Cournoyer, Orr Unanimous Selections Among All-Stars; Marlies Draw 1st Team Blank
ST. CARTHARINES, Ont. A high-scoring right winger with Montreal Canadiens and a 15-year-old defence sensation with Oshawa Generals were the only unanimous choices as the 1963-64 Ontario Hockey Association junior A all-star team was announced this week. Yvan Cournoyer, who is slated to move directly into the National Hockey League with the parent Canadiens this year topped the circuit in actual goals scored with 63 and was rewarded for his efforts by being placed at right wing by seven of the eight coaches. Only his coach, Yves Nadon, who could not vote for his own players, didn’t list Cournoyer on his ballot. The other unanimous choice, Bobby Orr of Oshawa, may be a few years before joining the team which owns his pro rights, the Boston Bruins, but at the moment he appears to…

Canucks Add Top Farmhands Roberts, Maniago To Club
MONTREAL, Que. — Two new faces have appeared in the Canadiens’ camp, recently, and one of them has already begun to see action. Jim Roberts, 23-year-old defenseman who also doubles as a forward, has been used in a penalty-killing role by Canucks over the past 10 games. The other recruit, Cesare Maniago, is on hand as a standby goalie. Roberts made his debut on Feb. 20th, and three nights later collected his first N.H L. point. He assisted on a Beliveau goal, in a 3-1 victory over Chicago. He came to Canadiens from Cleveland of the AHL, where he had played briefly. Prior to that, he was team captain of the Omaha Knights of the Central Pro Hockey League. A chunky 185-pounder, Roberts is looked upon as a good checker, and plans call for…

Bubble Bursts For Rangers As Celebrated Summer Swap Fails Club For Playoffs
NEW YORK, N. Y. The Rangers’ bubble, inflated last summer with the signing of Jacques Plante, officially burst eight months later when the Blues settled uncomfortably into fifth place, for another year. That the Rangers’ great expectations turned into late season frustrations proved a keen disappointment to architects of the Blue-shirt machine. Assembled last October, the Rangers were pronounced the best New York club in years by coach Red Sullivan, who was seconded by other members of the high command. Fifth place was virtually unthinkable. The chief sources of optimism were goalie Plante and centers Don Marshall and Phil Goyette obtained in the celebrated trade that was thought might sink the Canadiens. Redoubtables such as Andy Bathgate, Camille Henry, and Rod Gilbert were expected to provide the goals while Harry Howell, Doug Harvey and…

Dick Gamble Draws First Penalty In 58 Games
ROCHESTER, NY. — It hardly ever fails. Laud an athlete and he usually manages to go into a slump, or, conversely, pan a sports performer and he always seems to quickly become a hero and the writer obviously is a bum for not having recognized inert greatnesss. Dick Gamble, veteran Rochester Americans left winger, is one who must hope nobody writes too many nice things about him. He couldn’t stand waiting for the roof to fall in on him. On the morning of Feb. 28, this writer went to great lengths in a feature concerning the fact that “Mr. Clean’ … er, Dick Gamble … had not spent a single second in an American Hockey League penalty box during the first 57 games of the season. Among the items pointed out were: “The AHL record…
