&rsquo;t live with myself. I feel I should be judged by the job I do on the ice and not by some report from an eye doctor.&rdquo;</p><p>Hayes said the suspension was the climax to a letter he had received from President Clarence Campbell on Dec. 29, heated words he had exchanged with the president on Jan. 13 in Toronto, a telephone conversation with Campbell in Montreal the next day and, finally, his refusal to take the test.</p><p>&ldquo;Campbell tried to tell me that this has been a league policy since he came into the NHL 20 years ago. That may be, but the first I heard about it was three years ago. I didn&rsquo;t do anything about it, because I felt it was an insult to ask an official to take an eye test. We have enough trouble with the players as it is. If it ever got out that we had to take eye tests, well&hellip;</p><p>&ldquo;On Dec. 29 I received a letter from Campbell pointing out that since I was the only official who had not taken an eye test, he had made an appointment for me with a Dr. Peter Rosenbaum in Montreal for four o&rsquo;clock on Jan. 14. Hayes added, &ldquo;Campbell and Voss (league referee-in-crief Carl Voss) came to the officials room in Toronto. We had heated words about the appointment. Finally Campbell said; &ldquo;Will you be there?&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;No, I&rsquo;m not gonna be there,&rdquo; I said. &lsquo;I don&rsquo;t believe in it.&rsquo;</p><p>&ldquo;Then Campbell turned to Voss; &lsquo;You heard what he said. It&rsquo;s in your hands now.&rsquo;</p><p>&ldquo;I guess Campbell took it back in his hands in a hurry,&rdquo; Hayes said. &ldquo;Because I got a call from Campbell.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;&lsquo;Are you going to that appointment?&rsquo; he asked me.</p><p>&ldquo;&lsquo;I told you in Toronto that I wouldn&rsquo;t take the eye test,&rsquo; I told him, &lsquo;I haven&rsquo;t changed by mind.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;&lsquo;You won&rsquo;t be working unless you go,&rsquo; Campbell told me.</p><p>&ldquo;&lsquo;I stand on my eyesight on the ice,&rsquo; I told him,&rsquo; and I feel I&rsquo;ve had my best first half in years.&rsquo;</p><p>&ldquo;&lsquo;It makes no difference,&rsquo; Campbell said, &lsquo;it&rsquo;s a league policy and you&rsquo;ve got to go.&rsquo; &ldquo;</p><p>&ldquo;If taking the eye test is the only way to get back, I guess I&rsquo;m through,&rdquo; he said.</p><p>Hayes is the oldest official in point of service in the league.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-02474/2195317-1-eng-US/f0005-022.jpg" title="f0005-02" width="520" height="746"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>GEORGE HAYES&hellip;Against My Principles</b></figcaption></div><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span>

Hayes Says He Refuses To Undergo Eye Test

<div class="byline">&#x2014;MONAHAN</div><p>BOSTON, Mass.</p><p>National Hockey League President Clarence S. Campbell favors an increase in the waiver price from $20,000 to $30,000 and a reduction in the number of junior A teams a NHL team can sponsor.</p><p>&ldquo;The cost of financing junior and minor league teams is getting out of hand,&rdquo; said Campbell on a recent visit here to clean up the Ted Lindsay affair. &ldquo;I think NHL clubs could get along nicely with four junior affiliates, say two in the East and a couple of others in the West.&rdquo;</p><p>The $20,000 waiver price is &ldquo;unrealistic&rdquo;, according to Campbell.</p><p>&ldquo;Eight or 10 years ago, $20,000 was a substantial amount of money.</p><p>Today any minor league club will pay $20,000 for a player on waivers, knowing it can sell him to a neighbor for $25,000 if it doesn&rsquo;t use him itself,&rdquo; he said.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not up to me to say what the waiver price should be, but we need to raise it. I brought up the matter at the meetings last year, but two clubs were not in favor. Agreement must be unanimous on matters involving club properties.</p><p>&ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s silly for players to be sitting in the stands in street clothes because the roster is full when another club could use them.&rdquo;</p><p>Asked if he were &ldquo;concerned&rdquo; about the low estate of the Bruins, Campbell said he wasn&rsquo;t.</p><p>&ldquo;Attendances are up all around the league,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;and Bruins continues to be an attraction on the road.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

PASSING THE PUCK

<p>ROCHESTER, N.Y.&mdash;</p><p>Increases in the number of post-season games and the size the the Calder Cup cash pool for players have been approved by the American Hockey League&rsquo;s board of governors.</p><p>The changes, to take effect in the 1965-66 season, were approved by the governors at a meeting in New York.</p><p>The governors also approved a request by the Rochester-Americans to play at least 10 home games next season at Toronto. The move is necessitated by a national bowling tournament scheduled to begin in February, 1966 in War Memorial Auditorium, where the Amerks play their home games.</p><p>The present $106,000 player pool will be increased to $114,000.</p><p>Next season, which will start Oct. 22, two weeks later than normal, and wind up later, April 10, 1966, the number of post-season games will be increased from best-of-five series to best-of-seven series in division playoffs and Calder Cup finals.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Amerks Plan Ten Games In Toronto

<p>DETROIT, Mich.</p><p><b>ICE CHIPS:</b> A losing lockerroom seldom is disturbed by laughter but Al Langlois broke up the Detroit room in Chicago Stadium just after the Wings lost, 3-2, to the Black Hawks.</p><p>&ldquo;What was that you said about a kangaroo court?&rdquo; Langlois asked defense partner Bill Gadsby.</p><p>Gadsby was ejected at 5:38 of the third period for arguing violently over a disallowed goal by Eddie Joyal that would have tied the game. When he failed to go to the penalty box, he drew a game misconduct as well, the same sentences that led to Ted Lindsay&rsquo;s battle with NHL president Clarence S. Campbell only a week before.</p><p>&ldquo;Maybe I&rsquo;d better send in my $75 by registered letter first thing in the morning,&rdquo; Gadsby said.</p><p>Detroit&rsquo;s new all-sports television station opened a week later than planned but all went well with the telecast of the Wings&rsquo; game from Chicago Stadium. These sportswriters criticize Rousseau&rsquo;s &ldquo;on and off&rdquo; performances. Yet, the real stars of this game (Hull, Mikita, Mahovlich, and recently-retired Boom Boom Geoffrion) have all been noted to be inconsistent performers.</p><p>Bobby is a prolific goal scorer. In his three years of N.H.L. competition, Rousseau scored 21, 19, and 25 times. In 1961-1962, he won the rookie award; yet he played on a regular line only in the second half of the season. Last year, he was eleventh in the league in total points, and included in his 25 goals were 8 winners, and a five-goal game. Bobby maintained, during his career, a good defensive record, and thus he is often a penalty-killer. He also plays the point on the power-play and has played every forward position. My only comment about his great five-goal outburst of Feb. 1, 1964, is that Bob Rousseau is the only active National Leaguer to have accomplished this electrifying feat.</p><p>Bobby&rsquo;s low skating style, his daring stickhandling, his occasional attempts at splitting the defense, his blazing speed, and his tremendous slap shot all contribute to his colourful and exciting style.</p><p>I expect that the fortunes of the Canadiens will depend, in the near future, partly on Laperriere and partly on their great little forward, Bobby Rousseau.</p><p><b>Tom Reiner,</b><br> Montreal, Que.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<div class="byline">BY RED FOLEY</div><p>NEW YORK, N.Y.&mdash;</p><p>If one word could describe the Rangers&rsquo; fifth-place plight the verb &ldquo;help&rdquo; would be more than appropriate, They&rsquo;re now losing hockey players faster than hockey games. In fact, even when the Rangers win, as they did when they beat Montreal, 6-5. on January 9, they had to sacrifice Jim Neilson and Donnie Marshall to do it.</p><p>Neilson suffered a shoulder injury and Marshall a charley horse in that one after Rod Seiling had been sidelined with a sore shoulder in a winning effort against Boston here on January 6.</p><p>The orginal estimate on Neilson was a month, but a second examination improved the diagnosis and the Indian&rsquo;s absence was reduced to a week or 10 days. Seiling, whose left shoulder was badly bruised in the game against Boston, returned to action vs Toronto here. January 10, but the youngster had to quite after he reinjured himself during the first period of a 6-0 defeat by the Leafs.</p><p>Marshall&rsquo;s ailment figured to drydock him temporarily, but his absence, plus the injuries to Seiling and Neilson forced the Blue brass to shuffle their farmhands.</p><p>Bob Plager was recalled from Vancouver and Ron Ingram, who had been rushed in to replace Seiling, was returned to Baltimore. Jim Mikol. a forward, was promoted from St. Paul as the Rangers made another line switch they hope will put some punch into their woeful attack.</p><p>Ingram and the veteran Larry Cahan failed to satisfy the galleryites in the blanking by Toronto that snipped the Blues&rsquo; modest non-losing string at three games.</p><p>Jacques Plante, who has been playing the best goal of his starry career, took a verbal roasting from the customers, but the Masked Man was blameless for the Leafs&rsquo; assault.</p><p>Emile (the Cat) Francis took exception to a writer&rsquo;s post game question regarding Ingram&rsquo;s NHL fitness, and while he vehemently defended Ron&rsquo;s ability at the time, he shipped the defenseman out the following day.</p><p>Neilson&rsquo;s injury came when he collided with Claude Provost and Jacques Laperriere when play stopped following a penalty whistle on Dave Balon midway in the middle period of the Jan. 9 win at the Forum.</p><p>That was the game in which Billy Hicke scored three goals to lead the Blues to their one goal margin. The Hicke line, on which Lou Angotti centers for Billy and left winger Vic Hadfield, accounted for four of the goals in that one.</p><p>In the previous game, against Boston. Angotti sparked the Blues to a 5-2 victory. The Rangers needed that win to snip a non-winning skein that had gone through nine games, one short of the club record for futility at the Garden. Marshall scored twice in that one, but it was Angotti&rsquo;s peppy output that made the win possible.</p><p>Looie was put between Hicke and Hadfield in the second period and while they accounted for only one tally, their hustle started the Bruins on the way down.</p><p><b>BLUE CHIPS:</b> Vic Hadfield and Leaf rookie Pete Stemkow-ski engaged in brief high-stocking duel, Jan. 10, in which Vic&rsquo;s scalp was creased. Hadfield was all for continuing it in the penalty box. but Garden specials intervened&hellip;Red Sullivan credits Cat Francis with the move that put Angotti between Hadfield and Hicke. Francis, who has been watching recent games from the mezzanine press box rather than his usual arena chair, said: &ldquo;I figured Lou&rsquo;s always working and hustling and skating and that he&rsquo;d be a big help.&rdquo;&hellip;Sullivan has been spotting the tiring Cammy Henry. The Eel has been working mostly on power plays. How long Sully can enjoy the luxury of Henry on part-time remains to be seen&hellip;Rangers returned Ted Taylor to Baltimore after he failed to impress in his one game trial against the Bruins&hellip;Jim Mikol was ordered here from St. Paul to fill in for Don Marshall, but Mikol&rsquo;s plane was grounded by midwest snowstorms, Jan. 10. and Blues dressed Rovers&rsquo; Trevor Fahey for Leaf game. Rangers Lower Boom On Habs But Pay Price In Manpower

