Howe Wins Fan—Returns For Autograph

TORONTO, Ont.— Detroit hockey star Gordie Howe has a lot of fans in the Toronto area but he probably won’t have a more staunch now on than Fred Baker, a steward at booster from the suburban Mississauga Golf Club. Baker approached Howe about signing an autograph for his son while the ice great was performing during the proamateur celebrity golf play which preceeded the regular CPGA championships. Young Richard Baker, 11, read that Howe was to be among the guests at the tournament and prevailed upon his father to bring him home an autograph when he returned from the golf club. The incident slipped Howe’s mind, so the elder Baker thought when Gordie left for home. But Howe, realizing his forgetfullness, drove back to the club several miles where Baker was still working. • DETROIT RED WINGS will play fewer pre-season exhibition games this year. Most seasons the Wings played anywhere from 10 to 15 pre-season schedule contests. This year they have scheduled eight warm-up tilts…Six of these eight exhibitions will be played in Western Canada as the Red Wings make their fifth consecutive tour through that part of Canada…“In past years we’ve played as many as 10 games on those Western swings,” stated Manager-Coach Sid Abel, “but this year we’ve shortened the trip and cut the number of games. This will give us more time to drill at Olympia during those important days just prior to the start of the season.”…For the first time in a number of years the Wings will play games in Windsor and Toledo during the training season.…
