Chicago, Montreal Stars Sweep NHL Awards

Beliveau Picks Off Hart As MVP Pilote, Wharram Grab Trophies MONTREAL. Que. Members of the Chicago Black Hawks and Montreal Canadiens went home for the off-season with bulging pockets as the result of sweeping the National Hockey League’s individual player awards. Jean Beliveau of the Montreal Canadiens plucked the NHL’s big player prize, the Hart Trophy, as the league’s most valuable player. Bobby Hull of the Black Hawks was second in the voting. Jacques Laperriere, the big, exciting Montreal defenseman, won rookie-of-the-year honors and the Calder Cup and two of his teammates, John Ferguson and Terry Harper, finished second and third behind him. Ken Wharram of the Hawks swept to the Lady Byng Trophy while Wharram’s Chicago teammate. Pierre Pilote’again won the nod as the league’s best defenseman in the Norris Trophy voting. In the official…

(As Seen In Toronto Daily Star) TORONTO. Ont. — In all the history of Canadian I junior hoc-! key, probably no team; ever so completely dominated the scene as this year’s Toronto Marlboros. Even the oldest hockey men. many of whom hold out for the talents of the “good old days,” are forced to admit Marlies are at least as good as the best previous teams. Marlies completed the pic-ture by overwhelming the dis-appointing Edmonton Oil Kings to win the Memorial Cup in four straight games. The final series a game won 7-2 by the Dukes, so typical of Marlboros. They started slowly against the plucky Oil Kings and held only a 3-2 lead after two periods. Leader Says WHL To Stay Intact With Denver Only Question Mark SEATTLE, Wash. — Western Hockey League President countered reports that his circuit would, break up and i become’big. time-by announcing that the six teams that finished last season would start the 1964-65 campaign. Leader said that the same six cities — Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland. Vancouver, Seattle and Denver — would be; in the fold for next year. The WHL was confident the: Denver Invaders, last season’s league schedule champions,’ would be ready for the firing line in early October. The Invaders were given six weeks in which to promote a 2,000 season ticket sale to meet league requirements.