<p>TORONTO. Ont.&mdash;</p><p>Broadcaster Foster Hewitt and Tom Lockhart, a long-time guiding force in U.S. amateur hockey circles and president of the Eastern Hockey League, were named to the hockey hall of fame.</p><p>Hewitt has long been known as The Voice of Hockey in Canada since the inception of his radio broadcasts of the game dating back to the early 1930&rsquo;s.</p><p>Lockhart, president of the U.S. Amateur Hockey Association. has been closely identified with the game, in the United States for more than two decades.</p><p>Hewitt, now 60. is in his 42nd consecutive year of broadcasting hockey games. His first broadcast was in March. 1923, from the old Mutual Street Arena in Toronto. This was a senior amateur game.</p><p>Two new members were named to the Hall of Fame selection committee, Jim Norris, owner and president of the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League; and Gorron Juckes, Melville. <div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div><p>DETROIT, Mich.</p><p>Sid Abel was complaining about the National Hockey League schedule that twice this season has given the Red Wings five straight days off, several times given them four games in five days.</p><p>But Roger Crozier isn&rsquo;t complaining.</p><p>This latest five days off stretch meant a Miami Beach vacation for the 22-year-old Red Wing rookie goalie and his wife, Arlene. Not only a mid-season holiday but all expenses paid, too.</p><p>The temperature read 30 degrees in Detroit and 80 degrees in Miami when Crozier was ordered to Florida for a three-day holiday in the sun and surf by Wing boss Sid Abel.</p><p>How&rsquo;s that for orders?</p><p>Crozier, who just lost the $250 Vezina Trophy mid-year bonus to Montreal&rsquo;s Charlie Hodge but picked it up again as Calder Trophy leader, had difficult times in three straight games, yielding 16 goals with the Wings losing two of the three.</p><p>He gave up three more in a fourth game as the Wings stretched a losing streak to three games, longest they&rsquo;ve had all season, but Abel wouldn&rsquo;t fault him on those three, two power play goals by Pierre Pilote and one blistering shot by Dennis Hull which Crozier got a piece of but couldn&rsquo;t hang onto.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been seeing all those posters in the airports showing the beach, pools and golf courses saying &lsquo;C&rsquo;mon Down&rsquo;,&rdquo; Crozier said, &ldquo;but I didn&rsquo;t think I&rsquo;d be going.&rdquo;</p><p>It is rare. He&rsquo;s only the second Red Wing to ever get a club-paid vacation during the season. The other was Ted Lindsay back in February, 1950, and that stirred the hockey world.</p><p>Jack Adams and Jim Norris, then club vice-president, figured Teddy was looking a little drawn and peaked so they dispatched him to Hot Springs, Ark., to soak in the baths for five days. They turned down Miami because Lindsay was sensitive to the sun and. they didn&rsquo;t want him to come back sunburned.</p><p>It wasn&rsquo;t a bad move. Lindsay wound up the year as the NHL scoring champion, the only year he accomplished the feat.</p><p>&ldquo;But when he came back from Hot Springs, he was terrible for a couple of games,&rdquo; said Abel, then Lindsay&rsquo;s centre. &ldquo;The puck was like a hot potato,&rdquo; Abel laughed.</p><p>Abel obviously doesn&rsquo;t figure that will happen to Crozier and, hedging his trip, he had Crozier come back Friday so that he could practice before the next night&rsquo;s game at Toronto, which the Wings won 4-2.</p><p>&ldquo;Roger hasn&rsquo;t been as sharp and may be this rest will perk him up a bit,&rdquo; Abel said, &ldquo;take his mind off hockey for a few days.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s sink or swim with the rookie netminder and the Wings did very well with him in the first half of the season.</p><p>But the full 70-game route, especially in this speeded-up game with harder shots than ever, deflections and pressure, is hard on any player but more so on a goaltender.</p><p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t feel tired,&rdquo; Crozier said, &ldquo;but maybe you can be tired without knowing it.&rdquo;</p><p>And, Crozier is one of the smallest men plying his trade. In the NHL, only Montreal&rsquo;s Charlie Hodge is smaller. Both are listed at 150 pounds, which seems pretty generous, but Crozier is listed at 5-feet-8 inches, two inches taller than Hodge.</p><p>Abel also made another move designed to help Crozier. He sent 26-year-old native Detroiter Carl Wetzel to Pittsburgh for two weeks to fill in for injured Hank Bassen in goal.</p><p>&ldquo;Carl could be our best goalie prospect behind Roger but he hasn&rsquo;t really had a chance to show anything. He&rsquo;s played in only two exhibition games and half of an NHL game since the season started and it wouldn&rsquo;t be fair to him to just throw him into NHL play.</p><p>&ldquo;This way we&rsquo;ll see what Carl can do and if all goes well, for him and if we&rsquo;re doing well here, he can come back and give Roger a breather once in awhile,&rdquo; Abel said.</p><p>With Wetzel sent to the Hornets, Bob Champoux was called up to act as standby goalie for the Wings making the full circuit for Champoux who started the season as backup man for Memphis, then moved up to Pittsburgh to help out during Bassen&rsquo;s absence.</p><p>Actually, Champoux has seen service with three clubs&mdash;he was loaned to Minneapolis by Memphis for a game and proceeded to blank his Memphis teammates.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-01567/2195772-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="280" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Roger Crozier</b></figcaption></div><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span>

Wings Remember Lindsay’s Hot Springs Safari, Order Goalie Crozier To Florida For Vacation

