NHL Doubles Players’ Bonus Money
The Hockey News THE INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY WEEKLY MONTREAL, Que.— More bonus or incentive money is being awarded to National Hockey League players this season by the league than ever before. The 1962-63 season will be a real boanza for the players money-wise. A total of $220,000 will be poured into the players’ pockets. Bonus money presented to those making the All-Star teams or winning one of the six trophies awarded for outstanding individual achievement has been doubled this season. For the first time in history the NHL will hand out cheques of $500 each to players making the first All-Star team at the half-way mark of the season and cheques for $250 to players earning positions on the second squad. Fleming Finding It Hard To Avoid Trouble
CHICAGO, III.— Chicago’s volatile Red Fleming continues to be cast in the role of the ’Reluctant Dragon’. And the emphasis is on both words. A total of $250 in fines for fighting and misconducts plus 145 minutes in penalty time his rookie season have combined with the maturity of three years of National Hockey League play to make him somewhat reluctant to go looking for trouble. At the same time his size 17 bull neck, his aggressive spark and his low boiling point continue to make Tempestuous Reg a fighting Dragon on the NHL rinks. His high sticking incident with Montreal’s Gilles Tremblay which drew a three-game suspension for both players and his recent triplefight night in Toronto with Bobby Baun and rookie Kent Douglas (twice) attest to the dragon instinct In “The Horse”. The Black…
Playing the field
(As Seen In The Montreal Gazette) The Big Switch No matter which team finishes first in the National Hockey League tandings, Manager-Coach Punch Imlach thinks his Toronto Maple Leafs will retain the Stanley Cup. Punch and his alter ego, King Clancy, discussed the current hockey situation during a recent visit to Montreal. “But we’re going to finish first in the league standings,” King declared. “There’s a lot of prestige goes with it.” There’s the matter of money, too, though no reference was made to it, and if the players are now placing prestige ahead of money, this is the biggest switch since the rubber puck replaced the old wooden one. What’s more, when coaches exhort their charges to greater efforts, they always mention money but never prestige. You can’t fold the latter commodity and…
Bucyk, Williams Take Individual Hub Team Awards
BOSTON, Mass.— Johnny Bucyk and Tom Williams of the Bruins have been voted longstanding awards for their play this season. Bucyk, the 27-year-old wing and alternate captain who has been the Bruins scoring leader for most of the season, has been awarded the Elizabeth C. Dufresne Trophy as the team’s outstanding player in home games. Williams, 22-year-old native of Duluth, Minn., who was on the verge of being optioned to a minor league team when Milt Schmidt became coach of the Bruins last fall, is the winner of the Boston Garden Gallery Gods Award. Bucyk and Williams, a right wing, have been playing with Murray Oliver as one of the National League’s highest scoring lines. The two forwards are scheduled to receive their awards before the Bruins’ final game here with the Chicago Black Hawks.…
