Pension Fund His Proudest Deed So Far Most Trying Period Was ‘Rocket’ Riot
(This is the first of a series of two articles on President Clarence S. Campbell of the National Hockey League. Look for the second and final installment in next week’s of THE HOCKEY NEWS.) MONTREAL. Que— When Clarence S. Campbell got the word in September, 1946 that he had been named president of the National Hockey League, the story is that his first unofficial quote of acknowledgement was: “Well, I’ll be damned.” Today, approaching the finish of his 16th season, he continues to be damned, sometimes with faint praise, sometimes in real or simulated anger by fan, player, coach, manager and the press. Along the damning route the 56-year-old Fleming, Saskatchewan product, as the third president in the long, colorful, and frequently stormy history of one of the world’s most successful professional sport empires, has…

‘Chief’ Fears Day He’ll Pack Gear In Attic To Stay
(In the Toronto Star) TORONTO, Ont.— On television, the Indians never win a heat. That merely proves how the horse operas mislead people. In the battles of the goals and the gallons, George Armstrong has a teepee full of trophies and a bean-pot full of wampum. Of course, he’s part-Scot, although he’s known as The Chief, as a tribute to his Indian ancestors. If you wanted to plunder an old classic that first was applied to baseball’s Rudy York, you could say The Chief also is part-centre but mostly right winger. Around Hamilton’s Plantation Motor hotel, The Chief is a bigger name than Cochise and Crazy Horse. That could be because he owns the inn. lock, stock and beer barrel. This season, The Chief has been getting the goals and the Plantation has…
Two Penalty Shots Set A New Record
HERSHEY, PA.— Hockey history was made here March 31 when two penalty shots were awarded during an American League game that saw the Hershey Bears trounce the Rochester Americans, 12-0, in a season finale match. No veteran observer of the ice game could ever recall two free shots being assessed in a single professional contest in the long annals of the sport. What’s more the players awarded the shots were beaten to the punch by two spunky goal tenders. Referee Ted Yarton was the man who called the one for Ripley decisions. The first penalty shot was awarded to Bears’ rookie Cleeland Mortson at 12.14 of the second period with Hershey holding a 4-0 lead. Mortson had shaken loose for a walk in on goalie Jerry Cheebers, but defenseman Mike Donaldson upended the Bears forward and…
