Stasiuk Gets Another Chance In NHL After ’Player Committee’Gives Nod
DETROIT, Mich.— Sid Abel’s habit of consulting his veterans is one executive suite maneuver that Vic Stasiuk can’t say enough for… it brought the 33-year-old forward back to the NHL. Abel, making plans for the final weeks of the season and the playoffs, asked Gordie Howe, Bill Gadsby, Marcel Pronovost and Alex Delvecchio their opinion on the move and all thought Stasiuk would help the club. “I really didn’t think I’d be back up,” Stasiuk said. “The former Uke Line star, who helped Detroit to the Stanley Cup finals two seasons ago when obtained from Boston during the season, had two tries with the Wings this term and wasn’t able to stick. He played the first 21 games and scored only two goals while assisting on five others. When Detroit acquired Andre Pronovost from Boston,…
Omaha Goalie Ramsay Named IHL All-Star For 4th Time
FORT WAYNE, Ind.— Omaha defenseman Moe Benoit and Fort Wayne’s “Steady Eddie” Long topped the International Hockey League’s all-star balloting, with a unanimous ten points. Long, a right winger, is currently second in the IHL in goals with 48. Glenn Rawsay, Omaha’s goalie, won first all-star team honors for the fourth time since the 1956-57 campaign. For this, Ramsay receives the James Norris Memorial Trophy. Completing the IHL’s “dream team” are Gerry Glaude, Muskegon, defense; Ken Saunders, Minneapolis, center; Bill LeCaine, Port Huron; left wing. Long and teammate Len Thomson were tied in the voting for the Gatschene Trophy, for the player best combining sportsmanship with outstanding playing ability. Ramsay, Glaude and Long were the only repeaters from the 1961-62 first all-star team. Second-team selections included: Goal, Chuck Adamson, Fort Wayne; defense: Cy Whiteside, Minneapolis, and…
Creighton Returns Quick Dividend For New Clippers As Top Scorer
BALTIMORE, Md.— It is fitting that Center Dave Creighton should make a runaway of the Baltimore Clippers’ scoring honors this season. The 33-year-old Creighton was the first full-fledged member to board new Clipper ship. All others came along with outside ownership strings attached. However, Dave has rewarded his Baltimore purchasers with a scoring output that almost doubles the effort of anyone else on the squad. Creighton admits: “I’m sure it’s been my best season ever.” Two reasons stand out why Creighton has clicked as a Clipper. They are: (1)—The confidence of his coach in giving a free reign to use his own pace and style. And (2)—The opportunity for a lot of ice time. In addition to working overtime as a member of the club’s first line, Dave served as a penalty killer all season. And…