<p>DETROIT, Mich.</p><p>Three former Red Wings stars who helped Detroit win a record seven consecutive National Hockey League championships have been named to the Old Timers roster for the second annual Red Wing&mdash;Old Timers game Jan. 25 at Olympia.</p><p>Goalie Harry Lumley and defensemen Bob Goldham and Leo Reise, Red Wings during the championship era 1949 through 1955, were named to the squad by Stu Evans, past president of the Red Wing Alumni Association and chairman of the Old Timers game.</p><p>Evans also released the names of 17 other players&mdash;including himself&mdash;who will face the current Red Wing squad in the first half of a hockey doubleheader.</p><p>In the second game, an All-Star Team from Detroit&rsquo;s new Metropolitan Junior Hockey League will meet the Red Wings&rsquo; Hamilton (Ont.) Junior B. Team.</p><p>Evans said 15 players named to the Old Timers team also participated in last year&rsquo;s contest, won by the 1963-64 Red Wing team, 6-4.</p><p>Making their first appearance in the classic will be Lumley, Goldham, Reise, centre Don Grosso and left wing John Sorrell.</p><p>Grosso, a member of the Red Wing Hall of Fame and the team&rsquo;s top scorer in 1941-42, played for Detroit from 1938-39 through 1944-45. Ex-Red Wing Stars Lumley, Goldham Join Old Timers For Olympia Game

<div class="byline">BY JIM PROUDFOOT</div><p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>The Maple Leafs&rsquo; recent personnel shortage has demonstrated one of the chief reasons they&rsquo;ve dominated big league hockey the past three seasons.</p><p>They&rsquo;ve got depth. It just took a series of injuries to convince coach Punch Imlach it was time to see what kind of replacements he had throughout the farm system.</p><p>He reached down to Leafs&rsquo; American League farm team at Rochester and took centre Pete Stemkowski, a rookie right out of junior hockey. Stemkowski stepped right into a regular slot and set up both goals in a 2-1 victory over Boston Bruins. He has since scored twice and added four assists.</p><p>Imlach even borrowed 19-year-old Brit Selby from Marlboro juniors and saw the youngster score two key goals, while doing an impressive defensive chore, in three games.</p><p>And there&rsquo;s the additional example of Ron Ellis, who&rsquo;d scored 13 goals before concussions in two successive games forced him to take a rest.</p><p>Missing a few games probably cost Ellis his chance to be named the National League&rsquo;s top rookie. He and Stemkowski were linemates with Marboros last season, when they won the Canadian junior championship.</p><p>Imlach, admitting injuries had forced him to make lineup shuffles that were long overdue, said there were other impressive farmhands he wanted to see in NHL combat. Andre Champagne, a hard-checking forward with Tulsa in the Central League, would have been promoted before this, but for the intervention of an injury. And Imlach gets excellent reports on Rochester defenseman Duane Rupp.</p><p>Imlach was certain he had plenty of fine young skaters, if only because Marlboros had crushed their junior competition so easily last season. However, he took the position that the men who retained the Stanley Cup last spring deserved to get first crack at NHL jobs this season.</p><p>About the time Imlach was losing patience with his veterans, the injuries began to come quickly and furiously.</p><p>It&rsquo;ll be interesting to see what happens when Andy Bathgate and George Armstrong and the others recover. Dislodging the rangy Stemkowski is going to be a difficult challenge.</p><p>It&rsquo;s noteworthy that Ellis, Stemkowski and Selby play textbook hockey, always in the right position, always flawless on defense. This is a tribute to Jim Gregory, the coach and manager of Marlboros.</p><p>Gregory was assistant to Father David Bauer, who coached St. Michael&rsquo;s College Majors in 1961, when they won the Memorial Cup. He progressed from there to Marlboros and took complete charge this season, when Leafs moved Buck Houle to Victoria, B.C., to run their Western League club there.</p><p>So Leafs know there&rsquo;s an abundant supply of youngsters on the way. Other pros off that 1963-64 Marlboro club include Rangers&rsquo; Rod Seiling and Mike Walton, Nick Harbaruk, Ray Dupont and goalie Gary Smith with Tulsa. In addition, Grant Moore is with Canada&rsquo;s national team.</p><p>But Leafs&rsquo; reserve strength goes a lot further. When the crisis developed, Tim Horton moved from defense, where he was an all-star last season, to right wing and did a productive job. Kent Douglas stepped in as a regular defenseman. And Jim Pappin, infrequently used all season, became a dependable first-stringer. Leafs Show Why They Rule Hockey World As Farmhands Come Through In Pinch Role

<div class="byline">PROUDFOOT</div><p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>The cause celebre in Toronto hockey these days concerns Eddie Shack&rsquo;s prolonged residence in the Leaf doghouse.</p><p>The team&rsquo;s troubles definitely are overshadowed by Coach Punch Imlach&rsquo;s refusal to use Shack and the rumors that Eddie the Entertainer is going to be traded.</p><p>Most persistent whisper is that Shack is to go to Boston Bruins, in exchange for Ab McDonald.</p><p>That turned out to be speculative guessing, worked out this way: Bruins were seeking to make a deal, Leafs obviously weren&rsquo;t using Shack and Bruins often had said they liked him. Presto&mdash;that&rsquo;s the deal, Except that it didn&rsquo;t work out.</p><p>But there&rsquo;s no doubt that Shack is in trouble with Leaf bosses, particularly Imlach. And you may take it for granted that Shack would have been gone long before this if it weren&rsquo;t for his immense popularity with Toronto fans.</p><p>Even Shack&rsquo;s most devoted admirers will admit Leafs own more accomplished players. But they like him for his tremendous drive and enthusiasm.</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re in the amusement business,&rdquo; says Harold Ballard, Leaf vice-president, &ldquo;and Shack is amusing. Some nights, he&rsquo;s the only entertainment we have to offer.&rdquo;</p><p>What Toronto viewers don&rsquo;t seem to realize is, first, that in spite of his cyclonic rushes (he does arouse his teammates) Shack costs his club goals with defensive errors and, second, that he is not nearly as effective in the out-of-town matches as he is at Maple Leaf Gardens before &ldquo;his&rdquo; people.</p><p>Imlach knows he&rsquo;s required to put on a show but, in the final analysis, he must win to protect his job. The obvious solution, therefore, is to keep Shack but use him only at rare intervals.</p><p>This produces deafening &ldquo;we want Shack&rdquo; roars in Maple Leafs Gardens but it does the team more good in the long run, Imlach figures.</p><p>Shack didn&rsquo;t help himself much by granting a very frank newspaper interview just when the trade rumors were at their peak.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve got the feeling I&rsquo;m no longer wanted,&rdquo; he was quoted as saying.</p><p>&ldquo;I know I&rsquo;ve cost the team a couple of goals,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;but Punch can&rsquo;t fault me on all goals. Some players are allowed to make mistakes. Others are not.</p><p>At 28, he has a few years left, Shack figured.</p><p>&ldquo;But not,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;by sitting on the bench. But Eddie’s Fan Popularity Keeps Him Off Hockey Block

<p>TORONTO, Ont.</p><p>Maple Leafs received a very pleasant surprise last week when Dickie Moore returned to Toronto, resumed workouts and rejoined the lineup in a very short time, coming up with a big game against Chicago.</p><p>Leafs, who paid $20,000 to acquire the rights to Moore last summer, had pretty well given up when he returned to his home in Montreal before Christmas. <div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div><p>DETROIT, Mich.</p><p>It&rsquo;s said that they&rsquo;re crying for Gordie Howe&rsquo;s scalp in Boston, that he caused the biggest fuss since the Boston Tea Party when he rammed Bruin rookie Bill Knibbs into the boards late in a Boston 5-2 victory over Detroit.</p><p>It&rsquo;s true that Howe sent Knibbs into the boards by the Bruin bench with heavy force&mdash;he drew a major for the violence with which Knibbs hit, a discretionary minor or major&mdash;but isn&rsquo;t it strange in these things how nothing is said of the other side?</p><p>In the same game, the Bruins&rsquo; Reg Fleming nearly twisted Wing goalie Roger Crozier&rsquo;s head off, pulling Crozier back over the crossbar and later spearing him, and the Wings&rsquo; Pit Martin was speared in the stomach, leaving a long red welt, by a Bruin defenseman.</p><p>It brought to mind two recent observations, the first by Windsor Star sports editor Jack Dulmage: &ldquo;When our side does it, it&rsquo;s aggressiveness, when the other side does it, it&rsquo;s dirty play,&rdquo; and Wing assistant general manager John Mitchell on the 5-foot-8, 150-pound, mild-mannered Crozier: &ldquo;Why Roger couldn&rsquo;t lick Mickey Mouse.&rdquo;</p><p>Meanwhile, Red Wing manager-coach Sid Abel said he will close the dressing room door in Toronto for the rest of the season to Toronto writers.</p><p>The ban was the outgrowth of the Ted Lindsay incident in which Toronto Globe and Mail writer Gordon Walker was in the Wing room after Lindsay was banished with a misconduct and game misconduct penalty and Lindsay reflected on the upcoming fines and National Hockey League president Clarence S. Wings Claim Bruins Also ‘Guilty’ Of ‘Dirty Play’ On Crozier, Martin

