Fort Wayne Komets Draw Record 8,100 To Opener
FORT WAYNE, Ind.— When Fort Wayne’s Komets drew a capacity crowd of 8,013 for last year’s International Hockey Lea-gue opener, it was believed they had set a mark that that could not be surpassed here or elswhere in the league. However, by adding some extra seats around the corners of Memorial Coliseum—locations that were declared to be good vantage points—the local hockey club was able to accommodate 8,100 fans for this year’s opener, a record here and believed to be an all-time IHL mark. An undetermined number was turned away, as they were last year. Two years ago the Komets drew 6,845 for the opener, yielding the attendance mark to Omaha’s 7,331. • CHICAGO—THE BLACK HAWKS copied Lyndon Johnson’s 2-1 majority over Barry Goldwater in their Election Night win over the New York Rangers here…The Hawks were fortunate to win this, however, as the Rangers outshot them and generally played a sounder game…Matt Ravlich, playing his first game as a Hawk, was a sensation throughout and had the fans cheering his every move towards the end of the contest…Ravlich is replacing the injured Doug Mohns who watched the game beside us in the Chicago pressbox…Mohns has a broken bone in his foot and may be sidelined for three or more weeks…Denis DeJordy, Chicago’s No. 2 goalie behind Glenn Hall, also witnessed the game from the pressbox and Denis was loud in his praise of Marcel Paille in the Ranger nets.
