Sawchuk Shows Ice Stars Human Saves Topper With Goaling Glove
BOSTON, Mass.— Terry Sawchuk of the Detroit Red Wings has made himself a candidate for a sportsmanship award as the result of an incident in a Bruins-Detroit game here. The Detroit goalkeeper risked costing his team a goal to prevent possible serious injury to Jerry Toppazzini of the Bruins. Toppazzini was knocked to the ice in the Detroit crease by Defenseman Howie Young as the Bruins pressed for a score. As the Bruins’ forward struggled to rise, Sawchuk suddenly covered his former teammate’s head with his big goalkeeper’s glove, shouting, “Look out !” For a full 10 seconds Toppazzini sprawled on the ice, wearing the leather head covering, until a whistle stopped play for a penalty to Young. “Terry told me I was lifting my head right into the path of a skate,” said the…
Senior Opener Ends In Draw For Bearcats
FORT WILLIAM, Ont.— Murray Marcino, captain of the Port Arthur North Stars, has taken the early lead in the individual scoring race in Thunder Bay junior hockey. He has six goals and nine assists for fifteen points and his nine assists also give him the lead in that department. Joe Gottfred of the Hurricanes and Gary Veneruzzo of the Canadiens are next in line with eleven points. Ken Campbell of the Canadiens is fourth with ten points. Lorne Carusso of the North Stars is the League bad man with thirty minutes in penalties and Dennis Gibson of the Stars leads the goaltenders with a 2.33 average. A miserable last in 1961-62, the Canucks were expected to be better this year if only because they couldn’t be any worse. But with a new owner, former mayor Fred J. Hume, a new coach, Max McNab, and several new races, the club has been the terror of the league in early games. Playing mostly against the southern division teams in the first month, Canucks compiled a six game win streak at the start and had an 8-2 record after 10 games.
