<div class="byline">BY JACK COOK</div>SASKATOON, Sask.&mdash;The biggest thing to hit the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this winter was Francis Huck, an 18-year-old scoring whiz who delights in re-writing the record books.Huck, who stands something less than five-foot-10 and pivots the Regina Pats&rsquo; classy &ldquo;Golden Hawk&rdquo; line, has established scoring standards that might never be surpassed in a similar schedule.With more than a week left in the regular season, Huck&rsquo;s output stands at 88 goals and 63 assists for 151 points.The previous records, both set in the early 1960s, were 66 goals by Gord Turlik of Prince Albert Mintos and 136 points by John Rodger of Estevan Bruins.Huck&rsquo;s feats have been instrumental in attendance boosts in several centres, including Regina, which is averaging more than 2,000 fans per game.Another city whose customers came out in droves to watch Huck and then stayed around was Saskatoon. For the first time in more than 10 years the Quakers are riding high in the SJHL and the crowds have almost doubled any previous season.Scotty Munro&rsquo;s Estevan Bruins are heading a tight pack in quest of a third straight title. Regina is closest the leaders while Quakers are sitting in third spot. &#9632;

Junior Ace Frank Huck Hot With Record 88-Goal Season

Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull are duelling for the individual scoring lead.And lastly, Glenn Hall of the Hawks and Charlie Hodge of Montreal are still neck-and-neck for the Vezina Trophy.It is the netminders&rsquo; battle that is drawing considerable interest in the closing games of the 1963-64 schedule. Many believe Hall will make it on the strength of having games in hand on Hodge, but others are ready to go along with the amazing little Montreal goalie, who has been one of the true surprises of the season.Hall appears &lsquo;favored&rsquo; to retain his Vezina Trophy despite the fact he came out of the March 9 weekend trailing Hodge by one goal. Hodge has permitted 156 goals in 64 games while Hall has given up 157 in 66 games. Hodge has eight shutouts and Hall six.Both goalers showed the pressure of the netminding race last week when each had a chance to pull away from the other but faltered. Hodge gave up 10 goals in two games before getting into a scoreless shutout duel with Jacques Plante but Hall obliged by &lsquo;blowing&rsquo; to 11 goals in three starts and the race was bunched again. &#9632;

Hall ‘Favored’ In Vezina Trophy Race With Hodge

NEW YORK, N.Y.Jacques Plante is not only the National Hockey League&rsquo;s most colorful goa Ikeeper but now he has to be ranked as its most courageous as well.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0001-02160/3256864-1-eng-US/f0001-022.jpg" title="f0001-02" width="297" height="427"><figcaption class="caption-body">Red Sullivan</figcaption></div>The masked New York puck stopper &mdash; one of the few bright lights in a dismal Ranger hockey season &mdash; defied a 102-degree temperature and a stern edict from Coach Red Sullivan the night of March 7 as he stepped on Forum ice and jolted the hostile Montreal Canadiens in what turned out to be an eventual lost weekend for the Canucks.Plante it seems awoke to find he was under the weather, breathing heavy and his temperature was steadily rising. A doctor was consulted. &ldquo;Stay in bed", was the medic&rsquo;s order.Plante relayed the message to Sullivan but Sully had a message of his own for Jake. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t care if its 105,&rdquo; said Sullivan, &ldquo;you&rsquo;re playing.&rdquo;The medical profession will undoubtedly frown on such action by the likes of Sullivan but it was just what the doctor ordered as far as Plante was concerned. Jacques went out and stopped the Canadiens 3-2 and a season-long Forum &lsquo;jinx&rsquo; and turned around the next night and held the Habs in a 0-0 tie. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY JACK BERRY</div>DETROIT, Mich.The feeling is mutual - - Bobby Hull said he&rsquo;d rather play the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup semi-finals and the Red Wings would rather meet Hull and the Chicago Black Hawks than the Montreal Canadines.&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve played better against Chicago all season than we did against the Canadiens,&rdquo; said manager-coach Sid Abel.&ldquo;Sure, we won a couple of games in the Forum and we didn&rsquo;t win one in Chicago. But there also were games where Montreal just ran right over us with their skating.&ldquo;Our game is more similar to Chicago&rsquo;s than to Montreal&rsquo;s,&rdquo; Abel said.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01802/3255465-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="288" height="446"><figcaption class="caption-body">Bobby Hull</figcaption></div>Montreal easily won the season set from Detroit but the Hawk series was a 5-5-3 standoff with one left.Chances are that Abel won&rsquo;t know whether the Wings will be in Chicago or Montreal on March 26 to start the playoffs until the final weekend of the season.And Abel would rather have it that way. The Wings, far behind the Habs and Hawks season-long in all categories, would like any bit-of help they can get and a hard race could take some of the wind from Montreal and Chicago.The Wings, with their big February record of 8-5-3, pulled comfortably ahead of fifth-place New York and had some hopes of ousting Toronto from third place but if they didn&rsquo;t, they still wouldn&rsquo;t have a let-down such as could be expected of whichever club finishes second.The one worry that Abel has is goalie Terry Sawchuk. The 34-year-old veteran has been playing brilliant hockey for the Wings but because of injuries throughout the system, Abel won&rsquo; t be able to give him any rest in the closing weeks.Abel gave lengthly consideration to recalling Roger Crozier from Pittsburgh but at the last minute decided against it.Crozier had to stay with the Hornets because Pittsburgh goalie Hank Bassen has a bad knee that will require surgery.Since Pittsburgh ends its season a week later than the Wings and then goes into the American Hockey League playoffs, there&rsquo;s little chance of Crozier returning to Detroit this season unless Sawchuk is injured.ICE CHIPS: Alex Faulkner was farmed to Cincinnati to play back into shape after spraining an ankle - - then he turned the ankle in his first start. Faulkner will be recalled for the playoffs.With four home games left, the Wings already have bettered their Olympia victory output of last season &hellip; they won their 20th by edging Toronto, 3-2.Gordie Howe&rsquo;s goal production may be down but there&rsquo;s no doubting his value to the Wings. He set up Parker MacDonald in successive games for goals in the last five minutes to pull out a tie in New York and a victory over the Leafs.Norm Ullman, who got off to a bad start and then had to lay off for nine games with a fracture right above his ankle, is picking up in the second half and in range of a seventh straight 20 goal season.The 28-year-old center moved into fourth place in Red Wing goal scoring and total points (190 goals and 464 total points) passing Syd Howe&rsquo;s goals mark and Abel&rsquo;s point total. He trails Howe, Ted Lindsay and Alex Delvecchio now. &#9632;

