Rookie Rearguards Red-Faced As Miscues Lead To Big Goals

MONTREAL, Que.— A rookie’s life isn’t always a pleasant one in the National Hockey League. At times life can even be embarrassing. Take the cases of Lou Marcon of Detroit and Terry Harper of Montreal. Both came into the NHL last week from minor league teams as emergency replacements and both suffered the ignomity of giving up a goal they could have avoided. Marcon, filling in for the belligerent Howie Young with the Detroit Red Wings, tripped little Camille Henry during a game last Tuesday and the tiny Ranger centre proceeded to score on a penalty shot. It was one of three goals Henry counted that particular night but the sore part of it all for Marcon, was the penalty shot proved to be the Rangers’ margin in a 4-3 victory over the…

Van Impe Makes Big Return After Six-Game Suspension

CLEVELAND, Ohio— Dick Van Impe, recently set down by American Hockey League President James G. Balmer for six games, returned to action on February 24 and the Cleveland Barons won a game. That could have been just coincidence. It could have meant nothing at all. On the other hand, it could have, and probably did, mean that Van Impe is a big man to the Barons. When the six-game suspension was meted out to Van Impe for using Referee Dalton McArthur for bumping practice in a game in Pittsburgh, the Barons were flying high and had hopes, even if somewhat dim ones, of catching the Buffalo Bisons before the AHL schedule had run its course. During Van Impe’s absence, the Barons won only two games and lost four, two to Buffalo. Whatever chance they…

Hull, Mikita “Still Friendly” Despite Scoring Battle

CHICAGO, III.— Stan Mikita is wearing the biggest “hat” in the National Hockey League these days. The Chicago Black Hawk “Scooter Line” center has suddenly cornered the market on three-goal “hat tricks”—coming up with two in Chicago’s last three games and three in their last 11 games. Mikita, the NHL All-Star senter last season at the age of 21 and also at the midpoint this year, took over the NHL individual scoring leadershap as of Feb. 26 with his sudden goal spurt. His 28 goals and 37 assists put him one point ahead of Gordie Howe of Detroit with 65 total points. Stan tied for third with Howe in the scoring race last season with 77 points on 25 goals and 52 assists, behind teammate Bobby Hull and New York’s Andy Bathgate. Mikita got the…

Frank Smith ‘Mr. Hockey’ Of Toronto Metro Area

TORONTO, Ont.— There’s no question at all about who Mr. Hockey is here in the Queen City. It’s Frank D. Smith who organized the Toronto Hockey League 51 years ago when he was 17. Today, in its 52nd season, it’s providing hockey competition for 25,000 boys in the broad area encompassed by Metropolitan Toronto. By spring, 38,400 THL matches will have been played. It’s the largest hockey league in the world and one of the biggest sports organizations. Smitty retired last summer after 51 seasons as general secretary and treasurer of the THL, turning the immense job over to Bill Glover. Smith, 68, now devotes all his time to his regular job as vice president of the International Photo Engravers’ Union and treasurer of the Toronto local. Toronto is a stronghold of hockey today…