<p class="dropcap"><b><span>D</span>efensemen seldom receive the recognition they are deserving of in the National Hockey League and one such individual is rugged Tim Horton of the Maple Leafs.</b></p><p><b>The 35-year-old Horton has become the NHL&rsquo;s most prolific goal scorer among the backliners in recent weeks although he has achieved most of his success while doubling as a forward for the undermanned Maple Leafs.</b></p><p><b>Nevertheless, Horton has been scoring at a rapid rate and this week added two more&mdash;his 9th and 10th of the season&mdash;to help the Leafs put in another big week in the NHL race.</b></p><p><b>Horton&rsquo;s goals were no ordinary scores. They amounted to the first and second goals of the game and enabled the Leafs to beat the Boston Bruins 3-1. It wasn&rsquo;t the first time the fast-skating Cochrane, Ont., product had counted the game-winning goal. How Teams Rate In NHL

<p>CHICAGO, Ill.&mdash;</p><p>Dennis Hull continues to give the Hawks cause to thank Toronto&rsquo;s Punch Imlach for putting in a claim on Bobby&rsquo;s kid brother when Manager Tommy Ivan tried to send him to St. Louis.</p><p>Dennis came up with the winning goal in both games of a record home-and-home weekend series against the Red Wings. He now has six in 30 games.</p><p>Rookie defenseman Doug Jarrett has been playing extremely well under the pressure of a deep personal problem. The 20-year-old&rsquo;s baby son has been in Toronto hospital for several weeks with a serious kidney and bladder ailment. The child reportedly is out of danger, but more surgery is planned.</p><p>Pierre Pilote has launched a determined bid to regain his pre-eminence among NHL defenders in the second half of the season.</p><p>He entered the league&rsquo;s top 10 in scoring a few weeks ago without having scored a goal, but since he hit the charmed group the Hawks&rsquo; doughty little captain has been firing pucks behind goalies with the regularity of a forward.</p><p>He beat Roger Crozier with a pair of 30-feet blazers in a recent game.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<div class="byline">BY GEORGE TAYLOR</div><p>BALTIMORE, Md.&mdash;</p><p>Swede Ulf Sterner suddenly stumbled upon a snag along hockey&rsquo;s bumpy road to success.</p><p>Just when it appeared that Europe&rsquo;s first entry in pro hockey might make it all the way to the National League without breaking stride, Sterner&rsquo;s followers were surprised to find him benched in Baltimore.</p><p>And it was Clipper Coach Johnny Crawford, a guy who was singing the Swede&rsquo;s praises the loudest, who pulled the skates from under Ulf.</p><p>Sterner was benched as the Clippers scored a 3-1 victory over Rochester in Baltimore. His centre ice post was filled by veteran Harry Pidhirny who sparkled in the assignment, scoring a goal and an assist.</p><p>Commenting on the action, Crawford said:</p><p>&ldquo;I have not changed my mind about Sterner&rsquo;s ability. I still think he&rsquo;s got what it takes to play top brand hockey.</p><p>&ldquo;But, I felt his attitude left something to be desired that game. And, when you&rsquo;ve got someone like Pidhirny available to fill in, a coach doesn&rsquo;t have to think twice about yanking a player.&rdquo;</p><p>Sterner said he was not bitter about his &ldquo;set down.&rdquo; In the dressing room after the game he managed a smile and said in his best English: &ldquo;It looked like the team play better with the rookie on the bench.&rdquo;</p><p>Sterner&rsquo;s role on the sidelines isn&rsquo;t expected to last long. <div class="byline">BY SHEL FULLERTON</div><p>CLEVELAND, Ohio</p><p>In his ninth professional season, and in his third try at a regular American Hockey League berth, right winger Bob Courcy of the Cleveland Barons appears to have made the grade.</p><p>Courcy, who tried to stick twice with the Buffalo Bisons and once with the Quebec Aces in previous years, suddenly has blossomed into one of the more dangerous goal scorers in the AHL.</p><p>Off to a fast start this season, Courcy ran afoul of the injury jinx that has beset the Barons this year, sustaining a kidney injury when he crashed into the boards on one of the Barons&rsquo; eastern trips. Hospitalized for several days and out of action for six games, the 28-year-old Granby, Quebec, native came back all the way.</p><p>In the Barons&rsquo; losing streak that has reached eight straight games at this writing, Courcy has been the bright and shining light.</p><p>Clicking for the hat trick in a game at Rochester, all of his three scores coming in one period, Courcy powered seven goals past enemy netminders in four successive games.</p><p>Currently, he has clicked for 16 goals, 14 assists and 30 points, putting him three points ahead of his previous AHL high with Buffalo in the 1960-61 season, when he appeared in 67 games and wound up with a total of 27 points.</p><p>Courcy played 20 games for Buffalo the following season, collecting 10 points before moving on to Hull-Ottawa, and five points in 11 games with Quebec in the 1962-63 season.</p><p>Assigned to Omaha last year by the Montreal Canadiens, Courcy came up with 36 goals and 46 assists for 82 points in leading the Knights to a Central Professional League championship.</p><p>Courcy&rsquo;s transition to the AHL has been a gradual one, with much of his earlier professional career being spent in the Quebec and Eastern Professional Hockey Leagues.</p><p>Starting with Shawinigan Falls in 1956-57, he also played with Chicoutimi, Three Rivers and Sault Ste. Marie, in addition to two different sessions with Hull-Ottawa.</p><p>His best professional season came with the latter club in the 1959-60 season, when he rapped 46 goals and assisted on 56 others for a 102-point total in 70 games.</p><p>Only the centreman on his line, Joe Szura, leads Courcy among Baron scorers.</p><p>Injuries continue to plague the Barons, who are finding the going tough in face of all the adversities that have assailed them.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-01540/2196356-1-eng-US/f0012-012.jpg" title="f0012-01" width="266" height="454"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Bob Courcy</b></figcaption></div><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span>

American Hockey League Summaries

<div class="byline">BY JOHN TRAVERS</div><p>HERSHEY, Pa.</p><p>Centre Mike Nykoluk and his wingmates, Pete Conacher and Myron Stankiewicz, have given opponent American League goalies fits in the past several weeks.</p><p>The three veteran Hershey Bears&rsquo; forwards went through a seven game stretch with 15 goals and 24 assists for a whopping 39 points to their credit.</p><p>Their outstanding performance brought coach Frank Mathers&rsquo; crew out of a prolonged slump.</p><p>From Dec. 9 until Dec. 27 the Bears offense couldn&rsquo;t click and the club, dropping seven of nine games, lost an opportunity to gain ground on the Eastern Division leading Quebec Aces.</p><p>However, Nykoluk and his linemates started to click as of Dec. 30 and the team came on to win four of seven games and pull to within nine points of the Aces.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s just one of those things,&rdquo; explained Nykoluk. &ldquo;When the breaks start going your way the goals start coming. Stanky and Pete started to get the openings.&rdquo;</p><p>Between Conacher and Stankiewicz they combined for a dozen goals in the short stretch with each getting six. Nykoluk added the other three.</p><p>Defenseman Mike Mahoney, recalled from Omaha of the Central League when injuries hit the Bears&rsquo; backline corps, has turned in some fine hockey.</p><p>The burly six-footer hit for two goals and set up six others in his first 11 games.</p><p>&ldquo;As long as Mike continues his good play,&rdquo; said Mathers, &ldquo;he has a job with us. He&rsquo;s played well and it looks as though he wants to stick with us.&rdquo;</p><p>Mahoney had three previous tryouts with Hershey but couldn&rsquo;t stick.</p><p>Even his teammates have noticed the vast improvement in Mahoney&rsquo;s play.</p><p>&ldquo;I always felt Mike had the equipment to make the club,&rdquo; said one player, &ldquo;and it looks like he&rsquo;s finally found himself. He&rsquo;s a good skater. He can help us a lot if he keeps up the pace.&rdquo;</p><p><b>ICE CHIPS&mdash;</b>The Bears continue to draw big crowds and at the 20 game mark showed a 111,078 attendance mark, better than 5,000 ahead of last season when they set a 36-home game attendance of 214,753&hellip;Fourteen of the Bears are members of the Hershey Curling Club and several of them, including Ralph Keller and Howie Yanosik, are proficient at the sport. Nykoluk, Linemates Dazzle Opposing AHL Netminders With 15 Goals In 7 Games

