Nine Canadian Collegians On U.S. All-American Teams
BOSTON, Mass.— Nine Canadians—including Montreal goalkeeper Richie Broadbent—and three Americans comprise the 1962-63 All-America college squad selected by the coaches of United States college teams at their annual meeting here. West—Goal, Gary Bauman, Michigan Tech; Defense, Don Ross, North Dakota, Lou Nanne, Minnesota; Fordwards, George Hill, Michigan Tech, Bill Staub, Denyer, Dave Merrifield and Al McLean (tied), North Dakota. East—Goal, Richie Broadbent, St. Lawrence; Defense, Dave Johnston, Harvard, Cal Wagner and Pat Brophy (tied), Clarkson; Forwards, Bob Brinkworth, RPI, DAVE Fryeberger, Middlebury, Jack Leetch, Boston College. Johnston and Fryberger were members of last year’s squad which included Gordon “Red” Berenson of Michigan, now with the Montreal Canadiens. Arbour Set For 12th Playoff Start, Shares M VP Honors With Ehman
ROCHESTER, N.Y.— If history repeats, the Rochester Americans still will be around when the Calder Cup is handed out later this month. When the Amerks debuted in the American Hockey League back in 1956-57, they went all the way to the final series before bowing out of the activity. The Americans didn’t even qualify for the playoffs the next season, lost in the first round in 1958-59, were finalists in ’59-60, didn’t make the playoff grade the following year and were first round losers last spring. That brings us to the next stop on the cycle—a Calder Cup finalist. Participating in post-season playoffs has become quite a habit for Rochester defenseman Al Arbour. Hall Of Fame Member, Ernie Johnson Dies At 77
WHITE ROCK, B.C.— Ernie (Moose) Johnson, 77, a member of hockey’s Hall of Fame, died at this resort town 30 miles south of Vancouver on March 25. Johnson, a defenseman, played on three Stanley Cup champion teams, Montreal Wanderers of 1907, 1908 and 1910. A native of Montreal, he joined Wanderers in 1906 and in 1912 moved to New Westminster Royals. He stayed with the club when the franchise was moved to Portland and led Portland to the league title in 1915-16. Later, he played with Victoria and Los Angeles, retiring in 1931. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in recent years.…
