Veteran Red Kelly Thrives On Work, Senator’ Sets Example For Leafs
TORONTO, Ont.— It’s been a trying year for members of Canada’s Parliament. And it’s been a particularly hectic time for Red Kelly, the honorable representative from York West. While carrying out his duties as a backbencher on the government side of the House of Commons, he’s been struggling to maintain first-string status with Toronto Maple Leafs, whose authority is also under constant attack. A political greenhorn, Kelly is a hockey greybeard at 37. He is in his 18th NHL season surpassed only by Gordie Howe and Bill Gadsby, who are still active. It’s surprising, therefore, to note that The Senator, as his teammates call him, is Leafs’ fourth highest scorer.