<div class="byline">BY JOE GORDON</div><p>PITTSBURGH, Pa.&mdash;</p><p>In a season when defensemen have been at a premium for the Pittsburgh Hornets, Coach Vic Stasiuk is thankful for the presence of Pete Goegan. The tough veteran has been the only Hornet backliner to play in all the Wasps games through the first half of the season.</p><p>The 29-year-old Goegan has been the bulwark of the Pittsburgh defense, which at times this year has been glaringly weak. Coach Vic Stasiuk is high in his praise of the work turned in by Goegan. &ldquo;Without Peter, I hate to think what might have happened this year. With the injuries to Godfrey, Marcon and Erickson, he has done a fine job, game in and game out,&rdquo; commented the Hornet mentor.</p><p>Defensemen Marcon (13), Erickson (7) and Godfrey (6) have missed a total of 26 games between them. Godfrey&rsquo;s groin injury has been particularly annoying and bothers him even when he is able to play.</p><p>Goegan spent four full seasons and parts of three others in the National League during a nine year pro career which has seen him perform the past two seasons in the Steel City. Much of the credit for Pittsburgh&rsquo;s Western Division championship last year was attributed to a vastly improved defense of which Goegan was a key member.</p><p>This year the Hornets have fallen upon hard times but through it all Goegan has played his usual steady defense as well as being the Hornet policeman on the ice.</p><p>Never much of a scorer during his career, Goegan already has five goals this season and could be on his way to his most productive season. He scored 11 goals while playing with Edmonton (WHL) in the 1959-60 season. Goegan Gets Stasiuk Nod For Ice Play

Y.</p><p>In mechanics, an arbor (or arbour) is the principal spindle or axis which communicates motion to the rest of the machinery.</p><p>In hockey, Arbour is the principal spindle or axis which communicates impetus to the rest of the Rochester Americans.</p><p>Al Arbour doesn&rsquo;t score many goals or collect many assists&hellip;even for a defenseman&hellip;but if anybody on the well-balanced Amerk squad is the key, it is Arbour.</p><p>As Arbour goes, so go the Americans. And Rochester, it should be noted, has a spectacular 26-11-2 record at this writing. That should give some kind of indication as to how Mr. Arbour is performing.</p><p>The 32-year-old blueliner finally appears in line to shed his bridesmaid&rsquo;s role which has seen him finish a close second to first Marc Reaume and then to Ted Harris in the Eddie Shore Plaque voting for the American Hockey League&rsquo;s outstanding defenseman. Arbour has been an AHL All-Star first team selection in both his seasons with Rochester, and is a certainty to make it three in a row for the 1964-65 schedule.</p><p>The popular 6-foot, 189-pounder has more than his own job on the ice to think about this season.</p><p>When Joe Crozier signed as general manager in addition to coach of the Amerks last summer, he knew he would need somebody to help him. And Crozier knew who he wanted it to be&mdash;Al Arbour.</p><p>So Al was signed as assistant coach. He&rsquo;s had much to do with the fine morale of this veteran-studded Amerk squad, has handled the club during a number of practice sessions and is learning the business end of hockey under Crozier and publicity chief Dave Faunce.</p><p>Rochester hockey fans, who have had more than their share of crowd-pleasing rambuctious skaters&mdash;Red Armstrong, Reggie Fleming, Howie Young, Roger Cote, Murray Balfour and Don Cherry among others, also appreciate Arbour&rsquo;s quiet but effective method of frustrating opposing forwards.</p><p>Goalie Jerry Cheevers actually appreciates Arbour, and for an additional reason, too. Veteran Al Arbour Seen Key Figure In Americans’ Dash To Top Of Race

I.</p><p>The most pleasant surprise of the New Year for the Rhode Island Reds has been the rapid improvement of Robert &ldquo;Butch&rdquo; Barber, a 21-year-old youngster who finally has won a regular spot on the club&rsquo;s defense alignment.</p><p>Barber, a Montreal Canadiens&rsquo; prospect who was just out of junior hockey when he reported to the Reds last fall, didn&rsquo;t play much of a role with the Providence team during the first half of the season. Inexperience harbored him on the bench where he served as fifth defenseman.</p><p>However, a recent injury to regular Bob Blackburn forced coach Fern Flaman to realign his defense, and ever since Barber has been playing a major part in the Reds&rsquo; rejuvenation and drive for a playoff spot in the Eastern Division of the American Hockey League.</p><p>&ldquo;His progress has been just amazing,&rdquo; coach Flaman commented after using Barber as a regular for a few games. &ldquo;Butch has come a long way in just a short time and he&rsquo;s going to be a big help the rest of the season!&rdquo;</p><p>Barber, a clean-cut lad who has ambitions of becoming a bareback rider in professional rodeo this summer, has combined ability, patience and willingness to learn in his development as a regular with the Reds.</p><p>Ranked as the top defenseman in Western junior hockey with the Edmonton Oil Kings last year, Barber was drafted from Detroit by the Canadiens this summer and was assigned to the Reds in the hope that under Flaman&rsquo;s expert tutelage his talents would develop.</p><p>Inexperience held Barber back during the first half of the season. But Butch watched closely from the bench and was a willing student for Flaman, who imparted some of the techniques that once made him a great National League defenseman.</p><p>When Barber did get his opportunity several weeks ago, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound youngster made the most of it. Showing new maturity and confidence on defense, the rookie came up with some great games and displayed noticeable improvement with each outing.</p><p>&ldquo;This boy could be a great defenseman some day,&rsquo;&rsquo; Flaman said recently. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s got the spirit, the ability and he&rsquo;s willing to learn. <div class="byline">BY BILL LIBBY</div><p>LOS ANGELES, Calif.</p><p>The Los Angeles Blades are in trouble. Coach Alfie Pike is deeply disappointed in them and noticeably discouraged. The Blades had been contending with Vancouver for third place and had held the fourth and last playoff places most of the Western Hockey League season, but as this is written they have lost four in a row, have fallen five games below .500. have been passed by onrushing Victoria and are close to being passed by San Francisco and dropping into the cellar.</p><p>Victoria&rsquo;s defending pennant winners and San Francisco&rsquo;s defending playoff champs both rate above the Blades. Victoria impresses Pike, San Francisco does not. He says, &ldquo;I think Vancouver and San Francisco are the teams we have the best chance of beating out for the playoffs. But. if we don&rsquo;t make a move, we&rsquo;ll be out of it&rdquo;.</p><p>Pike has brought in experienced Jack McCartan to help out in goal, but has otherwise been stymied by efforts to bolster his club: &lsquo;&lsquo;You can&rsquo;t trade for or buy a good defenseman. Also a good checking forward. I offered one entire Blade line for an entire San Francisco line. Ours was a younger line, so I thought they&rsquo;d go for it. but they didn&rsquo;t. I guess we&rsquo;ll have to go with what we have.&rdquo;</p><p>Defense has been his main problem. Jack Evans and Camille Bedard are slowed-down veterans. Evans has played well. Bedard has not. Lloyd Haddon has played poorly. Normally one of pro hockey&rsquo;s highest-scoring defensemen, he has not been scoring, either. Howie Young has been very good and very bad. leads the league with 153 minutes in penalties and is in hot water again for missing a plane connection and a game. Swing-man Harley Hodgson is improved&rsquo; and has been better than some of the regulars.</p><p>Sophomore Jack Norris has had to handle more shots than any goal-tender in the league, but his fielding average is poor and so is his goals-against mark, 3.79. He makes the tough save, but muffs the easy one. He has not yet learned to protect the corners or handle breakaways. McCarten, a holdout most of the season before getting in five games with St. Louis, came in and played three tremendous games, but was beaten three times.</p><p>&ldquo;Norris hasn&rsquo;t been getting any help. I don&rsquo;t blame him.&rdquo; Pike says. &ldquo;But. he was getting down on himself and second-guessing himself. It&rsquo;s a tough job, so we brought in McCartan to ease the load on him. Our forwards have not been back-checking. No one has been hitting. Our biggest disappointment has been the failure of two of our defensemen to live up to expectations.</p><p>&ldquo;Haddon&rsquo;s failures on offense have affected and hurt his defense. He is still young, but he has not played as well as in the past by a long shot. Young hasn&rsquo;t come up to what I thought he would. His stupid penalties have hurt us repeatedly.&rdquo;</p><p>The Blades have given up the most power-play goals and are next-to-last in scoring power-play goals in the league. Most incredibly, they were recently scored on in four straight games when they had a power-play and the other club was short-handed. They gave up five shorthanded goals in one game, eight in four, two more in another game, within two weeks.</p><p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know what&rsquo;s wrong.&rdquo; Pike admits. &ldquo;The other teams are gambling, stealing the puck. We are getting caught. I&rsquo;ve tried different power-play combinations. seven different men on the point, nothing seems to help. I think we&rsquo;ve been scoring all right on our power-plays, but it&rsquo;s a disgrace to be scored on as we have been in these situations.&rdquo;</p><p>Marc Boileau and Gordon Haworth have sparked an effective penalty-killing group, but few of the forwards are playing both ends of the ice. The team is in the middle of the league in goals allowed and scored, but have given up the big goal more often than they&rsquo;ve been able to score it. Their offense has been unbalanced. Three men have carried the load. After 37 games. Norm Johnson had 18 goals and 54 points to lead the league. Brian Smith was tied for the league lead with 23 goals. Willie O&rsquo;Ree had 18 goals.</p><p>Leo Labine, presumably the team&rsquo;s best player, missed a dozen games with a sore elbow, has been dull since his return, slowing down Johnson and Smith on the first line. O&rsquo;Ree has been hot man on a cold line. No one hustles down to take advantage of the numerous openings he creates. The other forwards who have been digging have been shooting poorly.</p><p>Something has to be done soon. Since coming into the league four seasons back, the Blades have remained a step behind archrival San Francisco. They averaged 6,983 in their first 16 home games this season to surpass last season&rsquo;s 6,674 mark at the same point. How WHL Teams Rate

