Doctors Hopeful Fontinato’s Career Not Finished After Breaking Neck
MONTREAL, Que.— The violent world of Lou Fontinato came crashing down on the likeable Montreal Canadiens’ defenseman this past week and while many were ready to write off his hockey career after a broken neck, there is speculation among the medics close to the rugged NHL star that he will recover and come back next season. The sad incident that struck the Canadiens’ 195-pound rearguard was the worst single injury to befall a National Hockey Leaguer in many years. Fontinato fell head-long into me backboards at the Montreal Forum the night of March 9 while trying to retrieve a puck with Hangers’ Vic Hadfield in pursuit. Halifax, Moncton Trudge Rocky Trail To Finals
NEW GLASGOW, N.S.— Moncton Hawks, unwilling to be the “fall guys” of a Cinderella drama in the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League playoffs, drew first blood in the loop finals to become favorites to replace the now defunct Amherst Ramblers as league champions. Hawks were hardpressed in the semi-finals by New Glasgow Rangers, who had listened intently as coach Leo Amadio erad them the fabled story to his hirelings. Rangers, despite heavy odds against them, managed to get Cinderella to the ball but she never met her prince. The underdogs threw a scare into the Hawks by taking the fifth game of the series at Moncton — the first time New Glasgow won there in 11 starts this season.
