Bubble Bursts For Rangers As Celebrated Summer Swap Fails Club For Playoffs
NEW YORK, N. Y. The Rangers’ bubble, inflated last summer with the signing of Jacques Plante, officially burst eight months later when the Blues settled uncomfortably into fifth place, for another year. That the Rangers’ great expectations turned into late season frustrations proved a keen disappointment to architects of the Blue-shirt machine. Assembled last October, the Rangers were pronounced the best New York club in years by coach Red Sullivan, who was seconded by other members of the high command. Fifth place was virtually unthinkable. The chief sources of optimism were goalie Plante and centers Don Marshall and Phil Goyette obtained in the celebrated trade that was thought might sink the Canadiens. Redoubtables such as Andy Bathgate, Camille Henry, and Rod Gilbert were expected to provide the goals while Harry Howell, Doug Harvey and…
PASSING THE PUCK
NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS to the Chicago Black Hawks during the final week of the schedule, this season has to go down as their greatest in history … The club has already set a record for most victories by a Chicago team, and Stan Mikita has bettered the ton Hawk record for most points in a season of 84. Stan already has 87 and Bobby Hull, currently with 83, should also better this record … A new record for penalty minutes has been set (also a league record) … All-Star right winger Kenny Charam with 38 goals has a good chance to end the season with 40, exactly twice as many as he scored last season … The Hawks could conceivably place five men on the First All-Star Team and…
Canucks Add Top Farmhands Roberts, Maniago To Club
MONTREAL, Que. — Two new faces have appeared in the Canadiens’ camp, recently, and one of them has already begun to see action. Jim Roberts, 23-year-old defenseman who also doubles as a forward, has been used in a penalty-killing role by Canucks over the past 10 games. The other recruit, Cesare Maniago, is on hand as a standby goalie. Roberts made his debut on Feb. 20th, and three nights later collected his first N.H L. point. He assisted on a Beliveau goal, in a 3-1 victory over Chicago. He came to Canadiens from Cleveland of the AHL, where he had played briefly. Prior to that, he was team captain of the Omaha Knights of the Central Pro Hockey League. A chunky 185-pounder, Roberts is looked upon as a good checker, and plans call for…
U.S. Fans To See Cup Playoffs As NHL Tests Closed Circuit TV
BOSTON, Mass. — New England hockey fans will have an opportunity of watching the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring for the first time since 1959, but without the Bruins. Playoff games, which will have either the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs (or both) as participants will be shown at Boston Garden on closed circuit television. The same Eidophore projection process which was used for the Cassius Clay-Sonny Liston fight will be employed. The Clay-Liston fight sold out the Garden at its television capacity of just under 12,000 customers, an estimated several thousand more customers being turned away. Whether or not one or more Stanley Cup rounds, not involving the Bruins, will have similar customer appeal is something which Walter Brown does not know. But the president of the Bruins and the Boston Garden Corporation is…
