PROVIDENCE. R. I.— Thanks to the pinpoint sharpshooting of rookie Pierre Briliant, the Rhode Island Reds are making a strong stretch bid for third place in the AHL’s Eastern Division, and a post-season playoff spot. Brillant, 29-year-old rookie sensation of the Reds has, at this writing, fired 30 goals for the campaign, and is pacing the Providence team in its late drive towards the playoffs. A few days back, just when it looked as if the Reds were doomed for last place in the East, Mr. Brillant took charge of the dangerous situation. Sweeney Making Assault On Club And Loon Marks
SPRINGFIELD. Mass.— Smoothie Bill Sweeney of the Springfield Indians is continuing his assault on club and American Hockey League records. When the clever center scored his 30th goal recently, he broke a Tribe standard and tied an AHL mark. He became the first Indian in history ever to score 30 or more goals for three consecutive seasons and at the same time tied the league record of having scored 30 or more goals for five consecutive campaigns. The AHL mark was held by Murdo Mackay of the Buffalo Bisons. But Sweeney’s feat is much more remarkable than even Macway’s because the Indian scoring ace did it in his first five season’s while Mackay didn’t start his string until his third year of competition.
