Garry Sharp Ties Gens’ Standard For Hat Tricks
GREENSBORO, N.C.— Garry Sharp is a virtual cinch to break that hat trick record of five for the Greensboro club. He tied the club mark in his first 30 games, and thus had more than half the log to come up with another one. His feat tied the standard first set by Les Lilley in 1962, matched by Bobby Boucher and Sharp in 1963 and then by Don Davidson last year. Sharp’s position atop the league scoring race is enhanced by his ability to stay out of the penalty box. He spent just two minutes there in the 30 games.…

Not This Year Say Leafs, Canadiens’ Officials
TORONTO. Ont. Russia’s national hockey team wants to play a Na tional Hockey League club, and Sam Pollock of the Montreal Canadiens says it’s a good idea—“but not this year.” Russian coach Anatoli Tarasov at a press conference in Winnipeg said that if an NHL team invited the Russians to play them today “we’d play the game tomorrow.” Tarasov stressed that the Russians are interested only in playing an NHL club, not minor league pro teams such as the Quebec Aces or Rochester Americans. “We had always been under the impression the Russians weren’t interested in playing a National League team. We only learned otherwise some 10 days before Russia started this current tour,” said GM Pollock. “It’s too late to do anything about a game this year, because of our schedule. But we’d certainly…

LOS ANGELES, Calif. San Francisco, playoff champion of the Western Hockey League the last two seasons may be ready to make its move up from near the cellar this season. After being unable to win as many as two games in a row in the first third of the season, the Seals recently won three straight. Coach Bud Poile’s team put on an impressive display of strength when it scored seven goals in the third period to topple visiting Vancouver 8-5. Dispossessed coach Nick Mickoski, who is playing enormously well under uncomfortable circumstances, scored two of those goals.
