Punch Scoffs At Milt’s Beefs On Sponsorship
TORONTO, Ont.—Maple Leaf manager-coach Punch Imlach and chief scout Bob Davidson have both scoffed at a statement made by Milt Schmidt, assistant general manager of Boston Bruins. Addressing a service club in Kingston, Schmidt blasted the rule barring sponsorship of hockey clubs within 50 miles of Toronto or Montreal. He said that it stacked the cards against the U.S. clubs in the National Hockey League, pieventing their building up good farm teams. “I don’t know what he is complaining about,” Imlach commented. “At one time, Boston had more sponsored clubs in our 50mile radius than we did. They had a junior ‘B’ team in Lakeshore and a ‘C’ team in Newmarket. There is nothing to stop them from scouting players in our radius. We sponsor fewer teams than any other club in…
