Muskegon Spurts Out Of Cello In Bid To Land Playoff Berth
MUSKEGON, Mich.— Latest team Latest team to make an upward move in the unpredi c t a b 1 e International Hockey League race was Muskegon. The Zephyrs-staged a spurt that carried them from last place to within one point of fourth before they were halted, at least temporarily. In this stretch the Zephyrs won seven out of nine games. They had a winning streak of four going w’hen they were stopped by Port Huron, 2-0. And it was the same Port Huron club that had inflicted their only other loss in the nine-game span, an overtime 4-3 win. The shutout by the Flags broke a record string of non-shutouts for the Zephyrs, who set a league record of 142 games without being blanked. Father Bauer’s Hockey Squad Fourth, Russia Wins Friction-Filled Games
INNSBRUCK, Austria — Canada’s bid to recover Olympic hockey glory failed as the 1964 Winter Games came to a close here Feb. 9 but Canadian coach Father David Bauer said he hoped the practice of a truly amateur type team to represent Canada would continue in the future. “I hope we as a nation will cooperate from now on in this venture of playing true amateurs in this competition,” said Father Bauer. Meanwhile, Canada’s attempt to win the Gold Medal fell flat as the Russians came through to defeat the young Canadians 3-2 in their climactic game and finish the Olympic tournament without a defeat. Stan Mikita Chicago Black Hawks Stan Mikita is heading for his best National Hockey League season as a scorer and as a player. The rugged centre of the Chicago Black Hawks continues to put the puck in the net with consistency and contributes heavily to the Hawks’ powe play, which allows him to accumulate the assists. As the result, Mikita is leading the NHL scoring race with 70 points. The all-star Chicago pivot has 30 goals in 54 games and is rapidly catching up to teammate Bobby Hull in their race to win goal-getting honors. Hull has 33. — ROCHESTER. N. Y. The short space of 15 days saw the Rochester Americans’ defense dwindle from undoubtedly one of the best ever assembled outside of the National Hockey League to a one-man staff. When the Amerks took the ice here against Pittsburgh on Jan. 17, they were blessed with a quartet consisting of Al Arbour I American Hockey League AllStar first team choice last year!, Larry Hillman (AHL All-Star and winner of the league’s outstanding defenseman award in 1959-60>, Kent Douglas (AHL All-Star and the circuit’s outstanding blueliner in 1961 62) and Don Cherry, a heady veteran of American League warfare.