<div class="byline">&#x2013; Berry</div>DETROIT, Mich.Irv Spencer has picked up a new nickname with the Red Wings &mdash; &ldquo;Gulliver".It&rsquo;s appropriate &mdash; Gulliver has traveled more this season than Marco Polo, from up to down and back again &mdash; a couple of times.He&rsquo;s played hockey in 17 cities in three different leagues missing only Buffalo, Baltimore and Hershey in the American Hockey League and making all of them in the National Hockey League and the Central Pro League.He&rsquo;s been captain &mdash; at Cincinnati &mdash; and a spare &mdash; at Detroit.He&rsquo;s been bedded in the bottom at Cincinnati, at the top of the league in Pittsburgh.But Spencer says the best place is where he is now &mdash; in the NHL. And the way he&rsquo;s playing, he belongs in the top time.Spencer&rsquo;s odyssey started because of a dislocatel shoulder suffered in the first scrimmage of training camp when he was checked hard by big Doug Barkley. He was brand new with the club, having been drafted last summer from Boston.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-02742/3255520-1-eng-US/f0002-022.jpg" title="f0002-02" width="590" height="580"><figcaption class="caption-body">IRV SPENCER &hellip; Keeps Suitcase Packed</figcaption></div>&ldquo;When I came back the season already had started and I&rsquo;d missed the whole camp,&rdquo; Spencer said. &ldquo;I needed the time in the minors to get into condition.&ldquo;Besides, my shoulder didn&rsquo;t feel strong for the first month I started playing again and I was a little leery of going into corners for fear of hurting it again.&rdquo;So Irv went up and down like a yo-yo.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a good thing I&rsquo;m not married,&rdquo; said the handsome, black curly-haired, 26-year-old bachelor from Sudbury, Ont. &ldquo;A wife would have left me a long time ago after that kind of schedule.&rdquo;He was sent to Cincinnati to get in shape, recalled for several games when there was a death in Barkley&rsquo;s family, sent back to Cincinnati, brought up to Detroit again. On that trip one of his bullet shots in New York cracked Norm Ullman&rsquo;s ankle.In December he was sent back to Cincinnati and then was called by Pittsburgh.&ldquo;I knew I wouldn&rsquo;t spend the season in Cincinnati because the cause was hopeless there. I figured I&rsquo;d probably finish with Pittsburgh.&rdquo;Instead, after scoring five goals and assisting on eight in 18 games &mdash; and he played defense part of the time, Spencer was brought back to Detroit for the final push and Wing fans started asking where he&rsquo;d been all season.Spencer, put on a line with rookie Paul Henderson and right wing and Bruce MacGregor in the middle, immediately was a hit. He skated and checked hard and scored a goal in his second game back.&ldquo;Irv is a handy man to have around,&rdquo; said manager-coach Sid Abel, &ldquo;because he plays both defense and forward and the way we&rsquo;ve had injuries, we need all the versatility we can get.And Spencer is versatile &mdash; in addition to playing over half of Canada and the United States this season, he&rsquo;s played both left and right wing, left and right defense.A defenseman all through junior hockey and the start of his pro career in the Montreal system. Spencer was converted to a forward early last season in Boston, his second NHL stop, by Phil Watson because of his skating ability and hard shot.Spencer developed a blistering shot by strengthening his wrists in the off-season using a 10-pound weight suspended from a two-foot piece of wood by a length of rope. He holds it at arm&rsquo;s length and winds and unwinds the weight.Since moving up to the front line, Spencer has taken a liking to it, more than playing defense.&ldquo;I especially hated to play defense in Detroit,&rdquo; Spencer said, &ldquo;the corners are so shallow here and if you&rsquo;re forechecked, you&rsquo;re bound to give the puck away.&rdquo; Now Spencer is doing the forechecking &hellip; as a Red Wing. &#9632;

Wings’ Spencer Has Played In 17 Cities

<div class="byline">BY ROGER BARRY</div><div class="image-hero"><img title="f0003-02" src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-02682/3255558-1-eng-US/f0003-022.jpg"><figcaption class="caption-body">WAYNE RIVERS &hellip; Ex-Hershey Star Jumps To NHL</figcaption></div>BOSTON, MASS. &mdash;Wayne Rivers looks a great deal like Real Chevrefils, and he has the little hop in his skating which Chevrefils used to have.But can the stocky (5-9, 178) right wing score and backcheck as did Chevrefils in his glory years here?That&rsquo;s what the Bruins want to know. That&rsquo;s what&rsquo;s important to them.And since his recall from Hershey of the American League on February 21, those are the things for which the Bruins&rsquo; management has been studying him.Rivers is a 22-year-old product of the Detroit Red Wings&rsquo; organization, a member of the Hamilton team two years ago when it won the Canadian junior championship.Lynn Patrick, Bruins&rsquo; manager, didn&rsquo;t see that Hamilton team play, but shortly after Rivers signed a professional contract in 1962, he saw Wayne play for Hershey.&ldquo;Yeah, I saw him play, all right,&rdquo; said the Bruins&rsquo; manager. &ldquo;We played a pre-season exhibition with Hershey and lost it, 2-1. He got both the Hershey goals.&rdquo;From time to time Patrick heard comments about Rivers, and they were of a complimentary nature. So last spring, when Detroit left the youngster unprotected. the Bruins purchased him in the draft.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a good one,&rdquo; exuberated Harold Cotton, the Bruins&rsquo; chief scout. &ldquo;1 think we&rsquo;ve bought a really good prospect.&rdquo; &ldquo;Well that&rsquo;s what I&rsquo;ve heard,&rdquo; said Patrick, &ldquo;so now we&rsquo;ll see.&rdquo;Rivers didn&rsquo;t come too far from making the varsity team here last fall. He was optioned to Hershey at the close of the pre-season training period.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-04268/3255551-1-eng-US/f0003-042.jpg" title="f0003-04" width="584" height="958"><figcaption class="caption-body">GARY DORNHOEFER &hellip; Another Bruin Prize</figcaption></div>It was for the express purpose of getting a good look at him that Patrick brought him back last month and Milt Schmidt, the Bruins&rsquo; coach, placed him with two accomplished linemates, Murray Oliver and Johnny Bucyk.Almost the first thing Rivers did was pull a muscle in his leg. But after a brief absence he came back to help set up a winning goal by Oliver in a game with Detroit and score the clinching goal a night later against Toronto.The rugged Hamilton native looked faster and better in his second game here than his first, partly for an obvious reason, partly for a reason less obvious.&ldquo;Sure, I was nervous in the first game,&rdquo; he admitted. &ldquo;Besides wanting to play well. I was playing for the first time in a week.&rdquo;The less obvious reason for the game-to-game improvement was the shedding of a brace which Rivers wore as a precautionary measure.&ldquo;I was able to move around much better in the Toronto game,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;because I was able to play without the brace.&rdquo;Oliver and Bucyk, who make a specialty of developing young right wings (Tom Williams, Gary Dornhoefer, etc.), have both had praise for Rivers&rsquo; conduct in his early games.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s moving both ways,&rdquo; said Oliver, whose 20th goal of the season came after a Rivers pass. &ldquo;When we get the puck, he&rsquo;s busting on his wing. And when the other team gets it he really comes back.&rdquo;Said Bucyk, the burly left wing, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s strong and he gets around that net. He&rsquo;s been getting the scoring chances, and he&rsquo;ll be turning more of them into goals if he comes along with experience.&rdquo;Rivers&rsquo; debut was overshadowed by that of another youngster who arrived with considerably more fanfare. Ron Schock. 20, was originally scheduled to play here in early February.The star center of the Niagara Falls (Ont.) Flyers eventually came in for a three-game tryout just in time to score the tying goal in the Detroit game against Terry S a w c h u k. Schmidt played the junior with the strawberry blond crew cut with Dean Prentice and Dornhoefer, his old junior sidekick. Besides his goal, the result of alert play. Schock also showed a capacity for winning faceoffs. And on his first turn on the ice he knocked down Bill Gadsby with a body check, the first time Detroit&rsquo;s Methuselah of defense has been so treated here in a long time.The Bruins have high hopes for these young men, players like Rivers, Dornhoefer and Schock. They are the-stars of the future who will take the initiative for the Bruins when the Toppazzinis, Hebentons, Prentices and Bucyks have moved on. &#9632;

Rivers Snapped Up By Bruins As Rookie Left Unprotected

<div class="byline">&#x2014; BARRY</div>BOSTON, Mass.Eddie Johnston is the second Bruin in three years to be voted both the Elizabeth C. Dufresne Trophy and the Gallery Gods&rsquo; Award.Johnston, the Bruins&rsquo; brilliant goalkeeper, has been chosen for the Dufresne Trophy as &ldquo;the Boston player who has been most outstanding in home games.&rdquo;He has been selected for the Gallery Gods&rsquo; engraved wrist watch by a committee representing fans in Boston Garden&rsquo;s second balconies for his consistently fine play.Johnston is scheduled to receive both awards prior to the Bruins&rsquo; final home game with the Chicago Black Hawks March 22.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-03460/3255589-1-eng-US/f0003-032.jpg" title="f0003-03" width="292" height="454"><figcaption class="caption-body">Eddie Johnston</figcaption></div>As the Dufresne winner, the Montreal native succeeds Johnny Bucyk. And as the winner of both trophies, he succeeds Doug Mohns, who won them two years ago. Tom Williams received the Gallery Gods&rsquo; gift a year ago.Johnston is the fifth Bruins&rsquo; goalkeeper to receive the Dufresne, which was placed in competition for the 1935-36 season. Tiny Thompson was the first winner: other goalkeepers to win it since have been Frank Brimsek, Sugar Jim Henry and Terry Sawchuk.When Johnston&rsquo;s selection by sportswriters and sportscasters associated with the Bruins was announced, Eddie had six shutouts and the best goals-against average here since Don Simmons in 1957-58.Noted quotes:Forbes Kennedy, on reading how &ldquo;the slippery ice&rdquo; and not a right-hand punch by Orland Kurtenbach sent Chicago&rsquo;s Elmer Vasko sprawling in Chicago: &ldquo;If that was a slip, I hope I never get hit with one like it.&rdquo;Eddie Johnston to Dean Prentice, after Prentice&rsquo;s second &ldquo;goal&rdquo; of the season against him: &ldquo;Dean ol&rsquo; Buddy (laughing), take a good look at these jerseys. Shoot at the other ones.&rdquo;King Clancy, after the Bruins beat Toronto for the fifth time: &ldquo;Next season Boston will be a contender for first place, not just a playoff position. They have some good youngsters and Johnston has established himself.&rdquo; &#9632;

