FORT WILLIAM, Ont.— The annual awards for the Lakehead junior league were selected by the sportswriters and broadcas ters this past weekend. Gary Veneruzzo, the flashy centre iceman of the Fort William Canadiens walked off with two honors. He won the Frank Sargent Trophy for the league scoring title and the Russell Trophy as the league’s most valuable player. The Walter Risi Memorial Trophy which is presented to the top goaltender was won by Gord Murray of the Canadiens. Port Arthur North Stars Captain Ricky Yeo, who has yet to sit out any time for a penalty since his midget playing days was chosen as the league’s most gentlemanly player for the second year in a row, and he will be awarded the George Budd Trophy. IF Barons Miss Flag It Won’t Be By Much

Nets Big Ones CLEVELAND, O.— In the December 2 issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS, a story under a Cleveland dateline started: “If, as it’s said, the mark of a good hockey team is its ability to win on the road, the Cleveland Barons are going to wind up the 1961-62 season as one of the king-pins of the American Hockey League.” The same story ended with these words: “All of which means that the Cleveland skaters are going to cut a swath through the AHL—if they can maintain anything approaching their fine early-season record on the road.” The season now is boiling into its final full week and it would appear, at this writing, that the Barons have an excellent chance of grabbing off the Western Division leadership. EDMONTON, Alta.— While talking around the National League recently with the parent Detroit Red Wings, we took advantage of the opportunity to check out their report that Bill Gadsby will be the next coach of the Edmonton Flyers. Apparently, Bud Poile may be hankering to once again turn to an exclusive role of manager, instead of doubling up as the coach as well. Ever since Gadsby joined the Red Wings, it was rumored that he had a bright future in the Detroit scheme of things. Else why would they bring him into the organization at that particular stage of his career? Gadsby had nursed hopes for years of coming in with the Wings.