<div class="byline">&#x2014;By Bill Libby</div><p>LOS ANGELES, Calif.</p><p>Howie Young cannot avoid controversy. Ask the other players in the league and you&rsquo;re surprised by their deep respect for him. His toughness and ability impress them more than his bad reputation and erratic ways. Seattle&rsquo;s Jean Marie Cossette says, &ldquo;Young is real dangerous. No one, not even he, knows what he might do next.&rdquo; Recently, he checked Seattle&rsquo;s Larry Zeidel in the neck with his knees. And Zeidel was standing up at the time. Larry, who&rsquo;s pulled a few funny tricks of his own, was so startled he didn&rsquo;t even retaliate. A split-second later, the Blades scored a big goal which was nullified by the penalty called on Young.</p><p>&ldquo;He&rsquo;s killing us with his stupid penalties,&rdquo; Los Angeles coach Alfie Pike stormed the next game. He benched Young and ignored the unison chant of the LA fans, &ldquo;We want Howie.&rdquo; Pike sneered, &ldquo;This is one game he didn&rsquo;t hurt me. I kept him next to me on the bench.&rdquo; Young shrugged, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not paid to think.&rdquo;</p><p>Until recently, Young was on a spurt of brilliant hockey, playing as well as any defenseman in the league. Then he backslid, getting caught up ice, lunging into penalties at the strangest times. One foeish Columbia, Larry played junior for Edmonton in the Detroit chain, snorts, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s harder to play with.&rdquo; Others are hustling less and playing worse, but Young is always in the spotlight. Pike makes no bones about being disappointed in him. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s going to have to make up his mind to give an all-out effort, or hang &rsquo;em up.&rdquo;</p><p>The Blades and San Francisco&rsquo;s Charley Burns may have set all-pro records recently. The Blades gave up shorthanded goals in four straight games, five in one game, three to Burns. A remarkable feat, good and bad&hellip;San Francisco boss Bud Poile says, &ldquo;You can&rsquo;t buy or trade for a good defenseman anywhere in pro hockey these days. A shortage of qualified defensemen is the current cycle.&rdquo;&hellip;Some of SF&rsquo;s best checking lately has been by a forward, penalty killer Ray Cyr&hellip;Portland defense Connie Madigan has scored five goals, four against LA, for whom he played last season&hellip;Portland forward Andy Hebenton has 15 goals, but only five at home, and he recently scored for the first time in eight weeks at home.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-01509/2196862-1-eng-US/f0015-012.jpg" title="f0015-01" width="286" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Howie Young</b></figcaption></div><p>Seattle, leading the league since the beginning of the season, tailed off sharply during a mid-season road swing recently. It has been caught up in a fight for first with Portland. Seattle coach Keith Allen says, &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve tailed off. We have more good scorers than ever, but most of them are not scoring. We&rsquo;re outshooting our opponents in most of our games but we&rsquo;re not scoring. We have only one man, Guyle Fielder, in the first 10 in points scored in the league, and only two others, Bill MacFarland and Jean Marie Cossette, in the first 20. We&rsquo;ve scored fewer goals than any team in the league. I look for some fellows like Ray Kinasewich, to pick up in the second half.&rdquo;</p><p>Allen continued, &ldquo;Defense has carried our club. Goalie Jimmy McLeod has been outstanding all along, even better than I expected, and has to be considered for MVP honors. But, lately, our defense corps has been limping. We&rsquo;ve had so many men hurt, we couldn&rsquo;t rest those who could limp out there. We lost our top veteran Gordy Sinclair for some weeks with an eye injury. He was just getting into top stride, now he&rsquo;s got to get back in shape. Mo Martin was out for awhile. Larry Zeidel and Don Ward have been pretty good. Game in and game out, Larry Hale has been our most consistent defenseman.&rdquo;</p><p>Hale is something of a Cinderella story. Out of Penticton in Brit-Columbia, Larry played junior for Edmonton in the Detroit chain, went to camp with the Red Wings in 1962, was dropped by them. Physically thin (6-1 and 180 pounds now) and a poor skater, he did not impress them. &ldquo;They wouldn&rsquo;t even let me try out with one of their farm teams,&rdquo; the shy, boyish 22-year-old Hale grins ruefully. &ldquo;I was pretty discouraged and thought maybe I should give it up.&rdquo; The Minneapolis amateur team in the International League called him on the telephone and he played for them that season. Seattle signed him to a pro contract and he made the club as a rookie last season.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-02451/2196855-1-eng-US/f0015-022.jpg" title="f0015-02" width="276" height="426"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Guyle Fielder</b></figcaption></div><p>He&rsquo;s deceptive&mdash;you have to give him a second look&mdash;but he&rsquo;s been an effective sophomore this campaign. He says, &ldquo;The good start the team got, helped. Confidence is half the battle, I sure do feel better about hockey now. The majors? That&rsquo;s a long way off. I don&rsquo;t even think about it.&rdquo;</p><p>Allen says, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s possible he&rsquo;ll go all the way. He could use 10 or more pounds and his skating has to improve some. He&rsquo;s not overly aggressive, but he&rsquo;s not shy. He checks well and has had some pretty good fights. He&rsquo;s improving his strong points. He makes very few mistakes for a kid of his experience, he&rsquo;s very adept at blocking shots, he passes well. I had a lot of confidence in him, but he&rsquo;s playing better than I thought he would.&rdquo; Seattle&rsquo;s Gerry Brisson says, &ldquo;Hale is the most improved player in the league.&rdquo;</p><p>Businessman Bob Breidtbard is reportedly $2.5 million short of the $4 million he needed to build the planned 13,000-seat coliseum in San Diego. He flew to Chicago in a longshot bid to raise money. There is no chance the arena can be ready for the city&rsquo;s entrance into the WHL next season, and it may be out entirely. Phoenix, Arizona, which is building an 11,000-seat arena, may step in&hellip;At 34, Larry Popein is still the fastest and best skater Vancouver has, as recent time trials, with and without the puck, proved. Dunc McCallum was the fastest defenseman. MARIE, Ont.</p><p>North Bay Trappers&rsquo; one-two punch of Marty Reynolds and Randy Prior continue to climb in the individual scoring race, yet coach Howie Parker is a highly discouraged figure these days.</p><p>Despite the almost unbelievable antics of Reynolds and Prior, the once-proud Trappers have been humbled to the point where both the Sault Greyhounds and Espanola Eagles have suddenly become serious threats for top honors in the Northern Ontario Junior &lsquo;A&rsquo; circuit.</p><p>When the Greyhounds outhustled North Bay 7-5 here last weekend, it marked the fourth straight loss for Parkers pack. They have yet to win themselves a ball game in 1965.</p><p>Espanola, meanwhile, drubbed Garson Native Sons 7-2 and as a result share the lead with the Trappers. They have each registered 33 points with 16 wins and a tie, but the Eagles boast three games in hand. The Sault has also won 16 games and rank a close third with 32 points.</p><p>Reynolds snapped an NOHA record for most assists in a single season here when he collected set-up number 51. Terry Black, a member of the 1962-63 Garson Native Sons, established the old mark of 50.</p><p>Prior, an industries 17-year-old rightwinger, now has fired 44 goals for the Trappers in 27 games. The youngster has two more years of junior eligibility and seems destined for future stardom in professional ranks. North Bay Duo Flies High But Trapper Coach Unhappy