He layed most of two periods and assisted on the tying goal as Rangers went on to defeat Chicago, 4-3 &hellip; Seiling will be one of the key players for the Marlboros as they go after the Memorial Cup, Canada&rsquo;s top junior prize &hellip; Lou Kaplan and Joe Lein, president and general manager respectively of the St. Paul Rangers of the Central Pro League are more than disappointed with the poor attendance this season &hellip; &lsquo;&rsquo;Our players come out for an important game and see more than half the building vacant. They get the impression that no one cares if they win or lose,&rdquo; stated Kaplan the other night &hellip; &lsquo;&rsquo;It&rsquo;s hard to figure how we could fill the building with 8,000 people when we were playing in the International League and can&rsquo;t coax a full house out for this type of hockey,&rdquo; commented Lein. Mahovlich Becomes Fifth Player To Join 200-Goal Club This Year

<div class="byline">BY HARRY MOLTER</div>CHICAGO, Ill &mdash;It could well be that Chicago&rsquo;s Ab McDonald is hockey&rsquo;s most underrated player this season.When you play on a line with two all-stars &mdash; centre Stan Mikita and rightwing Kenny Wharram there isn&rsquo;t much room for a lot of publicity about the third man.But the Mikita-Wharram-McDonald combine has operated as a unit ever since they were put together in the fall of 1960 and dubbed by general manager Tommy Ivan the &ldquo;Scooter Line&rdquo; because of their hustle and buzzing around the ice.&ldquo;Look,&rdquo; said Wharram after he had scored the three-goal hat trick, including the winning goal in a rousing 4-3 triumph over Montreal to keep the Black Hawks in a battle with Canadiens for first place. &ldquo;Stan and I have scored a lot of goals and had the puck bounce for us this season. We&rsquo;re always in on the net.&ldquo;But the only reason we can operate that way is because of big Ab. He&rsquo;s the balancer for our line. We know he&rsquo;s backing us up and will cover any loose opposing forwards if we lose the puck. That gives us the freedom to force the play like we do.&rdquo;In the Black Hawk dressing room McDonald, at six-feet, two-inches seems almost twice as tall as his shorter teammates who hover around the five-eight mark.While reporters often gather around the talkative colorful Mikita or Wharram, the big surprise scorer, of the year big left wing McDonald usually dresses quietly next to them.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-01799/3255734-1-eng-US/f0005-012.jpg" title="f0005-01" width="558" height="919"><figcaption class="caption-body">AB MCDONALD &hellip; Most Underrated Player</figcaption></div>&ldquo;It looks like you&rsquo;re hustling more the last few weeks,&rdquo; a lone reporter said to McDonald the other night (March 1), while six or seven reporters crowded around &ldquo;hat trick&rdquo; Wharram and center Mikita. &ldquo;You seem to be forechecking more now than earlier in the year.&rdquo;Bib Ab buttoned his white shirt and wiped some blood away from his nose. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s left over from my fight with Green (Boston&rsquo;s Ted Green) the other night,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know about the forechecking. You do more against some teams than others. You can&rsquo;t do it so much against a team like Boston. They&rsquo;re always looking to get down the ice on you. Montreal is more organized and more predictable.&ldquo;Ken Stan and I still work about the same way as when we were first together as a line. The first one goes for the puck, the second man into the zone also forces the play and the last man in covers for the other two. That&rsquo;s usually my role but I go on ahead if I am the first one into the zone.&rdquo;Because he is a big man &mdash; McDonald weighs 195 pounds&mdash; he often appears to be skating at semi-slow motion in comparison to the two buzz-saw skaters who are his linemates. But Mc-Donald moves well both ways. And he can score goals.In his first two seasons with Montreal Canadiens, used sporadically, he scored 13 and 9 goals. Chicago liked his potential and got him, along with j Reggie Fleming, in a big nine-player swap in the summer of 1960. Most of the other players j involved went right to the minor leagues.As a Black Hawk, McDonald scored 17 goals in 1960-61, 22 goals the next year and 20 last season.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s not scoring at the same pace this year,&rdquo; said Coach Billy Reay the other night. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s only got 13 goals with seven games left. But if you check the goals against by his checks you&rsquo;ll see how good a season he&rsquo;s having &mdash; perhaps even better than last year. He&rsquo;s probably the best defensive for-ward in the league this year and certainly one of the most underrated.&rdquo;With 36 goals by Wharram and 34 by Mikita, added to Mc-Donald&rsquo;s 13, the Scooter Line had 83 goals in Chicago&rsquo;s first 63 games and was by far the top-scoring line in the National Hockey League.While Mikita and Wharram have been among the NHL&rsquo;s top four to five scorers all season (with Mikita the leader most of the way), McDonald&rsquo;s 30 assists along with his 13 goals have kept him among the league&rsquo;s top twenty scorers all season. &#9632;

McDonald Effective But Forgotten Member Of Top Scoring ‘Scooters’

CHICAGO, Ill. &mdash;The Chicago Black Hawks&rsquo; &lsquo;Scooter Line&rsquo; is still the class of the National Hockey League as the 1963-64 season reaches its climax.The &lsquo;Scooters&rsquo; &mdash; Stan Mikita, Ab McDonald and Ken Wharram &mdash; are the most productive unit in the NHL with a total of 199 points, in 66 games, to head off the Rangers&rsquo; new scoring sensations, Rod Gilbert, Phil Goyette and Camille Henry, who have counted 167 points for the Blues.The Scooters also lead all other NHL lines in the matter of goal-scoring with 87. The Ranger unit has 71.Mikita leads all NHL point men with 85. Wharram is fourth in the race with 69 and McDonald stands 19th with 45 points.Goyette, the Rangers&rsquo; new point leader with Andy Bathgate gone from the club, is 8th in the NHL lists with 59. Gilbert is right behind in 9th spot with 58 and Henry is 13th with 50 points. &#9632;

