Wing’s Gordie Howe Branches Out Launches New Project—A Hockey Rink
DETROIT, Mich.— Gordie Howe is branching out…Howe, who has a business with Detroit Tiger baseball star Al Kaline, is a partner in a new hockey rink that opened this fall…“It’s only a couple feet shorter and a few feet narrower than the Olympia rink,” Howe said. Called “Gordie Howe’s Hockeyland,” the rink already is getting heavy booking. The cars still are the stars in Detroit…The Wings, unbeaten, drew 9,919 for their game with Chicago on a Sunday while the National Auto Show drew 194,000 at downtown Cobo Hall the same day. Another businessman is ex-Red Wing Warren Godfrey, now with the Bruins. Godfrey still makes his home in suburban Detroit and while in with the Bruins, had several of his former Red Wing mates out for the opening of his billiard room. Billiard play is…

• BALTIMORE—HOCKEY’S newest entry, the Baltimore Clippers, officially opened the beautiful new $14,000,000 Civic Center here last week…Seating 10,600 for hockey games this well-appointed emporium is located right in the heart of this grand old city…The publicity and enthusiasm attendant with the opening speaks volumes for the future of hockey here…and we’d like to go on record right now as stating that Baltimore will soon be one of the most successful and prosperous hockey franchises in the United States…The Clippers have a working agreement with the New York Rangers and they are most fortunate in having a good solid team for their first season in pro hockey…The Clippers will be contenders all season on the strength of the fine players on their roster…They also have one of hockey’s most knowledgeable…
Shero Overhauls St. Paul Saints Retaining Only Seven Players
ST. PAUL, Minn.— When the Muskegon Zephyrs dumped the St. Paul Saints four straight in last years International Hockey League playoffs, after the Saints had won two straight titles, Saint coach Freddie Shero decided to inject some new blood into his squad. Only seven members have been invited back off last year’s club to training camp, They include goaler Jacques Marcotte, defensemen Mickey Keating and forwards Elliott Chorley, Gilles Thibault, Dick Bouchard and Bryan Derrett. Dave Gordichuk, a high-scoring winger, who skated with Omaha in 1961-62, was obtained in a trade for John Bailey. Jean Therrien was picked up in the drafting of the Indianapolis players and Des Maroney was claimed from Minneapolis. All other pucksters coming into the Saints camp at South St. Paul, are newcomers to IHL action. Some of these players…
