Bruins Boast Three U.S. Players
MONTREAL, Que.— Pick the name of a National Hockey League player at random. Chances are better than 60-40 he’s from Ontario or Quebec. A survey of the six NHL teams shows there are 104 players who could be classified as regulars, and 63 of them come from the two central provinces. Ontario leads with 36, and Quebec follows with 27. Five players were born outside Canada, three of them in the United States, and all three are with the Boston Bruins. They are Charlie Burns (Detroit), Tom Williams (Duluth, Minn.) and Wayne Hicks (Aberdeen, Wash.). Two members of the Chicago Black Hawks, Jack Evans from Garnant, Wales, and Stan Mikita, from Soholce, Czechoslovakia, round out the foreign players.…
Blades’ Team Bus Plunges Off Highway In Tennessee
NASHVILLE. Tenn. The New Haven Blades arrived here for an Eastern Hockey League game against Nashville Dixie Flyers Dec. 12 after their bus everturned sending one player to hospital and forcing another 13 to submit to medical treatment. Blades coach, Wally Kullman said he was driving the team bus near Sparta, Tenn., Sunday night Dec. 9 when the rear wheel came off and he deliberately rammed the vehicle into the side of a mountain because of a 100-foot drop on the opposite side of the road. The bus landed on its side after striking a tree. Kullman said one player. Fern Bernaquez, suffered head cuts and injuries to the neck and back and was taken to hospital. Scoring Pace Off In Early NHL Race
MONTREAL, Que.— Despite the tremendous scoring surge shown by Frank Mahovlich, Gordie Howe, Parker MacDonald and both the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, the National Hockey League is actually running behind its’ 1961-62 scoring performance. It was revealed this week that the six NHL teams counted a total of 486 goals in 88 games this season as compared to 520 in a corresponding 86 games last year. At this time last season in the schedule, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs had both topped the 100-goal mark. This year the high-scoring Leafs lead the NHL teams with 93. NHL figure filberts attribute the decline to better goalkeeping by Terry Sawchuk, Jacques Plante, Glenn Hall and the Toronto combo Of Johnny Bower and Don Simmons.