Mikita Sets Hawk Record For Most Points With 85 Surpassing Mark Held By Hull

<div class="byline">BY GIL SMITH</div>MONTREAL, Que.One of the top scorers on Canadiens is a man whose name is seldom enshrined in the public prints.Gilles Tremblay doesn&rsquo;t have the majestic qualities of a Beliveau, the color of a Geoffrion, or even the arresting slapshot of a Bobby Rousseau. But. Tremblay, on a game-to-game basis is one of the deadliest snipers on the Canadien team. And, he&rsquo;s also one of the most consistent.Gilles, the 25-year-old native of Montmorency Falls. P Q., bad appeared in just 54 games as this issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS went to press. In that span, he&rsquo;d chalked up 22 goals for what amounted to one of the best scoring averages on the club. Though he&rsquo;d missed 17 games through injury, he was certain to wind up the season as one of the most prolific scorers on the squad. It will be the third season in a row that he&rsquo;s achieved such a mark, which isn&rsquo;t bad for a man with less than four full seasons to his credti. Last year. Tremblay played 60 games for Habs and was the top goal-getter on the team with twenty-five. The year before, he scored 32 goals and finished second-highest. This year, he should be good for 25 goals again.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01893/3255820-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="302" height="460"><figcaption class="caption-body">Gilles Tremblay</figcaption></div>An indication of just how accurate Tremblay is around the nets, can be had from a look at the N.H.L. statistics. After two-thirds of the season, he was the third most accurate shooter in hockey behind Camille Henry and Kenny Wharram. He had 17 goals on 93 shots for a percentage of 18.3. Far behind him in accuracy were Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe. The former had a scoring percentage of 11.8, while Howe&rsquo;s percentage was 7.1. Earlier in the season, after one-third of the campaign had passed, Tremblay led the league as the most accurate sniper of them all. Yet, despite these accomplishments, he remains unsung among the goal scorers &mdash; the glamour boys &mdash; of hockey. How come?Part of the answer may be that Tremblay doesn&rsquo;t get the &ldquo;big&rdquo; goals, the ones that win or tie a hockey game and bring attention to the scorer. Of his first 17 goals this season, only one &mdash; against Toronto &mdash; was a winner. Another one tied a game against the Boston Bruins. The rest were lost somewhere in the shuffle, on nights when Canadiens either won or lost by high scores.Tremblay&rsquo;s value to Habs is not confined to goal-scoring, however. He&rsquo;s also a top checker and one of the swiftest skaters on the team. He frequently draws the assignment of covering the other team&rsquo;s biggest guns, when they happen to be right-wingers. He&rsquo;s been shadowing Cordie Howe and Andy Bathgate for years, and, this season, he&rsquo;s also had to contend with Chicago s Kenny Wharram.All in all. he&rsquo;s a mightly valuable man to Canucks, and they know it &mdash; even though he&rsquo;s lost in the shadows of the more glamorous names in the league. &#9632;

Gilles Tremblay Fills Role of Unsung Scoring Ace For Habs

Que. &mdash;Toe Blake, the most successful coach in hockey&rsquo; history, is being coached, himself, by correspondence.He&rsquo;s getting the word from a group of women on how to run the team.It seems that the ladies &mdash; none of whom are known to each other &mdash; have been writing Blake for years, advising him on how&rsquo; to beat the opposition. Even in the days when Canadiens were finishing first by 20 points, the letters rolled in. They told him how he could&rsquo;ve finished first by a wider margin.Some of the letters have been a little testy at times, and have followed the mysterious line of feminine logic.&ldquo;You are favoring Beliveau over Henri Richard,&rdquo; wrote one lady in a precise hand. &ldquo;We see Beliveau on the ice all the time, and poor little Henri never gets a chance to play. Why, some nights he just sits on the bench in his street clothes, looking like a lost soul!&rdquo; Richard was recovering from an ankle injury, at the time and couldn&rsquo;t skate.Blake eventually reached the point where he no longer opened any letters, at all. He just let them pile up in a corner. But, then came a telegram which he couldn&rsquo;t resist taking a peak at. It was from one of the ladies, and said simply:&ldquo;YOU WILL NOT, REPEAT, NOT WIN!&rdquo;The telegram was received a few hours after Habs won their last Stanley Cup &#9632;

R&acirc;telle, in his second crack at the NHL after a season at Baltimore, is showing more drive and persistence.&ldquo;That&rsquo;s all he needs to be a big league center,&rdquo; says Sullivan. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s got everything else. And playing with guys like Duff and Nevin, that checking determination is bound to rub off on him.&rdquo;Duff, with four goals in the last two games, is anxious to prove the Leafs made a sad mistake in agreeing to a five-for-two deal with the Rangers.Duff impressed Sullivan not only by the recovery of his scoring touch but also by his zealous hitting even after he&rsquo;d suffered a mid-game groin injury that put him out for half a period.&ldquo;He&rsquo;s my kind of player,&rdquo; said Sullivan. &ldquo;And I&rsquo;m just as high on Nevin. He&rsquo;s very good in the corners. And as good as he&rsquo;s been. I know he can be even better.&rdquo; &#9632;

Ex-Leafs Duff, Nevin Show They Were Good Buy For N.Y.

NEW YORK N. Y &mdash;Camille Henry, the thin little man is bigger than ever. He now is captain of the New York Rangers.Henry&rsquo; succeeds Andy Bathgate, who was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the most recent Ranger upheaval.Superficially an unlikely looking captain, Henry joins the rank of such N.H.L. behemoths as Leo Boivin. George Armstrong, Pierre Pilote. Alex Delvecchio, and Jean Beliveau.Long regarded as an emaciated version of Beliveau, 1 Henry has been the most energetic and consistent Ranger forward all season.Recently, he has starred on the &ldquo;French Line&rdquo; with Phil Goyette and Rod Gilbert, the most potent Ranger attacking unit all season.There was some speculation as to Bathgate&rsquo;s successor but the Ranger management wasted little time in picking Henry. Another possibility was Harry Howell, who once held the captaincy, and has played more games than any other Ranger.The feeling was that Howell, once the target of balcony boo-birds. would be more effective as an alternate captain.Henry&rsquo;s appointment was unanimously approved by players and fans alike. He is one of the few Blueshirts to have avoided catcalls during his Broadway career.&ldquo;I have always said that I wanted to finish my playing days in New York", said the new Ranger&rsquo;s captain.Ironically. Captain Henry once found less favor with his employers, than other Rangers. Once, during the Phil Watson regime. Henry was dispatched to Providence where he nearly outscored the entire American League. Another time the Rangers left him unprotected but he was not touched by any other N.H.L team.A reason for this reaction has been Henry&rsquo;s occasional attack" of nerves which temporarily brake his effectiveness. Another rap is his size, which makes him the target for N.H.L. bullies.The record clearly indicate: that Henry has surmounted these obstacles. Thinking back, one re calls that another little skinny forward did pretty well as Ranger captain. That would be Don &ldquo;Bones&rdquo; Raleigh.Like Raleigh, Henry though lacking in pounds is gifted with surplus of that very important commodity that makes good captains &mdash; guts. &#9632;

Rangers Still Hope For Miracle Bui Red Wings Refuse To Falter

<div class="byline">BY JIM PROUDFOOT</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-03649/3255975-1-eng-US/f0008-032.jpg" title="f0008-03" width="340" height="485"><figcaption class="caption-body">Punch Imlach</figcaption></div>TORONTO, Ont.The Punch Imlach era in Toronto hockey is destined to continue.Indications are that Imlach will be given a long-term contract to run the Maple Leafs after his present deal expires at the conclusion of the current National Hockey League season.He is general manager, of course, and the guessing is that he will carry on as coach too, although there have been rumors he will pass that job along to Rudy Pilous, who has been running Leafs&rsquo; Western League affiliate in Denver.In any case, King Clancy will stick around as Imlach&rsquo;s assistant.Right now, Imlach is occupied with getting Leafs in top shape for the Stanley Cup playoffs, in which they will seek a third consecutive world championship. Imlach was realistic enough to realize several weeks ago that Leafs had no chance of retaining their schedule title. Montreal and Chicago had moved too far ahead, even though Leafs had snapped out of their disastrous mid-winter slump.A rest for goaltender Johnny Bower was first item on the agenda. During a 16-game period, in which he allowed the opposition only 31 goals. Bower had been just about the most efficient goalie in the National League. Imlach was anxious to have that kind of net-minding in the playoffs, so on March 1, he put Don Simmons in goal.The fact the move probably would cost Bower any chance of winning the Vezina Trophy was considered secondary.Imlach also wanted to give utility men Eddie Shack and Billy Harris some extra work, so they&rsquo;d be at their best when the playdowns open March 26.Then there was the problem of getting Bobby Baun back into the lineup. Although he&rsquo;d been out a month because of a smashed finger, it was expected he&rsquo;d be able to step right back into his old job beside Carl Brewer because he&rsquo;d been skating every day.Finally, Imlach wanted to complete the adaptation of newcomers Don McKenney and Andy Bathgate.Oddly, McKenney made the quicker adjustment. The new line with him on left wing with Dave Keon and George Armstrong was solid right from the start.Bathgate, Red Kelly and Frank Mahovlich experienced defensive problems, although they passed the puck cleverly.But one place where Bathgate was a tremendous help was on the power play "&rsquo;here he worked the right point. No Leaf shoots the puck as well as this latest acquisition.During Leafs&rsquo; baffling droop that lasted through January and most of February, there was widespread criticism of Imlach. There were no hints he might be retained, or even that his authority : might be curtailed, but there were definite suggestions that Leafs no longer would produce for him.It seems hardly reasonable to think that Leafs&rsquo; owners - - Stafford Smythe, Harold Ballard and John Bassett - - could lose confidence in Imlach in the light of the results he has shown since he was hired in 1958.Leafs were a last-place club when Imlach was hired. Leafs To Give Imlach Long Contract

