Watson Sees Bruins Making Playoffs

BOSTON, Mass.— Phil Watson confidently predicts the Bruins will make the National Hockey League playoffs next season. To prove his point he gives two reasons: 1—improved goaltending; and 2—a strengthened defense. “The goalkeeper was our big problem last year.” Watson explained. “Goaltending is 50 percent of a club and when it is as sour as ours was at the start of the year, then you’re in trouble. “Well, we think that problem has been straightened out with the addition of Bob Perreault and Ed Johnston to go along with Bruce Gamble.” The Bruins will carry two goaltenders next winter. Which two, of course, depends upon what happens at training camp. “We know what Gamble can do,” Watson pointed out. “He improved considerably last year. We have good reports on Perreault. Veteran Jack Bownass Quits Pro Hockey After 10 Years

WINNIPEG, Man.— Jack Bownass, who has travelled through all of hockey’s minor circuits and the National League as well, has decided to retire. The 31-year-old redhead defenceman announced that he plans to devote full time to his job with a Winnipeg brewery and could not afford to take further time off during the winter months to play hockey in the East. The Winnipeg Maroons, seeking to gain a berth in the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League, said they would attempt to sign Bownass for next season since their travel committments are small compared to pro hockey clubs. Bownass performed with Kitchener of the Eastern Professional Hockey League the last two seasons. He has played pro hockey for the past 10 years and twice made it to the NHL with Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers.…

Terry Reardon Named As New Baltimore GM

BALTIMORE. Md— Terry Reardon, a former National Hockey League player who drifted into the executive end of hockey, has been named the general-manager of the new Baltimore entry in the American Hockey League. The 43-year-old Reardon, who once played with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston. Bruins in the NHL from 1940 to 1947, has been associated with the Providence Reds for the past 15 years as both coach and general manager. Reardon said he was granted an unconditional release by Providence owner Lou Pieri to take the new post. He has been GM of the Reds since 1954. “It’s not easy for me to leave Providence and the Reds.” Reardon said. “It is a great hockey team in a great city.
