Brown, Norris’ Selections Uphold Family Tradition In Hall Of Fame
MONTREAL, Que.— The selection of James D. Norris and Walter A. Brown to Hockey’s Hall of Fame has made history. Both have followed in the footsteps of illustrious fathers, to complete the first father/son combinations ever entered in the Hall of Fame records. Norris follows his dad, the late James Norris Sr., while Brown’s name is added to that of his late father, George V. Brown. All four are now members of the builders’ section of the Hall of Fame. Norris is currently co-owner and board chairman of the Chicago Black Hawks, and an N.H.L. governor. Brown holds the offices of president and director of the Boston Bruins, and is also an N.H.L. governor. Famed U.S. College Hockey Mentor To Coach West German Puck Squad
DENVER, Colo.— Vic Heyliger, veteran hockey coach and general manager of the last World Ice Hockey Championships which were held at the Broadmoor, announced today that he will accept an offer to coach the West German national hockey team starting this fall. Heyliger hung up one of the finest records of all time in college coaching when he led his Michigan University Wolverines to 10 straight national NCAA tournaments. After leaving Michigan U., he moved here to Colorado Springs to enter hockey promotion at the Broadmoor World Arena. Western Hockey Veteran Colin Kilburn Retires
SPOKANE, Wash.— Colin Kilburn, 34, playing assistant coach of the Spokane Comets Hockey Club, said he was retiring from playing hockey but would coach a senior amateur club in California. Kilburn, who played 10 seasons in the Western Hockey League including two with Spokane, said he will coach a senior amateur hoc-squad in Bakersfield, Calif., and manage public skating in a new 6,000-seat ice arena there. “The team I’ll coach will play in a league with Long Beach, Burbank and Los Angeles,” Kilburn said. Scoring Whiz Jones Returns To Portland
PORTLAND, Ore— High-scoring Bill Jones, who touched off the summer pro hockey draft controversy when he was picked off the Portland roster in what was reported as a ‘spite’ manoeuver, is back in the possession of the Western Hockey League Buckaroos. Jones, top scorer for the Buckaroos for the past two seasons, returns to Portland as the result of the club repurchasing his contract from the Montreal Canadiens, who drafted him at the summer meetings in Montreal. Managing director Harry Glickman of the Buckaroos made the announcement, adding that Jones now is Portland property “with no strings attached.” Jones won the WHL scoring championship in 1960-61 with 100 points. Last season he finished tied for third place behind Max Mekilok of Spokane and Calgary’s Norm Johnson in the scoring race. He collected 86 points.…
