Beliveau Leads ‘Hart’ Race; Wharram Tops ‘Byng’ Voting MONTREAL, QUE. - Chicago and Montreal players swept the board in the voting for the National Hockey League’s four individual trophies at the halfway mark in the 1963-64 schedule. Canadiens’ big centre Jean Beliveau led the balloting for the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL while Jacques Laperriere, a rangy defenseman with the Canucks, set the pace for the Ken Wharram ; Calder trophy rookie award voting. The two Black Hawk players, right winger Ken Wharram, was the leader in the Lady Byng Trophy voting as the most gentlemanly player ; in the NHL and rearguard Pierre Pilote emerged as the Norris Trophy pace-setter as the loop’s ; outstanding defenseman. Other raps are that he fails to backcheck consistently and his failure to emerge as a leader since being appointed captain at the start of the 1961-62 season … Recently Rangers downed Toronto, 3-2, and most of the Ranger players swarmed around Goalie Jacques Plante as is the custom after a big win. WINNIPEG, Man. To say Vince Leah, the man who has become known as “Uncle Vince’’ to two generations of Manitoba youngsters, is a hockey pioneer would be a mastery of understatement. Uncle Vince unquestionably is one of this country’s foremost men in hockey, but during the 36 years he has been associated with hockey he has also been much more. Tens of thousands of Manitoba’s small fry have received their start in hockey under the bushy-browed eye of Vince. More than 40 have gone on to professional careers and several of those have made it big in the National Hockey League. Bobby Hull Chicago Black Hawks Bobby Hull of Chicago Black Hawks, with seven goals in his last six games, is 10 goals ahead of the 1961-62 pace when he tied the National Hockey League record of 50 goals in one season. Hull scored tive goals in three games last week, including three in a row for a genuine ‘hat trick’ against Detroit. It was the sixth three-goal performance in the league this season and Hull’s second. He now has had 11 games in which he scored at least three times during his NHL career. Hull s five goals give him 28 for the season after 41 games, compared to 18 at the same stage in 1961-62.