LOUIS, Mo.&mdash;</p><p>Gus Kyle coach of the St. Louis Braves was one man happy to wind up 1964 and look ahead to a brighter future for his club in 1965. In the cellar spot of the Central Pro League, Kyle could only call the first half of the schedule a &ldquo;nightmare with so many things happening to us. Maybe now our bad luck is all over and done with for this schedule and we can go ahead.&rdquo;</p><p>Kyle had great praise for the fans whom he described as &ldquo;wonderful to us considering the things that had happened. But those hockey enthusiasts knew we were struggling and have tried to ease our troubles by staying loyal to us.&rdquo;</p><p>After dropping seven straight contests and plummeting into the loop basement. Braves broke their streak with a pair of ties against Memphis and Tulsa and as Kyle says, &ldquo;Even a tie was a boost for us as we just had to break the slump.&rdquo;</p><p>Last fall, Kyle had looked forward to receiving Fred Stanfield, Ray Cullen and Paul Popeil, all young talent with the Chicago Black Hawks&rsquo; organization. But Stanfield won a berth with the National Hockey League club and Buffalo, Chicago&rsquo;s American League farm team, made successful bids for Cullen and Popeil.</p><p>Next Frank Golembrosky, a promising junior graduate suffered a bad ankle break in the opening game and was through for the season. Forwards Ken Gustafson, Chuck Kelly, Larry Mickey and Bob Cunningham, came up with injuries that kept them on the sidelines for an indefinite period.</p><p>At Christmas, defenseman Jack Hendrickson left the team on his own and was suspended.</p><p>But Kyle faced the New Year with Harry Ottenbriet moving in from Providence via Los Angeles, and Ray LaRose on loan from Quebec Aces.</p><p>Al &ldquo;Boom Boom&rdquo; Caron and Cunningham have been Braves&rsquo; most consistent forwards this season with Caron firing 28 goals in his first 31 games and Cunningham coming through with 14 tallies and 21 assists in the same number of outings.</p><p>&ldquo;We want a playoff berth,&rdquo; says Kyle; &ldquo;and we are going all-out to battle for one.&rdquo;</p><p><b>MEMPHIS</b>&mdash;Memphis Wings are fully enjoying the attention paid to them by their home fans in the Mid-South Coliseum and attendance reached a new mark for a single game when 6,700 turned out to see them battle the Minneapolis Bruins to a 1-1 deadlock.</p><p>Dennis Kassian has been following the lead of Norm Beaudin and veteran pro stylists John MacMillan and Andre Pronovost. Billy Carter is starting to get untracked after working only sparingly with Seattle in the Western League. Keith Walsh is improving as a defenseman and acting as a setup man for his team&rsquo;s goals drawing 14 assists in the club&rsquo;s first 23 outings.</p><p><b>ST. PAUL</b>&mdash;The Rangers are settling their lineup for the second half of the campaign. The New York Rangers borrowed Mel Pearson for a brief stint when hit with injuries but he returned to join Barrie Ross, Paul Andrea, Jim Johnson and Marc Dufour, their most consistent threat up front. The trio rammed home 68 goals before the season&rsquo;s halfway mark.</p><p>Goalkeeper Marcel Pelletier, last season&rsquo;s Central League AllStar netminder while playing with the Rangers, has returned to back up rookie Wayne Rutledge.</p><p><b>OMAHA</b>&mdash;Playing-coach Bill McCreary is proving to be a capable mentor judging by the way he kept his club in contention while losing three players from his regular lineup. Goalie Ernie Wakely went to Cleveland and captain Norm Dennis and Mike Mahoney were assigned to Hershey of the American League by the parent Montreal Canadiens.</p><p>Gary Bauman, a rookie net-minder who graduated from the Michigan Institute of Technology last May took over the twine-tending chores and the rest of the team started playing a tighter game.</p><p><b>TULSA</b>&mdash;As the Oilers tussle for the top rung in the standing, the work of veterans goalie Don Simmons, defenseman Marc Reaume and forward Tom McCarthy has been outstanding. <div class="byline">BY HARVEY POLLACK</div><p>NASHVILLE, Tenn.&mdash;</p><p>If a turning point in the Eastern Hockey League&rsquo;s Southern Division race can be pinpointed, attention must be focused on the way the pace setting Nashville Dixie Flyers have been able to handle the four-time division kings, the Greensboro Generals.</p><p>In the early seasonal going, it appeared Greensboro would again outdistance all opposition. This viewpoint was enhanced when the Gens beat the Flyers in their first two meetings. Then on Nov. 21 at Nashville, coach John McLellan had a pre-game talk with his men in which he stressed that the only way his club could beat out Greensboro was to beat the Generals in their head-to-head combat.</p><p>The Flyers took this advice and trampled the Generals, 12-3, that night and subsequently have won five straight from Greensboro and in the process have taken over the division lead.</p><p>As far as Nashville is concerned, they are in first place to stay and no one is going to catch them. The Flyers are hungry for the title and McLellan has cautioned his charges that a let down could be fatal.</p><p>&ldquo;We are happy and thankful to be in first place,&rdquo; John said, &ldquo;but our guys realize that the race is far from over and that we cannot lessen our pace if we expect to take the title.&rdquo;</p><p>McLellan says his club is blessed with terrific team morale, and &ldquo;it fights for everything and that&rsquo;s why the club is succeeding. No task is too tough for this team and the boys enter every game, home or away, confident that they will win. That&rsquo;s why they are doing so well and that&rsquo;s why we think no one will catch us.&rdquo;</p><p><b>NASHVILLE:</b> Dusty Blair back after foot injury sidelined him. Team won nine straight. Don Snider had hat trick versus Jersey. Marv Edwards&rsquo; third shutout squelched Greensboro and helped his chances of keeping goals allowed average under three.</p><p><b>GREENSBORO:</b> Gens&rsquo; slump included six losses in 9 games. Club tied Knights after blowing 6-3 lead that had coach Ron Spong upset. Ron Muir and DiBerardino have been scoring well while Garry Sharp was in slump. Don Davidson&rsquo;s elbow acting up again and Jacques Monette and Mike Draper also ailing. Spong, who may return to active duty, has been shaking up lines.</p><p><b>NEW YORK:</b> Steve Brklacich confident his Rovers can catch Jersey or Jets for playoff berth. Wally Chase tops in club scoring. Rovers&rsquo; tied at Clinton, broke Comets winning streak at home this year. Team has been doing well on road of late. Trevor Fahey, Jim Murray, Jean Lafond and Chase only men to play every game this season. Fahey went up to parent N.Y. <div class="byline">BY BOB REED</div><p>FORT WAYNE, Ind.&mdash;</p><p>Ken Ullyot, coach and general manager of the Komets, has been one of the most outspoken coaches in the International Hockey League with regard to the failure to call penalty shots when there is a flagrant foul on the player going in for a goal on a breakaway.</p><p>&ldquo;What&rsquo;s the use of having a rule if nobody&rsquo;s going to pay any attention to it?&rdquo; argued Ullyot. &ldquo;I think the fans would get a great thrill out of this play, regardless of whether the shot is made or missed.&rdquo;</p><p>So, what happens? The first penalty shot of the season is called against Ullyot&rsquo;s club. But it wasn&rsquo;t the kind of play he was referring to. This one was called on Komet defenseman Lionel Repka when he fell upon the puck inside the goal crease. Pat Ginnel made the goal on the free shot to help a 5-3 victory.</p><p>Earlier in the season in a game against Fort Huron Komet Merv Dubchek was twice fouled from behind on solo dashes and Ullyot cried loundly for penalty shots in vain.</p><p>Only the next night after the call in Des Moines a second penalty shot was called at Muskegon when the Zephyrs&rsquo; Yvan Chasle was hauled down from behind on a breakaway and he was awarded a free shot, which could have tied the game with only 13 seconds remaining. But Goalie Norm Jacques stood fast and blocked the shot.</p><p><b>TOLEDO</b>&mdash;The Blades scored eight straight goals to whip Dayton 8-4 after the Gems took a 3-0 lead. Defenseman Cal Lackey notched his first goal of the season on a long 40-footer&hellip;Lackey and Port Hurons Bill LeCaine were fined $25 each and suspended two games for a stick fight&hellip;Greg Jablonski had a hat trick and Goalie Glenn Ramsay was only 23 seconds from his second shutout in beating Dayton, 7-1 &hellip; Don Westbrook, back on defense, was playing well.</p><p><b>DAYTON</b>&mdash;Guy Trottier had the hat trick in a 6-5 win over Muskegon&hellip;The Gems bought defenseman George Boychuk from Port Huron and Coach Warren Back moved up to the forward line&hellip;Goalie Pat Rupp was purchased from Jersey of the Eastern League to spell Ludger Doucet&hellip;The Gems nosed out Muskegon for their eighth victory in 38 starts before 3,579 fans&hellip;The Gems averaged 2,887 in 18 home games&hellip;Sid Garant took scoring lead with 41 points.</p><p><b>MUSKEGON</b>&mdash;The Zephyrs scored three goals in the last period to beat Dayton, 5-2&hellip;G.M. Ullyot’s Plea For More Penalty Shots Gets Results But Wrong Kind As Ginnell Helps Sink His Komets

