Calgary, Edmonton Showing Signs Of Becoming Playoff Contenders; Buckaroos Pulling Away In South

VANCOUVER, B.C.— Edmonton Flyers and Calgary Stampeders are starting to make motions like Western Hockey League contenders and, despite a lowly standing at present, It would appear there are better days ahead. Neither club has been able to come up with any remarkable success on the road, but lately they have shown signs of being more than adequate at home. The road wins will come later, they insist. The Stampeders and Flyers each had fun at the expense of the league leading Seattle Totems, who climbed into a four-point lead over Vancouver Canucks on the strength of having played four extra games. The Totems were on a prairie trip and had been doing quite well until they bumped into the Stampeders. The latter came up with one of their best performances of the season…

MacNeil-Hillman Exciting New Defense Tandem

CHICAGO, Illinois— Take one rookie defenseman who spent three seasons at Buffalo where his play was often disappointing. Take another defenseman who has been in and out of the National Hockey League since 1955 and who couldn’t make it as a regular with Montreal or Toronto. Their names are Wayne Hillman and Al McNeil. Put them together at Chicago and you have one of the best new defense tandems in the NHL in several years. The rookie Is Hillman. He was a standout for two seasons in the Ontario Hockey Association but when the parent Black Hawks brought him up to Buffalo for the 1958-59 season his play was disappointing. In fact he was used sparingly his first two years there. Most observers blamed it on his attitude and his lack of confidence. Hillman got…

Baluik’s Rousing Getaway Gives Reds Lift

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Stan Baluik, unnoticed, unheralded centerman of the Rhode Inland Reds, has once again quietly assumed a leading role in the aspirations and efforts of the Providence sextet. Baluik, 27-year-old pivot who is owned by the Boston Bruins, is currently in his fourth season with the Reds, and is, at this writing, making a strong bid for his third team scoring title. The smooth-passing pivot, with 10 goals and 18 assists, has finally wrestled away the club scoring lead from capable Larry Leach, and at the same time is engineering the fabulous “B-line” to goal after goal. Stan, traditionally a slow beginner, is off to his best start in pro hockey. Last season at this same time, he had only 5 scores and 15 assists. It was only a fantastic late season splurge…

Sawchuk Ignores Injury To Save Wings’ Win

DETROIT, Meh.— Terry Sawchuk as a pinch hitter is just as good as Terry Sawchuk as a regular … even with a sore shoulder. Sawchuk, being spelled by Red Wing alternate goalie Dennis Riggin, had to leave his press-box seat and sub for his sub in a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs when Riggin tore a groin muscle trying to stop Dave Keon on a breakaway. Riggin had only a very painful injury to show for it as Keon, killing a penalty, scored on the shot. Riggin who had a 1-1-1 record in three games while Sawchuk was disabled, had to be half-carried and half-skated off the ice and the prediction was that he would be out at least three weeks. Sawchuk had a badly bruised shoulder, the result of a close-in deflection by…
