FORT WILLIAM, Ont.— To open minor hockey week officially at the Lakehead the old timers of the 1939 season were brought out of retirement for a game. Three thousand people turned out at the Fort William Gardens to witness the sensational show put on by the hockey greats of yearteryear. Such old pros as Edgar Laprade, Pete Bakor, Bob Drainville and Stan Robertson all showed that old savvy that made them big stars in pro hockey … It would be hard to single out any one individual as the star of the evening. CLEVELAND, Ohlo— Seldom does his name creep into the scoring column, rarely does he draw a penalty and never, never does he get into a fight, but venerable red-thatched Tommy Williams continues to be one of the most amazing members of what is coming to be recognized as a somewhat amazing hockey team, the Cleveland Barons. The once-meek, now-roaring Barons, showing definite signs of challenging Buffalo for top spot in the American Hockey League’s Western Division, are doing it on a combination of potent scoring, sensational goaltending and improved defensive play. Most amazing performer of all on defense is the bespectacled Williams.