The New York Rangers are on the verge of missing the NHL playoff round again this season but it is no fault of their masked netminder, Jacques Plante.The acrobatic Ranger puck-stopper was at his scintillating best in a pair of weekend games with the Montreal Canadiens and when the smoke had cleared, the Blues had taken three out of four points away from the Habs, seriously hurting their chances of finishing up in first place.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-05328/3256013-1-eng-US/f0008-052.jpg" title="f0008-05" width="306" height="511"><figcaption class="caption-body">Jacques Plante</figcaption></div>Through both games Plante was a standout, at times fantastic. The former Montreal goalkeeper, who has had his troubles this year with his old teammates, came up with a great game in Montreal Mar. 7 as the Rangers won 3-2 for their first victory of the season on Forum ice. The next night back in New York Plante collared the Habs as the two teams turned in a scoreless game the first in Madison Square Garden in 10 years. It was only Plante&rsquo;s third shutout of the year but it was a big one.The controversial but colorful New York goalkeeper really earned his money in the weekend games stopping a total of 71 shots in comparison to 40 for Hodge. It was the fifth straight game without a loss for the Rangers and most of the credit belongs to Plante, the NHL&rsquo;s player-of-the-week. I.The Rhode Island Reds have made a big move towards strengthening their defense for the stretch drive of the American Hockey League season recently with the acquisition of defenseman Ed Westfall from the Boston Bruins.With several of their Eastern Division rivals making last minute deals in an effort to &ldquo;load up&rdquo; for the month of March, the Reds themselves completed the deal for Westfall only a day before the March 1st deadline.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-01857/3256044-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="309" height="426"><figcaption class="caption-body">Ed Westfall</figcaption></div>The 23-year-old Westfall, who spent the last two years with the NHL Bruins, made an auspicious debut in Providence on March 1st, scoring a goal and contributing an assist in the Reds 4-0 victory over Cleve-land.More important, though, was his staunch defensive play which lent added depth to the Providence blueline corps which had been depleted two weeks earlier with an untimely injury to player-coach Ferny Flaman.Flaman sustained a fractured right cheekbone in a game at Cleveland on Feb. 19th when he was hit in the face by a puck.He was sidelined 5 games from his duties as coach, and his playing status is questionable for the rest of the season.Westfall&rsquo;s acquisition by the Reds came on the heels of Baltimore&rsquo;s last minute &ldquo;beef up&rdquo; (the last of many, many this year). The Clippers, fighting the Reds for the Eastern Division&rsquo;s third and final playoff position, had secured defensemen Larry Cahan, Jack Bownass and Arnie Brown, as well as rookie for-ward Bill Collins and veteran Dick Meissner.Hershey, too, added a talented forward for the stretch when they worked a deal which brought center Bob Leiter from the Bruins.Westfall&rsquo;s assignment to Providence is part of a deal made by owner Lou Pieri with Boston which will be consumated later in the spring. It is rumored the Reds will acquire additional players from the Bruins next season.Four players - - Stan Baluik, Larry Leach, Matt Ravlich and Bob Beckett - - are Boston-owned skaters now with the Reds.The Reds suffered another crippling injury the night before Westfall&rsquo;s arrival when winger George Ranieri, a 20-goal scorer, sustained a serious concussion in a game at Springfield.Ranieri, wheeling out of his own end, was checked hard by the Indians&rsquo; Randy Miller and he crashed to the ice, the back of his head hitting first.Tiny Serge Boudreault, restored to the line-up recently after seeing limited action in the early part of the campaign, has scored 6 goals in his last 15 games. The spirited Boudreault also has been doing a good defensive job for the Reds. &#9632;

How They Stand In AHL Race

OhioAll-Star voting is with us once again and it is only natural that each team in the American Hockey League display its wares on the showcase for the consideration of those who do the balloting.In the case of the Cleveland Barons, their display case is more crowded than any of their backers dared hope it would be at the outset of the season.Prominently displayed, of course, are the credentials of playing-coach Fred Glover, not only for consideration as an all-star, but also for the voting on the league&rsquo;s most valuable player.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-04460/3256168-1-eng-US/f0010-042.jpg" title="f0010-04" width="280" height="431"><figcaption class="caption-body">Fred Glover</figcaption></div>Sharing the display counter with Glover&rsquo;s credentials are those of defenseman Ted Harris and goalie Les Binkley.Glover has made the official all-star team five times and twice has been the winner of the Les Cunningham Trophy as the AHL&rsquo;s most valuable player.It would be hard to conceive who has a better right to repeat in either category for the 1963-64 season.As a scorer, he has been battling for the league lead throughout the regular season. With all due credit to his two linemates. Ron Attwell and Jim Mikol, their excellent showings are influenced to a large extent by the manner in which they work with Glover, who is, without question, the &ldquo;big man&rdquo; on the line.Harris has been a huge factor in the success story of the Barons. The big fellow who played for Springfield for each of the past four seasons has done a great job for the Barons.While it may have been merely coincidental, the fact remains that the Barons&rsquo; only serious slump of the season was incurred while Harris was taking a brief stint with the Montreal Canadiens. During his five-game absence, the Barons failed to win a game.Binkley has been terrific in the Cleveland net. He will get serious competition for the all-star berth from Quebec&rsquo;s Lorne Worsley and, possibly, from Pittsburgh&rsquo;s Roger Crozier.At this writing, it still is questionable whether Crozier will finish the season with the Hornets. He will have to play all the way to qualify for the all-star team. Should he go back to the Detroit Red Wings, Binkley and Worsley will slug it out tor all-star honors, per-haps with Baltimore&rsquo;s Gilles Villemure also coming in for some backing.Should Crozier be ineligible through not playing enough games. Binkley also will have a good shot at the Hap Holmes Memorial Trophy.Harris is a definite candidate for the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL&rsquo;s best defenseman. &#9632;

Y.Doug Robinson and Len Lunde probably will be the only members of the Buffalo Bisons to get more than passing attention from the press, radio and TV electorate when the American Hockey League all-star ballots are distributed next month.Robinson, the rookie of the year and named to the second all-star team last season, has overcome enforced periods of idleness which kept him out of 27 of the first 56 games this season.He missed five games with a knee ailment, two with an attack of flu and 20 with a blood dis-order. In the 29 games he had played as this edition of THE HOCKEY NEWS went to press, the lanky left-winger was the team&rsquo;s fifth-leading scorer with 18 goals and 16 assists.His seven-game scoring streak at home was snapped by the Pittsburgh Hornets, leaving him with 12 goals in the last 14 games.Lunde, in his first term with the Herd, is centering Robinson and Barry Cullen, The fleet Lunde is the Bisons&rsquo; top point man with 25 goals and 34 assists at this writing.Lunde isn&rsquo;t the soundest defensive center in the league, and his deficiencies in that department will cost him votes.A year ago. the Bisons placed three men on the first all-star team, goalie Denis DeJordy, center Art Stratton and right-winger John McKenzie. In addition to Robinson, defenseman Ian Cush-enan was named to the second team.Stratton, now with Pittsburgh, will draw heavy&rsquo; support again. DeJordy and McKenzie are with the Chicago Black Hawks and Cushenan is also with the HornetsALONG THE BOARDS &mdash; A group of Buffalo press, radio and TV types selected an all-time Buffalo all-star team for the Hockey Bisons Booster Club. The consensus of the votes had goalie Denis DeJordy, defensemen Pierre Pilote and Roger Leger, and forwards Don Marshall. Gaye Stewart and McKenzie on the first team. The second team included Jacques Plante, the late Frank Eddolls. Ivan Irwin, Ab DeMarco. Paul Meger. Fred Hunt and Ed Slowinski. Hunt and Slowinski tied in the voting. &#9632;

