Red Learns Fast, Changes Tactics To Beat ‘Gump’
MONTREAL, Que.— Gordon (Red) Berenson, the newest rookie with the Montreal Canadiens played with and against some of his present team-mates in the Memorial Cup playoffs five years ago. Bill Hicke performed alongside Berenson with the Regina Pats while Ralph Backstrom, Gilles Tremblay and Jean-Claude Tremblay were with Hull-Ottawa Junior Canadiens. Berenson is learning as he goes along. Against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden recently, he was foiled on a good scoring chance by Goalie Gump Worsley. Next time around, Red connected for the goal that gave Canadiens a 3-3 tie. “Worsley was expecting a high shot like the one he had stopped off me earlier,” explained Berenson. “So I kept this one low and the puck bounced in off Gump’s pads.”…

Maki Convinces Club They Made Right Selection
CHICAGO, Ill.— Rookie forward Chico Maki is wasting no time showing the Black Hawks made the right decision in keeping him on the Chicago squad this season. The final cut was between Maki, ex-Chicago and Detroit forward John McKenzie, and Jerry Melnyk, who was Chicago’s spare forward last season. The decision was made in Maki’s favor only a few days before the start of the regular season. Although the Chicagoans got off to a slow start, scoring only 10 goals while winning one, losing three and tying two of their first six games, Maki has made a fast getaway. Up to that point he is the leading Black Hawk scorer with two goals and two assists for four points and figured in the scoring in four of the six games the Hawks have…

Fontinato Belts Rangers’ Blue As Garden Chants ‘Get Louie’
NEW YORK, N.Y.— The fact that Lou Fontinato, Class of ‘61, is a member of the New York Ranger Alumni Association, apparently has made no impression on the large Montreal defenseman. Louie returned to the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden last week and put on one of the most irreverent displays of conduct by an alumnus seen here since his appearance last year. Having graduated Cum Laude (or is it loudly?) from Rangers to Canadiens, Fontinato has sought to sever all ties with his old buddies. In has first trip to the Garden this year, Louis assaulted various and sundry Rangers with emphasis on Dave Balon, Bronco Horvath and Camille Henry. New York patrons were particularly upset about L’ Affair Balon. Louie and the Ranger sophomore forward went into the boards together, Fontinato on…
