Harry Howell Keeps Calgary Ice Loop Going On Shoestring
CALGARY, Alta.— The Big Six Hockey League (which hasn’t always been able to live up to its name by icing exactly six teams) has provided Southern Alberta hockey fans with a lot of entertainment over the years. It’s a fair-to-middling amateur league which has always attracted a lot of journeymen hockey players, and several of exceptional ability, all of whom pay more than lip service to the credo that the game’s the thing. And the league, too, has always served up a tasty treat in this Blue Law country—Sunday hockey. For years the Sunday afternoon doubleheaders in the Corral were a must for thousands of fans who rather enjoyed the silver collection fashion of admittance fee. But silver collections aren’t generally synonymous with lush bank accounts, and this is where Harry Bowell fits so…

PASSING THE PUCK
• CHICAGO—PENALTIES had proven the downfall of the Detroit Red Wings in the first two games of the semi-finals played here… Four of Chicago’s five goals in the Hawks’ 5-2 win were scored with Detroit shorthanded… Six of the 10 goals scored by the Hawks in the first two games resulted from a manpower advantage… The irrepressible Howie Young nas hurt the Wings far more than he has helped them.… Eric Nesterenko, fast becoming the favorite of Hawk fans in this series, has done a masterful job thus far in bottling up the great Gordie Howe. Nester has stuck to Howe like glue and his close checking and constant shadowing is starting to irritate big Gord… Detroit’s Bruce MacGregor felt badly about accidentally breaking Bobby Hull’s nose with his stick…

Lee Fogolin Leads Port Arthur Cats To Senior Crown
FORT WAYNE, Ont.— The Port Arthur Bearcats are the senior champions of the Thunder Bay once again this year. They went right down to the wire with the league champion Fort Williams Beavers, and won the seventh and deciding game by a score of 6-3. A great deal of the credit for the Bearcats victory must go to coach Lee Fogolin who returned to their lineup at the end of the season, when the Bearcats were probably having their worst season in years. He seemed to pick them up and give them the spark that they needed to beat the rejuvenated Beavers. Suspensions were the order of the day in the junior and senior playoffs. Three deliberate attempts to injure penalties in Fort Frances cause the suspensions of three Junior players. Russ Poole, the…

Arbour Set For 12th Playoff Start, Shares M VP Honors With Ehman
ROCHESTER, N.Y.— If history repeats, the Rochester Americans still will be around when the Calder Cup is handed out later this month. When the Amerks debuted in the American Hockey League back in 1956-57, they went all the way to the final series before bowing out of the activity. The Americans didn’t even qualify for the playoffs the next season, lost in the first round in 1958-59, were finalists in ’59-60, didn’t make the playoff grade the following year and were first round losers last spring. That brings us to the next stop on the cycle—a Calder Cup finalist. Participating in post-season playoffs has become quite a habit for Rochester defenseman Al Arbour. In fact, the talented blue liner is finishing his 11th season in pro hockey by playing in his 12th playoff series. That’s…