Robinson, Lunde Likely Only Bisons To Get All-Star Look With Herd Mired In Cellar

NEW YORK, N.Y.&mdash;The players of the six contending American Hockey League teams which will participate in the Calder Cup playoffs this season will divide $106,000 among them as compared to $104,000 last year.The first place team in each division receives $10,000. The second place team in each division divides up $6.000 while each third place club receives $3.000.In Series &ldquo;A", between the first place teams in each division, a best four out of seven series, the winner receives $12,000 and the loser, $8.000. Series &ldquo;B&rdquo; and &ldquo;C", conducted on a best two out of three basis, will have the second and third place teams within their own division meeting each other. Each winner will receive $5,000 and the loser. $3.000.Series &ldquo;D&rdquo; finds the winners of the &ldquo;B&rdquo; and &ldquo;C&rdquo; series meeting each other in a best three out of five affair the winner getting $7.000 and the loser. $5.000. &#9632;

AHL Team Pool Hits $106,000 for Playoffs

Y.Consistency is a hockey player called Gerry Ehman.The Rochester Americans&rsquo; veteran right wing not only comes up with a consistent effort every game, his goal-scoring also reflects this uniformity.If &lsquo;Tex&rsquo;, as the off-season cattle rancher from Saskatchewan is known to his teammates, can click for a goal in Providence this week, he&rsquo;ll have &ldquo;bit for the cycle&rdquo; - - that is scored goals both home and away against every team in the American Hockey&rsquo; League.Now&rsquo; this is quite a feat, since Rochester plays some clubs only four times here and others only four times in their own rinks. And Gerry has missed six games - - five while with Toronto and one-because of a throat infection.Here&rsquo;s the amazing part of Ehman&rsquo;s consistency: He scored at least one goal both home and away&rsquo; against all eight AHL opponents last season &hellip; AND against all seven opponents in 1961-62. Only failure to tally against Hershey&rsquo; here kept him from accomplishing this same achievement in 1960-61 - - his first season with the Americans.Unlike many hockey players, Gerry plays equally as hard on the road as he does at home. His 11 foreign ice goals are three more than his nearest teammate this season.Ehman&rsquo;s Rochester career shows 18 goals at home and 14 away for 32 in only 53 games during 1960-61; 15 at home and 14 away for 29 in 66 games during 1961-62; 18 at home and 12 away for 30 in 72 outings last season, and 17 at home and 11 away for 28 thus far this season. &#9632;

Goal-Scoring Consistency Puts Ehman Near Mark

<div class="byline">BY JIMMY JORDAN</div>PITTSBURGH, Pa.Roger Crozier, the slender goalie who landed in the American hockey league via a rather odd route, and who played a few games in the National Hockey League this season, may be in line for the Hap Holmes Memorial Trophy this season?Crozier, despite a few shaky sessions recently, apparently will have the average, and will play in enough games, to pick up the trophy if he continues in the Pittsburgh Hornets&rsquo; nets the rest of the season.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-02781/3256278-1-eng-US/f0011-022.jpg" title="f0011-02" width="288" height="460"><figcaption class="caption-body">Roger Crozier</figcaption></div>If he does, he&rsquo;ll just be continuing a Hornet tradition.Crozier&rsquo;s boss, General Manager Baz Bas-tien, won the trophy three times in four sea-sons in the late 40&rsquo;s before an accident side lined him.Bastien was followed by Gil Mayer, who won the trophy five times in seven seasons in Hornet livery.Crozier came to the American League and Pittsburgh under circumstances which now look quite unusual.Detroit, disenchanted with defenseman Howie Young, had just about decided to send him to Pittsburgh when the Chicago Black Hawks suddenly expressed interest in the NHL&rsquo;s bad boy.They wanted to trade Ron Ingram for him. Before it was all over Sid Abel, the Red Wings&rsquo; GM who had been listening to some scouting reports, got them to throw in Crozier as part of the deal.That probably&rsquo; was one of the biggest &ldquo;steals&rdquo; in hockey history.Young has departed Chicago Stadium by special request of the Black Hawk manage-ment, Ingram was made part of a big deal with New York which sent Andy Bathgate to Toronto recently, and Crozier still is ready to step into a National Hockey League net when-ever the Red Wings feel they need him.Right now, he is filling in for Hank Bassen, out with a knee injury which refuses to respond to treatment. At last look he had played 33 games for the Hornets and was boasting a 2.42 goals-against average.And this despite a stretch in which be lost two games to Springfield, 6-4. and 6-4, one to Providence, 6-0, and one to Hershey&rsquo;, 5-1, with a 2-0 shutout over Rochester mixed in with those scores.He still leads Quebec&rsquo;s Gump Worsely and Cleveland&rsquo;s Les Binkley after allowing just one goal in each of his last three games.There is a possibility Bassen may have to undergo knee surgery, and will be lost for the rest of the season.Meanwhile, Chuck Holmes, right wing who has been out for nearly two months following surgery for a hernia, is skating and is hopeful of returning to action before the end of the season.Norm Beaudin, young right-winger called up from Cincinnati of the Central League when the Red Wings recalled Irv Spencer, is doing a fine job in that slot.Should Holmes be ready in time for the playoffs next month, Coach Vic Stasiuk will have two right-hand shots - - something he&rsquo;s been hollering for most of the season.Meanwhile, Lou Marcon, who suffered a leg fracture Christmas night which required surgery, is back in his old form, batting op-posing forwards away from the net, relieving another big worry Stasiuk had had over a defense which would suddenly collapse in the middle of a game.First place in the Western Division was well within the Hornets&rsquo; grasp at this writing. &#9632;

Crozier Threat For Goaling Award With Smart Play In Hornets Nets

<div class="byline">BY BUSTER CLEGG</div>PROVIDENCE, R.I.&mdash;The Rhode Island Reds have learned that strength in reserve can play a vital part in the success of a professional hockey club.The Reds became acutely aware of this when a substitute coach and a substitute goalie paced them to solid victories over Rochester and Springfield, thus continuing their drive for a play-off berth in the Eastern Division of the American Hockey League.The Providence club took the ice at Rochester on Feb. 23rd minus their general manager, coach, one of their best defensemen and their regular goalie.Ferny Flaman, who holds the first three titles, had received a fractured cheekbone in Cleveland two nights before and was con-fined to his hotel room that evening.Goalie Ed Giacomin, the only netminder to have played the full schedule to that time, received a groin injury also in the Cleve-land game and was sidelined, too.With Flaman ordered to complete rest, the Reds flew in veteran Zellio Toppazzini to substitute as coach. The goaltending job went to 26-year old Ross Brooks, who shortly before had been called up from the Eastern League.Toppazzini, used only sparingly as a player this year, took com-plete charge in Flaman&rsquo;s absence and Brooks came up with two spectacular games. At Rochester Brooks had 37 stops in handing the Amerks a 3-1 defeat. He had a similar number at home in drubbing Springfield, 5-1.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-03639/3256309-1-eng-US/f0011-032.jpg" title="f0011-03" width="667" height="841"><figcaption class="caption-body">ZELLIO TOPPAZZINI &hellip; Winning Debut</figcaption></div>For the Reds, who have been fighting an up-hill battle to make a playoff position in the East, the victories were two of the most important of the season.Just when things were looking the bleakest, their reserve strength came to rescue and pull-ed them to within two points of the faltering Baltimore Clippers. With five games in hand on the Clippers, the Reds appeared headed for a playoff berth.For the &ldquo;substitutes&rdquo; Toppazzini and Brooks, the entire club seemed to give just a little bit extra, as often happens when reserves are pressed into crucial spots at crucial times.Coach Flaman, who sustained his injury when hit in the face by a shot, has been undergoing x-rays to determine the full extent of the injury. Swelling has prevented full knowledge of the damage done.Doctors believe the fracture will not be complicated by any extensive bone depression and there is an outside chance Flaman could be skating by playoff time.In scoring, center Willie Marshall has continued his quest for the AHL scoring championship and presently is battling Cleveland&rsquo;s Fred Glover and Bronco Horvath of Rochester for the honors.If Marshall con win the title he&rsquo;ll be the first Providence player since Toppazzini turned the trick in 1955-56. &#9632;