<div class="byline">BY STANLEY BRINK</div><p>BOSTON, Mass.&mdash;</p><p>If current signs do not evolve into a mirage, Northeastern University is inching along to its first blue ribbon season since hockey came to the Huntington Avenue campus back in 1929.</p><p>In the first 14 games Northeastern had a 10-4 stand and in the process tagged 37 goals against 27. Between them Wing Larry Bone of Newmarket, Ontario and Bill Seabury, centre, collected 27 with Bone getting 14.</p><p>Gary Thornton of South Porcupine, Ontario, had a 2.6 goals against average for 10 games. His backup man. Gus Capizzo, was less efficient by a trifle.</p><p>All this in the face of losing two by injury who had been originally posted for duty on the first two lines. Captain and first line left wing Neil McPhee suffered a broken left arm. His replacement, Dean McGranahan, was elevated from the third line and promptly received a back injury. Each was ruled out for the season.</p><p>Coach James L. Bell revised the lineup and the changes brought results. Three sophomores ramrod the defense, Don Turcotte and Ronald Jeannault from Kapuskasing, Ontario, and Monte Christie from Toronto. Jeannault and Turcotte take the first turn.</p><h2><b>NORWICH ACE HOT</b></h2><p>Northfield, Vermont&mdash;Robert Priestly of Norwich University is making his move to lead the second division of the Eastern College Athletic Conference in scoring with nine goals in 11 points for seven games. Bob Bradley of Williams College tied with him in points but had two goals less.</p><p>Exira sessions featured the Lake Placid tournament won by Norwich University. Norwich had to go two to beat Colby 5-4 opening night while Middlebury took Bowdoin 4-3 in one. The second and final round was the easiest for Norwich. The Cadets downed Middlebury, 5-2 after Bowdoin riddled Colby, 6-3.</p><h2><b>WESTERNERS IMPRESS</b></h2><p>Duluth, Minnesota.&mdash;University of Minnesota-Duluth left a decided impression during the fourteenth annual Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute annual holiday tournament. Duluth scored 29 goals in three games by going through Colgate, 10-3, McGill, 10-1, and Rensselaer, 9-2. <div class="byline">BY JACK GATECLIFF</div><p>NIAGARA FALLS, Ont.</p><p>When the coach of the year is selected in the Ontario Association this season two trophies instead of the usual one may be required.</p><p>Perhaps the only team in organized hockey with a platoon type of coaching, Niagara Falls Flyers have made the system pay off with a solid string of successes and first place in the junior A circuit.</p><p>The idea was actually forced upon the Falls club because of the tremendous number of Sunday games now being played.</p><p>Hap Emms, head coach, manager and owner of the Flyers, has long opposed the playing of Sunday hockey in junior A. In fact he carries such strong convictions that he refuses to attend Sabbath games even when his own club is involved.</p><p>Fortunately he has a competent assistant in the person of Bill Long and it has been Long&rsquo;s job to look after the coaching duties the past six years when Emms makes himself unavailable.</p><p>This year the Flyers have 18 Sunday games, all on the road which means that Emms will miss approximately one-third of his club&rsquo;s schedule.</p><p>Realizing this the veteran coach and one-time National Hockey League player with New York Americans has turned more and more of the responsibility over to Long and the latter has even handled the majority of the games on weekdays while Hap looks on from a vantage point in the stands.</p><p>However, in practices both men are on the ice offering instructions and advice and most observers feel that the Flyers not only have the most coaching but probably the best.</p><p>Emms has always been convinced that team balance is more important than individual stars and the result of his belief is evident in this year&rsquo;s club.</p><p>In fourth place Dec. 8 when they dropped a 6-2 decision to St. Catharines Black Hawks, the Flyers moved to the top with a 12-game undefeated streak which included 10 wins and two ties.</p><p>They don&rsquo;t have a single player among the league&rsquo;s first 10 points scorers but have three even lines, two solid sets of defensemen and two capable goaltenders in the persons of Quebec-born Bernie Parent and Doug Favell from neighboring St. Catharines, Ont.</p><p>A typical example of their overall strength was the Flyers&rsquo; 7-5 win over Oshawa Generals in Oshawa.</p><p>Seven players shared the seven goals with each line scoring twice and defenseman Gilles Marotte counting a single.</p><p>&ldquo;I honestly couldn&rsquo;t tell you which is my first line,&rdquo; said Emms this week. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got Ted Debrody centering Ted Snell and Brian Bradley; Rosaire Paiement between Don Marcotte and Jean Pronovost; Derek Sanderson with Jim Lorentz and Bill Goldsworthy. One game the Snell line looks the best, the next it may be Sanderson&rsquo;s, then another time Paiement. But I like it like that. Keeps everyone on their toes.&rdquo; Goldsworthy recently was called up to the NHL by the Parent Boston Bruins to fill in for the injured players.</p><p>It not only keeps all the Flyers sharp but it also keeps the opposition on the defensive.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not the number of goals the Flyers score but how they go about it,&rdquo; says Jim Gregory, coach of the Toronto Marlboros who were in first place before the recent Niagara Falls surge. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s no use using a checking line against one of their units because you may stop one but the other two will break out.&rdquo;</p><p>One of the keys to the Niagara Falls rise is their close attention to playing their positions and the tight defensive work which results.</p><p>Although in first place among the eight teams, the Flyers are actually sixth in total goals scored.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0019-01275/2197443-1-eng-US/f0019-012.jpg" title="f0019-01" width="286" height="436"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Bill Goldsworthy</b></figcaption></div><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span>

<p>TORONTO, Ont.</p><p>In the OHA individual scoring race Ken Hodge continued his torrid pace despite the continued slump of the St. Catharines Hawks.</p><p>The St. Catharines winger added 10 points (five goals, five assists) during the Hawks&rsquo; 14-goal barrage against Kitchener and moved to within eight points of first place Andre Lacroix of Peterborough.</p><p>Hodge leads in actual goals scored with 37 and has 34 assists for 71 points. Lacroix had a relatively slow week with six points and now has 79 points on 27 goals and 52 assists.</p><p>Rookie Mike Corrigan of Toronto Marlboros is third with 67 points and his linemate Paul Laurent fourth with 66.</p><p>Other players with 60 or more are Danny Grant of Peterborough 61 points and Brit Selby of Toronto Marlboros 60.</p><p>Bernie Parent of Niagara Falls continues to pace the regular goaltenders with a 2.43 goals against average in 19 games.
