‘Pit’ Martin First Hamilton Player To Reach 100-Goal Mark

HAMILTON, Ont.— Hubert ‘Pit’ Martin, short but husky McMaster University student, became the first junior “A” player in Hamilton history to score 100 goals. Martin reached the milestone in St. Catharines when he scored twice to lift his total to the century mark as the Red Wings registered an important 6-3 win over the Black Hawks. Seemingly headed for a slump after losing two games on successive nights to the league-leading Niagara Falls Flyers, the Wings came back to defeat St. Catharines and increase their margin to five points over the fifth place Hawks. The loss was the first in three games for St. Catharines and followed a double win over the faltering former league leaders the Montreal Canadiens. CHICAGO, Ill.— All-Star center Stan Mikita has been benched by Chicago Coach Rudy Pilous twice in the past week. The first time it was for lack of hustle in the Dec.30 game against Boston. Mikita also failed to hustle in the Jan. 6 loss to Toronto (5-1) and was on the ice only a few times over the final 30 minutes. Pilous, however, revealed this time Mikita had a cold and almost didn’t start.…

Ed Johnston Not Dismayed By Overwork

BOSTON, Mass.— One of the most arduous jobs in major league hockey must be tending goal for the Bruins. But 27-year-old Eddie Johnston is only too delighted to take the risks involved. Since mid-December, Johnston has been the Bruins’ regular goalkeeper. That, and not the many busy evenings he has put in since is what interests him. “Some people seem to think that just because I’ve been having a lot of saves I should be unhappy with my job,” said Johnston, a sharp-featured, black-haired native of Montreal. “Heck, nothing could be farther from the truth. I’m playing, and that’s what matters to me. “So the other teams have been getting quite a few shots on the net against us,” said Johnston. “So what? That saves business can be overrated. “Most goalkeepers like to keep busy to keep…