<div class="byline">BY PAUL LIPPMAN</div>SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.&mdash;Excluding Denver, which already has clinched first place, the playoff race in the Western League lately has changed directions more often than the windsock at San Francisco airport.Going into the final three weeks of regulation play, there were four teams within striking distance of second place, and three of those clubs had exchanged the position in a span of just seven days.From second to fifth, the standings at one count read: Portland. 60 points; Seattle, 59; Los Angeles, 58, and San Francisco, 56. The latter club had won four of five contests in a span of two weeks and remained in fifth place, just two games out of second, the entire time.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-05301/3256371-1-eng-US/f0012-052.jpg" title="f0012-05" width="572" height="575"><figcaption class="caption-body">HOWIE YOUNG &hellip; Playing It Safe</figcaption></div>&ldquo;Tightest I&rsquo;ve ever seen the race in my 13 years in the league,&rdquo; said San Francisco&rsquo;s Bud Poile. &ldquo;You not only don&rsquo;t get any help from the other clubs, but you have to win every game even to stay in fifth place.&rdquo;Portland won five in a row and only managed to move from third to second after the fifth victory.Only person not presently worried about the outcome is Rudy Pilous, but even he is a bit skeptical about the future as the other teams all now have momentum, and his club seems to have tailed off after clinching first place the last week in February.&ldquo;I hope we don&rsquo;t meet you in the first round of the playoffs,&rdquo; he said after fifth-place San Fran-cisco had convincingly defeated his Invaders, 6-2, in the Cow Palace. &ldquo;This is the best-looking fifth-place club I&rsquo;ve ever seen.&rdquo;The regular season ends on March 21st, and the playoff race, featuring the first four clubs, pro-mises to go right down to the last game. It would be folly to visualize the outcome in any other fashion as the race has been this tight &mdash; only four points separating four clubs &mdash; since the first week in January.A quick skate around the league:HOWIE YOUNG scored his first goal for Los Angeles in an 8-3 victory over Denver. It was his fifth game for the Blades, and he had been able to muster but 16 minutes in the penalty box during this mild stretch. Young is playing with a possible calcium de-posit behind the kneecap which will handcap his play on the ice but will not sideline him.THE BLADES and Seattle Totems played a 0-0 tie game after three periods and overtime recently, and it was only the second such game played in the WHL in 10 years.JACK GEYER, general man-ager of the Los Angeles club, jokingly refers to the tight play-off race as being something akin to &ldquo;five people riding in the front seat of a Vokswagen.&rdquo;AL MILLAR of Denver, who was coasting along nicely with a 2.72 average up to the time the Invaders clinched first place, suddenly gave up 17 goals in three games, so ferociously were the other clubs trying to fatten up on the mountain team.THE SEALS tied Seattle in the final three seconds of a recent game, then went on to win it, 4-3, in overtime, the winning goal coming while Larry Zeidel was in the penalty box. Totem coach Keith Allen was fit to be tied, but not quite in the manner in which it happened.DENVER was only the second team in the Western Hockey League&rsquo;s 16 seasons to win the point race in its first year of operation, the other one having been the Winnipeg Warriors of the 1955-56 campaign.JACK NORRIS, Los Angeles goaltender, is the only player in the loop who has not yet been penalized. Norris, however, has played in only one-third of the Blades&rsquo; games. &#9632;

Lou&rsquo;s 37 markers in 64 games played is three more than the number tallied by Portland centerman Art Jones, who is in second place with 34 goals after 58 games played.Guyle Fielder, the WHL&rsquo;s top point-getter, is still in command in the assist department, as he has been since the start of the season. Fielder has 79 helpers in 58 games played, 30 more than his nearest rival, Vancouver&rsquo;s Phil Maloney, who has 49.Portland&rsquo;s Mike Donaldson added six minor penalties to his league-leading total and now his penalty-box time for the season stands at 178 minutes. With nine games yet to play the robust defenseman stands a chance of surpassing the league record of 210 minutes, set in 1959 by Frank Arnett. &#9632;

Tenn.The goalie situation, which general manager Ray Miron deemed his major problem all year, is settled at Knoxville for the remainder of the season and the coming playoffs.The Knights have decided to go with Lynn Davis, a 195-pound goalie who previously played with Charlotte during the 1958-60 campaigns. Miron is confident the netminder from Lakehead, Ont. will do the job better than his predecessors, Russ Gillow and Brian Lunney.A lot of folks wondered why the Knights weren&rsquo;t battling Greensboro for the lead all year in view of the fine talent on the club. Miron continued to yelp about the defense, especially the goal-tending.With the EHL race coming down the homestretch and the crucial playoffs on the horizon, Miron felt that his team stood an excellent chance of winning all the laurels. But he didn&rsquo;t believe Lunney was the man, so he contacted Davis, who had been living at St. Paul, Minn. &#9632;

The Jets now are determined to make the second half of Daley&rsquo;s plan materialize.A year ago the Jets finished in third place in the Northern Division and far out of the running. They did make the playoffs and then were eliminated in three straight games by Long Island.Daley vowed in the off-season to shake up his club and win the EHL crown this season. Well, Daley did just that and did it with a host of juniors spotting his roster. The Jets won the Northern crown almost leisurely with only a late season surge by Clinton offering any threat.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-04605/3256526-1-eng-US/f0013-042.jpg" title="f0013-04" width="310" height="454"><figcaption class="caption-body">Don Carter</figcaption></div>Now the Jets are shooting for the playoff title. They realize they first have to beat out their division rivals, but their prime target is the Greensboro team, Southern Division king, that is the defending champion. Their reasons are twofold. No. 1, the Jets figure the Generals are the biggest roadblock in their path to the crown, and secondly in six regular season meetings with the Generals, the Jets were unable to gain a victory.Now that the people of Johnstown have voiced their confidence in the team, the Jets want to repay their backing. Just recently a drive to raise $40.000 in ticket sales for next season met with success. Just about the same time the attendance took a sharp rise upward as the fans realized there was danger of losing the franchise.Now that the fans are back of them and coming out in droves unlike earlier in the campaign, the Jets want to reward this support with the EHL crown. A staunch defense and numerous scoring threats on that front line would help attain that goal.GREENSBORO: Don Carter is considered the most effective blocker and charger in the EHL, according to the Generals. Ted Lanyon, the injured defenseman, may need an off-season operation on the cartilage separation in his knee. Generals had two-all-stars in Don Davidson and Pat Kelly. Ron Quenville bothered by shoulder injury. Johnstown Eyeing Playoff Title To Fulfill Pre-Season Objective

CATHERINES, Ont.-Toronto Marlboros in first place since the start of the season finally shook off a late challenge from Montreal Canadiens to clinch the pennant in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A League.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-05497/3256557-1-eng-US/f0013-052.jpg" title="f0013-05" width="602" height="971"><figcaption class="caption-body">Andre Boudrias</figcaption></div>The Dukes, with Rod Seiling back in the lineup after his trip to Europe with the Canadian Olympic team and subsequent trade to New York Rangers, trounced Kitchener Rangers 12-0 and followed that up with a 7-3 win in Montreal less than 24 hours to end the Canadiens last hopes of catching them.Seiling after a one-game trial with the Rangers against Chicago, returned to the Marlboros to complete his junior career.The Canadiens, two weeks ago were assured finishing no lower than second while St. Cathar-ines Black Hawks clinched third place with a 6-0 shutout over Peterborough. Niagara Falls ended fourth, Peterborough fifth and Oshawa Generals sixth to set up the post-season playoff round.Oshawa will meet St. Cathar-ines in the first round of the playoffs, the Marlboros will play the fourth place team Niagara Falls, while the Canadiens face the fifth place Petes.Hamilton ended seventh, and Kitchener eighth and both clubs missed the post-season games.If the 1963-&rdquo; &rsquo; schedule proved nothing else it was the now-defunct Toronto Metro Junior A league was not as weak as many observers believed.Both clubs which joined the provincial league from the Metro, the Marlboros and Oshawa Generals, did exceptionally well.The Marlies led from the first week of the schedule while Oshawa displaced two of last year&rsquo;s Ontario league members in the playoffs, Hamilton and Kitchener.The Ontario junior A council, composed of representatives of all eight teams, decided on best-of-seven playoffs in all rounds.The winner of the Marlboro vs. Niagara Falls series will draw a bye into the finals. The survivors of the St. Catharines-Oshawa and Montreal-Peterborough quarter-finals will meet in a semi-final round before entering the finals.Nothing is as uncertain as junior hockey playoffs and up-sets could be in the making in any of the rounds.Especially difficult to gauge is the St. Catharines-Oshawa series.Although the Black Hawks finished almost 20 points ahead of the Generals they have won only two and lost six with their playoff opponents this season. The young but willing Generals headed by high-scoring Ron Buchanan and their 16-year-old defence sensation Bobby Orr, could be the dark horse.Andre Boudrias of Mont-real Canadiens won the individual scoring title for the second time in three seasons when he finished with 135 points. Teammate Yvan Cournoyer ended second with 110.Cournoyer shot 63 goals making him the third highest goal scorer ever in the OHA. Brian Cullen, then with St. Catharines, tallied 68 while George Armstrong registered 64 for Stratford many years ago. &#9632;

The schedule was to end March 22.Both the Knights and Bruins used new goalies on the &lsquo;big night&rsquo; for Omaha in the Minneapolis rink.In the nets for Omaha was Jean Guy Morissette. The 5-6, 140pound backup goaler for the Canadiens was making his first appearance in an Omaha jersey and it was impressive.Morissette is in his first year of pro hockey. He played for Moncton in the Maritime Hockey League last year. Jean Guy suffered a broken cheekbone in practice last November &hellip; the morning after he had gone into the nets for Canadiens when Gump Worsley was injured.Meanwhile, Ernie Wakely had been burning up the league with his outstanding goaltending. The Canadiens were also coming down to the wire in the NHL pennant race &hellip; neck and neck with the Chicago Black Hawks, The call went out to Omaha from Montreal: &ldquo;Send Wakely to Chicago Mar. 1 for the game. We want an experienced and proven netminder standing by in case of injury to Charlie Hodge.&rdquo; The Knights responded by sending Wakely to the NHL team.MINNEAPOLIS&mdash;The Bruins had a four game winning streak snapped Mar. 1 when the Knights came off the ice with a 10-3 victory. Coach Harry Sin-den&rsquo;s crew is looking good in front of their new netminder, Andre Gill. The standby goal-tender for Hershey in the American League is on loan to the Bruins subject to immediate recall. Forward Bill Irvine was brought up from junior A to play for the Bruins.ST. PAUL &mdash; Right wing Gary Sabourin is skating with the Rangers. The 21-year-old is up from Kitchener of the OHA. Coach Fred Shero is still figuring on being above third place when the gun sounds ending regular season play. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re skating better, checking harder and winning those crucial games now and I think we can make it,&rdquo; says the long time St. Paul coach.ST. Al (Boom Boom) Caron scored his 61st goal of campaign when he tied the score at 2-alI midway through third period.CINCINNATI &mdash; Jim Peters has been scoring consistently since coming up from the Hamilton Red Wings of the OHA. Nick Libbet was also called up from Hamilton and picked up his first assist in a pro game when the Wings beat Omaha 4-2 the last week in February. St. Louis, Minneapolis, St. Paul Set For Three-Way Stretch ‘Showdown’

<div class="byline">BY BOB REED</div>WINDSOR, Ont.The Windsor Bulldogs, fighting for a playoff spot in the International Hockey League, acquired their third different coach this season when it was announced that one of the all-time team favorites, Lou Bendo, would be bench coach for the remainder of the season.Bendo agreed to take over the position at the insistence of new general manager Jim Kimmerly following the surprise resignation of playing coach Irwin Gross, who will remain as a player.The sudden shift came as the Bulldogs prepared for an important run of games. In his first two stints as coach. <div class="byline">BY LOUIS FUSK</div>QUEBEC, P.Q.As Quebec Aces head toward their first play-off series in their five years in the American Hockey League, attracting record-breaking crowds in the process, the burden of building up talent for the future has become an absorbing task.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-01633/3256802-1-eng-US/f0016-012.jpg" title="f0016-01" width="258" height="453"><figcaption class="caption-body">Camille Henry</figcaption></div>Aces have a farm system, but to date it has failed to supply one player to the parent AHL team. Ambitious plans are being formulated for the future.Paul Dumont, 43, a dedicate-ed hockey man for the past 25 years, is director of Aces&rsquo; farm system which consists of Citadels and Aces Jr., members of the Quebec Provincial Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; Hockey League and agreements with the Canadian Tire and Repair team champions of the O.T.J. arena Juvenile Leagues; with juvenle teams in Shawinigan, Montreal and Sherbrooke and with Junior &ldquo;B&rdquo; teams in Thetford Mines and Richmond, P.Q.Aces officials plan to apply for a franchise in the Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; Ontario Hockey Association next year. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t get the competition in the Quebec &ldquo;A&rdquo; League to develop players for pro hockey. We have to send our star players like Rene Drolet and Andre Lacroix, to Montreal Canadiens Jr. to provide them with the competition necessary to develop into players of pro calibre. We have a number of players ready to play in the Ontario Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; league, and we can recall them if we are granted a franchise.&rdquo; commented Dumont.Should Aces be accepted in the Ontario League, their farm system will consist of their Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; team, one local Junior &ldquo;B&rdquo; League and agreement with a number of teams spread throughout the Province.Dumont related that Aces have spent more than $100,000 in four years on their Provincial Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; teams and they still have to develop a player for the parent club.Dumont has been Aces farm director for the past five years. He has some 150 players under his charge and he keeps up a complete file on each. In addition to his vast amount of paper work, he scouts players, speaks at service clubs, does a certain amount of broadcasting, and still finds time to manage the Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament, Inc.<div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0016-02549/3256795-1-eng-US/f0016-022.jpg" title="f0016-02" width="512" height="943"><figcaption class="caption-body">PAUL DUMONT &hellip; 25 Years In Hockey</figcaption></div>As vice-president of the Pee Wee Corporation, Dumont devotes about one month a year toward making it click. The Pee Wees are small but it&rsquo;s big business and this year&rsquo;s eight-day event attracted 137,681 customers.In connection with the Pee Wees, Dumont stated: &ldquo;The tournament is just about over and already we&rsquo;ve received 16 applications from new clubs for the 1965 event. The calibre of play in this tournament is really impressive.&rdquo;Dumont is a bachelor, which is just as well. He is employed in the General Purchasing Branch of the Executive Council Ministry of the Provincial Government, which keeps him occupied during the day. For seven nights a week, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. he is in his office at the Coliseum, and naturally all day Saturday and Sunday throughout the hockey season.In the off season he spends his spare time straightening out cards, compiling statistices, visiting prospective players, and visiting parents in connection with transfers, making out reports. &ldquo;Sure. I devote plenty of time to hockey, but I feel it is not enough. Sometime I take a breather during July,&rdquo; he laughs.Eighty percent of the 150 players under his supervision are students. Nobody receives a salary, but students have their room, board and schooling paid. &ldquo;When we sign a young player we advise him that if he expects to make money in junior hockey, he had better not to come to Quebec. Despite everything we seldom have trouble signing prospects. They all appear eager to come to QuebecDumont will be celebrating his 25th year in hockey next September and over all those years he has had experience in practically every branch of the game. &ldquo;I played hockey as a juvenile, but I was no good at it, and mostly sat on the bench,&rdquo; he admitted. He also turned his hand to refereeing but most of his activities has been confined to the executive end of the game.When Quebec Aces joined the American Hockey League five years ago, Dumont took over the important post of farm director.One of his proteges, from the Victoria Junior Club was Gilles Tremblay, now with Montreal Canadiens. It was Dumont who recommended him to Montreal Junior Canadiens, where he played with the Hull-Ottawa entry. Camille Henry. Michel Labadie and Jacques Marcotte are other pro players who worked under Dumont. &#9632;
